Sexual, apparently. But otherwise non existent save for their appearance in that Critical Failures short story.

Best used as another kind of Goblin. Goblins have a great variety of them, from xvarts to snyads and more. Condense and connect the egregious amount of small people monsters.

Honestly, between hobgoblins and orcs goblins already have their niche filled. "Kobold" doesn't even seem to refer to a specific race but any culture of short, sneaky people who like to steal things and are generally hostile to civilized peoples, be they rat-men, dragon-men, dog men, rabbit-men, or some purple fey goblinoid creature. Better than dragonborn. When the race that can claim draconic heritage is the measly kobold, it provides great contrast and a path to greatness for individuals. Also meshes quite better with lizardfolk who don't care or relate themselves with dragons.
Better than goblins. There's room for both, theoretically, but even when both exist kobolds are better. Goblins are mischievous fools that care only for themselves and are forced into being footsoldiers and shocktroops of bugbears or hobgoblins. Kobolds are dedicated to their packs, inventive, and can have great deigns on power, and thus are far more versatile as NPCs or PCs.
Better than gnomes. Discounting 4e, but that good writing has been thoroughly retconned. Regardless of getting into the whole "gnomes/kobolds/goblins/dwarves/elves/brownies...are the same thing!" bollocks, gnomes generally have a shit-all place stuck between halflings, elves, dwarves, and humans. They have no purpose, and nobody plays them except to get +2 int or be a memer. Kobolds add a more alien alternative to halflings as "the other small race", can take on the dangerous/volatile inventor role (even as tribals they make shit like skunk-cannons or bee bombs) while elves keep the fey prissy shit and dwarves get the gemcrafting and more established metallurgy/technology.

This is why my setting has no dragonborn, goblins, or gnomes.

I use all humanoid tier enemies as "cannon fodder," but cannon fodder for mid level heroes rather than low level heroes; most evil humanoids that have the nerve to attack people IMC are spellcasters, and they don't care about how they get it.

So kobold scale sorcerers are the most common kind of kobold, and CR 1, and orcs and hobgoblin are usually CR 2-4.

To Kobolds, sex comes as duty and necessity, less of a fancy, and sometimes no romance involved.

Most fun character I ever played was a Kobold.

Ironically though, I don't even use them as a Dragon's "obligatory favored minion" and instead use Goblins as the preferred minion.. Kobolds hate gnomes. As gnomes are an ethnicity of dwarves in my world, that means they hate dwarves. Because they still exist, that means they're kinda badass.

Kobolds are kind of awesome at trapmaking. That means they're natural engineers. And because I tend to get all Grimtooth with my traps, it means they have a reputation for being spectacularly creative and sadistic.

Based on this, I've stretched out their culture a little. They're as good at dwarves at metalsmithing (competition for metal is why they became rivals in the first place) but never bothered to learn to craft the really rare shit - adamantine remains well outside of their capabilities. Conversely, they can do amazing stuff with what dwarves consider to be 'trash metals' - clockwork et al out of tin and copper. They also hate the drow and damn near everything in the underdark, which has made them distant allies to several of the surface races - including elves and humans.

I've played kobolds relatively frequently.
Our settings are usually egalitarian enough that nobody gives a fuck, although they're still often considered unusual. We have occasionally gone into less egalitarian provinces, where the kobold has to stay near the rest of the party, which is interesting from a roleplaying perspective.

They still have stat penalties, so the trick is to play things geared for DEX or spellcasters. They are not tanky and they will never be tanky. But everyone loves a tiny cleric who provides buffs and heals.

I mostly just love to play cute shit, and kobolds are cute. I don't mind having to jump through a couple hoops to do it. I'd probably play that corgi race from 4E given half a chance.

Best when they are not just another shitty rehash of short human people from folklore. The amount of shitty autists that think everything should be strictly just like folklore and mythology, instead of being inspired by it, is too damn high on this board.

I vastly prefer the original scaled lizard-like kobolds of D&D, and their transformation into a much better niche of tiny lizard people with draconic ancestry who like serving dragons. It helps if you base their appearance loosely on Araripesuchus, the Dog Croc.

For my setting I have them as members of the draconic empire that spans across the notMiddleEast. They form the menial task laborers, tinkers, and engineers of various clockwork tech due to their small delicate hands compared to the dragonborn or the dragons. They have enclaves and minor groups that will burrow into just about anywhere there's metals or gems to dig up, so you can find them scattered across the world, even the cold regions since they are warmblooded.

When playing them I like to make them as a bit off, since kobolds who tend to go adventuring are usually the not quite right in the head types. Kraknak, Kobold Extraordianire was the best one i've played, and traveled around as part of a small troupe of entertainers, performing magical feats for the townspeople.

Also, kobolds are actually one of the more extensively described folklore creatures. They're spirits that appear as some manner of diminutive human, as candles, or sometimes just invisible, and are weirdly spirit bound to houses and mines, the latter of which known for all kinds of fatal accidents. I assume that's where warcraft got their miner kobolds, and where the overall kobold concept got the underground trapmaking angle. They've also got an elemental spin, some being associated with fire, water, and metal. Cobalt is said to be where they got their name from to begin with.

In my setting kobolds used to be dragonmen in the time of reptiles but the snakegod cursed them for not worshipping him enough by crossing them with the most pathetic thing he could think of, an early mammal. That's why they're rat-lizard-men and so small and shitty. They hate all other small people because they can fit instead their tunnels, especially goblins because goblins love pickling kobold eggs, and they get a ton of amusement from beating up on a race even weedier than they are.

Same as with any other fantasy race. People playing them have the creative ability of a paper bag and need the crutch of "I'M A <defining characteristic of fantasy race> SO I DO <defining characteristic of fantasy race> THINGS" to actually play something of any interest, it's as lazy as playing overwrought sexuality/race/national stereotypes it adds nothing but a checklist of how this character acts for the player to look at and randomly pick without care. Working on a homebrew game, I went to make a Kobold race and decided to look up their origins for more ideas on racial traits besides the standard small, reptilian, and good with traps. Apparently the reptilian kobold was entirely fabricated by D&D. The original kobolds were a diverse type of fairy, which lived in caves, boats or houses. One of the earliest D&D kobolds was only vaguely reptilian, based off of the mine-kobolds, and featured a dog-like snout. This was adopted by Japan for some reason, which is why kobolds in japanese games and shows are dog-eared people.

I've always actually loved gnomes. I particularly love how Pathfinder describes them. It's something about the innate and insane curiosity and dedication to specific things that made me enjoy them. What defines them is their obsesaiveness.

Absolutely true. My point is that one should never counter "I like kobolds" with "gnomes and dragonborn are better." They're only marginally better, if at all, and a gnome is guaranteed to actively attempt to ruin every serious moment while a dragonborn is a guaranteed snowflake. These - and kobolds - can be PLAYED well, but outside of specific types of campaigns, as races they inherently sabotage the feel of it.

I'll be sincere and tell you that I'm starting to get sick of them.
At first it was nice: have once in a while a character that was the underdog, made things more interesting.
Then came the large numbers of kobolds brought up. Which was still acceptable.
Then, with the large numbers, also came up a whole bunch of them that were special snowflakes in their own way, from "I'm tiny but actually I have the power of a giant" to "My way to worship dragons is to mind control them and make them my slaves" bullshit.
Then, even among a more general sight, there was more and more sexualization of those buggers (not that they weren't sexualized before too, but the thing went overboard).
Of course I'm talking by my own personal opinion and I understand that some people like the little buggers, but at this point I can't get in any fucking campaign without seeing yet another fucking kobold character. (and without fail, either they end in some romantic subplot or outright trying to go to bed with whichever party member is at hand)

It's been tiring both as DM and player.

Oh, right, so, I don't allow polymorph/magical changeshape (no matter how powerful the user) to be able to do these three things:
-It can't make/remove clothing or equipment. (There is a separate "conjure clothing" spell though.)
-It can't change your weight.
-It can't change your size.

Dragons turn into giant humanoids in the first place because in their "standard" animal form it can be extremely impractical to do a lot of the fancy things: wearing clothing, jewelry, having cool armor and weapons, sitting on thrones, talking, looking good, or eating fancy dinners sitting at a fancy table with fancy cutlery and dishes.
Though, it's kind of a Gijinka situation: claws, horns, tails, even tiny wings can still be left over... And if you're a dragon with multiple heads you'll be a humanoid with multiple heads unfortunately.

So,
Dragons steal/hire/breed/borrow hordes of goblins and kobolds so they can order them around like pikmin/age of mythology/warcraft style to build them all the things they so desire and in turn teach their minions the vast knowledge they usually accrue(so they can do their jobs better): metalsmithing, agriculture, enchanting, engineering, alchemy, etc..

Dragons at one point even had kingdoms! With big fancy thrones, big fancy countries and even bigger, fancier, palaces! But that was a long time ago unfortunately.
Ask any Dragon and they'll pretend they prefer having goblins and kobolds, but REALLY they'd love to have the more independent/successful races worshiping them again: Humans/Centaurs, Orcs, or Dwarves.
