So, every campaign i have run so far i've tried to keep a theme to the music. Daft punk and glitch mob for cyberpunk, Stephen Schackinger, The Heavy and others like it for for a western urban noir etc etc.
The problem i run into is that this time the players asked for epic fantasy. The maps have been drawn, the plot has been crafted, the NPC's have had their backstories fluffed, and now, i realize i haven't thought about music! The problem, however is that all of the epic fantasy-ish music i can find sound so generic. It's all gregorian chanting, overpowering cymbals and trombones. I considered symphonic metal, but i have no clue where to start with that.

So, long story short: What genre of music could work for an epic fantasy game?

And also, general music thread!
>>
I just use a bunch of this stuff, it's pretty quality for setting tone without overpowering your or your players' voices.

pretty much the entire drakengard/nier soundtrack. common sense, really.

nier automata especially has isolated/subdued variants to every area BGM so you can take unobtrusive stuff, then blast the full-vocals experience when wild shit happens.

Sounds good. I will use a couple of these.
As a GM i have a history of using more iconic or identifiable pieces as supplement or counbterpoint to an intro, outro or to accentuate a particular scene. (Nothing beats finding the perfect piece of orchestral hans zimmer and tailoring the paladin generals epic speech -around- the dynamics of the music)

Got suggestions for anything that'll stand out, or any artists that make short and sweet and memorable pieces?

Awesome, love the first one.

I never thought to look towards games for music. I dont play a lot of vidya these days. But in hindsight its obvious. Thanks a bunch, gotta mine morrowind, WoW and other iconic high budget games for soundtracks.

(Though, one of the players used to play WoW, wont he just insta-associate every scene with WoW music with the game? I dont want that. I know i cant help but link music to past memories.)

yeah, taht's why video games are tough.

good news is, fucking NOBODY played drakengard or nier until automata came out.

I love listening to this songs while i write my cyberpunk novel or adventures for my 2020 group. maybe somebody of you likes some songs from this because these songs ar my personal opinion what kind of music fits into a cyberpunk setting and i know many people disagree. These songs arn't BGMs because they have lyrics. they are inspirational for me.

I use FFXIV music a lot, and some random FF remixes I've found over the years. Nier and Drakengard have great soundtracks. I'm also rather fond of The Witcher 3 and Neverwinter Nights. Torment: Tides of Numenara had a pretty decent soundtrack for games too.

If you don't mind something a bit more modern, I also enjoy using some jazz for taverns.

https://youtu.be/wPWbRGNUAMA
^For example.

I tend to stick to video game/movie soundtracks. I may associate some music to what they came from, but honestly as long as I keep it low and just there for atmosphere then I'm more focused on the game in front of me. However, everyone is different so your mileage may vary I suppose.

Use Perturbator for cyberpunk, you filthy casual.

Nox Arcana is pretty good for atmosphere once you filter the songs with (cheesy) vocals. Each one of their album has a theme if you're looking for a more specific ambiance. Most of it is oriented toward dark ambient and gothic imagery but you also have stuff like Phantom of the High Seas, Grimm Tales, Blood of the Dragon or Winter's Eve.

>I never thought to look towards games for music.

They are my primary source.

I mean, RPGs are obvious, but Character Action and Fighting games can cover just about any character fueled music you could want.

Who wouldn't put on Spinal's theme in the skeleton cave?

>Iron Maiden - Brave new World
There are elements of greatness in this, but the whole of the thing is sadly inferior to their classic stuff.

Speaking of Maiden, here's some thematically-appropriate stuff for a fantasy campaign:

Sun and Steel - https://youtu.be/2ZPWbkR2BbE
Flash of the Blade - https://youtu.be/ur8l3qDVr84
The Duellists - https://youtu.be/ty66q5RAL3E
Invaders - https://youtu.be/BLqsCPbrCM8
Powerslave - https://youtu.be/TzrfJsIQNrg
Alexander the Great - https://youtu.be/1oTEQf1d9Iw

And some stuff that could work fine, even if it doesn't necessary have a specific fantasy campaign theme:

Sea of Madness - https://youtu.be/RGPizVJlOsg
Ides of March / Wrathchild - https://youtu.be/OaTPAmP6Ak0
Losfer Words - https://youtu.be/9sf4HeZtlnI
Prodigal Son - https://youtu.be/GxWsDJjsFKI
Strange World - https://youtu.be/loNv0yB5Bqs

Or, if you'd rather have instrumental stuff:
