5+ GWs under my belt now, every single one has toed the party line at 75% of the model has to be GW shit or homemade. No FLGS has ever given a shit.

GW doesn't want other sellers getting free advertisement at their stores. If you wanna proxy a bunch of shit, play at the LGS, or at home.

literally all I do as a guard player.

Honestly if you play IG and don't convert those poor Cadians and Catachans you seriously have something wrong with you. IG is made for conversions and having a regiment that is distinctly you.

Also helps that I never have to play at a GW, so I go nuts and use all kinds of 3rd party stuff

>>
>>52446084
Kinda off topic but does GW have an officail policy to kitbashes? Whats it like being a redshirt under the new CEO, better?
>>
>>52446513
>Whats it like being a redshirt under the new CEO, better?
Much, Kirby was a tool and he had no business being in retail. Every single bad decision GW ever made was as a result of his leadership, since he had the perspective of an early 90s finance guy and never actually saw the inside of a hobby center, delegating that sort of thing to middle managers whose advice he would ignore.

>Kinda off topic but does GW have an officail policy to kitbashes?
70% GW product any time the question comes up but by and large it's left to the individual discretion of the redshirt making the call. I've personally allowed complete scratch sculpts as long as they clearly represent what they're supposed to be while banning others that don't. The kid with the Aku Tyranids used to game in my shop and I wouldn't let him put his Sculpy mess on my tables unless there was an identifiable GW model underneath it - which is how you wound up with pic related.

As a rule of thumb, you shouldn't have any trouble as long as it's based on a GW model. Don't be the guy that tries to field a Tamiya Tiger II with some IG bits glued on. If a redshirt gives you a hard time for your Kasrkin with Anvil combi-weapons or Kromlech heads, or your box-standard Space Marine tactical staff with Shapeways shoulder pads, he's an ass.
>>
>>52447249
I should probably add, there are a lot of asshole redshirts out there that take themselves way too seriously and been anything you didn't actually buy from them. I've personally known Hobby Specialists who forbid Forge World in their stores because they don't sell it, so your mileage with this advice may vary.

That being said, don't start none, won't be none are words to live by - just about anything will fly under the radar as long as you're not advertising it.
>>
>>52447249
Wait Aku nid was from you? Neat, not the first time I've seen that model. And I'll keep that in mind thanks redshirt guy

>>52443183
Best advice I can give is read a lot of history, then look at everything out there online that sells human sized bits. Not just for 40k.

I personally use tons of WWII bits as I play Bolt action. Many of the pouches, backpacks, shotguns, and hats (Anything German is perfect, the Eagle the Germans wear is identical to Imperials at tabletop)

Good websites to start with for bits would be Victoria Lamb, Mad Robot, Kromlec, Max Mini, Warlord Games, and Forgeworld. Pig Iron stuff is great too if you can find it. From there you will go further and further down the rabbit hole.

As for general advice, go to Walmart and buy a ton of Plano storage cases. They're like 4 bucks a pop and clear. Hoard bits like a madman and keep them categorized. Then, dip into your supply for inspiration. Hit up all your buddies, especially people who you know play historicals, and ask them if they have parts laying around. Other IG players are a good mine as well. Many have similar obsessions and will have picked up odd lots of bits that they won't use in a bulk purchase. They will usually trade these for a song to a like-minded brother in arms. Hell I gave a new player a sandwich bag stuffed with bits because he wanted to make veteran Cadians and I had Cadian bits out the wazoo that I wasn't going to use.

>>52445634
I have 40 of them and a "commissar" that's one of their spooky intelligence guys, along with like 8 chicken walkers, a couple ape suits, and more mobile infantry than I can count. I picked it up over time from friendly grogs because I love starship troopers. I also have a ton of bugs that are in the makeline as well.

As for why they're not painted like the movies, movie scheme doesn't really stand out much at tabletop, so I lightened the colors and mixed a few things up to make them pop.

>I need Stahlhelm heads. What manufacturer would /tg/ recommend?

Warlord Games has this thing called a "modular head system"

>>
>>52445514
Best tip to highlight black is not to use white as a highlight. Ivory colours are my go to for it, using a space wolfy blue grey can also look pretty good.

Unless you're dealing with razor sharp edges on armour plates and such you will always need at least 2 levels of highlighting. I'll usually paint on a wider rough line then apply a fine hilight line on the very edge using the side of the brush where possible, then go back to black to tidy up the highlight line. For belts and straps I paint the whole strap the first highlight colour, apply the brighter edge highlight, then run a line of black down the middle. Much easier and much quicker.

Yup, latter Anon is correct. Fire Warrior upper legs and some filler, lower legs, combined with essentially no filler. I suspect both kits are sculpted from a standard set of armatures as several poses are identical in both kits.
>>
>>52441922
>That's a shame. I was under the impression you could kitbash freely as long as the model in question was still mostly GW parts
thats the company policy yeah.
Of course some stores will have an overly draconian manager. Though in my experience at least 2 3rds GW (or completely scratch built) is accepted by any of the 5 GW stores I've actually been to.
>>
>>52460373
If you can think of somewhere else that has full-size, fully furnished 6x4 tables available for free play, I'm happy to hear it. I live in a major metropolitan area and of the half dozen or so hobby shops that are currently or have previously been open in my area, only one of them provided table space, no terrain, which you had to rent. The table, not the terrain. I want to say it was fifteen bucks for an hour but I honestly never gamed there and they've been closed for a few years, now, since their business model sucked.

One provided space only for there own events two nights a week.

And two others had card tables, which you were free to use only if you could snag them before the Magic players did, and then you were pretty much limited to playing Kill Teams. Again, you had to provide your own terrain.

The rest are primarily comic shops and don't regularly provide space to game.

With GW, you take the good with the bad; yes, some of their employees are tools but there's nowhere else to reliably find a pickup game or play on a properly dressed table, unless you want to buy your own terrain and play at home - and I don't know about you, maybe you have your own game room, but I pretty much have to make due with my dining room table and I'd rather keep that clear to dine on, myself.
>>

Why has /tg/ become -so- retarded recently?

Trumpkins shitting in most threads as if their delusional opinions are insightful, interesting, amusing or (most importantly) remotely fucking relevant to /tg/

Then we have chumps like this who seem to be unable to understand how -reality- even works. "Sure I'll move hundreds or thousands of miles across the country and sack my job off so I can push plastic space figures on a table without a fee".

This situation is the norm in the UK, particularly down south. The FLGS model just isn't viable with shop rents in this half of the country. I get the impression things are better across the pond, but even there there's going to be gaps in coverage.
>>
>>52463053
It does not necessarily fit the free-to-play category, but there is such thing as gaming clubs. Non-GW games players usually hang in those, because stores have limited space and there's multiple games they want to play. So if Flames of War has an event, Infinity players need to find somewhere else to play.
Try getting in touch with the wider gaming community. Just endure remarks about playing shitty GW games.

This. Land of the free has a billion acres to build sprawling warehouses on. PISSLAND is short of space, and stores with gaming tables are vanishingly rare. Unless they're GW stores, which are ubiquitous.

This is a great solution for non-GW games but if your primary game is 40k or AoS, what's the point? Clubs are notoriously cliquish and if you aren't playing what they play, you're either not welcome at all or, by your own admission, you're at the bottom of the social order.

There are also other considerations when looking at gaming clubs, not least of which is where do you play? If it's just some guy's house, you're basically just paying for his terrain, which you get to use when he hosts a game night at his own convenience. At least with a hobby shop, GW or otherwise, you can go over whenever during operating hours.

Close, but it's nothing to do with shortage of space, British towns vary between 10-40% empty retail properties. Landlords seem prepared to keep them empty rather than lower the rent to get the filled up. Most UK town centers have 1 street of universally big chain stores with the only difference between towns being the order of shops in the line. There's usually a smaller street or streets where independents have been pushed to and these are slowly changing into parades of empty units, hairdressers, charity shops, takeaways and bookmakers. Pretty much no other business model is viable.

Depends on the club really. In one in Warsaw that has a lot of space I went to play an Infinity game and at the same time people there were playing AoS, Warmahordes and X-Wing.

I wonder how much profit most GW stores actually make. I know they're virtually all one person operations now, which probably helps a little, but given the discounts you can get online I wonder how much money they actually bring in.
>>

>1 big street
Can confirm. I was in Leamington, admittedly a rich city full of rich people but holy shit that was weird. Just one big ass street going through the city, with smaller streets going off it.
If you weren't on either the Parade or streets linked to it, you might as well be living in the countryside.

They're actually expanding again, my shop has one full-time and two part-time employees, now; down, significantly, from the four full-time employees it had before 2008, but up from where it was a year or two ago. It actually didn't even go one-man until, I think, 2013 when the lease expired and they relocated to a smaller space in a dodgier strip mall two blocks over; the company used it as an excuse to downsize the remaining staff and the manager has to reapply for his own job.

Because of how vertically integrated the company is, the math on how profitable a store is, is very straightforward; you're either making money or you're not.

But there's a lot of overhead tied up in GW's brick-and-mortar business, at least in North America, so they tend to take a pretty hard line on individual shop performance. If you miss your sales goal for a month, you get a reprimand and they post your job as a vacancy; miss it again and they replace you.

That may have changed under Rountree's leadership but I can't say for sure, since my shop has been doing gangbusters recently.

I want to play at GW shop, but I feel like I'm obligated to purchase shit if I go there. I'm a cheap ass though, thoughts? I wish they would sell snacks or some shit. Makes me feel a lot better and everyone gets something.
>>
>>52464114
>Actually expanding again.

Indeed. They are even opening stores in Asia, something unheard of before that.
>>
>>52464155
Depends on the manager. If you're in an area where it doesn't make much money, he'll probably try to sell some more stuff, even more so if you're a newcomer, since newcomers are the ones that buy.

Unless you're socially akward, there shouldn't be any problems. Litteraly just say you're looking around.
As to snacks, why not save on that for a month, and buy yourself a box with the money you didn't use on snacks? Better for both you and the store.

Well I did spend 10 years with a pretty standard UK store 10years ago so here's some (somewhat out of date) facts.

Rent on the store was £27000 PA (I know they're charging in excess of 35K for those units now)

Business rates are based on payable rent (usually) so that was another 27,000 per year.

Staff costs were about 40K a year (appropriately enough). That's probably halved now they're all 1 man stores.

Turnover was about 10K per month with some heavy fluctuation some months 6K Christmas would deliver in excess of 20K.

So with the high margins the stores were turning over some profit in those days. perhaps less than some might expect though.

I know some major shopping center stores were paying 6 figure sums in rent and they didn't seem to be turning over many multiples of what we in our little provincial town were doing. So some stores in prominent locations were run at a loss for promotional reasons.

This bullshit was the reason I left, it was tearing the company apart as they were hemorrhaging skilled staff with decades of experience in some cases and replacing them with ex-McDonalds managers (yes really) with no knowledge of the hobby whatsoever. Then they fired all the non management staff en masse in 2 waves, leaving most stores with one inexperienced manager with no hobby knowledge, trained to only -manage- other staff members and not to engage with customers as the soul remaining staffer. All the while they were turning out shit content that was borderline unsellable.

Tom Kirby doesn't get anything -like- the opprobrium he deserves for fucking up GW. The man was a corpulent subhuman moron.

Concur. I still have a copy of Tom Kirby's Little Red Book that I like to bring out when I need to demonstrate what an out-of-touch goon he was.

Post is about the unarguable retardation of modern /tg/ that -is- a contributing factor to the problem. The statement is correct.

It is also less than 20% of the post, but you still feel the need to focus on that specific bit of it. The statement is factually correct I don't care if it hurts immigrant /pol/'s feewings.

Don't pretend the post isn't a trollpost meant to be needlessly inflammatory itself.

Basically, it's clear you don't have a problem with out-of-place political bullshit on this board, only when it's not your political bullshit.

It was meant primarily to answer the dumb fucking cunt who suggested someone should move house to get a gaming table. Was that you and this is your fucking retarded defense?

I stick entirely to my guns that this forum is increasingly full of pigshit thick cunts (which genuinely wasn't always the case, at least on this board), and I make no apology for correctly pointing the finger at immigrant /pol/ scum who have been deliberately shitting in every board they can. I will keep pointing this out every time I please and wherever I please until /pol/ returns to it's containment board.

I fully expect this will not occur, though as their new Wotsit king loses his lustre they may retreat at least a little. Somebody has to fight back though.

Your screaming about it will have as much effect as my pointing it out. None.

I'll point out further that I've contributed At least a dozen quality content rich posts in this thread alone, while you as the filthy cunt you are have contributed nothing whatsoever. Not least because you're not actually a gamer at all and are only here because you're /pol/'s designated board shitter on duty this hour.

Not even the fag you're arguing with, but this is an anonymous image board; you're anonymous, you don't get credit for contributing anything. You want recognition, put on a tripcode and we'll shit on you for being a pretentious twat who thinks he deserves recognition.
