For your treasure room, obviously. My Wizard has a war-room featuring all of the 5 different ways he's used the Imprisonment spell in the form of the material components, which can still be broken to release what's inside. All of them are set to when this Universe dies, so they're all basically there until it's no longer a problem.

The only one he doesn't have in the war room is a Noble who was the head of a human trafficking ring. He used chains to bind him to the earth he was standing on, which just so happened to be at the bottom of the mine his family owned, which has since been collapsed. His pedestal in the war room just has his signet on it.

It's bullshit because most people get a stat to 18 at 4.
>>
>>52433385
No, you're expected to get your main attribute as high as you can as soon as you can, since every +1 to hit and damage is precious. I'd expect most of the time people get 17 in a stat at first level.

>>52433013

Looks like roll20 is BLATANTLY superior.
>>
>>52433463
What do you mean how does that work?

Grab the standard array, put the 15 on your primary stat (STR/DEX for martials, INT/WIS/CHA for casters), +1 or +2 from race bonuses, you start the game with 16 or 17 and 4th level ASI you're either going to take a Feat or round it up to the nearest even number, 18.
>>
>>52433463
Start at 16.
Put both levelup points at 4th into int.
>>
>>52433463
Point buy for 16, or get 15 from default array and use a +2 race (or a +2 ASI at level 4)
>>
Just wanna vent for a second. My dm prefers doling out xp instead of using the clearly superior milestone option. REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>>
Are the players expected to return Wave, Whelm and Blackrazor to their previous owners at the conclusion of White Plume Mountain?

Because no player would ever give up that kind of power. Blackrazor in particular is way too good - +3, advantage to EVERYTHING, huge temp HP etc etc

Isn't it too powerful for one character to have?
>>
When playing as a blade pact warlock, is there any reason not to choose the strongest weapons (1d12) in most situations?
>>
>>52433565
Poor guy. So does mine. I don't mind so much though, because the rest of the party are newfriends, so this gives them time to learn their abilities.
>>
>>52433567
That's what the Tomb of Horrors is for anon.
>>
>>52433567
1. It doesn't do much to help you til after you kill something.
2. The nature of Blackrazor is to encourage you to obliterate a mook first thing.
3. The utility of a martial is in taking down the big boys first.
>>
>>52433567
Would you not then become the next BBEG? You think you can do better?
>>
>>52433565
Mine die a custom hybrid method where at certain points (milestones) he'd dole out XP accounting for party accomplishments and individual characters adhering to their personal goals and backgrounds.

He dropped it after 5 sessions, thankfully. Besides his retarded short questionnaire, giving out uneven XP is bullshit.
>>
>>52433572
I think you mean 2d6 weapons.

Yes, there are plenty of reasons, most of which revolve around reducing how MAD the character is. You could also take one handed weapons if you want a shield for more AC.
Reac weapons also benefit bladelocks, thanks to PAM.

races usually give +2 to something and +1 to something else, standard array 15+1 and 14+2 from race, boom, 16 and 16 at 1st level. at 4th level, just +2 to your primary stat, easy 18.
>>

>>52433572
you might want to use the UA smite weapons, or a finesse one so you don't need to pump str, on top of cha, dex and con; or use a one-handed weapon for hexblade, polearms for feats, etc.
>>
While we're on the subject of stats, my 3rd level paladin has 18str.

Finished build will have 20str, polearm master, tunnel fighter, and sentinel.

Should I take 20str at 4th level or pick up Sentinel? I already have tunnel fighter and polearm master.
>>
>>52433816
On the plus side, if you're a hasted crossbow master and with an ally with commander strike, you can add three extra quadruple damage hits.

>>
>>52433883
PAM will use up your reaction a lot. Sentinel uses your reaction a lot. It's less important to have both than it is to have 20 Str, since you'll be using your Str every turn but you won't use both feats as often.
>>
>>52433542
It's kind of weird, because I'm pretty sure there actually is rules automation in roll20.

Personally, I only use checks like that to determine how long a task takes. For example, beat DC 10 to move up 10 feet, DC 15 for 20 feet, and DC 20 for 30 feet. I would give advantage for the picks though.
>>
>>52433833
well. The science of flatulence says there are four main foods which stimulate the bacteria in the gut to produce gas: Fructose, Lactose, Raffinose and Sorbitol. So basically a combination of Fruit, Milk, Beans and (Artificial) Sugar. I'm sure you could make an extremely large fruit and cream desert of some kind and incorporate red bean paste. If he ate it it would make him very gassy. On the other hand, it's a red dragon, so he might be specifically a carnivore. In which case I would recommend cutting some slots in a cow carcass and filling it with beans, then sewing it back up and leaving it for the dragon.
>>
>>52433992
Nuclear Druid
>>
>>52434025
I missed the tunnel fighter bit. Who is insane enough to allow that?

I'd still say ASI over Sentinel though. Sentinel is not better than maxing out your main stat.
>>
>>52433958

Your options are:

1. Wizard feral winged tiefling or yuan ti purbelood
2. Moon druid (anything with wis, but probably hill giant)
3. Winged tiefling charisma anything, or half elf
4. Martial with variant human and sharpshooter, polearm mastery or great weapon fighting.
>>
>>52433992
You don't need to minmax in PF. Simply play a Wizard and you win it's that simple.

That's me, i'm the Warlock who is completely reviled in every city but I have to be the face of the party because everyone else can't think of ideas, lie, or talk in character in any meaningful capacity. I went Fiend Pact so I could blast shit but now I have to do the silver-tongue part as well. "Half-elves mature at the same rate humans
do and reach adulthood around the age of 20. They live much longer than humans, however, often exceeding 180 years. "

Besides it's D&D. I prefer quiet players who don't make a fuss, you can always just encourage them to roleplay more if not that's just what they're comfortable with.
>>

I am picturing the world's most coveted apple orchard now. It needs some reason to attract red dragons to accidentally eat these sugar-encrusted sea mammals that conveniently come nearby, and then also to attract black dragons who want to ferment the apples into wine/cider.

Honestly the way that 4e handles demihuman aging is something that I've kept in 5e.

Elves and Dorfs might live 100s of years but they mature at only a marginally slower rate than humans.

Goblinoids of course mature at slightly faster rates which helps them recover from the inevitable casualties inherent in being evil dickbags.

Draconic aging is still of course a shit show.
>>
>>52434270
Perhaps an ancient giant cidery would make a good set piece for this. There would be an excuse to have water elemental-powered running water through the facility. The ancient giants' magical secrets and treasure might initially attract the dragons who then get addicted to massive amounts of sugar and/or alcohol.

Not him but, I was going to say something about charm or fear resistance, but nothing ever explicitly calls it that way. magic resistance is the only time the book (as far as i could tell) gives you advantage on saving throws as "resistance" to something. which is kind of weird, it could be resistance to damage from magic sources but they evidently wanted it to help against crowd control or disables so i guess there's that.

in this case i guess advantage against doorways makes more sense than half damage from doorway damage...

you don't actually need instruments for a bard, most features tell you you can just give encouraging words and you don't need to actually play your instrument to cast magic, just use it as a focus (no performance checks required or anything).

my bard >>52434641 here used a component pouch until he found the magical mandolin, just then people realized he was a bard all along.

and for interesting, there's a million backgrounds i could come with but you have to see your character and think why would he go through all of the shenanigans of adventuring, or what does he wants to achieve at the end.

if your bard wants to find the best story of the land, living it himself if he needs to, i'm sure he will be interesting regardless of the setting.

My Wizard wants to craft trinkets (rings/earrings/etc.) for his group that can emit the "Message" cantrip. I'm looking at crafting magic items on the DMG and it only ever says about level-1 spells and up. Nothing about cantrips like Message. Do I just let it assume it's a level-1 spell and have the creation cost be 100gp and follow it from there?

I don't want to get real rules heavy here but at the same time, the wizard did say he's alright if he has to earn making something which is akin to a walkie-talkie. So I'm hoping to give some fun in that journey to get it.

A fiend promising power is good, since it gives a clear motive and lets you justify the cult leader being more powerful than the other cultists (since they might just be sharing a portion of their power with the others, like the Whalers and Brigmore Witches from Dishonored).
Also seconding this >>52434501 Kuo-Toas are great.
You could also utilise the Kraken Priest, Deep Scion and Sea Spawn from Volo's Guide for a similarly aquatic theme.
Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide establishes that undead can function as warlock patrons, so the cultists could be offering their sacrifices to a lich or something (the PCs don't necessarily have to confront the lich yet).
Could even be kobolds, half-dragons/dragonborn and so on kidnapping people to appease a dragon that's bossing them around.
Really, at the end of the day, there's no bad way to go about it, as long as you can come up with a decent motivation.
>>52434598
>Im thinking its an Imp trying to trick this guy into doing all this bad shit promising power in return.
That could be a pretty neat twist. The cult leader makes his final sacrifice in a dramatic showdown, flames roar up, an enormous shadow is cast across the wall of the sacrifice chamber and then... a tiny imp emerges.
>>
>>52434965

Well Scroll cantrips exist so I thought something like a trinket of message might be plausible. I'll probably say he can make it but the Message effect will only work on paired/group trinkets he makes so the assassin rogue won't be able to use it on anyone. Probably a x/Day effect too. Then I can give him an avenue to improve it but only improve its per day function to unlimited and possibly the range from say 120ft to 240ft then maybe 500ft with additional cost in upgrading them.

>>52435016

No, what I rather do is smaller but resource draining encounters in one day with a time sensitive goal. Once I did a large encounter that was multiple small ones that prolong the ordeal, and the players were never in any real danger but it did drain resources and then I set them up with a challenging encounter. It tested their creativity and survivability. If you want encounters that challenge make them waste resources before they get to the big fight. Lull them into a sense of victory.

I stole this from Mathew Coleville's series and all of his advice has worked out well for me so far.

So during a session, my players visited a museum and the cleric wanted to see artistic depiction of the deities of the world. I never thought of that so I just let it flow and quickly googled some artwork of the deities my campaign setting has. I showed him the following gods and goddesses paintings that adorned the walls. When I started showing pic related of Sune, he stops and is captured by her. For the next couple of sessions he can't stop thinking of her. In the gift shop he asked for Sune pendants, asked an artist in the capital city if he can sketch his interpretation of the goddess Sune and started praying to her more than his deity.

Now he just messaged me saying he's making it his ultimate character quest to bed her and he's hoping we can work something out.

I need a bit of advice.

I'm playing a homeruled-in Ratfolk from PF in my friend's 5e campaign. It's janky; they're basically small creatures who get the Halfling's "naturally stealthy," special rules for stacking with other Ratfolk, Darkvision, and an extra proficiency or two. But I wanted to get giant rat mount, like they use in their PF fluff. The problem is, in 5e, Giant Rats are technically the same size category, which I think means they're ineligible as mounts- page 198 of the PHB says the mount has to be one size class larger. To boot, it makes no sense from a mechanical viewpoint that they'd be viable as mounts; their strength score means their carry capacity would barely be able to carry a Ratfolk, let alone any sort of meaningful cargo.

So I wanted advice on how to statblock out a... I guess a "Giant Dire Rat"? How would you best go about sizing up a regular Giant Rat one size class so it would make sense as a mount for Small creatures?

You can already do a sort of archer barbarian by going dex barbarian, but eh.
Let's see.

>Deadly critical
What the heck is 'deadly critical'?

>+1dX to every single hit with a ranged attack
I'm hesitant to say this is fine, but I won't say it's entirely bad.
However, as it stands, you're making an archer barbarian do more damage at range than a greatsword barbarian with this (Before feats like GWM/sharpshooter).

You don't really need to say the movement ignores difficult terrain if you say 'you may THEN move'.

Maruader's swiftness is a bit odd in how it works, seeming to be a bit like flanking rules in that it's basically 'You get rewarded for moving around, even if the movement is entirely pointless' that serves to just complicate combat, but...
It does mean that you'd take an opportunity attack if you tried to use it.
Yet, then again, you already have reckless attack because you're a barbarian, so why should you care?

Overall I think it's acceptable, but the main issues:
>level 14 ability is overshadowed by reckless attack
>Feels a bit bland. While barbarians are pretty bland themselves, it feels mostly like the archetype is there to enable a playstyle rather than also build up some interesting abilities. It's basically 'You shoot arrows, and do more damage doing it' for the most part.
>The damage portion might be a bit much. You have +rage damage, +advantage from reckless attack, +1dX damage from the feature, + possible use of sharpshooter...
>>

>>52435920

>>
>>52435970
>>52435659
(Cont..)
But when I think about it, the damage portion probably isn't too much.

Why? Because you have to use a longbow/shortbow/sling.

A fighter with a hand crossbow gets one more attack than you at level 5, and two more attacks than you at level 11. They don't give a shit, they're going to use sharpshooter to shove +10 onto all those attacks if they want to, and they'll have the archery fighting style.

So, it's actually okay in terms of balance. I'd say that it's just about right in terms of power, though the later level features (especially level 14's) don't feel awfully useful.

Fighters can use bows instead of greatswords too and it's perfectly viable. They don't need a damage bonus to each hit. Simply that they can fight with dex at range with feats is enough.

But that's where the difference is. They can use crossbow expert, they have the archery fighting style (which is easily the most powerful) and they don't need strength to benefit from their features.
So it's justified.

And you're pretty much right on mounted combat, you don't want it to be a requirement. Knight, for example, made it easier to use horses, but didn't make the fact more powerful (You could mount a horse quickly, but you didn't get superpowers from being on a horse)

Maybe a feature that allows you to gain advantage instead of disadvantage against nearby prone targets (Within 15ft or so) which would also encourage moving around or 'ride by' sort of techniques. Or 'If a condition would grant you a bonus for making an attack within 5ft of a creature, you may take that bonus at 15ft instead' (paralysis, prone, etc) which wouldn't give you advantage but it'd give you not-disadvantage.

Though that's a bit of a specific ability.

Honestly, it'd be really nice to see some sort of battlemaster-for-barbarian sort of thing going on, but you'd have to be really careful with that. It'd just be nice to knock someone down with your strength and a heavy arrow or something.
>>
>>52434856

Then how does, say, a dictator or a war leader become general or leader of whatever when they themself can't take on more than one man with a spear?

At least in the DnD world, you need enough power to command respect and enough power to not instantly die to the first person who decides that they dislike you who thinks really hard and makes your head explode, but... You could get that from a magical item or really dedicated followers following you everywhere.

But I suppose the process of becoming a leader would give you levels somehow anyway even if you don't fight anything.

I told him i'll think about it. I've no issue with the class, i'm just worried about fitting it into the game properly instead of "Oops looks like your patron fired you, go find another. revised ranger is pretty strong from the get go and can do at least some utility, fighter is just attacking and attacking some more, valor bard with swift quiver and full spellcasting probably outcompetes them both in both damage and utility but stabilizes much later in your level progression.

multiclassing any of the above surely helps if you just want to shoot arrows and nothing else. valor bard, archfey bladelock and rogue all benefit from archery style, rogue could be a good single target ranged damage dealer with any source of extra attack or free advantage, etc.

and then you have crossbow expert but i'm not sure if that's what you want with archery.

Would a good DM allow a ranger to take urban environments as their favored terrain?

>>52438250
Oh, well, yes, I get it now. I thought you meant a 2 level dip of wizard. Actually, you get 1 more HP if you start warlock instead of wizard, so it's actually better to do it like that.

Depends on how you apply the damage from those. The creature is immune to nonmagical piercing, slashing and bludgeoning, but a special kind of bullet could deal additional fire, thunder, or maybe even force damage. The initial piercing would do nothing, the secondary damage would hurt. Same applies to tank shells. A huge rock I would flavor it as the rock breaking apart in half where it hit the monster, both pieces falling to each side as the creature keeps walking unscathed. That would make for a great scene, actually.
>>
>>52438310
Oh, well.
Overall, it sounds like one player is being retarded and everybody else is being punished for it. Sort of. Maybe.

But I've found, as a thing in general, if you overcomplicate things with 'Oh, the dragon is smart so they'll try to appear asleep while they're watching you' then the players won't be smart/pedantic/paranoid enough to check every little detail to make sure everything's just right. So I guess you have to drop hints, and if players still fuck up you can point them towards however many hints you gave.

But this is a bad example, because you don't need fucking hints to know a dragon will get pissed if you steal shit.
>>
>>52435131

Does that even exist?

Usually it's 'Resistance to bludgeoning/piecing/slashing non-magical weapons'
So, if it's immunity instead (which does exist, obviously)..
Wouldn't it be only physical damage, and only from weapon sources (Fall damage still applies)?

Siege weapons probably still count as weapons.

If it's a tank shell, it'll be immune even if it deals fire damage unless it's specifically bludgeoning/piercing/slashing only in which case any other stuff about the tank shell might affect it.

So my players just survived their first encounter with a gelatinous cube. In the process, we hit a rules issue and wanted to get 5eg's perspective.

When a GC enters a creature's space, it uses its engulf feature. Said feature allows a Dex save, and success allows the creature to move 5ft. In this instance, there was nowhere to move due to limited space. The only space available was an ally's space, outside the GC's reach. In our game, I ruled that the character could move into their ally's space, with the understanding that they'd be taking actions at Disadvantage while doing so.

How would you rule this?

Level 8 they can do 2d8+7 Psychic on an Intelligence Save with their mind. It's not bad.

They're not OP like some people scream, but they are very versatile. If you have the self decency not to step on other party members toes then they're fun.

Yes hit die are a class feature but not hit points. So you'd have the same number of d6s but add the con mod of the creature you possessed. As you don't get class features from the creature you don't get their hit die

I don't think I understand them, are their "talents" like cantrips and disciplines are spells?

Can I use the Mind Slam ability for that sick 1d10 at level 1?
>>
>>52439323
Yeah pretty much. Their Talents are all much better then cantrips though, in exchange for how few they get.

Think of Disciplines as taking a group of spells and using the spellpoint variant. 2 Psi Points equals a 1st level spell roughly. You basically have a more limited spellcasting choice, in exchange for even more versatility in how you use it.

Also yeah Mind Slam's really good.

Thanks for the clarification, that helps a lot.

There are rules for 'squeezing' where a character enters/occupies a space smaller than it can usually fit in.

I believe it simply gives disadvantage on attacks, advantage if someone tries to hit you and slower movespeed, but that's just off the top of my head.

Mystic player.
Depends on the Order, but Mind Slam for team play or Mind Thrust to just fuck shit up are your "cantrips" of choice. Focus on Psionic weapon gives you magic weapon too.

Critical Role is what I like, mostly because of Travis, Sam and Mercer. If you get into the first episodes are rough because they switched from 3.5 to 5 and Orian(Tiberius) is a hard core meta gamer and attention whore. He leaves after 30 or so episodes though.

>The shell explodes 5ft in front of the creature, igniting the incendiary powder within. It sends a wave of forceful concussion (bludgeoning damage) and fire. Only the latter seems to harm it.

Alternatively
>You shoot a tank shell at the Tarrasque. It explodes on contact and doesn't do shit to it.

If I got an item that changes my CON. Which obviously changes my max HP does it also heal you?

Example after already taken dmg

>40/65 HP

Get item boosting CON by 4 adding total 20hp to my max life does it become either

>60/85 or 40/85
>>
>>52439897
I would say your HP stays the same.
>>
>>52439897
i'd say it only increases your max hp.

A lot of such items require attunement, so it happens over the course of an hour in which case it likely doesn't matter much.

If it did, it'd probably depend on the item. If it's some sort of elixir of vitality, it'd give you HP. If it's some sort of 'wear this and you'll be healthy', you'd probably not get the HP, just max HP.

Why do people go to all the soul rending trouble of becoming a lich when they could just make a younger clone of themselves for 3000 gold, then transfer their soul to do it by jumping off a cliff
>>
>>52435817
It's not a constant however. It's a curveball that you can throw at the party to make them more mindful of their resources. I've only used it once and it was to just to let them know to be mindful that their ammo/spellslots abilities are a finite resource that HAVE to be used to your advantage. The other reason was that I wanted them to solve their problems a lot more creatively. I tend to make their battle encounters be a lot more dynamic and interactive so that they can use all of their class resources to their fullest, and if the rogue gets too abusive with sneaking there is always a wizard that is going to cast dancing lights on him or some traps in flanking spots.

It's all a balancing act. I like to play my games in a way where the Players either need to: Outsmart, Stronghand, or Overprepare their enemies, due to the enemies also wanting to win. However everyone has their own game so I would see how this would be a bad idea for some groups... then again I'm a first time DM with first time player so I'm not too sure about them knowing any better, but I always ask them if they had fun and they haven't said no up until now.

ah, but is it really you, or is that just what the clone WANTS you to think?
>>
>>52440201
Cause then there would be no drama and you might as well make a clone army at that point.

I have a wizard in my group with 12 Dex, 33 hp at 10. I wish he did stuff like this, but we used to have another wizard in our group who spent his time under greater invis on a broom, wore mage armor, scouted places out ahead of time with that or spells. It really annoyed the squishy wizard because he felt that a 10 minute scouting digression was too cheap and hard for the DM to plan around. So I think he got soured on effective wizarding survival. He ending up driving the other wizard away. I'm sorta sad.
