We talk about shit characters and how to make good ones.

>character's only motivation is money
>character is chaotic neutral
>character is a [insert meme animal here]-human hybrid
>character has a revenge backstory
>character is a lone wolf
>"rent isn't gonna pay itself"
>>
>>52417295
>Character is a 1.4 cm tall human
>Player insults you for being an American when you say that you don't think this is a normal human height.
>>
>First session
>"There is no reason my character would join the party"
Then why did you create such a character?
>>
>>52417295
>character has a revenge backstory
Nothing wrong with revenge backstories if they're done well. Sure, a character is probably gonna be shit if their story is: "[important person] was murdered and I am going to get vengeance on the killer, raaah". But you can make them cooler and more fun than that. I'm currently running a gunslinger who's out to get vengeance on a devil who tricked him. He has an obsession with knowledge and technology, and took a bad deal with a devil to learn the secrets of gunsmithing. He got screwed by the devil, and lost an arm and his afterlife. Now he's after the devil to settle things. Not an edgy character in the slightest, the way I play him. Just a man who loves books that made a really bad decision and has to pay for it.

>"rent isn't gonna pay itself"
This one can also be interesting if you expand on it. Just leaving it THAT way, it's shit. But if you make it into something a bit bigger, you can really run with it. A character who is a pawn in a bigger game can often be interesting if they resent the game they're stuck in, but have yet to find a way to break out. i.e. a man who goes off to war to protect what he loves, because nobody else will do it if he doesn't.
>>
>>52417295
>"Rent isn't gonna pay itself"

I found Garrett to be a nice character. Except nu-Garrett. Fuck that game.

He worked great as a single character the player themselves could latch on to, but actually having a drink with him would be awkward and expensive. Although maybe the character would be fun in a group I've never seen anyone understand what made Garrett great. The loner brooding thief character isn't instantly shit but it's hard to get right.
>>
>>52417295
>character's only motivation is money

>inherently evil class like a warlock

I play a lawful evil warlock. But what about the fey patron, wouldn't that be good?
>>
>>52417497
I found him interesting because he was business first, never got emotionally attached to jobs or most clients, but enjoyed himself while doing his job.

I think what players get wrong is the enjoyment factor being expressed through the character, and playing the "loner thief" less of a "angsty, no one understands me" character, and more of a "it's obviously better for me to do this by myself and not expect rookies to sneak about without having the equipment or experience" kinda thief. Course, that's my own opinion.

What makes a good motivation for a bog standard D&D game? Considering PCs in games like this have no real home, little to no stability in life, are risking death or worse 90+% of the time, and will likely be killing sapient beings on a daily basis, the only options you have as far as motivations are concerned seem to be a) fighting for a higher cause that justifies everything else or b) being an edgelord. Is there anything else? What could possibly drive a person to become a PC?

Think about the risk versus the reward. Even with all the negatives, you mention. There is also the chance of having unimaginable wealth, enough to make a stable home. There is also the chance of having adventurers forced into the lifestyle. Maybe there's an old debt they have to pay. My DM literally put a geas on over half the party to get us to go on a single adventure.

Well, let me complain about someone in my group.

>characters are always just a human fighter/ranger/bard (before I get shit, alone, this isn't necessarily a bad thing)
>hardly ever has a backstory, is mostly just defined by whatever class he's doing
>practically no personality
>hardly reacts to anything in the campaign outside of saying "oh", "wow", and "great"
>never takes initiative with anything

He just plays the most bland characters with no real drive or reason to be there. It's like he just follows the party along without really engaging with the campaign or caring about anything that's going on except when it's time for combat.

I'm starting to get the feeling he just doesn't like RPGs anymore, since he played some fun characters in the past, but now he just plays these... I don't even want to say "generic" characters, because even a generic character could be more engaged than he is.
>>
>>52420449
Perhaps he should take a break. Helped me clear my head and avoid getting really bored with a game I was in. Joined back a week later, felt better.
>>
>>52417295
Guy makes a barbarian who rapes then eats people, monsters and sometimes inanimate objects. Everyone makes lolrandum characters too so its not that bad. Can't remember where he got the race even from, but he ended up getting a pair of third party boots called "Boots of the Raptor."

The gimmick was it transformed your legs into gigantic fucking Utahraptor feet that could fuck shit up, run at incredibly high speeds, all that shit. Normally, this dude was literally just a really hairy (feathery) guy with a big fucking bill sticking out of his head and a propensity for gratuitous violence, but the second he got those boots, he went from just a greatsword singing, murder-squawking badass into a literal fucking deathbird who ran around the place goring people on his huge fuck-off claws. All while squawking maniacally (Not IRL, thank God) and everyone else losing their shit because of the mental image a half-human half-cassowary motherfucker ripping people to shreds with his giant bird feet.

All right, while its gotten old as a trope I feel the need to point out a few things.

First off, gnomes as reckless tinkers goes back before WoW. I think dragonlance was the first, but for all I know they ripped it off somewhere else too.

Second, while its gotten old, its gotten old because a reckless tinker with a desire for scientific advancement and no understanding of consequences is still a much better racial identity than what they are usually described as being. Which is Dwarves. But shittier. And smaller.

It depends on the game. For something like Shadowrun, just needing to pay the bills/pay off the mob so they don't break your legs is a perfectly valid reason to be in the party. Hell, I'm currently playing a character whose main motivation is pic related and it's going pretty great.

I had a hemophobic goblin rogue that used traps and non lethal damage, and smooth talked his way through most things. he was a bounty hunter before the campaign ad his Backstory. the party I was with at the time loved him so much that we've actually started a comic based on him and another few characters.

anything can be great if interesting enough, but generic or unflattering ideas will readily fall flat.

It really depends on the player. I've seen a handful of people do it fairly well. The ones that do act like actual fucking people, whereas the ones that don't use being a woman as a gimick.

One guy in my group has been outright banned from playing female characters. He's already kind of an awkward guy and has trouble getting into character, especially in dialogues. When he tries to play women, it only gets worse.

I mean, it depends on the setting and what the characters are doing.

If they're trying to pay rent, it makes no sense for them to be going into dungeons filled with lethal traps and monsters OSR-style

But if they're just trying to earn some extra cash by killing rats in a basement and then things get out of hand, well...

That's why raveloft is great. The PC's are all there against there will to some extent meaning that finding a way to leave is a valid motivation regardless of background.

The best character I ever made was CN. She was a Priestess of Lolth. All CN needs is something like faith to reign them in and give them proper priorities instead of causing pointless havoc.
>>
I don't mind the "I'm in it for the money" characters.

Those aren't bad. Those are realistic. PCs, in nearly every system, are usually taking on colossal personal risk. Robbing dragons might be incredibly lucrative but at some point the dice are going to come up bad (figuratively or literally). So it's not unrealistic that someone is in it for a paycheck but not convinced that the world is in need of saving, or that he's the one to do it.

What I can't stand are the edgelords who make characters that supply no motivation to work with the party straight from the get-go. There's a lot of variations on this:
>has some overriding goal they can't "waste time" not pursuing
>actively hates one or more members of the party for background reasons and refuses to work with them
>super edgelord antisocial behavior to the point where no sane person would work with them
>>
>>52426058
I, the prospective GM, thought the player did in fact mean 140 cm, or the equivalent 1.4m. But 1.4 cm was in fact written on the character sheet, and yes, that leaves this wandering swordsman at serious risk of being accidentally stepped on.

I tried to point this out to the player, and got rudely rebuffed, so he never made it out of character creation.

>anime character art
A couple of my characters have this, because I can't find other art that fits the look of the character.

I feel you on the backstory shit, though, I tend to have an entire backstory for my characters, though I usually end up having to remove or replace it to fit the setting.

This is one of the things I like about Darkest Dungeon. Even if, in practice, it just ends up as number modifiers, the fact that each character has their own obsessions, delusions, and complexes really makes them feel like the type of people crazy enough and so removed from society that they would take a job where they face death and other horrors on a weekly basis.

I would recommend being open about the fact that the player is being a bit of a ham and stealing the spotlight from other players. Just tell him that the game is not just about his character and that others should have some time in the spotlight.

Also, it might even be too early to tell, seeing as that was only the first session, so the problem might even self-correct (not betting on that happening)

tl;dr just talk to him.

the picture is of a guy called Jerma985 on YouTube.

He's essentially insane and makes all of these really crazy gaming videos and has a very infectious laugh. Look up the Jerma Rumble and you'll see what I mean. It's what the OP is implying when he talks about "shit characters"

Jermaposting isn't really a thing, I just forgot a space.

Also milkman is the shittiest character, batboy had a hell of a fight in him last time he showed up even with absolutely garbage stats at least and glueman was a basketball legend.
>>
>>52435332
Milkman is so shitty he almost wraps back around. Shittiest character is one of the cereal characters that isn't Count Chocula or Captain Crunch imo.

A long time player in my party had a long line of shit edgelord characters we had to deal with.

The worst part is that he never had the confidence to actually play his characters despite writing up ten pages of backstory for each one, leading us to attacking his VERY EVIL AND MONSTROUS looking characters and him not having the ability to rp out of it and join the party. He would literally just say nothing as we filled him with arrows. The worst case went something like this

>my party gets chummy with some pirates and they take us to QUEST ISLAND
>the pirates try to stage a mutiny
>we could easily overpower them all but they really don't want to help us anymore, there's not enough food ect
>they say if we can beat them in a swim race around the island they'll keep working for us
>we pick this guy's ATHLETIC EDGELORD to do this since he has the best shot at winning
>partway through the race the pirate starts to get tired and flounder
>"I hold his head underwater"
>he drowns the pirate
>"I get some driftwood and nail it together like a cross"
>he nails the pirate to the cross
>"skinwings"
>he fucking nails this guy's flesh from his chest to his hands on a cross
>"I carve all thieves on his forehead and put him in the middle of town"
>none of us could do anything about this

We had to tell this guy he couldn't play a pregnant character.

You shouldn't start a game with an immensely developed character, that's what the game is for. (If you're starting tier 1 that is)
>>
>>52420449
He may have fallen into the pit of "REALISM IS IMPORTANT IN MY FANTASY RPG" even though he may not be militant about it.

Often times I find myself playing "bland" characters because in the midst of dragons, warlocks, and Gods being murder fucked by a team of hobos it's nice to just be the odd one out.
>>
>>52438206
>fucked by a team of hobos it's nice to just be the odd one out.

>>
>>52425910
>I know that feel.
>9/10 times I'm the party straight man and moral compass

I am too. The worst of all is that our system has no affinities, I missed only one session, one, and the group ended up burning a tavern, broke one of my golem and buying a slave with OUR money.
>>

>make character with the intention of them being a dour and serious badass
>when they get consistent bad rolls, they just end up looking goofy
This has happened to the same player like four times.

For a different one:
>character is a rugged badass who's been through adventures and accolades aplenty in his backstory
>can't convincingly translate this to in-game competence, constantly has the character act like they're an expert despite giving bad advice or rulings
>>
>>52441159
This is why the DM should make liberal use of advantage modifiers. If the PC has tracked down hundreds of dragons they probably shouldn't be stumped as to what they're looking at when they come across a dragon's footprint in the woods.
>>
>>52436103
I'm sorry but your GM should really be on his ass and make him roll for all that kinda shit, like did you take specs in sewing, leather working, tanning, carpentery? Where is your hammer for the cross? Your skinning knife? The sewing needles? Do you open your inventory while swimming in water? *Bloop* you drop something, do you dive after it? Oh now your body is floating way! Tie it to your belt? Oh gee wizz all this blood is attracting sharks, are you sure you just don't want to swim like normal and let the body float away?

If he has a real plan, I don't see why you can't indulge his silly idea, but just wanting to do lol edgy shouldn't just happen.

And if your dm really picks on him with extra annoying steps, maybe he'd get his shit together a bit more.

>And write a ten page meticulous plan and skill sheet for skinning people, with custom attributes for types of people skinned.

I actually play a female elderly dwarf in my camaign
Absolutely not sexy and played basically as most males, it just fit the backstory better, so why not? Gives a bit of variety as well, as long as you don't turn yourself in some sort of succubus-ass slutty whore or super hot girl everyone in the party wants

Because remember: olden times mean more rape, and you don't want to rape an old-ass dwarf

Consider, for a moment, the world a gnome lives in. It's a hostile world, indeed. If a gnome were to scamper through your front door right now, would you greet it with hostility? Has a gnome ever done anything to you to create this animosity you feel towards them? Gnomes were the cause of the bubonic plague, but that's some time ago. I propose to you, any disease a gnome could spread, a halfling could equally carry. Yet I assume you don't share the same animosity with halflings that you do with gnomes, do you? But they're both vermin, are they not? And except for the nose, they even rather look alike, don't they? However interesting as the thought may be, it makes not one bit of difference to how you feel. If a gnome were to walk in here right now, as I'm talking, would you greet it with a saucer of your delicious milk?

I didn't think so. You don't like them. You don't really know why you don't like them; all you know is you find them repulsive.
