99% of my games are played with my group of friends so we all know each other's decks inside and out. But none of us silverbullet each other. However we all have decks with answers to pretty much everything.

I play on Xmage so there is no meta, but yes, I find great value in color-specific hate cards like Gloom and Anarchy. They definitely need a particular deck to support them however (something with draw-discard loot effects and tutors preferably).

Picture extremely related. I run WE WUZ peaceful people in Hanna and Ghave and damn he always has done serious work. I actually won the game against UG nigger with it, since he almost decked himself with Zegana and ran out of cards in his deck before he could Loam Strip Mine enough times to destroy all my white producing lands. Everyone else scooped when he drew like 70 cards and had enough threats to kill everyone with single combat. I reanimated this guy twice in addition of casting him, since he kept killing him.
There's several other cards, like I also run Spike Weaver and Tainted Æther, plus Mental Misstep and such for other, stronger meta.

>Local Meta

I don't play at shops due to it being UG(x) or just U 99% of the time and that shit is boring.

In my group of friends I recently figured out that my Talrand deck fucks with everything. We've been playing aggro for so long we forgot how to deal with control.

>Friend tries to kill me Sanguine Bond/Angelic Chorus/Daxos The Returned token triggers
>Voidmage Husher
>He does it again
>Peek, drake, draw, bounce voidmage husher and cast her again

Could someone give me a short summary of artifact decks? I've only seen them in action, never played them.

Which color combinations are playable? Are there any viable archetypes besides reanimation?
>>
Is there any non-degenerate Simic general besides Kaseto? I just want to play plain UG aggro without the usual infinite combo goldfishing and hundreds of +1/+1 counters to keep count of.
>>
>>52364888
>without hundreds of +1/+1 counters to keep count of.

>guys i want to play black combo but without all the skeletons and demons and bloody stuff
>>
>>52364799
Mono U with Padeem/Arcum Dagsson works pretty well. Blue has the most synergy with artifacts.
U/W is great with Hannah. A hannah stax deck could be terrifying.
U/B can be fun with Silas Renn. It's kinda janky tho.
U/B/W is probably the most common, with Sydri or Sharuum.
Breya is an alright 4c artifact commander, but she's really overdone right now.

However best artifact commander is clearly Slobad, Goblin Tinkerer. Anyone who says otherwise is clearly misinformed.

Just do Edric, Spymaster of Trest and make it aggro. He'll give incentives for your opponents to look elsewhere during the early game and give you a payoff in the late game.
>>
>>52364946

Atraxa is WAY more focused on retrieving compared to when I first built her, but it may be every meta where I get an entire table trying to hate me out on sight of my glorious 4-colour angel. Reyhan+Thrasios has some pretty pointed artifact hate, half of my reasoning for which being my local meta.

>Blue has the most synergy with artifacts

>despite this, red has Daretti, Feldon, Kurkesh, Slobad and Bosh

Why is this? What is red's niche in the artifact party?
>>
>>52365433
red's niche is that it's good at breaking them, and sometimes, when it fits the flavor, you gotta break artifacts to do stupid things with other artifacts.

I haven't played EDH in 6 months and just found some people at my friends work who play. My friend has some basic knowledge of magic (Like intro packs and dual decks) but now wants me to help him learn a bit more so we can go.

So I was wondering first of all, what kind of power level should I assume they have? I was thinking of taking a Lazav, Dimir Mastermind deck with a fairly high power level because it's my favorite, but I don't want to be that annoying guy.

Also what's a good cheap deck I can build for my friend? I was thinking Daretti, Scrap Savant with mostly cheaper creatures and maybe a Wurmcoil Engine and some other powerful ones I have doubles of.
>>
>>52368784
>what kind of power level should I assume they have?
Are you not able to just reach out and ask them, or have your friend ask them in your stead?
>>
>>52368784
Just show up with a meme chaos deck.
>>
>>52368805
I think it's a lower casual one and I don't want to come in asking questions if they don't really know. I was thinking I'd bring a deck and either scale it back or put more in depending on how the first few games go.
>>
>>52368839
You could try something like Sakashima themed around clones so that your stuff will scale with everyone else's.

I think Daretti is a fine choice. RG beats with Xenagos or angry Omnath would be good too.
>>
>>52363267
Alright friends, how do I get into this card game? anyway to play online to learn?
>>
>>52369175
Yeah there actually is a good online game for people learning, although, not so much for any other players. It's called magic duels and can be played on a smart phone or console i think, along with being on a computer. If you want to start with paper, go to a local hobby shop that sells magic and ask for a intro deck. most stores will give you one for free, since the msrp is only like 4$.
>>
Are Daretti decks generic? I thought I made a pretty cool deck, I hadn't played since before Daretti came out, so I hadn't seen it before, and then someone said that Daretti decks are very common and generally all the same deck.

Thoughts?
>>
>>52369759
along with any precon theyre all kinda samey anon
>>
>>52369786
I suppose I could swap Daretti for Feldon or Bosh... I don't like playing generic decks, kind of a bummer.
>>
>>52369843
If you really want to be a hipster I wouldn't choose any legends that came out this century tbqh. At the very least nothing that exists as a precon will be unique (IIRC he was the most popular from that cycle).

Alternatively, make your daretti deck ACTUALLY unique, like don't make it artifact based, make it based on the looting aspect.

I don't know how you thought "Wow, an artifact commander from a precon, I am going to build him around artifacts. Gosh, I must be unique. A total free spirit and radical thinker"

No, you painted inside the lines. Shoot for something people haven't seen before or non-obvious synergies if you think being a snowflake is important.
>>
>>52369759
I actually haven't seen a single Daretti deck since Breya came out.
>>
I HAVE ASCENDED

I played my first successful combo win tonight. I was playing brion stoutarm, but he wasn't relevant to the combo

>removed something with stasis snare earlier in game
>cast oblivion ring and exile stasis snare
>next turn drop worldgorger dragon
>oblivion ring leaves, stasis snare returns, exile dragon, loop
>one of my lands was kabira crossroads, gain infinite life in addition to infinite mana
>break the loop by exiling something else with o-ring
>cast refurbish to return ring of three wishes from graveyard to play
>tutor up aetherflux reservoir
>deathstar laser every single creature and opponent

boy that felt good.
>>
>>52365299
Run Sydri Aetherflux. You can do whatever the fuck you want artifact-wise, run a lifegain shell, deathtouch shenanigans, Mechanized Production, artifacts that can deal damage to creatures on tap... she's versatile, you can do all kinds of fun stuff

>>
>>52371881

Reanimation is getting your cards in graveyard to the battlefield without paying their mana cost.
Recursion is getting your cards in graveyard to the battlefield by paying their mana cost, or getting them to your hand to indirectly get them to the battlefield by paying their mana cost.

If I want to choose a Commander that my opponent will laugh at, that I can actually use to curbstomp tryhards (not actual decent competitive players) with, what should I pick?

Yomiji, Who Bars The Way can look like a somewhat controlling "I want to play Legendaries" deck that suddenly combos out in numerous ways with cards like Hope of Ghirapur and/or Paradox Engine, or lock people out with Mindslaver and Yosei. It has the drawback of being mono-white though.

Iname, Life Aspect can do a terrible mono-green dredge impression that has several janky Myojin combos. It pretty much folds to grave hate, although it can just do green things and abuse the stigma on land destruction.

Blue has some solid options in Patron of the Moon (Sunder), Tomorrow (Extra turns) or Hakim (Treachery), but Blue is scary and mean, and always up to no good. Iname, Death Aspect could also be a good choice, but I feel like that card pretty transparently tries to do something somewhat busted.

There's also Anya, Merciless Angel + Obliterate effects, if you can 50% someone reliably enough (or player one of several things that grant indestructible.)

Lyzolda, Ishkanah and Ghost Council are also all pretty janky generals that can kill with infinite colored mana, but that sounds a bit lame.

I'll most likely be using atraxa as general, I'd much rather go Ydris colors but Atraxa supports the strategy better imo.

>>52375054
>I don't want to paint a gient target on my back

You're gonna have that target Skittles or not, infect is gonna attract loads of hate even with janky commanders so you either play a proper infect and try to win 1v3 everytime or you'll get focussed and lose
>>
>>52374902
That would require using a general that isn't laughable though.

>>52374945
It's not fun if your deck isn't dependable on using your general in some, and could just be replaced by something else and work just as well if not better.

Skittles paints the target immedeatly, other generals just as soon as others realize it's infect and I'm cool with that.

Ok infect is all about one-shot kills out of nowhere, if you're dropping creatures with the hope to kill your opponents 1-2 poison counters a turn you're doing it wrong, they're gonna see infect and they are gonna react accordingly trying to get you out of the game as soon as possible.
Basically build voltron and be sure to include infect creatures, a way to get haste, a way to not get blocked and big pump spells like Hatred. If you want some secret tech pic related can kill the whole table at once.

>>

>>52375232

how is that a removal? According to the rules you can't sac other players creatures

but maybe i just dont see it, do you cast it on enemy creature and hopes that he sacrifices his other creatures for a small buff?
>>
>>52370018
Well I actually started the deck as a Tuktuk deck, which I do think is generally pretty unique. But then I realized that you can't voltron with artifact Tuktuk and that kind of ruined my plans, so I changed it to Daretti and now it's all about saccing modular creatures into each other and making the biggest one unblockable and hexproof to beat faces with. Tons of sac, tons of draw, tons of discard, tons of graveyard retrieval.

So yeah, I guess overall it's not much different from the average Daretti deck, but that certainly wasn't my play going into it lol.

>>52370036
That's good to know lol thank you
>>
>>52375101
>I want a bad general
>in a good deck

This literally cannot be done dude.

Best I can do is subvert laughable into largely unknown and suggest Xira Arien or Adun Oakenshield as Jund goodstuff that actually use their commander.
>>
>>52375325
No, you cast it on another person's creature, because you control the Enchantment, you control the ability, so you sac the creature yourself. You get back Fallen Ideal and they lose a creature before they can respond, because saccing the creature is paying a cost. Gets around indestructible and regeneration!

no, you're the owner of it, but it's on the enemies side of the board, so he's the controller of it.

>>52375433
Oops, you're right. I need to apologize to a friend...
>>
>>52375394
>/tg/ being bad at magic again
You're most likely baiting, but it specifically says that the creature now has that ability, it's not on the enchantment. So the creature's controller is the only one that can activate it.
>>
>>52375394
That's not how it works, you own the enchantment but the creature gains the ability, so only it's controller can sac it.
>>
>>52375433
Also not true. Something being on the enemy side of the board doesn't show who the controller is. Oblivion ring is still something you control when you enchant an enemy creature.

What makes this anon's plan fail is that the enchantment says that THE CREATURE has the sac ability, not the enchantment.
>>
>>52375433
No that is also not true.

You control the aura.

The opponent controls the creature.

The enchanted creature has flying and "Sacrifice a creature: This creature gets +2/+1 until end of turn."

Just like if it had "G: Regenerate this creature."

Only the controller of a creature can activate its abilities unless otherwise stated.

Damn /tg/.

>>
>>52374882
You can use Hua Tuo, who seems like a joke, then use Lurking Predators, Call of the Wild, and stuff to discard big guys. Greater Good works great for that. Also any scry you can get your hands on, lost in the woods is pretty good too if you know what you're doing. Dump Worldspine Wurm into graveyard from hand, Hua Tuo him on top of the library, then cheat him out for 4 mana with Call of the Wild when the enemy swings at you.

Just make sure to load up on any form of creature removal you can. Desert Twister, Beast Within, Lux Cannon, Predator Flagship, and a Plummet for good measure, etc.

Any card draw you can get as well, Garruk's Packleader, Triumph of Ferocity, Harmonize, Greater Good (As mentioned before).

I have beat goodstuff decks with this deck before and it works very well. There's a good chance you'll never see another Hua Tuo deck lol.

Another idea: Rorix Bladewing with tons of buff shit and mana doublers/rocks to one shot someone by making Rorix a 25/5 flying haste on turn whatever.
>>
>>52374920
UG Ezuri looks like a cool option that isn't as fotm as Atraxa. You get good spells to protect your creatures, your general makes you infect dudes lethal quickly, and you get pretty much the two best colors for infect. If you want to go a snowflake variant, I'd use Meren and just keep recurring Ichor Rats, Core Prowler and Maulfist Revolutionary.

>>
>>52375494

You're usually doubling 1-2 power creatures wich isn't that much, and if you're doubling pumped creatures you may as well use some equipment with double strike instead wich gives evasion as well

I love this Idea, but I already have an abzan graveyard recursion deck, maybe I'll just add an Ichor Rats there to combo out with Lark + Karmic Guide.
>>
>>52375640
Not a big fan of storage lands as they never did much when i tried them. I usually go for battlelands and cheklands and most of the times they come in untapped so i'm happy with the current manabase.
Parallax Wave is a great card i didn't know about, i swapped out Utter End for it.
>>
>>52375509
Hua Tuo actually sounds semi-legit. You can set up wacky infinite combos with Great Oak Guardian, Eternal Witness and co. let's you use anything in your graveyard, and you can always just cast big green creatures if all else fails.

Not very sold on Rorix, seems too fragile in multiple different ways.

>>52375389
It's not supposed to actually be a bad general, just look like it. I think Yomiji could be deceptively competitive in a ~75% meta.

I heavily advice you to put in those storage lands
In Atraxa you get mad value out of them, they might be a bit slow at first but they're definetely better than vivid lands.
Good to see you're already running mirrodin's core.
>>
>>52375824
>maybe I'll just add an Ichor Rats there to combo out with Lark + Karmic Guide
Just reminding that Ichor rats gives each player poison counter so if you are going for a loop make sure that opponent/s have 1 more poison on them than you.

If I have an encoded cipher card on my invisible stalker, then hit someone with it to cast the copy, can I twincast that? And if I do, dare I ask, can I encode the twincasted copy? >>52376040
You can Twincast the copy from the cipher trigger, yes. You can't encode the copy on one of your creatures any more than you can encode the copy from the cipher trigger, because the spell has to be an actual literal card.

I don't know of any card that becomes another instant or sorcery, or otherwise lets an instant or sorcery become a copy of another, but in the event that such a card is printed, it would let you encode it on a creature, but I don't think it would actually let you cast any copy. (See 702.98a, indicating that the card in exile needs to have Cipher, which the copy would cease to have upon entering exile.) Unless the original spell actually had cipher for some reason or another, in which case the encoded creature would cast copies of the original spell, not the one it was copied to.

>Privileged Position
>Greater Auramancy
>Sigarda, Host of Herons
>Platinum Emperion

Unfortunately I don't. edhrec has the main stays of the deck.

Pingers and other upkeep deal damage are what you are looking for, along with anything that has flash and/or large colorless mana costs.

Also running cards like Mass Hysteria, then Rakdos charming the board and dropping 2-3 big Eldrazi or Darksteel Colossus is part of the fun.

You can also go down a larger Demon monoblack route and drop cards like Gray Merchant of Asphodel to give you huge discounts.

Master of Cruelties also counts for life loss and can allow you drop very big X costed Walking Ballistas/Hangerback walkers.
>>
>>52377628
Not unless you have a way to prevent -X/-X removal
>>
>>52377628
The best way to crack that boardstate is probably with effects that "Blank" cards. Humility is the most notable, but Gaddock Teeg still stops you from landing it. Sudden Spoiling would also work until you add an effect that gives the player hexproof. To crack what you listed + Player Hexproof + Teeg you need Arcane Lighthouse + Teeg-safe "Gain control" or exile. Either exile or steal/sac Teeg and follow up with a mass exile or bigger gain control effect. You can do this in White, Red, Blue, or Colorless Artifacts, which plays around Iona.

You can also shred the "Invincible" board state with mass -x/-x (Not counters or Melira could defend). The most unstoppable way to manage this, getting around Teeg and a magical christmasland 5 Ionas is Bane of the Living, who is cast face-down (Colorless) and then flips up with Morph (an ability) to give all creatures -x/-x. x=2 removes Teeg, 4 takes out the Angel (Enabling combo wins that don't rely on life), 5 melts Sigarda (letting you fire All Is Dust), and 8 will mop up all the creatures involved.

If Iona isn't on Black, you can disassemble it in waves with Infest to off Teeg and then Languish or Mutilate to get the rest.

I want to make an WB/Orzhov deck with life gain/loss theme. I was thinking of Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim as my general, is there a better option?
>>
>>52379358
Karlov of the ghost council is another good one that plays slightly differently. Karlov prefers lots of smaller life gain effects compared to Ayli and can easily get large enough to make commander damage feasible. You can't really go wrong with either one for a life gain/loss theme.
>>
>>52379358
No matter what you do, Oloro will be stronger, and you will always have that in thr back of your mind.

i've actually been working on an orzhov lifegain deck for a while. you basically have 3 options, ayli, kambal and karlov. i've played the first two extensively and i've seen the third one played a lot so i can write some words

here's a quick rundown on ayli and kambal.

ayli
>mostly creature/goodstuff based (in my opinion, at least)
>two ways to go at the commander
1
>building around ayli's vindicate requires a weird build-around that can be difficult to get to work
>ie. you need 50 life, a creature fodder to sacrifice to use vindicate reliably
>if you drop below 50 life or ayli dies, the deck will probably turn into trash
>i don't recommend this
2
>reanimator, lifegain as a subtheme
>instead of relying on the vindicate on ayli, just use ayli as a good blocker, a good value engine and a sac outlet
>works well with value plays and reanimation, but is generally slow and not too powerful, golgari, dimir and even monoblack are both more powerful as reanimators
>she has a few cute interactions though, like tree of perditions, and in a creature based reanimator she can make great use of cards like true conviction and whip of erebos

kambal
>noncreature based (in my opinion, at least)
>requires very little build-around for the commander himself, he's a 3 drop that you can plop down reliably and he usually won't get removed until he's churned out a bunch of life
>works well with full-retard lifegain strats, beacon of immortality, shattered angel, aetherflux reservoir, felidar sovereign, etc
>can use the extra life to also pay for black's draw effects, which can be used to fuel your superior removal
>you can also build for pillowforty in the process with cards like no mercy, ghostly prison, mystic barrier etc.
>overall the deck feels efficient and fun, at least to me

karlov
>lifegain triggers to create a big voltron guy that can also exile creatures for cheap
>doesn't really do anything when karlov is out of the game, but is very timmy
>cheap to build

There is no way to get Obzedat stuck in exile by countering the ability.
>>
>>52381033
>>52381109
This. I'm pretty sure it enters without a trigger right?
>>
>>52381109
The second part of the second ability creates a delayed trigger that can be separately responded to and countered when it triggers and gets put on the stack.
I had to go look that up because I thought the same thing, but yea, you can Trickbind or something the latter part of the effect.

http://mtg.gamepedia.com/Triggered_ability
esp. in the examples, the one on Ignorant Bliss
>>
>>52381109
If Obzedat is already in exile, and you counter the ability, it's stuck without a Pull from Eternity. If you put him into command zone with the EOT trigger then you're clear, but the player hadn't.
>>
>>52381163
If you put it into the command zone instead of exile, then it won't return for free at eot from its ability.
>>
>>52380756
>But unfortunately a person at my lgs has taken that second one to an extreme he has 25 edh decks

thats alot of proxies, did he print them out and glue on basic land? because thats alot of work
>>
>>52381180
Yes, it does in fact. The same happens with Norin the Wary. The ability is not dependent on where they actually go, so long as it's a public zone.
>>
>>52381163
Oh ok, then its def stupid to put into exile rather than the command zone.

>>52381180
It tracks if you put to the command zone.
>>
>>52381180
And this is because of how the ability is worded. Ghost Council of Orzhova however would work, since you can put it in zone and it keeps returning anyway.
>>52381149
>>52381109
You counter the delayed trigger that happens on upkeep, that leaves the commander forever in exile without Pull From Eternity or Riftsweeper, which can be used to zone the commander.
>>
>>52381220
What do you mean with 'tracks'?>>52381209
Wrong. You're not exiling the card, so it never returns, just like you won't get death triggers from your commander if you put it to the zone.

>>52381031
>>52380271

You are exiling the card and then using the command z<one replacement effect. Obzedat's delayed trigger does not care where he ended up since it does not say return Obzedat from exile.

The ability is not actually dependent on the card being exiled, but on you performing the action. If you go through the motion, you can replace the destination with the command zone, and still have it come back. For real.
>>
>>52381460
Wouldn't that keep increasing the commander tax though? What if he bites a Murder some turns later?
>>
>>52381523
No, commander tax goes up after you _cast_ it from the command zone.
>>
>>52381523
i'm fairly sure command tax only increases on-cast
>>
>>52381445
>>52381460
Wrong. The card says "if you do", which means that it has to go to the exile to return, but if the card is worded like with Ghost Council or Norin, command zone replacement trick works.
>>
>>52381551
Nope it does not have to stay in Exile, you only have to attempt to and have the ability resolve.

i personally believe that the best way to get around that is to

>>
>>52381804
Wjat are you talking about? That's exact opposite he would say
>>
>>52381853
The card does not say return to the battlefield from exile. It instead says return to the battlefield.

And you ARE exiling the card there is just a replacement effect on top of it.

And for your confirmation, plenty of people play Norin and Obzedat in a format where counter target triggered ability is common enough that they would be unplayable othereise.
>>
>>52381871
Why can't I get my Grave Pact triggers from my Savra then?
Explain that atheists.
>>
>>52381904
Die = enter the graveyard.

replacement effect means it never enters the graveyard. For Obzedat you still attempt to exile so the ability resolves fully.
>>
>>52381724
Even though I have a lot of expensive stuff from years of playing I agree with both of those points, that's why I only have 5 edh decks and am working on a 6th but currently don't an extra 150 to spend on things on stuff I don't own currently.
>>
>>52381544
Ye, but I mean, the first recast after he dies would cost a lot; that's what I mean
>>
>>52382221
Stop posting with a trip.

And you don't even understand what the anon is saying, learn the rules.
>>
>>52382221
You have only cast Obzedat once regardless of how many times he 'flickers', because of that he will only cost 2 more after someone murders him.
>>
>>52382221
Commander tax increases only when you cast your commander, not when it dies or gets exiled. Same goes with Derevi: if you use her ability to put her to the field, the commander tax never rises. She can get killed 10 times and still she would cost 3 mana to cast.
>>
>>52382221
Commander Tax only ticks up when you cast your commander as a spell from the Command Zone.
Having your commander enter the battlefield from the command zone as an effect, or casting your commander from any other zone (ex. from hand) does not increase the tax counter at all.
>>

Cards like this one, and the Kithkin and blue/black cards from Eventide-Lorwyn have a special place in my heart. Not only is the art fantastic, but it all has that German fairytale feel to it.

Is there enough support to build an entire Commander deck out of it? I want water themes, so I'm definitely playing blue. But I can't decide on red or black to go with it.

Any cool themes I should include in the deck?
>>
Wait, now I'm curious, I have a few questions.

If you have an It that betrays, and your opponent is enchanted with wheel of sun and moon, will it pull sacrificed creatures from the opponent's library?
Also, if you sacrifice an It that betrays, will it recur itself?

Furthermore, if a card existed that created a replacement effect that would put cards into your hand instead of the graveyard, would an enemy it that betrays be able to take a sacrificed creature that went to your hand?

On another note, if you oblivion ring something, then pull it out of exile, and then exile it again, the oblivion ring won't recognize it when it leaves the battlefield right?

And lastly, is the general rule for cards that don't specify where they "look" when they want to return a card from somewhere to the battlefield after that card left the battlefield, that the effect will search in the first zone it entered, and only there?

I'm not a judge, but here's how I interpret it:
>If you have an It that betrays, and your opponent is enchanted with wheel of sun and moon, will it pull sacrificed creatures from the opponent's library?
It depends on what has been played most recently. As far as I can tell they're not dependent.

>Also, if you sacrifice an It that betrays, will it recur itself?
Not sure what you mean by this.

>Furthermore, if a card existed that created a replacement effect that would put cards into your hand instead of the graveyard, would an enemy it that betrays be able to take a sacrificed creature that went to your hand?
Again, most recently played takes precedence.

>On another note, if you oblivion ring something, then pull it out of exile, and then exile it again, the oblivion ring won't recognize it when it leaves the battlefield right?
No, if the oblivion ring gets destroyed the card will stay in exile.

>
And lastly, is the general rule for cards that don't specify where they "look" when they want to return a card from somewhere to the battlefield after that card left the battlefield, that the effect will search in the first zone it entered, and only there?
Cards that don't specify targets the card's ID. Every time a creature changes zones it gets a new ID, which is why your Oblivion Ring example works like it does. This _technically_ doesn't care about which zone it's in, because it could look anywhere, but since the card would receive a new ID if it changed zone it practically only looks in one zone.
