How often do you dragon?
>>
Do liches whose phylactery is destroyed go to the afterlife as a normal mortal or does their soul get destroyed completely?
>>
>>52303720
Get called a power gaming munchkin because my three favorite classes are the monk, druid and mystic. Umm what?
>>
>>52303764
You are a powergaming munchkin if you play anything other than an Int based fighter.
>>
Anons? If WoTC decided to do an Unearthed Arcana giving us 5e updates of old races, what races would you like to see get the playable treatment?

Personally, top of my list would be Lupins, Aranea, Dray, Diaboli, Dhampyrs, Shardminds and Calibans. Also, a decent update of the Warforged and Changeling would be lovely.
>>
So what conclusion did we come to on vampire+sea?

I'm also interested in this:

>Misty Escape. When it drops to 0 hit points outside its resting place, the vampire transforms into a cloud of mist (as in the Shapechanger trait) instead offal lin g unconscious, provided that it isn't in sun light or running water. If it can't transform, it is destroyed.

>Shapechanger. If the vampire isn't in sun light or running water, it can use its action to polymorph into a Tiny bat or a Medium cloud of mist, or back into its true form... it can't pass through water.

Does that mean that if a sea is dropped on it and deals enough force damage to bring it to 0 HP, but we assume it's not flowing and can't permakill it, it turns into mist but then can't move? Like, it's just stuck at the bottom of the sea until the sea evaporates?

I AM THE GREETEST
>>
>>52303821
Lupins: Faux-French Swashbuckler-style wolf-people from Mystara, alongside nomadic barbarian clans and Amerindian-inspired tribes who ride around on giant wolves hunting werewolves. A PC race introduced in Mystara and in Red Steel, for 1st and 2nd edition. Updated to 3e in Dragon Magazine.

Aranea: Sapient, sorcerously talented, shapeshifting giant spiders. Hail from the Red Steel setting in AD&D.

Dray: An experiment in evolving humans into dragons, originating from the Dark Sun adventure "City by the Silt Sea" for AD&D.

Diaboli: Peaceful, Chaotic-Good aligned refugees from the Plane of Dreams who happen to look like stereotypical purple-skinned devils. Mystaran race from 1st edition, updated to 3e in Dragon Magazine.

Dhampyrs: Humans with blood lineage tainted by vampirism without being "half-vampire" templated. I don't think these guys were actually ever playable in D&D outside of 4th edition.

Shardmind: Sapient, golem-like race of psionic energy hosted inside bodies of pure crystal. Hail from 4th edition's PHB 3.

Calibans: Fantasy mutants born of black magic, prenatal curses, the sins of their parents, etc. Hail from the 3rd edition update of Ravenloft.
>>
How far can you take the description of immunity to nonmagical attacks? Is the creature immune to bullets, artillery, nukes?
>>
>>52303720
Lhizjit has wares if you have coin.
>>
>>52303724

"A lich is created by an arcane ritual that traps the wizard's soul within a phylactery. Doing so binds the soul to the mortal world, preventing it from traveling to the Outer Planes after death."

I think that implies that the soul is the phylactery, so it's super-killed when the phylactery is destroyed.
>>
>>52303874
Personally? Bullets and artillery, sure. Protection from Normal Missiles explicitly included stuff like that back in, what, 2nd edition? 1st? Nukes I'd say would require actual Atomic/Radiation Resistance, since they're an energy attack and not, strictly speaking, a physical one.

Every dragon should be a huge thing, and the player should be hearing rumors and tales about it long before encountering it. The only dragon in my campaign so far is an ancient green one worshipped as a god on another planet. (And it is actually a god, can give spells to clerics and everything)
>>
>>52303764
Monk's fine but the other two are pretty broken/munchkinny.

Monk can feel broken depending on what you're fighting.

Only wizards and clerics get to have fun.
>>
>>52303886
In what way does it at all imply the soul is the phylactery?
It clearly stated the soul is WITHIN the phylactery. The phylactery is essentially just something preventing the soul from moving on to the afterlife as it normally would. Its like putting your valuables in a safe bolted to the floor.

Oh boy, here we go, the weeaboos are out in force this morning to defend their anime class that can fill any niche in the game with like 2 disciplines and still have like 8 to spare. Lets not even talk about how they basically have Subtle Casting all the time and some of their powers are outright broken RAW (Infinite Darkness, an attack that's not specified as a standard action, several powers who's secondary effects take place even on a passed save, ect).

Mystic is trash, and the people who are defending it are even worse trash who have no sense of game-design, balance, or are too enamoured with their ideas for dumb out-of-place psychic anime characters to see past the rose tinted blinders they've bolted into their own skull with a power tools.
>>
>>52304051

They still cap at 5th level spell. They can't break campaign like Wizard

When you can make your argument without using any, I'll bother responding legitimately
>>
>>52304068
>>52304074
Hate to agree with the guy, but he IS right about the RAW stuff. Mystic doesn't even look like it was proof-read before release. There's some stuff in there seriously breaks the game even at really low-levels.
>>
This Ranger in my table wants to be a mercenary type character and is expected his party members to pay for his services.

Half the party is okay, the other doesn't and this one guy is like "whatever."

What do you think of this? I find it rather pointless cause as he's joining them, they're gonna be splitting treasure anyway when they dungeon crawl and get quest rewards for slapping shit for townies.
>>
>>52304106
>This Ranger in my table wants to be a mercenary type character and is expected his party members to pay for his services.

He gets paid by his share of treasure. Them's the breaks.

Same rules as if someone is asking to get paid for healing.
>>
>>52304105
Yeah, it's not balanced very well (especially with some things like a focus that benefits only a single talent, or an aoe attack that annihilates everything in front of you) and some shit is worded pretty terribly to boot

I just hate people who think buzzwords make an argument better
They're pretty much faggots who just want to start le internet fights instead of actually convince people of their stance
>>
>>52304051
Cry as much as you want doesn't change the fact the mystic and psionics will be players options sooner rather then later.

Mystic is trying to be every class in the game "BUT WITH PSYCHIC POWERS", and that's bad class design. Even as someone who likes the alot of the ideas of Mystics, trying to make mystics into EVERYTHING was a bad idea.
>>
>>52304190
My problem is not knowing how to restrict it more without making it worthless.
At least my players aren't the like to break shit with no reason. Unless it's cool

Honestly the main fixes the class needs is more focus (limit disciplines by class instead of letting every class take every discipline) and do some bug-fixing on the obviously broken powers like infinite-duration darkness.

Also, for the two children, I'm not sure who's baiting anymore, but be the bigger man and stop replying to it. Both of you.

To move on from the shitposter:

That sounds kind of dull, anon
>>
>>52304230
I like the wide scope, and wouldn't mind having a sort of "superclass" for every power source. I feel like 5e is very well fit for such type of classes.
>>
I wanted to alter the Curse of Strahd: Death House backstory. Is this better, worse or the same?
In the original, the father had a stillborn, bastard son (presumably with the nursemaid), and later Strahd killed them all for unrelated reasons. I want to change it so the baby survives birth, and the mother had the child sacrificed to the cult to punish the father's infidelity. The resulting infighting between the two cult leaders detroyed the cult, and the baby's spirit winds up haunting the house.
>>
>>52304230
Reduce number of order they can take as they level up, limit what they can take depending on their chosen order, fix a few buggy powers there problem solved.

Before the string of posts got nuked (Thanks either mods or the posters who realized to delete their own mess), someone mentioned that Psionics essentially have infinite Subtle Spell because Psionic abilities don't require verbal, somatic, or material components.

How do people feel about this? Is it overpowered to have a caster who can essentially do things just by thinking about them and can't be countered spell'd because their disciplines aren't really spells?

I think that certain psionics should certainly have visible or audible components to them. And some of the things actually do require movement, such as bestial claws since you have to be able to move to make the attack.
Extrapolation of the components required is pretty easy, but it would be nice if they actually listed them.

That being said, psionics get shut down pretty hard by things like golems and other constructs. Also certain undead.

Counterpsionic discipline would be cool to have.

Let's assume a bulette weighs a single metric ton. It's probably a lot more, but I want to keep this calculation simple.

One gram of antimatter-matter annihilation produces an explosion equivalent to ~43 kilotons of TNT.

An antimatter bulette diving into the ground and self-annihilating would create an explosion one million times more powerful.

That's 43,000 megatons, or a little more than 750 Tsar Bombas (or three million Little Boys). You could kiss the entire continent goodbye.

>Lets not even talk about how they basically have Subtle Casting all the time
Fair enough, I probably would implement the manifestation display rules from 3.5
>some of their powers are outright broken RAW
Most of their powers are badly written and if you were expecting WotC to suddenly become competent in proofreading on a playtest document you're sadly mistaken.

I mean, these are the people that told me in OotA to take an Octopus, remove it's ability to survive outside of the ocean for any period of time, and put it in the underdark with an ink cloud ability it can't even use. Proofreading is not their forte.

I still disagree, identity works fine at cutting down the shit if a community is exclusively identity-based. The discords problem was that it was trying to get along with 4chan where nobody has an identity, so banning retards from the actual discord for throwing a shitshow there didn't stop them from coming here to throw a shitshow.

But I suppose this is dangerously close to the kind of talk everyone got sick of already, so I'll leave things here and agree to disagree.

>Add a fear aura
Babysitting your PCs to run automatically from bad things considering the DC of a lot of auras.
Kinda makes sense. Though some high CR enemies are not so obviously frightening. Though, then again, a god in a human form should still have power leak out, sensibly, so all but the sneakiest of things should exude an aura of power.

Fear seems a bit silly after you've fought the creature far too many times though.
>>

>>
>>52304916
>Fear seems a bit silly after you've fought the creature far too many times though.
Obviously, the DC is reduced every time they fight it or if they have information on it relevant to combat. Especially weaknesses.
>>
>>52304981
Yeah, that's a thing that should be done.

Still, it can result in situations such as the players coming up with some grand plan to escape the creature and then being unable to do anything but fight it because of fear.

Pretty niche cases, but generally fear takes options away from the players which can actually potentially force players to have to fight something instead of running.

For example, if players are in a corner, they can't willingly move out of that corner and must awaittheir death.
If players have a plan to blind or stun with an attack to cover their getaway, they have disadvantage to hit in the first place.

So I'd call it babysitting. You're just telling the players 'You MUST run' and taking away power from them rather than saying 'You should run' or even just going to the full extent to describe just how horrifying this monster is. You should hopefully have taught players how to identify encounters that they're really fucked on (Knowledge checks, the fact they KNOW they aren't prepared for it, the monster killing something they know they could only barely beat themselves or the skeletons of said creatures, a demonstration of its power against the players perhaps before the creature gets free (The creature is chained but hits a player for a lot of damage but can't just chase down all the players then eat them then breaks free), and so forth.

If you're throwing CR creatures way above the party in, you should do it right, not 'Okay, now you run.'

Who would rule that? On a supernatural aura of fear like dragons then maybe but if just naturally scared and you have zero ability to get away then you turn around and fight like a normal person. This exists so that solo monsters can do a thing.

I gave a lot of advice on CoS in a recent thread, I'll just copypaste it from there.
>Use Strahd. Use him in unexpected, unconventional ways. Strahd visits the party in disguise and gives them a quest! Does it lead into a trap? Maybe, but maybe it's legitimate. Why would Strahd give the party a quest? Maybe he needs them to venture outside of Barovia, so they'll bring something to him - maybe something he wants to use for an escape. The party doesn't need to know they've left his domain, by the way.
>Or maybe he offers them an advice - seek out a wise old mentor, a vampire hunter van Richten, as only he knows Strahd's weakness. Then he spies on the party - they'll lead him to the hunter for sure.

Full-fledged Dragon, not often, though they're being set up as the final antagonists of my current campaign.

The setting we're playing in does Dragons a little differently. All dragons start off as Wyverns which are like standard D&D dragons in terms of strength but are bestial in intelligence and have no breath weapon. Then these Wyverns can be possessed by spirits from the Elemental planes and that makes a Dragon. So far our party has only faced a Wyvern, no real Dragons.

There is a foreign empire called Teiidae which is ruled by a counsel of Ancient Dragons that has been teased several times but never directly involved in the main quest. Players just hit level 10 though and after they finish their current arc the narrative focus is going to shift to the Dragons who will become the primary antagonists.

>>
>>52306430
So, let me make a logical argument here.

If KI only flows through living bodies, and does not flow through non-living bodies, then since a body is either living or non-living, and not both, there is either KI flowing in a body or there isn't.

Because this relationship is now one to one, that means it is invertible. It then follows that given a body, I can decide whether or not KI flows through it by the property of it being living or not.

Hence if the anti-magic field destroys the flow of KI, then no living body can be inside the anti-magic field since only living bodies have KI flowing through them. So your BBEG and the Monk are both dead. This is absurd, thus by reductio ad absurdum I refute that the Monk died because the BBEG died the moment he cast anti-magic field on himself.

It's clear that the mechanics and lore of the Mystic are not finalized.
In the previous version of the Mystic, psionics were developed thanks to the influence of the Far Realm. It also had this quip:
"Psionics and magic are two distinct forces. In general, an effect that affects a spell has no effect on a psionic effect. There is one important exception to this rule. A psionic effect that reproduces a spell is treated as magic."

In short, don't treat UA as finished products. Especially when it comes to the """""lore""""" in them.

Canonically, in the goddamn dnd settings, psionics isn't affected by antimagic.

According to mystic v3, psionics is the mental only manipulation of magic. Wizards use magic through study and V,S,M componets. Right now, everything is magic. Mechanically, psionics use spell points while wizards use spell slots. That's a wrap!
>>
>>52306796
The UA isn't even fucking official material, anon.
My point has MUCH more basis than yours.
>>
Headcanon coming through:

>Wizards cast magic by using their intellect to recite the spells engraved on the Nether Scrolls, which manipulates the Weave and causes an effect.
>Sorcerers do something similar but they do it by instinct.
>Psions use the power of the mind to manipulate the Weave directly.
>Bards ummmm haven't figured that out yet.
>Clerics are granted their power by the gods.
>>
>>52306810
In that case, anti-magic field really doesn't affect psionics, but only because psionics doesn't exist.
Your move.

It may not seem like it to you, but to the growing crowd responding to you, you're the one looking autistic because you're getting angry that people are telling you that a company changes its lore.

When you said it's not psionics you went full retard, because that's not your decision to make. If they make it magic then it's magic, you have no input and any reasoning you do is invalid because you're ignoring the fact that they can change how things work at any given time.
>>

Only if you lack basic logic skills.
You can call a microwave a toaster, but in the end they're totally different, and you'd be wrong no matter how you look at it.

They decide what is a microwave and what is a toaster because it is there universe and they can change it how they want.

That's the thing, your logic is built on ignoring that. It can change whether or not you agree with the change. And if you try to reason things out by ignoring the basic concept, then you're not actually being reasonable. You're just trying to prove yourself right instead of understand what's going on.

So here's the thing, a little improv here and PCs being unpredictable got me to an impulse-quest that I thought on the fly based on ideas I've had for the campaign. Here's what I got:

>2 quests
>seemingly unconnected at a glance
>Quest 1 - solve a cold case relating to the death of a politician's lover a year ago
>Quest 2 - said politician has reason to believe an assassination attempt is being made on the party (they're rather well known by now)
>Ultimately want to connect them as PCs uncover the story for both

Party suspects politician and it's good cause there's that part where I want them to realize he's not the culprit in all of this. Would make for good drama if they didn't figure it out soon. That said, I'm at a loss on how to connect both. Should I make the murderer of the lover be the assassin? That's the simplest route but I can't help but feel I can do something more with it. Was hoping for some ideas here.

Another goal is that these quests hint the super shadow org that's enveloping the entire city (and possibly the world.) They are the real culprits here but the players will be capturing scapegoats at the end without realizing it. I'm tempted to make the quests fully closed in story but at the same time leave a very glaring common loose end that bothers the party so when the shadow org fully reveals themselves later in the campaign, it'll be that "AHA!" moment for them when looking back. If they choose to pursue these ends, then figuring out the shadow org early will also be a nice thread for them to follow.

That's so far the rough outline I have for the upcoming adventure. My PCs are busy dicking around the city looking for clues and we ended at them questioning a potential suspect in the assassination attempt as they put the cold case on the side.

He's a long time member of the org and more of a boss (think mob style) he technically had nothing to do with the murder, other than maybe ordering it or being the contact in the city for the real killer.

Another twist is certain high profile jobs they literally use alter memory on people who have proven too valuable to dispose of, but then even under a zone of truth they know nothing because that memory is replaced.

Simplest way would be they've done this for so long and use the best for these types of jobs so there is little to no evidence.

And you have given your BBEG quite the plot armour.
>>
>>52307922

I should be able to target anything that has water on it, because the light reflected would be different if there was no water on it, hence I see that it is water on it if there is water on it, even if I do not know what it looks like without water on it. The real crux here is freestanding.

Well, as far as the octopus goes, the part of the stat block as I remember it that actually says they must be in the water, was the part that was replaced.
