Though you just reminded me...in the campaign that just ended, I was playing a drow. This drow, actually: >>52301521 . But, my drow had been born on the surface of the world and raised by a human innkeeper in a reasonably prosperous fishing village. So she ate human food in human quantities growing up, unlike drow, who I imagine tend to not get a lot of vital nutrients, and have to deal with famine frequently (at least the ones in Menzoberranzan - it has a population of over 20,000 drow and yet all its food supposedly comes from a single tiny area of its cave...basically I imagine the drow as being North Korea - see pic for justification).

As a result of having a far better nutrition when growing up, my drow character stood 5' 5'' tall - average for a human woman, but a positive giant by drow standards since they average 4' 7'' (males) to 4' 9'' (females). She'd stand out immensely in any crowd in a drow city.

I'm...not a fan. While I hated 4E, and liked Eilistraee, I would prefer if death had somewhat more permanency, even if it's stupid. If the drow need a good goddess, I would have preferred a new one, or maybe an ascended mortal.

Liriel Baenre springs immediately to mind as a good possibility. She's not up to anything else near as I can tell, except killing assholes by animating their dragon-skin boots.

I doubt Greenwood gave the go-ahead on her death to begin with, but a lot of FR authors were pretty eagerly tossing gods onto the chopping block to get ready for 4E's nonsense. Seeing as how the drow as we know them are basically his creation, I doubt he was particularly pleased about another author getting WotC's permission to do that.

Eilistraee's death was a cheap and stupid one and served no purpose other than to make a divide between drow and "dark elves" so 4E could nicely categorize the two. Drow as per the norm, and wood-elf-flavored dark elves.

Summary: WoW's not!drow are having a civil war because the ruling section decided to bend knee to the Burning Legion rather than be destroyed, seeing as how the Horde and Alliance got their shit pushed in on the Broken Shore (both the High King and Warchief were killed, along with a sizable chunk of their forces and the Argent Crusade). A group called the Dusk Lotus tries to defy them and promptly got its ass kicked. All the ones that weren't killed were exiled, essentially a death sentence outside the city.

You, being the big swingin' dick hero that you are, show up and help the exiled Nightborne (the Nightfallen) establish a place of security and power so they don't succumb to their magic addiction and become mindless Withered (i.e. like the blood elves' Wretched back in Burning Crusade). Eventually, you find a cure.

The anon in question probably found it hellish because it involves a lot of grinding to actually finish the storyline, because unlike every other zone in Legion it requires you to be Exalted with the representative faction to do so.

I thought it was fine, personally. They dropped the ball elsewhere but Suramar was nice.

The nobles probably won't ruin their blood with the common stock, and the common plebeians are probably forced into marriages and couplings to ensure good, strong, obedient children.
While the noble houses all hate eachother, and while interbreeding between houses could bring a political boon to one or both, most of them would be too proud or hateful or suspicious to do so, meaning breeding in their own family/house much more likely, as it is for commoners as the same family is likely to share the same sought after traits

I want to include drow in my setting. Or dark elves, at any rate- but I can't come up with a reason for their appearance to so vastly differ from the norm of most elves, and there are already subterranean elves that are pallid and dark-haired.

the explanation I'm using in my setting is that the drow, the only elf race of the setting, are descended of deep dragon (themselves descended of black/blue hybrid dragons)/human hybrids, as a bid for the black dragons to keep themselves and their culture from going extinct, hence the black skin. They do anyway, when the drow, dragonless, are converted to lolth worship, but upon the advent of the true gods, and lolth's absence from their ranks, drow culture's been going through a bit of a revolution by the time the game picks up.
On the dragon side of things, only blue, brown and red dragons remain and thrive in the setting.

Reminds me of the lore behind the now defunct EverQuest Next version of Dark Elves, who had small horns as a result of it as well.

For some reason I hadn't considered a possible ancient crossbreed.

Elves in my setting are largely defined by their environs, bound to one of several blessed tree of life that keep them ageless and healthy for hundreds of years. When the tree is killed or they're cut off from its power somehow, they deteriorate and die.

Idea 1: A group of elves made/were trapped in a magical pocket dimension for thousands of years and forced to find a way to create an arcane alternative to their natural bond to the world to keep from just dying out.
Idea 2: Same premise but in a more shadowy realm, hence the very dark skin. Possible pact with Shadow-Demon Lord for an alternative to keep them alive.
Idea 3: Something closer to what you're doing, with a powerful, ancient lineage (such as a dragon or something otherworldly) "corrupting" their bloodline in a sense.
