When you're one of the most powerful wizards in the world, you would probably want to look old & wrinkly to garner the respect you damn well deserve. Instead of going IT WAS ALL A RUSE HUEHEUHUEHEUHEUE he should have made it so the real baker and his daughter were kidnapped just after he left after punching the baker's lights out, and the BBEG then went after the PC while illusioned. Serves as a nice twist and a gut punch while simultaneously not completely undoing presumably months of character development, and gives the character a goal to work for (rescuing the baker and his daughter from the BBEG).

In The Witcher, they have an explanation for it.

Typically the women who are gifted with magical abilities/trained are those who had major defects before they were taken away for training. (Yennefer was a hunch back.)

After training they can hide and/or get rid of those defects and have a massive yearning to be beautiful because of how they were treated before.

They are also typically advisors, and use their sexuality to help in their schemes.

Well, the world-ending fireballs part is itself rare in any sort of medium. Video games and tabletop games are really the only places where spellcasters casually and frequently throw flashy magic around. Most films and literature use the kind of magic that requires lengthy preparation and rituals and does things that aren't immediately obvious, and wizards themselves tend to be there as either a deux ex machina or some kind of guide for the sword-swinging hero.

Also, an old man is traditionally seen as wise while a younger one is seen as rash and foolhardy. This is why certain cultures had age requirements for offices. To look the part of a powerful male wizard you should appear to be a person of great wisdom who have had enough time in his life to study the vast wells of knowledge availible to him. Looking old and weak also have the added advantage of people not considering you as much of a threat which can come in handy.

In contrast a good looking young women is at the hight of her power as she can use her womanly ways to influence the men around her. There's a reason Cleopatra is traditionally thought of as beautiful even though the primary sources suggest otherwise. A prudent, powerhungry sorceress would thus spend time and effort on trying to look (young and) as beautiful as possible to increase her personal power.

In other words: Male magic-wielders look old to signal wisdom and to not appear threatening while female magic-wielders look young and gorgeous to enhance their personal power and influence.

In a matriarchal society I don't doubt that we would find plenty of male-wizards who'd take the traditionally female approach of maximising their attractiveness.

So imagine for a moment a world without technology. There is no internet, the world is as it was before that time. Nerds are hated and reviled, made from the castoffs of society and those fascinated with knowledge. But without exception the world worships martial classes and looks down on nerds. As such, you're not expected to be attractive and trying is generally slapped down unless you're exceptional.

Now imagine for a moment the wizard. Scrying pools and other spells allow for long distance communication, just like the internet does. Wizards are able to talk to people! But you don't want people to see your regular ugly mug online, just as you wouldn't in a scrying pool. You add a few little glamors, illusions, maybe even use a transformation spell to even out any unsightly features like acne. Suddenly you have the cheat codes to hotness and peers that are interested in the same thing you are.

Men want to stop being skinny geeks and be respected. They want that aged distinguished look, but they'll be damned if they've got the muscles because they hate the guys that have them. Alternatively they really want to look cool and buy far too many belts and far too few shirts.

Women wizards have always been made to feel ugly and unwanted because they rejected a traditional life as a pigfarmers bride. They want to be so hot it turns those girls they grew up with in the village into weeping wrecks when they're seen.

In both cases they want to be so awesome or sexy or distinguished that the people that spent their entire lives looking down on them pay.

Imagine an anime con. A group of nerds congregating together and only judging each other. Now imagine the people in it have magic cheat codes to being hot, unlike real life. Suddenly you have a ton of legitimately hot and smart people running around together with no sense of right or wrong wearing next to nothing.

Wizards guilds are like the ultimate hookup con. Everyone is a nerd looking to get laid.
