But in terms of how to approach the books, the best way is to go chronologically.
Problem is that everything was written out of order so the books tend to suffer from retroactive continuity. They're still very enjoyable and easy to digest.

I enjoy the purple prose alot and i think that while the exclusions of the Pulsing Cavern, Rakhir and Ameeron were necessary for pacing issues, i still miss them. But on the other hand, the comic fixes alot of the problems the book had.

Its neat to see someone's interpretations of the books. There's some stuff less like I imagined it, some things pretty spot on, some things obviously updated audience wise. It felt very contemporary dark fantasy. Mixed feelings on that. Interesting to see, but don't like it as much as the hyperbolic pulp stuff.

Its less intense in a weird way I can't quite figure out. The excesses of melnibone as mostly sexy times makes them less alien and otherworldly? Like I had imagined their strange excesses being more different than just doing a bald woman from behind while a guy gets killed in a corner. You can take it as comentary on how they set themselves apart but are just like humans though. Not sure if that was the intention. Wasn't super into the foreshadowing of Elric destroying his people just being flat out said by Strasha.

Cool looking monsters, hoping for more of that. The boats, maze and architecture are spectacular in a way I didn't expect and enjoy. Fun little touches like the adviser who betrayed elric throwing himself off the ledge.

Makes sense as a way to visually convey the cruel, alien nature of the Melniboneans.

So I've always pronounced "Melniboné" with an accent on the second and last syllables (mel-NI-bo-NAY) since that's what it looks like from the acute accent on the e, but I hear a lot of people pronouncing it with the accent on the penultimate syllable (MEL-ni-BO-nay).

I think the former way is the way Hawkwind pronounces it, whereas the latter way is the way Moorecock himself pronounces it -- I would argue that he is wrong in the same way that the creators of the .gif file format are wrong to pronounce it like the peanut butter brand.

Their races were once people called the Eldren that got separated while traveling the multiverse.
They landed on Melnibone, migrated to other countries and made pacts with Chaos and more importantly, with dragons.
That allowed them to interbreed. So whenever a dragon lays an egg, it's got a 50/50 chance of the egg having a Melnibonean instead. Elric's mom was apparently one of them. He meets his aunt in Red Pearls who has the ability to transform into a dragon herself.

Having no experience with Moorecock's work myself, I feel like the narrative style of this story is very Homerian. You have a tragic hero who goes against the social norms of his (quite violent) society, and the reactions of the people around him reflecting that society. You have soliloquies (although that's a feature of comics in general) and interactions with gods and godlike beings surrounding a story of familial betrayal. You have the characters making decisions that don't, by our standards, quite make sense and suffering the consequences because of it. And of course, you have a classical anti-hero.

I don't know how well the books do it, but this comic seems to do a good job of making it seem like Elric's destiny really does suck, no matter how badass or metal it might seem on the surface -- which is something edge sue fanfiction never even tries to get right, because that would ruin the fantasy.

I would call elric a sue for the reasons I've pointed out, precisely because, unlike Guts, Elric's misery porn is all at the expense of storytelling, efficient drama and consistent characterization. Moorcock really rushes through everything that would make the drama have weight, and makes his characters do admittedly stupid shit so he can instead focus on lengthy descriptions of how sad and introspective and beautiful and fragile and emotional Elric is. In Berserk, there's a slow and progressive buildup that leads to Guts getting completely fucked up in a way that feels really heavy.

See, having read everything pertaining to the main saga(still gotta go through Moonbeam Roads and Von Bek) i can't agree with this.
The only time where i ever felt this was the case was with the beginning of Sailor on the Seas of Fate which feels forced and Portrait in Ivory which is nothing BUT Elric wanking.
In stories like Fortress of the Pearl, he's mostly just pissed off.

Yeah, the original Elric series was knocked out at the speed of light, with Moorcock just making it up as he went along. The later Elric novels (The Dreamthief's Daughter etc) were much more thoughtful and nuanced.

He didn't need to be passive about Yyrkoon.
He didn't need to escalate the situation to the point where Stormbringer and Mournblade where fetched.
He could have bothered to learn magic before basically exiling himself from his kingdom.
He keeps letting Stormbringer have its will, even when he wants to have honorable duels, and borrows duel weapons.
The irony is that The Finale of Elric is only set in motion because he made all the bad decisions that allowed it to happen.

One of the few good decisions he makes, is to bother to steal back a ring that was stolen from him.
