It is 96 years since the Crossbarry Ambush, one of the largest engagements of the Irish War of Independence. It took place at the rural crossroads of Crossbarry in County Cork, about 20 km south-west of Cork city. About a hundred Irish Republican Army (IRA) volunteers escaped an attempt by more than 1,300 British troops to encircle them. During the hour-long battle, between 10 and 40 British troops and three to six IRA volunteers were killed. The ambush is one of the few rare large battles during the war where the British forces, rather than the IRA, initiated the engagement.

The increasing success of the IRA's 3rd Cork Brigade had led to a spate of arrests and interrogations of suspected IRA volunteers in West Cork, in an effort to discover the identities and headquarters of the guerrillas. At this point the column had a total of 104 volunteers. On 15 February 1921, the IRA mounted an abortive ambush of a troop train at Upton, in which six civilians and three IRA volunteers died. Several other volunteers were captured. The British succeeded in breaking an IRA volunteer under interrogation and discovered that the West Cork Brigade had its headquarters in Ballymurphy.

The British commanders thus planned a major operation to capture the IRA column, mobilising about 1,200 troops, to converge on the area from several different directions. 400 British troops came from Cork, 200 from Ballincollig, 300 from Kinsale and 350 from Bandon.[2] Later in the day about 120 Auxiliaries also left Macroom. The British sweep was mounted early on the morning of 19 March. At Crossbarry, some of the troops descended from their lorries to proceed on foot or bicycle to try and catch the IRA unawares. One early victim of the action was Charlie Hurley, the IRA Commanding Officer of the Cork Number Three Brigade. Hurley, who was recovering from a serious wound sustained at the Upton ambush, was trapped in a house and killed at about 6:30am.

Brigade CO Tom Barry, only becoming aware of the danger at the last minute, resolved that his men, 104 strong, would have to fight their way out of the encirclement. Barry's calculation was that his men could not sustain an all day fight, which they could expect if they retired before the British. Moreover, the likelihood was that the small column would be trapped if it took this course of action. However, Barry observed that one of the British columns advancing towards Crossbarry was well ahead of the other British units. If his men could break through this British force, roughly the same strength as his own force, then they could break out of the British encirclement.

Barry laid out an ambush for the British at Crossbarry cross roads—his men being in position by 5:30 am. The first British lorries, about 12 vehicles according to Barry's account, came into view of the IRA at 8:00 am. When they reached Crossbarry, they were caught by surprise and hit by a crossfire at very close range—between 5 yards (4.6 m) and 10 yards (9.1 m). They took significant casualties and many of them fled the scene. Barry's men collected the British arms and ammunition before setting fire to the lorries. At this point, they were attacked again by another British column of about 200, coming from the southwest, but they too retreated after a stiff fire fight. Two more British units converging on the area from the southeast tried to dislodge the IRA from their ambush position, but again without success and they too fled in disorder.

Taking the chance offered by his quick victory to get away, Barry then marched his men to safety in the Gurranereigh area, while the British were still disoriented by the ambush. There was another brief exchange of fire at long range as the IRA column got away. The action had lasted for under an hour.

On realising what had happened, Major Percival of the Essex Regiment rushed to the scene with his troops, but was only able to open a long range fire on the fleeing IRA men. He later blamed the failure of the British operation on the Auxiliary column which had gone to the wrong rendezvous point and had therefore left a gap in the encirclement. Barry's account does not mention the use of the explosives, but contemporary press accounts reported that the three British lorries were destroyed by a mine planted under the bridge at Crossbarry and detonated as they passed.

The reports of casualties inflicted in the ambush varied according to the source that reported them. Barry reported that three of his men were killed in the fight and another three wounded.] British accounts claimed that six IRA men had died. The IRA claimed that over 30 British soldiers were killed in the action. The British stated their losses were 10 killed and three wounded. The RIC memorial records that one RIC constable and six soldiers were killed. According to historian Peter Hart, the figure of 10 Crown forces personnel killed and four wounded, was "given in internal police and military documents and verified at the inquest".

Historian Michael Hopkinson concludes of the action, "With considerable justice, Crossbarry is regarded as victory for the IRA, but can also be seen as a missed opportunity for the British". The British commander, Arthur Percival, as General Percival would surrender Singapore to the Japanese in 1942.

This is definitely something for fans of small interwar actions. Played on a large enough scale it could even make a mini-campaign game as the British player tries to complete the encirclement that failed historically.

So, I'm interested in getting into historicals, but I'm looking for games that maybe try for irregular warfare. Parisians versus occupying Germans, Confederare Raiders against militia or encamped Union regulars, stuff like that. Any good rulesets or scales for me to look at?

Force on Force for post WW2 asymmetrical skirmish. The book's organization is kind of a mess but you might take a look. It's in the OP folder. I don't play ACW but you could probably work up something like you describe using some of the Too Fat Lardies rules like Sharp Practice.

I've never understood basing single tanks from a modeling perspective. I mean if you're playing high enough level that they're squadrons and you base squadrons okay. But if your representing with single figs it really feels redundant. Of course autistically written rules have an autism factor or compliance.

Most wargames include some kind of irregular force(s) as an army list or option. For example a lot of WW2 games have partisan/resistance lists, and modern stuff like Force on Force has the Taliban, etc. For ACW guerillas you could look at Two Fat Lardies' Terrible Sharp Sword.

For the most part skirmish scale will be the thing here, so you're looking at 1:72/20mm/28mm. Skirmish just does the best job of catching the feel of irregular warfare. You could probably have company/battalion size clashes too, based on stuff like the German anti-partisan ops in WW2. The battle described in the OP is a good example of something like that.

My current status for the "obsolete"-group build.

I tried my best with the arabic freehand but it still looks terrible. (I wrote a simple "Assad" when in reality they used names of fallen soldiers, and those were super long and complicated to write but i think Assad works for both its meanings, Lion and the name of their president). I'll probably do it again to get a better result.

I also still haven't finally decided if i want to add a soviet hmg from a Dust48 tank onto the turret or not.

What are some decent medieval skirmishers? I've found the rules for Chevauchee in the OP. How does it compare to other games with maybe 3-10 minis per side?

I kinda want to have some objective driven, narrative games with my knights. Maybe a longer campaign or something.

Was it a GHQ one?
>>
>>52255467

For example, at the beginning of WW1:
Cargoships had a top speed of about 12 to 15 knots,
Battleships had a top speed of about 18 to 21 knots,
Cruisers had a top speed of about 21 to 27 knots,
and Destroyers had a top speed of about 30 to 33 knots.

Again, these are just average figures - there are a few ships outside this average (Queen Elizabeth's 24 knots comes to mind) - but, for the most part, these are the ballpark values.

>If you check the preview, you can see the revised movement there.

Some revision.

Dreadnoughts at the same speed as cargo ships, battleships move faster than drreadnoughts, and battlecruisers have the same speed as destroyers. That's just the movement rules too. Imagine what other nonsense the rules must contain.

"Pay What You Want" or not, shit is shit even if you get it for free.

So my copy of The Arab-Israeli wars arrived and I played a match with my dad. Now I understand that maybe it's just a historical thing but is the game meant to be balanced in Israeli forces favor? Granted it makes some sense from a historical perspective (given that they did in fact win all those wars) but it seems a bit odd for the gameplay. It seems that unless you're playing as Jordan (which gives you British tanks that can hit-and-run) you basically have to play super defensively as the Arab forces... which seems counter-intuitive considering the Israelis were on the defensive for most of these conflicts. Am I just doing it wrong? Is my dad's 40-year-old knowledge of the game simply resurfacing and kicking my novice ass?

I have no idea what the game you refer to is but the game may just not be balanced given it's based on a war in which the quality vs quantity balance was hugely in favour of one side, especially given the quantity sides had huge lack of quality issues to go with it.

That kind of conflict has always been a very hard one to balance even remotely for game purposes. Especially when running a direct hardware comparison in tactical gameplay rather than perhaps a strategic overview where individual unit capability matters far less than say the logistics of keeping troops supplied enough to fight in the first place.

some of the scenarios in there are a touch out of balance when it comes to victory conditions (Bir Gafgafa im looking at you), but the Arab forces do have a shot at winning most scenarios. really have to just overwhelm the Israelis with numbers in most scenarios. use and abuse your Saggers as much as you can in the scenarios that you have them. get up and in the face of the Isreali forces. dont try and sit at range and gun duel them-youll lose.

im going to guess its just your old man using a bit of his old knowledge to give him an edge against your noviceness.

Does /hwg/ have recommendations for books on the Thirty Years War for someone who knows nothing about it.

I keep seeing it mentioned and it seems interesting.
>>
>>52278386
If you're looking for novels too, I'd recommend With Fire and Sword and The Deluge and the third one I don't know the English name of.

Other than that, some Anon recommended a good book about it some time ago but not sure what was it called. It's a really fascinating war and from a wargaming persepctive it's much more interesting than the ECW IMHO, mostly for the diverse nature of the forces involved.
>>

> The Thirty Years War by Geoffrey Parker
> The Count-Duke of Olivares by J.H. Elliot
> The Military Revolution: Military Innovation and the Rise of the West 1500-1800 by Geoffrey Parker
> The Army of Flanders and the Spanish Road 1567-1659 also by Geoffrey Parker

There's a couple more but they're in Spanish which I assume isn't suitable.

I really enjoyed Battles in Germany 1631‑1704 by George Bruce Malleson. From the late 1800s, yet still one of the best books you can get on the actual fighting that took place rather than endless politics.
Lacks maps, but having one to hand isn't exactly hard. Written in a style that's like an enthusiastic history teacher. Despite lamenting the 'bigoted Catholics' that started the war, it's also very well balanced in that the author commends and celebrates incredible skill and heroism from all parties whilst lamenting the traitors and idiots no matter their side. Also engages in surprisingly passable scholarship in that the author sources from multiple accounts, and makes note of disparities, using good sense and the collected information to try and get to a more correct information where there's outright contradiction, like where sources claim that X person was at Y place where they were last noted to be somewhere else and the travel time involved wouldn't allow for it and so on.

Covers a great variety of battles, including a lot of stuff after the initial big guys of Gustav Adolphus, Wallenstein and Tilly have all croaked, which is fascinating stuff when the war really got to that stage of dregs of armies compared to the masses that once took to the field, yet no less interesting and repeatedly decisive in their own ways.

But afaik ww2 is not really popular for rpgs. neither pen & paper nor pc games.

You can always play your own "rpg-lite" games and campagins with skirmish wargaming rules.
5 men in kursk, nuts!, or chain of command would work pretty good with some tweaks.

You also could check out "V Commandos", a coop boardgame set in WW2 which also offers a good core to use for a rpg campaign.

How many pages is too many for a book that bills itself as the one-stop reference for WW2 wargamers? I have autism and theoretically could go into multiple volumes on this project.
>>
>>52297488
If it's a ONE STOP reference then as many pages as needed? The problem is you'll have a rather broad set of prospective readers with the term 'wargamer' some will want very different things, from merely an overview of uniforms to in depth unit histories and actions. A better bet I feel would be to focus on a specific thing for the moment, a front or nation or uniforms whatever and go from there.
>>
>>52297534
This is the kind of feedback I need. I've done lots of writing, a tiny bit of it published, but largely under university auspices. This is my first solo venture. I was thinking of cutting it down to just the Eastern Front since it seems like that's less easy to just google like a lazy fuck. I have access to a library's worth of reference material.
>>
>>52297618
Ok that's good but JUST the Eastern Front is still a massive undertaking. To begin with what specically about the Eastern Front? What do you think is lacking from other histories etc that you can help with?
>>
>>52297698
Alright, let me write it out roughly the way I would to a publishing company:

This work is intended to be a comprehensive reference for wargamers interest in the Eastern Front. It would focus on issues that gamers would be interested in, such as
>What were uniforms like/how do I paint my armies for each nation? Who used camouflage and where?
>how did each military approach the problem of warfare? how were they different? an attempt to cover as many scales as possible, from divisions down to squads
>a comparative look at equipment--not only what they used, but how (did it live up to expectations? strange quirks etc)
>famous or simply interesting battles and how to portray them, or parts of them, at various unit levels
>scenario ideas
>maps all over the place
>unit compositions through time--not just the tables, but an attempt to explain why they changed and how real-life units tended to deviate from the official listings
>oddities--one-off conversions, Minor Axis shenanigans, amazing feats by soldiers that may inspire your next project (example: the Tiger that was disabled by 114 anti-tank rifle hits over the course of a skirmish)
I have a personal reference library on this subject well over 150 books strong and will probably read another 50+ in the process of writing this book. The goal is to condense information from all over the place and present it in a way anyone can understand, no matter how new they are to the topic. Certain sections, particularly at the start, will be marked as targeted at beginners to tabletop gaming especially.

Honestly, you may want to structure it something like that. Books/volumes/metachapters about certain gaming-relevant historical context - Part 1: Equipment, Part 2: Doctrine, Part 3: Battles/Scenarios, etc..

Consider that you'd basically be condensing the Osprey library into one encyclopedic work. It may be worth it to compare with how they break up their publications and organize along similar lines if it's a logical structure.

Perhaps consider some smaller sub-conflict as a testbed, such as the Winter War or the Burmese campaign. Then move to a larger scope once you know what works.

I'd certainly put them at the top of the list, as you'd be targeting much of their core audience but on the other hand you may be competing with themselves since they publish all sorts of uniform guides and unit guides... however they're still top of the list to actually give you an offer. But there's definitely others who might publish it.

Call of Cthulhu is pretty much the perfect WW1 RPG. For WW2 you have the aforementioned GURPS, Achtung Cthulhu and Behind Enemy Lines. There's also a few indie titles like Night Witches and Grey Ranks too. Phoenix Command has rules for WW2 weapons and tanks, so it could be used as a simulation In fact any military RPG (like Recon, FGU's Merc, or Twilight 2000) could be used for the world wars, with a bit of tweaking.

If any anons are interested in a particular title I think I have most of the links. Here's my GURPS WW2 folder anyway, because regardless of your views on the system GURPS books are always well-researched and making useful gaming tools.

No problem. Same goes for Cavalry. It's a small change, but improved the minis drastically, older Strelets minis have terrible heads and faces. I'm doing the same with their crossbowmen, using the old Accurate/Revell kit as a head donor.

Sadly there aren't really any 1:72 late British infantry set. The Emhar ones offers very little in terms of poses, the HaT Canadians are hard to get and rather ugly (plus I have the HaT heavy weapon set, so no need for that much extra shit)...I was thinking of getting the Emhar US kit for extra figures, but for systems like Warhammer Great War I might need those extras for the HaT box as well, so eh...another plan is to get the HaT early war set, and give them steel helmets from somewhere (probably from Airfix's 8th Army set). Wish HaT would stop fucking around with the Belgian cyclists and complete some of their ranges - lots of standard infantry without heavy weapons (early Germans, Brits) and vica versa (late British heavy weapons, WW2 British heavy weapons).

Could the same result be achieved by just painting the plastic miniatures with a dark skintone?

Hi Guys,

I kindley requesting some PDFs. Would be nice if somebody can help me:

1. "Special Forces in the War on Terror" from Osprey Publishing
https://ospreypublishing.com/special-forces-in-the-war-on-terror

2. Still missing Force on Force Supplements (Osprey Version):
FOF COMP 3 - Ambush Valley - Vietnam 1965-1975
FOF COMP 6 - Bush Wars - Africa 1967-2010
FOF COMP 7 - Fallujah - Iraq 2004
FOF COMP 8 - Classified - Special Operations Missions 1940-2010

The other 4 Books I have already found in the modern folder in OP. The Ambush Valley book from the Vietnam folder belong to the old Ambush Alley ruleset. I search for the Osprey version.

3. Line of Fire Magazine (Lock'n' Load Publishing)
I request the Line of Fire Magazine (LoF) from Lock'n'Load Publishing (LnL) as PDFs.

So i got a Churchill as a gift from a friend who dragged me into BA recently as brits. And altough i have painted many Shermans and 40k tanks before I know brit armour used diffrent colours a bit. What would be the best paints to paint the Hull+Tracks with? Vallejo or GW paints would be peffered.

I just used the same Olive Drab as with other British vehicles (see: >>52253619 ). As stated, when fresh, they were similar to US OD, but when faded, was more greener.

Plastic Firelocks arrived today.

I really like them so far, and I'll probably mix in some of the advancing musketeers from the standard infantry box. The two metal command minis are really awesome. I have to check if Warlord sells them separately, which would be nice if they did, as I use the GW WotR trays with 8 minis on it, so this box would give me two units, enough for two armies as one unit per army is allowed.

>>52329090
If it's anything like Sharp Practice or Mud & Blood, you have a deck of cards containing one card for each officer (big man) on both sides as well as stuff like cards for random events, hidden troops etc.

You draw a card from the deck and that determines what happens

> If it's a big man's card, he can give orders to whatever troops he's leading
> If it's an event then whatever the event is occurs (this is scenario-specific)
> A 'blinds' card lets all hidden troops on whatever side the card belongs to make their move
> A turn end card (for instance the 'Time for a snifter' card in Mud & Blood) causes all cards to be reshuffled into the deck and signals the start of a new 'turn'
>>
>>52329090

You put activation cards for various units/events (such as reinforcements arriving) in a deck along with an End Turn card. You keep drawing cards and activating that unit/event until you hit the End Turn card, then you do the end of turn cleanup, add drawn cards back into the deck, reshuffle, and start the next turn.

No, fuck prone bodies. They are a waste of sprue. You want a weapon team? Go buy a weapon team. I'm really fucking tired of not being able to use every fifth or sixth mini per sprue because it's prone.

>Also, have fun with prone minis and TLoS.

>>
>>52345662
>Have fun with your WAAC opponents.
What the fuck is the correlation between the two?

Also yeah, why would be a weapon team you need one or two of on a sprue of 5 men anyway? Sure, take space away from two rifles so you can't arm all of them with the most common infantry weapon, but you need a fucking medium machine gun or whatever per sprue so you'll have fifteen of them after yu've built 1-2 platoons.
>>
>>52345708
>What the fuck is the correlation between the two?

Normal players won't start anything troublesome if bodies are prone and it comes to line of sight.

I never had this "problem".

Most of the less 'gamey' rulesets do not use TLoS because it's fucking awful and leads to some people being cunts.

God, I love wikipedia - seeing the 'reversal of history' I immediatelly went on it to check what you were talking about.

Yeah - this is one of the weak points of DBA: all armies are presented as equal in size - when (usually) they obviously weren't.

Like the battle just now: if I understand correctly, it's based on Achaemenid conquest of Egypt - which they managed by having twice as many troops as Egyptians.

But you didn't have twice as many troops here.

Thanks for the report! I always thought ancients were nifty, but never have given them much thought as to actually playing them.

How do these armies sound? (based on very cursory knowledge/research)

Kalmar-Danish
2 Knights
1 Cavalry
1 Light Horse
1 Crossbow
3 Blades (Halberds)
2 Pikes
1 Psiloi
all infantry units in this army being represented by Landsknechts.

Swedish Rebels
1 Knight
5 Warband (enraged peasants)
2 Auxiliaries (more peasants)
1 Fast Blade (Axemen)
3 Blades (Swedish Halberd Infantry)

No problem. Wouldn't call it much of a report but I'm glad you liked it. You should give ancients a go some time, lots of fun.

For a uni course I need to give a demonstration speech and I was hoping to teach and demonstrate a basic wargame. Because it's nation focused I decided to reference the UK wargaming tradition, but I'm not sure what would be a good, quick scenario to run.

Its either this or Kazakhstan and nuclear bomb decommissioning and I'd rather have an excuse to use all my D6s.

Phantoms are sexy. If Vietnam hadn't ended sooner, my dad would've more than likely wound up as second seat on one, and I might not be here. So yeah.

They are absolutely the most sexy airframe ever put into service in the US, right behind the B-1B.

I've tried, but I can't seem to find them on their news/blog section. I would have checked studio tomahawk's site too but it's under construction.
