So after a couple boring U-boat games not worth posting I’ve just had another lucky break. Here’s USS Sturgeon.

December 41: Philippines

Sturgeon was on patrol when the war started.

On December 21, she encountered the armed merchant Gokoku Maru (10400). She fired four torpedoes. All hit, all duds. She was then driven off by aircraft, although she was not damaged.

On December 23, she encountered the freighter Tatsumomu Maru (900) with escort. She fired four torps. All hit, two exploded. Sturgeon was not detected by the escorts.

On December 25, she encountered BB Nagato. Closing undetected, she fired four torpedoes at her. Although two were duds, the other two hit her magazine, sending her sky high (one crit, one rolled max damage)

During transit to Australia she was attacked by aircraft, but dove in time.

LCDR Anon received the Navy Cross for his actions.
>>
>>52228014
February 42: Java Sea.

Transit was uneventful.

On 12 February, Sturgeon encountered a convoy. She snuck in and fired four torps at Sagami Maru (7200). Three hit, all were duds. Sturgeon escaped successfully and returned the following night, repeating the same tactic. This time, two exploded, sinking her. Sturgeon returned again to target the Nekka Maru (6800), and three torpedoes exploded and sunk her. On 15 February, Sturgeon returned a final time to attack the armed merchant Kamogawa Maru, sinking her with the one torpedo that hit and exploded. However, the escorts detected her and attacked, injuring part of the crew and disabling half her forward torpedo doors.

On 17 February, Sturgeon encountered the Anyo Maru (9300) with escort. She fired four torps, three of which missed and the last was a dud. Sturgeon escaped undetected, but lost contact.

On 19 February, the Pharmacist’s Mate treated a case of appendicitis, becoming more skilled.

On 23 February, Sturgeon encountered the Koan Maru (3200) with escorts. She fired four torps, three of which hit and two of which were duds, but still sunk her. Sturgeon got away safe.

Her transit home was uneventful. LCDR Anon received the Silver Star.
>>
>>52228038
April 42: Solomons

Transit was uneventful

On 14 April, encountered Keizan Maru (2900) with escorts. Sturgeon fired four torps, with three hitting but all were duds. The escorts spotted her, and attacked, destroying the AA gun.

On 23 April, she encountered the minelayer Tsugaru with escorts. She fired four torps. Three hit, but two were duds. However, Sturgeon escaped undetected to strike again the following night, where she hit with two (one dud) and sunk Tsugaru, before escaping undetected again.

Transit home was uneventful.

Sturgeon’s chief engineer had grown quite skilled.

June 42: Solomons

Transit was uneventful.

On 24 June, she encountered the Daizen Maru (5400) and Shinryu Maru (4900) with escorts. However, the escorts detected Sturgeon on approach and attacked. The initial barrage took out the dive planes and punctured the fuel tanks, later salvos damaged a diesel and the AA gun, as well as causing serious flooding. However, Sturgeon managed to make it out alive, although the dive plane and fuel tank damage was irreparable, forcing her to abort patrol.

Her transit home was uneventful.
>>
>>52228077
August 42: China Sea.

Transit was uneventful

On August 11, encountered Fukushu Maru (1500) alone and sunk with deck gun.

On August 13, encountered Ganges Maru (4400) and Thames Maru (5900) with escorts. She fired two torpedoes at each, and all hit, but the hits on Ganges Maru were both duds. She was then detected and attacked, causing hull damage and putting the deck gun out of action.

On August 15, she encountered Sana Maru (3400) alone and fired four torpedoes at her. All hit and three exploded, sinking her.

On August 18, she encountered a convoy. She snuck in and fired four torpedoes at the Toho Maru (4700). All hit, but three were duds. The single success sank her. However, she was then detected and attacked, the damage disabling many systems and flooding forced LCDR Anon to surface and scuttle Sturgeon. He was then taken as prisoner for the rest of the war.

Fucking dice got me. Started off with boxcars for escort detection, and never rolled under 9 after that. Still, it was a good run for Sturgeon. 11 ships for 77100 tons. Live fast, die hard, leave a good-looking wreck.

Shitbote time! This is U-60, a IIC.

September 39: British Isles

U-60 transited uneventfully.

On September 14, she encountered a small coastal vessel (1000 t) alone. She fired three torpedoes at it. All hit, but one was a dud.

Her transit home was uneventful.

November 39: British Isles

Transit was uneventful.

On November 13, she encountered another coastal vessel (800 t) alone. She fired two torpedoes, both hit and exploded.

During transit she dove to avoid air attack.

Jan 40: British Isles

Transit was uneventful

On Jan 12, she encountered the freighter Kumasian (5000 t) and fired three torpedoes at it. Only one hit, and failed to sink her, and U-60 was then sunk by aircraft when she attempted to make a second attack.

That was anticlimactic.

Now a IIA, U-1.

April 40- Norway. (IIAs in these rules roll on a chart for what patrol date they get, either a Sep 39, April 40, or both).

U-1's transit was uneventful.

Arriving on-station in Norway, on April 12 she stumbled across the CA Belfast. Closing the range she fired her three fore torpedoes at her, but two were duds, failing to sink her. She managed to escape undetected, and followed the damaged cruiser until the next night, when she attacked again. However, her last two torpedoes were both duds, and although she escaped safely U-1's crew were very disappointed.

Her transit home was uneventful.

Hey now, no need for S-boat hate. In Microprose's Silent Service II my S-boat was transiting between Java and Sumatra trying to make Australia after Manila fell and by some miracle SANK two IJN carriers!

It was one of those scary night surface encounters SS-II was so famous for. All of a sudden, I'm something like 800yds from two carriers and inside their DD screen. I fired all 4 forward tubes and crash dived. Apparently the shit torps of the period had a better if hitting at oblique angle so all four exploded and it was "Scratch two flattops" for the MoH.

Of course it was shit blind luck and an unforeseen glitch in the programming. I must have tried over 100 times to recreate that encounter all to no avail.

"Whatta Mistake-ah to make-ah": The Unfortunate Tale of Admiral Bertorelli and the Regia Marina's Carribbean Squadron

Home Station: The Carribbean Sea
>100,000 tonnes of enemy shipping operating in this area.

Flagship:
>Pugliese, a Regina Margherita-class Battleship
Attending Squadron:
>Bartolo Valentini, a Pisa-class Heavy Cruiser
>Bonifacio Amato, a Nino Bixio-class Light Cruiser
>Antonio Sultana, a Nino Bixio-class Light Cruiser
>Rossa Raneri, a Nino Bixio-class Light Cruiser
>Intrepido, a Indomito-class Destroyer

Squadron Logistics
>Supply Rating:3 (21 days before resupply.)

Mission 1: Reconaissance
Admiral Bertorelli's first outing of the war was a largely successful one. Sallying forth from his home base in British-controlled Dominica, he directed his squadron to shadow German warships moving from the neutral Caribbean out into the North Atlantic to menace British merchant shipping.

After some over-zealous maneuvering by his light cruisers, Bertorelli found himself committed in a close-range cruiser battle, occasionally punctuated by long-range exchanges of fire between the enemy flagships. After identifying all of the enemy squadron, at the cost of 2 cruisers and his only destroyer, Bertorelli headed back to Dominica to lick his wounds.

Mission Results:
>11,780 tonnes of enemy shipping sunk.
>Bonifacio Amato damaged: Out of Action for 3 days.
>Antonio Sultana damaged: Scratched Paintwork.
>Intrepido damaged: Out of Action for 10 days.

Campaign Event:
>Terrors from the Deep: Morale of the Bartolo Valentini reduced by 1.

Player Actions:
>Crew Rating of the Pugliese increased by 1 to 7.
>Intrepido's repair time reduced by 4 days.

Time advances by 4 days.
>88220 tonnes of enemy shipping operating in the Caribbean Sea.
>Bonifacio Amato back in action.
>Intrepido out of action for 2 days.
>>
>>52242419
Mission 2: Mine Clearance
British merchantmen report the deployment of a large-scale mine barrage by German cruisers across the straits between the islands of Haiti and Puerto Rico. The nearest Royal Navy squadron is raiding German shipping in the South Atlantic, so it falls to Admiral Bertorelli to clear the minefield.

While Bertorelli's squadron picks its way through the minefield, they are set upon by the minelayers, with the Derfflinger-class battlecruiser at the head of the squadron.

With his cruisers trapped in the middle of a minefield, Bertorelli lead a valiant charge against the Derfflinger and attending heavy cruisers with the Bartolo Valentini close behind.

After a brutal close-range knife fight, the Germans were driven off and the minefield cleared, at great cost to Bertorelli's already understrength squadron.

Mission Results:
>19,380 tonnes of enemy shipping sunk.
>Pugliese damaged: Out of Action for 6 days.
>Bonifacio Amato damaged: Crew Effectiveness reduced by 1.
>Rossa Raneri routed: Morale reduced by 1.

Campaign Event:
>Rats!: Intrepido's supply rating reduced by 1.

Player Actions:
>Pugliese's repair time reduced by 6 days.
>Morale of the Rossa Raneri increased by 1.

Time Advances by 3 days.
>68,840 of enemy shipping operating in the area.
>Pugliese back in action.
>Intrepido back in action.
>14 days until resupply.

Last round of combat for my group:
Repairs are hurriedly carried out aboard the Bandai and Beowolf, with pipes being secured and compartments sealed, restoring a limited amount of flotation to the vessels as their pumps work overtime.

The Oberon and Inflexible fire at each other, neither vessel landing hits as the minutes draw by. The secondaries on the Oberon do manage to hit the Southampton however, although only causing superficial damage. The Revenge's main guns continue firing on the Oberon, but her gunnery continues to be off, and one of her aft turrets stops firing for a few minutes, the result of a jam most likely. The secondary battery does not have the same luck, and begins scoring hits on the Merda as she crosses by parallel to the Revenge. The six inch shells strike the Pensacola and knock out one of the secondary mounts amidships, starting a fire as some ammunition goes up in flames. More six inch shells rain down on the Merda as the Southampton joins in with her battery of 12 guns, and the north/central shore battery hits as well, causing significant structural damage to the cruiser.

Tortora's group responds, striking the Southampton with heavier 8 inch fire, but not finding any critical locations. The remaining secondary guns and destroyers do manage to silence the western battery on the Island in the channel, working over the dug in position with over a hundred rounds. Within minutes the battery stops firing.

The Revenge is rocked by several hits as the Skolopendra manages to bracket it. A large explosion occurs on the starboard side as two shells destroy several casemated six inch guns and the Revenge's two 4 inch AA mounts. Shrapnel from the hits blows out the Revenge's searchlights as well. Another shell strikes the conning tower of the Revenge, but the heavy armour shrugs off the mighty blow.
1/2
>>
Three torpedoes race past the Oberon, but there is not enough time to warn the Skolopendra. Half a minute later a plume of water explodes upwards alongside the Salamis class, as one of the fish strikes her on the broadside, causing minor flooding belowdecks.

In the north, the Beowolf's main battery straddles the Kent, causing significant structural damage to the vessel, and knocking out her port torpedo launcher. The resulting explosion blows out part of the upper decks of the cruiser, causing severe casualties among her available crew. The seocndaries also add to the damage as they race in. The Kent returns fire, but her secondary mounts fail to strike the Beowolf. The main eight inch guns do hit, with one shell bouncing off the armour on one of the secondary turrets on the battleship. Another torpedo explodes against the hull of the Beowolf, but other then light flooding, does no additional damage.

The destroyers in the north fire on each other, with the Birjit Kraft scoring hits, and the Lejon taking fire from the British group. The Kent shudders as two torpedoes hit her, and smoke pours from her engine room yet she remains afloat

---
Basically, we didn't have a great round, but we gave better then we got. Our mission objective is to sink the revenge.

I'm not running it. Our GM runs it, and the ruleset is a custom mish-mash of a few different ones. Campaign rules (economy) is entirely homebrewed. While the rules would allow for historical encounters, the home brew economy system makes it more of an alt-world RPG, which is what most of us like. It is why we are sailing in ships that sailed in different time periods, and with different nations.

K Class had that bow to try and correct the suicidal diving tendencies the ship had. Slowed the rate of pitch/descent, and helped cut waves when steaming at fleet speed on the surface.

K Boats are probably the worst british subs anyway. If you look at the british Sub Force through WW2, they were damned impressive.

>>
>>52257833

Nice piece of counter-espionage by Kaiser Bill and the boys. Through judicious leaks, Germany convinced the UK it was building something similar so the UK wasted time & money developing their own version.

Even worse was the K-class. Before the war, Germany dropped hints about having subs which could keep up with her surface fleet. As with the later M-1, the UK began it's own project to develop subs with battle fleet surface speeds. The initial diesel design couldn't reach the necessary speed, so the UK began designing the STEAM DRIVEN K-class. Complete waster of time & money, I think they built more than 12 of the things.

>>52258114
>Complete waster of time & money, I think they built more than 12 of the things.

Submarines were in their infancy, having fast subs wasn't a bad thing to try. And they did make 23~24 knots, so they could keep up with the battle fleet (QEs etc) with no problem. From a technical achievement point, that's damn impressive. I don't think any other nation ever had faster subs in both Wars. (Submerged speed was another matter of course, but everyone was slow in WW1)

The class found favour with Commodore Roger Keyes, then Inspector Captain of Submarines, and with Admirals Sir John Jellicoe and Sir David Beatty, respectively Commander-in-Chief British Grand Fleet and Commander-in-Chief Battlecruiser Squadrons.

Despite this, an early opponent of the class was Admiral Jacky Fisher, later First Sea Lord, who on the class' suggestion in 1913 had responded 'The most fatal error imaginable would be to put steam engines in submarines.'

In defence of the design it must be said that submarine technology was still in its infancy, that development was still at a similar early stage, and that the use of weapon (or tactics) requires at least as much thought and practical trial as the first two. Of course with hindsight the initial concept of a submarine (which we see today as a stealth weapon) maneuvering within the confines of a surface warship formation is at best a risky proposition; to a surface warship of today, a submarine (any submarine) is more likely to be seen as a threat than an ally.

>>
>>52258961
>>Enemy develops weapon system superior to the one you didn't actually have

Really? You want to pretend you're that fucking stupid? Really?

The idea behind the single M-class boat was a disaster and all she did was kill her crew. Operating the K-class was so fraught they were nicknamed the "Kalamity-class". Only one of the dozen or so every fired a torpedo at an enemy and it was a dud. The time and effort spent developing both classes resulted in nothing.

In both cases, Germany has some small success with maskirovka. I'm sure the UK pulled similar shenanigans too, before and during the war, and with pretty much the same limited effects. They prevented a zeppelin resupply mission to East Africa with phoney radio messages, for example.

The IJN made noises about building "supercruisers" for most of the 30s resulting in the US building the two, relatively worthless, Alaskas. The UK built the two Powerful-class cruisers in the 1890s thanks to overblown rumors surrounding Russia's Rurik class. It's something that has happened time and time again and all it means is someone is hedging their bets.

They considered her a threat because she was one. What you're apparently too stupid to understand is that the lead ship of Tirpitz class sank the Hood, damaged the PoW, and had most of the RN chasing it for a week.

Compare and contrast that record against the M and K classes.
>>
>>52260541
>They considered her a threat because she was one. lead ship of Tirpitz class sank the Hood, damaged the PoW, and had most of the RN chasing it for a week.

Bismark had a lucky hit on the Hood, which was 20 years older, and probably had bad ammo handling practices being followed.

PoW scored the hit that sunk Bizzy in the end.

Tirpitz and Bizzy were not good ships, the British just didn't want them sortieing out into the convoys to starve the Islands. So they blockaded Tirpitz and tried to sink it to neutralize the annoyance.

Bizzy was sunk more out of a sense of pride then a pure necessity. And as always, Bizzy and Tirpitz were always outnumbered.

What did Tirpitz actually accomplish? Nothing really, unless you call parking two BBs out of a fleet of 15 accomplishing something.

Anson and Howe ran the arctic convoys specifically to deter Tirpitz, and they did.

Does an Algerine Class Minesweeper class as cute?

On a semi related note I've been cobbling together the details for my coastal forces. I'm looking at a handful of S-26 E boats and one or two Type VII U boats to be the enemies of my two Flower Corvettes and my lone Hunt Class. If I could rustle up some merchantmen I could have a 'campaign' for the escorting of an east coast convoy?

I've also thought a little about adding in some aircraft for funsies. Walrus', Coastal Command beauforts and RAF Hurricanes vs Ju-88s, Ar 196s and 109s. I am unsure wether to do these in the same 1/600 or to use 1/300 figures for perspectives sake.

I don't mean to ramble too much I'm trying to organise my thoughts on such a project and any advice would be appreciated.
>>
>>52280204
I've never been much into coastal forces, but I remember William Donald's Stand by for Action had a whole chapter of him herding coal ships up and down the east coast skippering an old DD. There was a part with some Ju 88s diving on them, an american DD, instead of evading, went and showed them it's broadside and got at least one of them. Scared them jerries off good.
You'll find very good planes in 1/285-300 so might wanna go with those.
And that bote is cute, only the bridge seems square and ungainly, like a girl that frowns all the time. (I'd also be frowning if I had to deal with mines all day.)
>>
>>52280581
Well, I like smaller ships such as destroyers, corvettes, frigates etc rather than larger fleet vessels. I also enjoy having slightly more detailed games with a few ships rather than, once again, larger fleet actions.

They don't necessarily have to be coastal but it tends to fit what I want from a game. Actions in the Med could also be interesting regarding Malta and the like.

I intend to use Actions Stations that I posted further up the thread. It seems relatively simple, if not formatted the best, and seems to do what I want.

I've found the Tumbling Dice 1/600s and they seem quite nice. I think there was a lad that had some in /hwg/ a while back but I'll take a look.
>>
>>52277240
It honestly wasn't that bad of a ship from what I read, just like most pre-dreads it happens to be hilarious.
>>
>>52281258
It's not even a pre-dread tho, it's an Ironclad. Pre-dreads have breach-loaders and better designed turrets.

Granted, IIRC it did latter get upgraded into a pre-dread.

Silent Victory-anon here again, this time with the tale of USS Triton. Gonna be using some fan stuff I found, namely Fleet Boats North because why not and also a weather thing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Mcu7D47Gnc

December 41: Marshalls

December 9, encountered Aden Maru (5800) and Uchide Maru (5300) with escorts on a clear night. Triton closed undetected and fired four torps at Aden Maru. Three hit, all duds. Triton escaped undetected but lost contact the following day.

December 12, encountered Koto Maru alone on a clear day. Surfaced and sunk her with the deck gun.

December 15, encountered a convoy, closed and attacked Batopaha Maru with six torps. Five hit, all exploded. Triton escaped undetected but lost contact the following day.

December 18, encountered Yoshida Maru alone on a rainy night, attacked with deck gun, failed to sink her, used a torpedo, dud, used one more, sunk.

December 21, encountered Kori Maru alone on a rainy day, fired two torpedoes, missed with both, fired two more, one hit and sunk her.

Transit home was uneventful.

LCDR Anon received the Silver Star.

Feb 42: Midway

During transit, attacked by bomber, disabled diesel #2 temporarily and seriously wounded a crewman.

Upon arriving in the theater, Triton had a stroke of luck: ULTRA intercepts gave them directions to the BB Nagato on the night Feb 11. Sneaking in, Triton fired six torpedoes at her. Five hit, but four were duds. However, Triton was able to escape safely and return the following night. Again five hits and four duds, but the second blow finished Nagato. Triton was then detected. The first barrage punctured her fuel tanks, leading LCDR Anon to order her to begin exceeding test depth. The next barrage struck true as she dove, disabling diesel #3 and causing flooding, but after that she managed to escape. Although the diesel was repaired the next day, the fuel leak was not, forcing Triton to abort back to Pearl. (got the reroll one roll token last time, used it to avoid the “accidentally sink a hospital ship” event, got lucky)

Thankfully, her return transit was uneventful.

LCDR Anon received the Navy Cross.

May 42: Marshalls

Transit was uneventful.

On May 10, the boat was pooped, wounding a crewman on watch.

On May 13, Triton encountered a convoy on the sunny day. She attempted to follow them and wait for nightfall, but the convoy slipped away.

The rest of the patrol and transit home was uneventful

July 42: Aleutians

Triton was temporarily assigned to the base in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, to conduct patrols in the north.

Transit was uneventful

On July 15, encountered Eifuku Maru (3500) with escorts on a rainy day. Waiting until nightfall, she closed the range and fired four torpedoes. Three hit, all exploded. However, the escorts spotted Triton and attacked, disabling her periscope. Although she escaped, the periscope was irreparable. As she was no longer effective against the warships in the area, she aborted the patrol.

During transit home she was attacked twice by aircraft, but dived in time both times.

September 42: Kuriles

Transit was uneventful

On September 12, she encountered the Sagami Maru with escorts on a rainy day. Following until nightfall, she attempted to close, but was detected and attacked. However, the first barrage caused no damage and Triton was able to slip away.

On September 18, she dove to avoid aircraft.

On September 21, encountered DD Usugumo with her division on a clear night. Attempting to close she was detected and attacked. Although she got away, damage to her periscope and hydrophones, as well as losing half her forward torpedoes, forced her to abort.

Her transit home was uneventful

December 42: Aleutians: Recon

During transit she was attacked, damaging electric #3 and seriously wounding a crewman. The crew were able to repair the engine.

While conducting recon, she was forced to dive to avoid air attack.

On December 15, she encountered Meikai Maru with escorts on a clear night. She closed the range and fired four torps. Three hit and two exploded, sinking her. Triton then managed to slip away safely.

The remainder of the patrol and transit home was uneventful.

LCDR Anon received a promotion to CDR.

More like patrol for broken periscopes. AND IT HAPPENED AGAIN

February 43: Empire

Transit was uneventful

February 9, encountered Yoshinogawa Maru (1400) with escorts on a rainy night. Closed in, fired four torps. All hit and exploded, escaped successfully.

Feb 12, encountered Unkai Maru #12 (2700) and Fukko Maru (3800) with escorts on a clear night. Closed in, fired three torps at each. 2 hit Unkai Maru, both exploded, sunk. One hit Fukko Maru, dud. The escorts then detected Triton and attacked, inflicting hull damage, temporarily putting diesel #3 and the radio out of action, killing one crewman, and disabling the periscope and dive planes. As such, Triton was forced to abort.

Her return home was uneventful.

alt-Kancolle Triton confirmed for permanent broken glasses
>>
>>52299914
June 43: Marianas

Transit was uneventful

June 9: Encountered Sanyo Maru (2900) escorted only by DD Isoname (2000) on a clear night. Triton closed in and fired six torpedoes at Isoname. Five missed, and the hit was a dud. However, Triton was not detected. The next night, Triton repeated the attack. This time three missed, but the three that hit all exploded. However, as Triton was planning to surface, another escort arrived and attacked her. Triton was able to escape, but suffered temporary damage to her AA gun and aft torpedo doors, and permanent damage to her periscope. As such she aborted her patrol.

Transit home was uneventful.

These fucking dice.
>>
>>52300237
I take it back, at least I sunk something that time. Hell, at least I saw something that time.

August 43: Marshalls

The entire patrol was uneventful.
>>
>>52300275
And things go even more downhill.

October 43: Marshalls - Recon

Transit was uneventful.

The recon was completed successfully.

October 12, encountered a convoy during the day and waited for night. Triton closed the range and fired two torpedoes at each ship. Two hits, two explosions, sunk Shinju Maru (3600). One hit, no explosion on Fukusei Maru (2200). Two hits, two explosions, sunk Hakuun Maru #2 (900). Triton escaped successfully, but lost contact with the convoy the following day.

October 15, encountered a convoy on a clear night. Made the same attack as last time, but all torpedoes either missed or were duds. Triton was detected and the first salvo broke her in two.

Welp. Rolled the “Instant Death” effect on the escort attack table. Such is life. At least she had a decent run. 12 ships for 63600 tons.

Just checked over the TROMs at combinedfleet. Yamato and Musashi were both at Truk in '43 along with Nagato, but the land mass behind the ships isn't Truk.

As >>52323374 says, the three were also together at Tawitawi in the Sulu Sea off Brunei for Operation Kon ( the relief of Biak called off when the US invaded the Marianas), stayed there during A-Go (The Philippine Sea battle off the Marianas), and finally left from there for Sho-I-Go (the whole Palawan, Engano, Suraigo, Samar, Leyte scrum).

So that is a rare photo of both Hotels in the same frame.

Last pictures of the Nagato before nuclear detonation. My friend's grandfather took these. Hilariously, the salvage crew sent to the Nagato had their own boat pull away half way through the job and they thought they were going to be vaporized as part of the test. They panicked for over an hour before another boat came to collect them and the rest of the valuable materials from the Nagato before the detonation was to take place.

It's actually a nice dive on a good day, and she's the only IJN capital ship you can visit. The others are gone, sunk deep and out of sight or else broken up for scrap after the war.

If I'm doing a ship or group of ships primarily for one theatre, I try to do whatever scheme they were wearing at the time as best as I can. But if not, then it's whatever I can find good references of, or that seems plausible if not. My Royal Navy shit in particular is very much in the latter category.

1/1800 War At Sea repaint. It was actually a pretty nice sculpt, all things considered.

I'd like to get my hands on pic related, but because of the peculiarities related to cmgs, the WaS ones are ridiculously expensive, and the WTJ ones that they offer are as builts, so it would mean a lot of conversion work.

>>52339095
The argument of the people who made it was

Gun was a 12-incher with an effective range of 15000 yards, goddamn overkill for destroying merchant vessels. Designers apparently also didn't conceive of the many problems having an open gun would cause while travelling underwater.

So far as I know no such thing exists. This proposal was approved and funding was released in 1937, but shipbuilding yards were too busy shitting out destroyers with only nominal AA capacity.
>>
>>52340678
Oh I figured it was never built. I just meant the specs for the proposal.
>>
>>52341949
Again, so far as I'm aware those details were either not fully worked out or the documents were lost. So all we have are approximations.

The revised plan a few years later never even got past the proposal phase.

Even though they rebuilt the Kongous as "fast battleships", don't mistake that for "fast battleship" doctrine as we know it. Their primary purpose was still to engage as part of an 8-8 Fleet in a DECISIVE BATTLE, and their heavy AA suites and secondary batteries were considered sufficient. Same as with Nagato and Mutsu and their speed: 25kt was fine for what they were intended to do.

If they'd just given up their pipe dream of fighting the elusive DECISIVE BATTLE they may have made vastly different choices. Their much-touted Special Type destroyers certainly would've come out ahead for it.

Not a particularly appealing bote. She wasn't terribly fast, her 16" guns were fairly underwhelming compared to competing designs even in the 15" range, she only had two screws instead of four, and she had a nasty habit of ruining her own plumbing and lighting.

But to her credit her belt armor was respectable, and neither sister ever bumped the boom gate vessel at Hoxa.

It's such a shame it was just a pipe dream, can you imagine how amazing it would be to study "The Battle of Midway, where the Japanese and US Battleship fleets engaged each other in a battle which would decide the fate of the Pacific War." Or even better, some kind of utterly fantastical engagement between the KM, IJN and RM vs the USN and RN fleets in the Indian Ocean, just a knock down drag out fight to the end.
>>
>>52351430
>some kind of utterly fantastical engagement between the KM, IJN and RM vs the USN and RN fleets in the Indian Ocean
Sounds like the plot of a pulp action novel. Random storm shifts battlefleets across time and space to this location, they all decide to duke it out instead of doing the sensible thing and just running away because this would be fucking nuts and the krauts know they'd lose and they're thousands of miles from home and near British territory

Oh yes, utterly pulp and impossible but also truly glorious. Maybe stick it at the end of some Benny Hill tier chase of the German fleet South, until they reach Spain where the RM runs Gibraltar in the night and joins them, only to be chased further South by the Med fleet, down around Africa and into the Eastern Indian Ocean, where the Nips and Yanks are already squaring up to have a big anachronistic BB throwdown.

>>52351578
Well the French were already defeated by the time Japan and the US showed up to the war, and the Free French Naval Forces were pretty tiny, so not really be worth mentioning in specific, though I assume they'd be there on account of literally everyone else having made it.
