I mean, I'm absolutely fine with prioritizing a local store over other sellers, because CFB or TCG or wherever aren't providing me a place to play and events and shit. I'd pay 18 dollars for a 15 dollar card for the convenience of having it in my hands right now, and supporting a store.

TCGplayer from reputable sellers. Leave feedback on all of your purchases. If any seller gives you a card of lower quality than your purchase, you can pretty much demand a refund with little to no strings attached.

I would never buy singles worth more than a dollar at an LGS because anything they list as NM will almost always be more Lightly Played or Moderatley Played.

Jar. Toolbox is too easy to kill, too narrow, and if you need to protect a specific artifact creature, Lightning Greaves or Swiftfoot Boots are better options.

Asking mostly for the eventuality that I get hit with mass removal (and don't have darksteel forge up), since it hits through hexproof/shroud. I could also go Metallurgeon-- Doesn't regenerating untap the target? If so, could it regenerate itself, then immediately regenerate another artifact? The only other artifact regenerators I saw were Loxodon Mender (too expensive), Pteron Ghost (can't recycle with my current deck), and Clockwork Gnomes (Metallurgeon but shit)

>>52228971
Oh fuck, I forgot Artificer's Intuition existed. I might actually replace Trinket Mage with that. Is the body on the Salvagers worth the price/not being an artifact/hitting with Ashnod's Transmogrant?
>>
>>52229115
Salvagers takes a lot to be good, but when he's good, he's great. It takes a certain kind of artifact deck to appreciate him, since he doesn't work well as general purpose recursion if the only thing putting artifacts in your graveyard is an opposing Krosan Grip.

Basically, you need to be abusing him to be using him.
>>
>>52229115
>Doesn't regenerating untap the target?
The exact opposite.
>>
>>52229115
> Doesn't regenerating untap the target? If so, could it regenerate itself, then immediately regenerate another artifact?
Nothing about this is correct. Regenerating something TAPS it, not untaps it, and even if it did untap it for some reason, you can't regenerate, untap, and then activate the Metallurgeon during the resolutoin of an ability.

NOPE. It's a very fun trick to monoG clever impersonate.
>>
Tokens don't count as permanents, right? e.g. if I made an arbitrarily large army of token creatures, then got Cyclonic Rift'd, I'd still be able to swing/block with them?
>>
>>52230409
They are still creatures or artifacts, which are permanents.
>>
>>52230409
Pretty sure they do count as permanents, even though they are exiled if they are put in any other zone then the battlefield. I think They'd all be exiled by cyclonic rift.
>>
>>52230355
Vesuva and Thespian's Stage copy the actual card. The creature is made a legal target by the enchantment but since what it's copying doesn't have the enchantment attached it is the creature.

Works with all nonland permanents except with Planeswalkers since the land doesn't have any loyalty counters and immediately dies.
>>
>>52230409
Tokens get hit by rift and are exiled do to their replacement effect.
>>
>>52230428
>>52230442
>>52230463
Damn, figures. So basically the only ways to reliably deal with Rift are to either counterspell, immediately Rift them back, or immediately kill them with fireball/exsanguinate/allahu ackbar them with Aetherflux Reservoir.

Vesuva would be fine copying a planeswalker, just not Thespian's Stage.
>>
>>52230481
I mean if you have goblin bombardment or something similar, you could sac them all for a win.
>>
>>52230512
I should have specified that sorry. Loyalty counters are essentially an etb effect that doesn't use the stack so Vesuva would work fine since entering will allow you to "trigger" the loyalty effect.
>>
>>52230448
Pretty sure vesuva would get loyalty counters, since it enters as the planeswalker I think it would get those put on it.

They are permanents, they just cease to exist after they move to any zone other than the battlefield as a state based action.
>>
>>52228448
Zada is just a bunch of commons and uncommons throw together.
>>
>>52230639
When are state based actions checked?
>>
>>52230463
>their replacement effect.

No, no. As >>52230639 said, it's a state-based action that causes tokens to vanish. This is important, because a replacement effect would prevent a token from "dying", but the SBA allows them to die and then gets rid of them afterwards.

For a practical example, say you controlled a Blood Artist, a Spirit Token, and Progenitus and someone played Wrath of God. Blood Artist would see that itself and the token died, but Progenitus' replacement effect means that it did not "die" and so would not be counted.
>>

>704.3. Whenever a player would get priority (see rule 116, “Timing and Priority”), the game checks for any of the listed conditions for state-based actions, then performs all applicable state-based actions simultaneously as a single event. If any state-based actions are performed as a result of a check, the check is repeated; otherwise all triggered abilities that are waiting to be put on the stack are put on the stack, then the check is repeated. Once no more state-based actions have been performed as the result of a check and no triggered abilities are waiting to be put on the stack, the appropriate player gets priority. This process also occurs during the cleanup step (see rule 514), except that if no state-based actions are performed as the result of the step’s first check and no triggered abilities are waiting to be put on the stack, then no player gets priority and the step ends.

So, for instance, if a token with four toughness has four damage marked on it, it would die as a state-based action. Then, because something died, it would immediately run through the state-based actions again and see that there was a token in a zone other than the battlefield and remove it.

Even then, there's not really any room to do any shenanigans with tokens, if you were hoping to be able to flicker them or something, because:
>110.5g A token that has left the battlefield can’t move to another zone or come back onto the battlefield. If such a token would change zones, it remains in its current zone instead. It ceases to exist the next time state-based actions are checked; see rule 704.

>Cards in Moderately Played condition are allowed to have flaws visible to the naked eye. Cards in Moderately Played condition can have border wear, corner wear, scratching or scuffing, creases or whitening, minor dirt buildup, or any combination of mild examples of these defects.

The most severe thing a Moderately Played card can have wrong with it would be a crease, but it can't be a significant enough crease that the card would be considered "marked" if it's in a sleeve, and it typically won't be a crease that covers the full length of the card.

Out of curiosity, is there any multicolor commander that could be played as if they're monocolor and only use dual lands to get mana to cast your commander? I'm thinking maybe someone who would benefit from big black mana or something.
>>
>>52232098
What exactly is the purpose of this layout? I guess you could either turn it sideways as a reminder but it seems kind of contrived since I guess that is a way to do it but I don't think it's something people naturally do with cards with a graveyard effect.

It also bugs me that Consequence kind of took space from flashback (Do X, Flashback N When this card is cast from the grave, instead do Y) but whatever.

Otherwise... I guess any of them? You could play a RG commander as just G or a Colgate commander as only B, but that would be a intentional deck building handicap. If you're into that, go for it, I guess.

Well, I'd say that any commander with green in the identity would work as mostly green. Green has excellent removal and ramp and decent card advantage in EDH, so it's basically all you need.

Dude, you can totally play Ghave with no infinite combos. You can have complete control of the board and prevent anyone from doing anything, but you don't have to have infinite combos.

The best example of this I have seen, where you aren't just making a worse version of a deck is Oona. She works well going for big black mana, letting you abuse cabal coffers, nirkana revenant, crypt ghast, magus of the coffers, gauntlet of power, caged sun, bubbling muck, extraplanar lens, etc.

You could do mono blue instead and just use the artifact mana doublers. Either way if you want to abuse her ability without going infinite (or in addition to) it's not a subpar strategy.

THIS

Gahiji can be built so many ways- politics, group slug with tokens, mega-ramp into fliers and so on. He's also incredible glue if you want to go for a tribal strategy- he fits dragons, humans, beasts and even angels together extremely well. You'd be incredibly surprised how much 4-6 extra points of combat damage can do for you.

>>
>>52235638
Gahiji takes advantage of the fact that you can build around his ability in multiple ways. A Windborn Muse or Ghostly Prison alongside him encourages a brawl at the table that you can emerge unscathed from. Political/pillowfort is a strong way to go (yes, you CAN do pillowfort in Naya) that will lead to powerful finishes with the flexibility of midrange decks included. Rite of the Raging Storm and Master Warcraft are your friends. I'd also recommend an enchantress subtheme to capitalize on you already leaning on global effects.

And does those 3 cards combo how I think it does? While attacking the baloth gives +2/+2 and trample to SB and WB, while the WB gets an additional +2/+2 from SB, pumping her up to a 5/5. Would she then give +5/+5 to SB and WB?

Run plenty of stasis effects to slow and limit the benefits your opponents get from drawing so much. Winter orb, static orb, stasis.

Run lots of pillowfort, silent arbiter, portcullis, propaganda, crawlspace, etc.

Baloth has a static ability, so the + is always active (assuming that you control your commander in this situation), so when you attack, you put the Wild Beastmaster's ability on the stack first, then Stonebrow's. i just googled it after i posted that

he couldve just said group slug and i wouldve understood perfectly

ive never played mogis group slug but i'm pretty sure a completely apolitical deck like that will literally never win because you will always be the player with the least life while your symmetrical life loss effects are in play (because of 3 players hating you out)

kokusho is also group slug, but he also heals himself and control the shit out of the board with grave pact effects and black's removal. you don't need a board when you're playing monoblack so you can just blow the fuck out of everything with all is dust and resume reanimating immediately.

kokusho is ridicule strong in 75% metas. the only thing that really stops him consistently is inf combos and one-shot commander damage memes. he's also fun in a way, because he burns everyone but it's not as simple as an upkeep trigger, you get to play around with fun graveyard tech

literally the only reason i took mine apart was because my group got triggered by him super hard, and i got triggered by proxy because im such a cool guy

8rack plays simarly to stax in 99 singleton where my main method of victory is asymmetrical resource denial. The entire point is to play against the whole table solo and to say it can never win shows you don't understand the deck.

Since Ask a Judge isn't a thread atm, I'll ask here: How does Nostalgic Dreams interact with old Ulamog and Kozilek? I'm building Dakkon Blackblade, and the idea of sniping someone's lands then smacking them with my frivilously-costed commander sets me atwitter. I don't need to steal that many lands, but I just need a few reliable ways to pull it off. >>
>>52238329
The absolute first thing you do when casting a spell is place it on top of the stack at 601.2a.

Literally the last step you actually take in the act of casting a spell at 601.2h is where you pay additional costs. After that effects that would've triggered would go on the stack. You would shuffle and then do piss fucking nothing assuming you didn't have another way to dump crap into your GY before Nostalgic Dreams resolves.

>>52238724
I have fun by pubstomping at my LGS. Particularly the part about having all of the fun, I love it when only I have fun and everyone else groans. So it's 100% true.
>>
>>52238329
Abilities that trigger during casting won't be put on the stack while the spell is being cast. If you discard Ulamog, you'll finish casting Nostalgic Dreams and put it on the stack, then Ulamog's triggered ability will go on the stack above it. So it's an unfortunately useless thing to do.

No anon. If you're getting into magic, I'd skip the 4c decks. They're very hard to improve if you don't understand the fundamentals of deck building.

The 2c ones are pretty straight forward and generally easy to acquire. But that being said, what colours do you like?

>>
>>52239568
That's fine and dandy, except this person is trying to get INTO magic. They don't know a lot (if anything) about deckbuilding. A precon gives them a general idea of what to do.

Not to mention it includes a player friendly learning guide in it and explains how commander is played.
>>
>>52239613
http://mtgcommander.net/rules.php

There I just saved anon $40.
>>
>>52239589
Never said that, a precon should be a starting point not your main deck. You can play with it out of the box, sure but it's gonna get old after a couple games. That's why they put so many staples and legendary creatures that fit the theme so you can start building YOUR deck, they give you options that's also why they feel all over the place and built like shit.
>>
>>52239641
Then he may as well buy those cards as singles for the deck he actually wants instead of one filled with cards for multiple decks and built like shit.
>>
>>52239555
The meren precon or the ob nixlis prrcon probably fit in what kind of deck you want.
>>
>>52239555
Well, I know nothing about heathstone so I can't help you there. What parts of that deck do you like?

Monoblack is a colour that's defined by excess. In general, you're going to pay life, sacrifice creatures, and get powerful cards with moderate drawbacks for their use. There is a monoblack precon with Ob Nixilis, The Black Oath in it, and it's a pretty reasonable starting point. That being said, if there's a particular aspect of black you like, there are a couple of precons that splash black.

The most obvious answer is the Meren precon from last year. I have one myself, and it's a strong reanimator deck that lets you use your graveyard as a second hand. But, like Atraxa, it was considered the "strongest" 2c one so it might be hard to find. In the same cycle, there's the Daxos, the Returned precon which is more about enchantments and token making. BW is a pretty weird colour combination, in the sense that you have access to tons of removal, but very few win conditions. In that precon there's Karlov, who is a pretty powerful voltron commander with a few nifty upgrades.

>>52239568
>Hey everybody, look at me, I completely missed the point
New players don't understand proper card evaluation or deck building. The precons generally are the best preconstructed products in magic, and if a new player knew enough about singles to build a deck, they wouldn't really need to ask about the quality of the precons in the first place.
>>
>>52239638
Explains nothing of how to play magic in the first place NOT does it teach you how to deckbuild, and a guide that you can keep on you and is new user friendly is 100 times better than a webpage.

I'll take it you've never taught someone magic from the ground up. I've done it with commander products dozens of times, and I've never had any problems. They're made for beginners to get them playing the format. That's what they're designed to do.
>>
>>52239589
The thing is that Breya comes out of the box playable, and then when you want to BUILD for yourself, you have some jumping off points with a few of their own staples and some concept of synergies at work. Building up a collection it would be a decently easy start to play breya for a while then get singles to build into Sharuum and Godo.

Meren's pretty similar value if you can find her, though better out of the box with fewer places to go later.

I've done it over a dozen times, they walk away after game one with a decent understanding of the game because I let them actually play instead of reading a fucking manual. They're not attempting to fly an aircraft they're playing a card game.

>>
>>52239638
Oh wow they now know that you can't put more than 1 card of each and you need 100 cards.
Did that give them a direction to construct his deck?
No
Did that give them an idea of wich cards are useful and could be good with the strategy they had in mind?
No
Did that give them a bunch of useful cards they probably need?
No
Did that give them a bunch of legends to try out as commanders?
No
>>52239661
What if he has no fucking clue on wich cards to buy? Do you expect someone who has no previous knowledge of the game to shit out completely viable decks out of nowhere?
>>
>>52239710
Having a guide next to WHILE playing the game is exactly how you teach.

Pictures > your words.

And you just TOLD them to read rules on how to play commander from a webpage. Don't tell people not to read a manual to play magic and then tell them to read a manual.
>>
>>52239725
>go to google
>type in mtg commander decks
>find one you like
Wow that was almost Herculean in the amount of effort that took.

>>52239744
Actions > pictures
You don't train someone to do something by showing them what doing something looks like, you have them do it. Driving, machinery, drawing, painting, sports, exercise.
>>
>>52239710
Anon, all this boils down to is that you are incredibly broke, and thus sensitive to how much money you spend on magic to a ridiculous extent. The precons aren't scamming you, they're a quality product at a reasonable price point. They give you some neat cards and serve as a good place to start playing with little invested time or effort.

Can you build the deck cheaper? Oh, probably, but you won't get the tokens, the cards will be in erratic quality, and you'll probably have to wait forever for some postal service dick to get them to you.

Get the bug out of your butt, what decks do you play, grand paragon of edh? What would you recommend a new player build?

We aren't reading Derrida or discussing existential post-modernitiy, we're playing magic. You pick whatever colour you think is cool, drop some cash, and have fun drinking beers with your friends. After you learn more about magic, you can build something specific, but it's just silly to spend weeks ordering a shitload of cards for a game you don't even know if you like.
>>
>>52239856
I'm not sure why it takes you weeks to press the add to cart and checkout buttons, but you may actually need a doctor.

Or a passport to move out of Brazil.
>>

>I recommend he build the deck he wants.
I am a new player and i have no idea what to build, sure i can netdeck some shit but how can i know if i will like a particular deck without trying it beforehand?
I also don't know about dropping 2-300$ without knowing if i'll like it.
>>
>>52239856
I don't really have friends to play with. I'll be playing with this girl that I just started seeing. I don't really want to invest a lot of time learning which cards to put into a deck right now, just wanted to buy a "starter" commander deck and fuck around while learning the Commander format.
>>
>>52239871
Yes anon, it takes me weeks to press buttons, and not wait for multiple stores to ship an extremely specific list of cards.
>>

Why would you spend 200-300 brazillian pesos on a single deck? Unless after exchange rates that's about $40 in normal money.

>>
>>52239926
>Why would you spend 200-300 brazillian pesos on a single deck?
Because that's the deck that i chose while netdecking.
>>
>>52239960
Well you either chose within your imaginary budget or well exceeded it.

Either way you chose it so not much anyone else can do for you.
>>
>>52239871
If you were a brand-fucking-new never ever played magic in your goddamned life player, how would you know what cards to even add to your cart without doing a t least a basic search and whittling your results down to the 100-ish cards you need? Then you need to fucking search for those cards one-by-ond and add them to your cart; provided they're even available or within your budget. Then even beyond that you need to wait for the postal service to get it to you.

Did you recently have a stroke, or are you legitimately retarded?

Oh god you don't seem to understand this at all.

That doesn't SHOW them how to deck build. That doesn't INTRODUCE them mechanics in the game. That doesn't explain to then SYNERGY of cards. That doesn't give them a STARTING POINT to go from when later wanting to try something new.

Telling someone who doesn't understand the fundamentals of the game, the nature of the format, or the mechanics and importance of synergy of cards in your deck to just go build a deck is dumb advice.

And $40 isn't that big of a deal anyway. You'd be hard pressed to build a better beginner deck for the same price point. I've tried that, and it usually comes out to at least $60+.

You need to stop thinking you have these resources available to you when you're someone who doesn't know magic at all. They don't because they don't understand them. Shit like edhrec or decks on tappedout aren't gonna do shit for you if you don't know how your deck works.

I've played Gahiji and I can't recommend him.
Having an anthem in the command zone means you need a lot of token producers for going wide, and once you're going wide you want some more anthems. You'll have games where you don't draw your good token producers and you'll durdle like a retard with your anthems and few pillowfort cards available to you.

His ability applying to opponents is not as "epic pillowfort politician xD" as it seems, either. It just makes people either A) not attack at all or B) remove Gahiji so the resident aggro player doesn't go off a couple of turns early.

I use Sapling which is objectively better

Ashnod's Altar and/or Phyrexian Altar to turn creatures into mana

Gutter Grime and/or Golgari Germination and/or Sifter of Skulls to make more sacrificial tokens. Gutter Grime doubles as a wincon.

You have no idea how good Gravespawn Sovereign can be with those zombie tokens...

Why bother with Ever After when you can Rise of the Dark Realms?

Splinterfright and Nighthowler get kinda weak when you empty your GY with Sac Altar into Living Death/Rise of the Dark Realms or if you're continually sifting. Try Lord of Extinction or Terravore to grow off all those lands (and spells and otherwise noncreature things) that mostly stay dead.
