Since dwarfs will probably be a hot topic for the near future I'm asking what's the deal with more high tech dwarfs of the old world
where are they
what technological point did they reach
what are the relations with other dwarfs and their view of mythology/religion

possibly about the less chaos aligned ones; I'm mostly interested in zhufbar if I got it right.

The castle looks rather high-medieval for Dwarves, but still very nice. And Karak Hirn always deserves a little love.

I know, I'm mostly posting that pic as a sort of comparison or to offer parallels for the discussion, but I was asking about the old world itself.

IIrc there were dwarfen pirates exploring and getting lost in the southlands with a flying barge, while age of reckoning had those weird copter-packs, albeit I don't know what was their reception.

That's a mostly complete summary of Warhammer Dwarf info. Its missing some Holds and characters, but its as legit as it gets.
>>
>>52196897
The broken lords were such a cool idea, but they just didn't make sense as a civilization.
Which was sort of the problem with a lot of the Endless Legend civs IMO, like they all defined themselves from straying from a norm that just didn't exist.
>>
>>52197198
I mean the dwarves are all about technological anachronism, I mean they take helicopters to go hit people with axes.

Thing is, if there are more technologically advanced dwarves, we have to ask the question of how they are more advanced.
Did they develop new technology and not share it with the high king? (And is this deliberate, or have they not had contact with Everpeak?)
Did they start mass producing the prototypes a generation or five early?
>>
>>52197363
I'd rather trust the Lexi or the Warhammer wiki over 1d4chan.

>>52197887
That's something that bothered me - as much as people complain about having the generic everyman faction, without it a game can feel confusing, with too many totally unique things slammed together without any sense of direction. Doesn't hurt that it also turns out I suck at Endless Legend.
>>
>>52196538
>what technological point did they reach
Pseudo industrial revolution. They had Ironclads, submarines, gyrocopters, airships and revolvers.
>>
>>52198719
Some of those were available (at least in theory) before the industrial revolution. Most of them weren't as effective as later things (early submarines and revolvers especially), but it kind of makes sense that a race that was so technologically focused might be able to skip past steps real humans had to take to develop such things.

It is fascinating how all of their technological change seems to have little effect on their culture and society like the industrial revolution did.
>>
>>52196897

Dwarfs take pride in old stuff so I imagine most holds are thousands of years old and don't look that different.
>>
>>52199048

I think it's because, while steam is frequently used in battle they still have an artisanal system for crafting stuff. Everything is still hand made rather than spun on a jenny or fabricated.

I bet the Dwarf guilds are so strong they will allow no automation.
>>
>>52199135
This probably also explains why they haven't crushed the other races. If they started building Gyro-copters using automation they would have a massive fleet.

So I'm finally running a game of WFRP again after nearly a six month hiatus and I've got a few new players that are already enjoying it. I've got them running around a town in Nordland trying to find a merchant they were supposed to escort, but have gotten themselves mixed up with a cowardly priest of Ulric, a man posing as a priest of Sigmar and what appears to be a serial killer on the loose with knowledge of surgery and the tools to do it with. The last two are connected with a cult of Nurgle that goes up to a Nordland baron and his family.

But for later I want to introduce an antagonist that can show up later on, a daemon that doesn't necessarily want to kill them but just likes fucking with them. Taking the image of a man in a cloak with theatre mask, but is creepily thin, and changes his expression by passing his hand over the mask. My question is what sort of sound effect would you use for a creature like this? I was thinking of just ripping some Aku laughs and put it on my tablet but I think that might be a little too obvious.
>>
>>52199332
Well, they do look vaguely like boiler suits. You could even fluff them out as mining gear too.
>>
>>52199332
With the right paint scheme, sure.

Althought I'd probably swap out their weapons too for more traditional fare.

Sidenote:
I've been clicking on "Houses" for captcha for like two minutes now.
>>
>>52199515

Yeah I would paint anything that didn't have rivets on a leather colour for a start (I guess I could file the rivets off a lot of the knee pads).

Drop the heads, backpacks and any weapon which isn't an axe or a falchion. I would probably keep the billhook on the champion.

Then see what I can proxy them as. Maybe miners but they can only emerge from water or something.

>CA is your stepdad. Not the best, but better than your biological deadbeat father.

A good analogy. Sure is a shame papa GW treated the setting so poorly and then gave it a terrible sendoff. I've been really into Fantasy lately and off of 40K. Sometimes I can forget that Fantasy as we knew it is long gone. It's sort of depressing.

At least we have 30 years of editions, books, models and other fun stuff to play with anyway. It's the same way I look at Star Wars after Disney consumed it. At least we have the past.

But Gilles is arguably more badass. Fucker was dying and said "You know what? FUCK dying." and pulled a fucking giant spear out of his chest and killed three wyverns with it. In his fucking pajamas.

>>52203435
Basically. We have so much setting to draw on. My own 'canon' version in WFRP has advanced 20 years into the future.

I've said it once, and it wasn't funny the first time, and I'll say it again. CA is the step dad desperately trying to win your love, though he sometimes makes you buy breakfast. GW is the deadbeat dad that blames you for all his failings.

>Sigmar predates Gilles by almost a thousand years.

Artur was a paranoid fucker that was almost smack dab in the middle of Sigmar's proposed Empire, also in command in the most defensible position in the land that wasn't dawi controlled. Artur refused to give command of his tribe to Sigmar, so Sigmar was forced to slay him. Also, he stumbled through the Flame of Ulric which solidified his rule.

Artur could have joined Sigmars confederation but was slain and replaced.

>It is fascinating how all of their technological change seems to have little effect on their culture and society like the industrial revolution did.

I'd attribute that mainly to the situation of their society vs ours. Britain certainly fought plenty of wars during the Industrial Revolution, but these were for the most part far-flung affairs, against enemies that couldn't directly invade Britain. Closest really was Napoleon and he couldn't cross the Channel. So things at home could continue more or less uninterrupted by events elsewhere, and there isn't an air of desperation about things.

Dwarves face a totally different situation, more akin to Germany in 1944. They're being invaded from all sides by tenacious enemies, and holding on for grim death to what they have. Just like Germany, they're producing fantastically high tech, but it's all being devoted towards the war effort. Social change can't really happen when you're fighting for your existence constantly. One of the main drivers of change in the Industrial Revolution for example was transport. Imagine if the Dwarfs didn't have to face constant attacks from Skaven, Goblins and Orcs all through the Underway. Steam trains linking the various holds WOULD lead to gigantic social changes. But you don't have the luxury of devoting that much time and resources to projects like that when every steam engine you make is needed on the front lines.

the ones without helmets are few
from gw range the ones where you can get the most bald heads are probably the basic fyreslayers (since the helmet is made of separate pieces as far as I know), but without conversions the symmetric beards may look bad and you would get a lot of possibly useless bodies if you don't look for the heads separately.

avatars of war had a kit for rangers with some heads having bandanas and patches, I don't remember how many and I'm not even sure the head is separated from the body there, but the more options the better, I guess.

I still feel like, while they're having fun with the game and trying to make it look pretty, there's not as much polish as in older games in some areas.

For instance, there's no animation for crews rolling/pushing siege weaponry or cannons around. You'd think Warhammer would be the perfect time to revive the officers you'd see in units in Empire Total War. And the campaign portion wavers between good and iffy, especially since you can't move units around without a lord and there are stock garrisons that make sieging large cities a hassle.

Knights have their servants find personal kills and take valuables or torphies, peasants sort out the rest and put anything valuable onto carts to haul back to the castle.

All cocunts are immediately confiscated as soon as they are found.

>Empire
Everything the Witch Hunter doesn't immediately burn is quickly divvied up before he can see it according to pre-agreed shares, then shoved down the shirt or pants of the new owner.

Sven stuffs a Beastman head down his pants with the face sticking out, everyone has a good laugh, the Witch Hunter sees this and gives him a snarling lesson on Heresy and Taint before backhanding him. That night Sven's penis becomes self-aware and prepares to take over Sven's mind and create a Chaos cult.

Sort of, but I think Sisters have a stronger relevance in the lore in some spots - the Age of Apostasy, Celestine in this new thing, the discovery of the Necrons.

Chaos Dwarves barely interact with the outside world, and are really just an excuse for better weaponry for the forces of Chaos most of the time. They're also awkwardly straddling a spot of the world that's supposed to be home to Human and Dwarven trade routes to the east.

Is it worth getting mods for Total Warhammer, especially when I don't have all the DLCs?

Mostly all I want is the equivalent of the Empire Total Faction mod for Empire Total War, letting me play as all the minor factions. But I'd like to get a general sense of what mods are worth getting for getting a full WFB feel, and which ones are worth waiting until something offical comes out.

Or they knew the autists would flip their shit if they changed too much.

They played it safe and I can't blame them. They want to make a game based off of Warhammer and not carry it on as its new owners.
>>
>>52223649

Totally depends.

Skaven are selfish and arrogant so they would probably put their own heraldry on something to take the credit.

On the other hand, they're lazy and fuck so they may not be bothered.
>>
>>52223649
The clan engineers will be operating it, so it could go either way.

It comes down to your canon, not theirs.
>>
>>52225322
And I can't really blame them either. I know some people were grumbling over foot squires and hippogryph knights, even as they were mad that their ideas for Bretonnian units didn't magically get in.

But I think it's just how Total War games work - Warhammer aside, they've based themselves strongly off of history and built off of what was already there. They aren't going to try and innovate (aside from what's needed to make what already is there work) if they don't have to. They're probably just pleased that they can do stuff they normally can't with historical-style games, like magic and flying units.

My question is : can he use the runefang while riding the griffon? Or do the runefang stat apply on his cavalry lance as long as he is mounted?
>>
>>52255604

Yes to the first and no to the second.

The lance and the Runefang are two different weapons and you must choose which you use each round of combat if he is mounted.

Once he has dismountd he can only use the Runefang.

To be honest, giving him a lance seems like a waste of points when he has such an expensive weapon. The monster will do most of the killing anyway and you're basically paying points for what? Like a +1 strength on the charge? Doesn't seems worth it to me.

Hey thanks I looked at the cultists and they look nice, as for the Flagellants i like the heads as well but it seems like a real waste to buy a entire box of Flagellants for like 5 heads or so.
Also while i like those I wanted my warband leader to have a the man with the iron mask kind of mask, do you know of any place where you could get one of those?

Is there somewhere pdf with everything statted? For example there are spells for creating ghouls or wraiths but there are no stats of them. FFS.

>>
>>52265136

You can have 'fun' with 1000 points in my opinion as long as your opponent isn't going balls to the wall. Some armies do not scale well.

For an all comers size it's really 2000 - 2500. At this level the game is as balanced as it ever was.

About Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. I've noticed that firearms are absurdly costly, as in one could literally get 12 crossbows for the cost of a single firearm even though crossbows are of comparative power to a firearm. This doesn't make much sense as the Empire is supposed to have entire units equipped with Firearms and Repeater handguns. Why would anyone think this is balanced from a gameplay perspective? What would be a fair cost?

I'm not sure how it is in WFRP, but as far as the lore is concerned, vampires and necromancers tend to use Dhar, which is sort of the dark twin of High Elf magic, which uses all 8 winds.

So technically they could probably harness any wind they wanted, but they probably wouldn't split off into any one wind when they could just use Dhar, if that makes any sense.

Because there are no rune master humans in the lore as of WFRP 2e. For one, dwarfs would never teach that sacred secret to humans. For another, no human could ever manage the art anyway.

Vampires are the only critters that seem capable, RAW, of learning multiple winds of magic and will, by normal progression, usually pick up a dark lore and an arcane lore. Mostly, though, they use dhar, and specifically necromancy.

That's not upside down.

If you want to hit an opponent with your shield and you use the pointy end, you have to hit them with the exact point or all the power is lost. If you catch them with the slope it will just slide off them doing nothing.

If you use it that way though, and hit them with the flat end, firstly it's much easier to hit them, and when you do it will transfer all the power of the blow into the enemy regardless of which part of the flat edge hits them.

So - what rule set are most people actually playing with? Seems like a mix between Endhammer, 9th Age, and people just turning back the clock to 7th (or whatever they liked best). Had a guy demo Kings of War for me as well, which seemed like a passable not-warhammer system.

I don't think there's much consensus locally. Anybody have opinions on which is "best" (extremely subjective, I know)?

My brief experience with Kings of War was positive - I especially like how fast it plays. I think we played a 1500-point equivalent (going by model count) in about an hour. My only reservation with it is that some of the rules sections, especially artillery and magic, seem very "flat".. maybe "sparse" is a better word.

I imagine there are two reasons that this might be:

One, it's just peasants being stupid. Men-at-Arms might be told how to hold a shield properly (though they seem to mess that up sometimes too), but fanatics would have no such training. You might laugh at the idea of someone not knowing something so basic, but in Bretonnia the nobility would probably go out of their way to avoid letting peasants arm themselves or learn any sort of martial skills unless absolutely necessary. Control of information is totally possible, especially when peasants can rarely leave their villages. If you're more hopeful, you might argue that peasants could be attempting to make themselves look stupid so that nobles leave them alone because they seem harmless.

The other reason I can think of is that they're trying to avoid some law that hasn't been expressed directly in the lore. Maybe it's technically illegal to use the armaments of a knight, but they can get around it somehow by holding the shields upside down, covering the grail symbols with parchment or cloth, and using swords that are obviously broken or rusted. Or maybe it's because the Grail symbol is only used by Grail Knights, so it would be dishonorable for them to show it, or showing deference.

There's also a vague idea that this might be intentional, that as foot troops they want to protect their legs and lower body in a way that's not feasible with shields meant to be used by knights.

Hello everyone, got an upcoming match of triumph & treachery down at my club with four other people. As a newcomer to the hobby I'd love to hear your take on the army I'm thinking of bringing. I'm interested in whatever opinions you might have. As a player I prefer fun before highly competitive playstyles.

I think that the other players will bring Wood Elves/Orcs, Dark Elves, Bretonnia and Vampire Counts.

Everyone brings 1500 points.

The army is the following:

Sorc Lord + MoN + Lore of Death + Lvl 4 Wizard + Palanquin of Nurgle + Dispel Scroll + Enchanted Shield + Potion of Speed + Talisman of Preservation + Flaming Breath.

Festus the Leechlord.

2x5 Chaos Warhounds.

17x Chaos Warriors + MoN + Halberds + Full Command.

17x Chaos Warriors + MoN + Shields + Full Command + Gleaming Pennant.

Gorebeast Chariot + MoN.

The Sorc Lord goes into the shield-wielding unit of Warriors and Festus goes into the one with Halberds.
The idea behind the Sorc Lord is to have a strong wizard who is capable, through Flame Breath and Potion of Speed, to bring down or atleast severly wound most characters that are thrown his way.

>fun lists
>level 4 death mage

Brets should be a piece of cake.

Careful since nobody is packing artillery and so the WE player might be tempted to run Treeman & treekin which you have literally nothing to kill of, expecially if he goes with level 4 lore of life mage.

Try to not get your warriors in combat with zombies, as they can and will tarpit them for all eternity. Also be careful of a swooping terrorgeist on your lord. Even with discipline 9, a no-wound scream can and will fuck you up. Seriously, if he brings a terrorgeist, it is your number one priority. It can easily one shot or cripple anything in your army.

DE i've never played against, so no idea how to handle them

>7th and 8th are literally the prequel to end times and by extension AoS

If you want to play that game, it can be argued how the first edition of Warhammer was the prequel to the second edition, and so on and so on until End Times and by extension AoS.

TW:WH is trying to adapt the setting in a way that would make sense for a videogame, and in a lot of ways is very close to the actual lore. An adaptation like that can't really be 1:1 in line with the setting, especially if some changes are just easier - like having Boris Todbringer openly contesting the Emperor's election instead of just falling in line and quickly becoming a fast friend of Franz, or avoiding the conflict with Bretonnia that should happen after Karl Franz gets crowned and was one of his first actions as Emperor.

Thanks for the reply.

I take it that Death Magic is seen as a bit OP? I've heard stories about people basically one shotting the opponent with a well timed Purple Sun of Xereus but my thought was that that was pretty much a once in a life time happen-stance. However when I myself faced it my Festus got roflstomped so I don't doubt that it's a powerful lore. My decision to include it, as I find the nurgle lore to be more appealing fluffwise, is that I need something to kill off characters and large dangerous things. That in combination with that Festus comes with the Nurgle Lore lead me to stick to Death, but I will reconsider if you think it's too much.

>Treeman & treekin which you have literally nothing to kill of, expecially if he goes with level 4 lore of life mage.
I was hoping that my Warriors of Nurgle with Halberds and Festus' poision would be able to take care of such things. If that fails I do have the flaming breath on my Sorc Lord.

>VC tips:
From my limited experience I've noticed that an assissting charge and the follow up-combat from a gorebeast chariot is quite handy when it comes to dealing with zombies, but I will definitely be aware of getting stuck in a tarpit.
I will definitely try to crush any terrorgheist that might be thrown against me ASAP. Those things are killers.

It's fine. It works, it's Mordeimy, I just can't get excited for it. The design decisions kind of left me with a bad taste in my mouth and so I don't get into it.

Are you suggesting that I should change lore to that of Nurgle? In such case I would have two wizards with the lore of Nurgle.

Anything after 6th just doesn't feel like warhammer is supposed to. It's fan fiction and anyone who thinks it's canon might as well go to the AoS general and jack off to steamshit space marine dwarfs who shove ur-gold up their ass to go faster, because you aren't a real warhammer fan.
