Woo icecream!
>>
>>52182510
Already done by my DM.

Expensive as all hell, it's not easily made.

Now if magic got involved, I suspect that would be different but it seems to be a bit limited.
>>
Oh man that sounds great, I love ice cream.
>>

The Romans had it.

But yeah, your pic looks sooo goood.
>>

Sounds pretty cool OP.
>>

>>

Ice cream is just cream that's iced. Hence the name.

Sounds comfy, I'm assuming you're talking about a fantasy setting where you assume ice cream wouldn't exist despite it exist despite it existing in many ancient societies, plus the addition of magic would probably make the process even easier. Imagine a wizard or alchemist running a magic ice cream shop, that'd be pretty comfy.

>Apparently REAL American Faire food is OP's pic, but deep fried and covered in caramel

Jesus Christ man. No wonder obesity is running rampant in your country. Please tell me that these things are only made once a year.
>>
>>52186324

Yeah, it's true, fair food has been deep fried ridiculous shit for years now, and it's generally a once a year thing. People don't eat that stuff regularly. (Well there's probably some lardass out there who does, but not typical people. Even the fat ones)

Deep fried ice cream, deep fried bacon, deep fried something I ran over on the way here. It's crazy.
>>
>>52186324
My hypothetical fair equivalent isn't real. As far as I know, at any rate.
>>
>>52186392
Oh, Thank God for that, then. I've heard stories of deep fried Twinkies, Luthors, and some restaurant out west that either won't let you in/will let you eat for free if you're over 140-180 kg.

So long as those things are rare, then you haven't completely fallen into a hellscape of fatness.
>>
>>52186462
Doesn't the UK have a higher obesity rate than America?
>>
>>52182852
See, American junk food I get. It's often horrifying and excessive, but mostly in a "All the savory rich things mashed together that to fulfill your darkest desires, at the small price of your health" way. But when I see Canadian junk food, I just get confused as to why anyone would want that, and I'm pretty sure this isn't the first time I've had this reaction. I don't think I've ever in my life thought that what my onion ring burger needed was chocolate and peanut butter. Then take poutine, and I find myself asking why anyone would want to put GRAVY all over what is supposed to be a finger food? If you've made it so that fries need to be eaten with a knife and fork, you've done something wrong.
>>
>>52186492
That's because we love lard, ale, and don't have much room to exercise in.

It's just cold flavored milkcurd. If your setting has milk, ice, salt and sugar in it, some apprentice confectionairre should stumble upon the recipe.
>>
>>52182548
Some form of ice-based treat has been around since even the Egyptians, but Gelato as we know it today has been invented somewhere during the Renaissance. So even if you're anal about plausibility, it's entirely appropriate for your guys in full plate armor to enjoy a cold pistachio gelato. Of course, until very recently these cold treats were limited to the very rich.

And also, ice cream has a longer history then you'd think; the earliest examples of what would eventually become modern ice cream (as opposed to just crushed ice with fruit or honey on it) was in the 16th century, and even in those records it shows that it had been around for a little while.

It's not the modern stuff by any means but it's still recognizably ice cream.

>>
>>52193271
>That and sugar being pushed so hard everyone is addicted unless they make a conscious effort to avoid it.

Sugar isn't the problem, it's corn syrup.
People put that shit in everything from soda to fried chicken because it's so much cheaper than cane sugar and it's like 250% more calorie dense because you need more of it to sweeten.

People need to stop drinking soda and actually look at whats inside their food.
>>
>>52193462
Corn syrup is no different than any other type of sugar. The issue is the quantity and frequency, if you replaced the corn syrup with cane sugar or honey or pear juice you'd have the same health effects.
>>
>>52193560
Except you need far less cane sugar or honey to sweeten.

It's the industrial food that's the problem. Corn syrup is so much cheaper to produce and use that people shove it down our throats because of market competition. The goal is to make the sweetest most addictive product at the cheapest selling point.
If we were restricted to Cane sugar or honey we would consume much fewer calories by both nature of the product and expense.

TLDR people would use less if it cost them more.
>>
>>52193560
Hello big food, it's nice to know you browse /tg/ too.

It's too bad that "corn sugar' thing didn't stick. huh.
>>
>>52193671
Cut out corn syrup in your diet and replace it with an equivalent amount of can sugar and tell me how much better you feel, you dumb double nigger.
>>
>>52193462
It isn't about the calorie density with sugar, it's about what it does to your body. You start eating/drinking sweet shit, and your body goes in to "must be time to eat" mode, making you more hungry, starts insulin production, and next thing you know you're craving more sugar. It's the same reason diet sodas will fuck with you. It's not sugar, but it's gets your body craving sweet shit.

Calorie density only really plays in once you realize that your meals should be so many calories, and you marvel at how many calories are in supposedly healthy food or the "small" portions of stuff.
>>
>>52187378
ice cream is easy to make during the times of the renaissance. any household with an ice rack can make ice cream.all you need is milk, butter, sugar, cream, and fruits, a churning stool along with some ice and salt and an ice rack or cold cellar to keep it.
In the past, especially during the colonial times, ice cream is so common that its often a household treat,
>>
>>52182510

>>
>>52193560
>if you replaced the corn syrup with cane sugar or honey or pear juice you'd have the same health effects.
Not true at all. Natural sugars, like those from fruits or honey, have a mix of fructose and glucose. While HFCS or "corn sugar" is mostly or exclusively fructose. Excessive fructose is harmful to the liver and is likely a major cause in the health issues associated with obesity.
It is true that excessive sugar is bad for us, no matter if it is natural or HFCS, and we should work to reduce our sugar intake regardless of source. But HFCS is MORE harmful than other sugars, despite what the industry tries to tell you.
>>
>>52194056
>He thinks ice was something normal people just had around at all times
>>
>>52188245
Two millennia ago China was freezing milk and syrup to make a frozen dessert. I don't know exactly what it was like, but the two main origin stories for European ice cream that I hear either have Russians getting it from the east or Marco Polo bringing it to Italy from Asia, so it seems like a likely candidate for ice cream's ancestor
>>
>>52192238
Most domesticated animals have origins in Asia and they are just about the most lactose intolerant people in the world
>>
>>52193462

I can tell you, cutting out soda, and just drinking more water made a huge difference pretty quickly. I don't even exercise. Like, fuckin never. But just getting that shit out of your body except for the once in a while drink with something, or as a mixer with booze does wonders. You feel better after maybe a week or two, and I've probably dropped a good 10 pounds just by not drinking soda at lunch.

Fair foods are staples. The reason they get so much attention is cause they are literally the peak of unhealthy foods, its why they are usually only sold at fairs, since it's a chance for people to go out, have fun, and just forget about worrying, including about eating healthy, it's a celebration of ludicrous culinary creations.

I stopped drinking soda a long time ago and mostly just drink green tea, water and milk. The last time I drank a soda, my taste buds just fucking rejected that shit. I once thought it was funny how anyone could not like soda, but now I see how it is from the other side.

I don't know about "early America," but as recently as the early 1990s, a drugstore in my hometown also had a counter where you could get milkshakes, etc.

I think I heard somewhere along the way that the reason for the association came from the fact that early pharmacists had the sort of mixing equipment that made ice cream easier.

there are ways to do it right, just don't throw some skippy and smuckers on a burger and call it a day.

i had a hot dog at a pop up that was pb&j. it had a raspberry ancho chili relish, thai peanut sauce and some sort of crunchy fried banana things. i would definitely eat it again.

That was the rationale I used for hamburgers being a thing in our setting. Adventurers came up with sandwiches after realizing that waiting to cook all that fresh food together or having to stop completely and make camp to eat was really silly in a world where mold can walk around and bite your ass. The natural progression from that was hamburgers. The halflings are trying to set up what's essentially a burger chain throughout the kingdom so that adventurers don't have to go to major cities to get basic food.

Fair magic, nigger. (They coat the ice cream (which is overly frozen and in bar form) in sugar panko and flash fry it - just a couple of seconds in super hot oil - it cooks the panko to a crisp, but leaves the ice cream completely frozen.)

Huh, that does sound kind of plausible. I guess that's fair.

The point is that you can use less sugar to have the same sweetening effect than a given amount of HFCS.

Yet.
>>
>>52202974
No, it's just that HFCS is super cheap compared to sugar, so companies have been putting tons of it into everything, creating a sweetness arms race which leaves the american tastebuds unable to stand anything that isn't pumped full of cheap corn sugar.

shockingly, in the time before freezers and refrigerators, people just planned further ahead

Its also how they remained fed during the winter despite there being not fast food chains in pre-modern times

They're called Soda Jerks. Technically the term for the actual guy who mixed up the soda flavors and ice cream treats, but soon became a common term for the counter that sold them. They could be a shop in themselves, but were often in drug stores and comic shops and the like.

I live in Rural Fuckville USA and the even shittier next town over from me still has a Soda Jerk in the Pioneer Pharmacy that's been there for 70ish years.
