I hate this logic. If you hand wave problems with your universe, it's a shit universe and you're a shit world builder. Any good fictional universe needs to be one thing and one thing: internally consistent. That universe can be absolutely retarded. It can have a race of hermaphroditic anthropomorphic ponies that reproduce through the consumption of small balls of dirt; that's fine. So long as three books later you don't have a shemale horse shit out a baby without eating any dirt and tell me that it's a fantasy story, it doesn't have to make sense.

Reading fiction is entering into an unspoken agreement with the author- he lays out the rules, and then he tells a story abiding by them. If a story isn't internally consistent, it kills all suspense or tension. As Brandon Sanderson wrote:

"An author’s ability to solve conflict with magic is DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL to how well the reader understands said magic."

If you're going to break with your universe's internal logic, why even bother? Just tell me the heroes win and the bad guys die, who gives a fuck how it happened if they don't have to work for it.

they're telling you to keep away from D&D because they've played too many games with online randies and not enough with irl friends who get enjoyment from simply doing things with friends.

too many autists and not enough true irl adventuring companions = miserable experience. D&D is simply the most well known and widely played game, so it gets the blame for bad gaming habits.

Pretty much this. It's kind of like how Call of Duty can be fun if you just wanna have a night with friends.

Though I also wish irl friends had the same ideas about what to bring to a game that I did. So many are more stats focused.

Fires are getting huge regardless of their origin. Increased fire load doesn't care if it's coming from lightning or a cigarette. What's more, the natives were burning for only God know show long before people (particularly the Spaniards) made them stop. Fire is necessary, and the source isn't the important part. In fact, human-set fires are arguably better since if they're set intentionally, they can be planned for and fuel loads can be modified where necessary.

>Play D&D with IRL friends weekly across 2 different editions (3.5 and 5)
>Can see glaring flaws in the design philosophy and keeping legacy mechanics around
>Even normie friends sometimes comment things like "what the hell is up with HP and AC? They don't really make much sense"
>Every attempt to do anything outside of kitchen sink setting sword and sorcery fails utterly

D&D is a fine system for doing what it lays out for you. Which is a kind of gonzo high powered game of heroes. Which is great, lots of people like doing that. D&D, however, is pretty awful at doing anything else.

/tg/ often tells people complaining about problems inherent to D&D to not play D&D because those problems are baked into the system. /tg/ tells anyone trying to play something that D&D doesn't do well, like: horror, modern, low magic, or anything with 3 dimensions, to not play D&D because there are other systems that do those things better, often with less rules.
There are people out there who will desperately try to bolt on solutions or mechanics to D&D in order to make it play something it isn't made for. Those people would almost always be better off just playing a different system.

Thats probably true. I admit that post is entirely informed by experience with 3.5 and 5e, with a tiny sprinkling of anecdotes from 4e.

I'm fairly certain that the criticism of "D&D does what it was designed to do, and not much else" still stands. As it does for every specialized system. I wouldn't try to run sword and sorcery in Eclipse Phase any more than I would try to run post human science fiction in D&D, much as I'm sure someone has tried.
>>
>>52164700

Yep, you're pretty on point there. He was just pointing out that "what D&D was designed to do" has changed over the years -- back in the early days it was more a tactical dungeon crawling company of tomb robbers game than a high-flying fantasy hero storytime game.
Honestly modern D&D isn't even that good at what it's designed for.

I gotta say, Samurai Jack gives me life. I always go in for martials in TTRPGs, but they always end up either underpowered as shit or pulling some wushuu blade magic shit where they can make wind blades with a swing of their sword. Where's my preternaturally skilled warriors who can cut down dozens of enemies in a round or slice a robot in half?

>>52164700

I recommend giving 2e a try, there's a reason it had a lot of settings *COUGH COUGH RAVENLOFT* that just didn't make the transition well into 3.0/3.5- the feel of the game changed entirely.

Oh, and you're absolutely right, D&D in general- and D20 by extension, the "fighting and maybe crafting" system that it is- is very much designed for one thing and good at it(... usually good at it).

Thing is, any system that ISN'T specialized always comes out pretty crap(GURPS, for example, or the aforementioned D20) because instead of building mechanics around the feel and aesthetic of the world they want to make, they end up having to build mechanics to suit ANY aesthetic and feel.

Fantasycraft is not making a good impression right off the bat. "versatile" is not typically a phrase I like to hear bandied about when discussing TTRPGs. "Versatile" in this case mostly means the mechanics can be adjusted, see the section on Campaign Qualities. They're basically like prepackaged, well-tested houserules to shift the playstyle to suit your game world. Like you can make it grittier by adding some of the stuff like Bleak Heroes or Deadly Combat, or remove magic just by declaring no Sorcery and No Miracles (or the Indifferent Universe rule), or make things crazier with the Monty Haul or Wire-Fu rules.

4e. D&D 4e.
Where Martial Power, drawn from extensive training experience and constantly pushing mortal limits, is just as valid as arcane or divine or psionic drawn strength. Where you CAN make strikes which deal debilitating blows to hordes of enemies, and combat is balanced with many monsters that literally have 1hp and are meant to be slain in your heroic efforts that will still contribute to fucking your shit up if you let them through by only paying attention to the "strong" enemies.

"You manifest shrieking spirits as you strike your enemy. While the spirits remain, your foes can't bring themselves to rush your allies."

>>
>>52169657
The Ejection Port is facing away from him.
>>
>>52169694
Still, could it harm another person?

In a low gravity enviroment the case could fling pretty far away, I guess, and in a low pressure atmosphere would keep the high temperature for a longer or shorter time?

Do bullets even work in the almost vacuum?

Would the gun need to be sealed to work properly and the cases need to be collected to avoid unwanted heated scrap metal be thrown around?

xD shit, why am I wondering about all this shit based on that one picture?
>>
>>52170085
One: Space suits are typically designed to survive micro-meteoroid strikes and crazy high temps, so unlikely.

Two: Bullets provide their own fuel and oxidizer and remain in a sealed barrel for most of their acceleration, so yes.

Three: Almost all firearms work in a vacuum because of two, unless they rely on gas pressure to cycle the action without a hard seal, so maybe.

Four: I have no idea.
>>
>>52170085
>>52170291
The real problem with using firearms in space is recoil. Newton's an asshole. The good news is that guns were designed during the cold war to overcome it using specialized ammunition. These rounds were essentially tiny rockets, continuing to accelerate for several feet after leaving the barrel of the weapon and thus reducing the recoil felt by the shooter.

Firing a gun on the moon would present fewer problems due to the astronaut having ground to help them, but I could see the reduced gravity still altering the feel of firing the weapon.

I think he's talking about the nitpicking that people do.

Saying "Why doesn't Superman just go back in time again?" is a perfectly reasonable critique for the old movies, and an example of writing into a corner.

Saying "How the hell does Superman fool anyone with the Clark Kent glasses?" is ridiculous, because it's a part of the setting that Clark might be a big guy with a square jaw, but Superman? That guy's a milquetoast doormat: He couldn't WRITE Superman, much less be a hero.

It's the difference between suspension of disbelief and tolerance of plotholes.
>>

Brilliant strategie.
That's so dumb, the enemy would not see it coming.

They still have uses in dangerous areas. There'll never be a captain that will regret having a local contact who knows what's up with the shallows.
>>
>>52170602
LotR movies are superior to the hobbit trilogy.
>>
>>52175206
Yeah but the captains aren't actually the ones paying for that. There's a reason that actual lighthouses are pretty much all abandoned now.
>>
>>52175209

Does anybody really dispute that?
>>
>>52164138
Who said that?
>>
>>52170849

To be honest, if they had waited until the initial charge broke on the wall, they'd have fresh skirmishers counter-charging bogged down infantry, with a solid back-line to retreat to.

But why be pragmatic when you can be dramatic?

>muh fantasy movie is unrealistic

on /tg/ of all places i didn't expect that
elf walking on falling rocks is rule of cool
>>
>>52175374

Ah, the barrel riding scene as it was meant to be: a cool video game sequence. I'm sure if Tolkien had known what a cool video game was, he wouldn't have made it so boring when he wrote it in his stupid book.
>>
>>52175409
That's not rule of cool. If you get some anime shit like jumping off of fallen bullets, that's rule of cool. Hopping up something that's collapsing is a normal thing that can happen in real life, and there's nothing wrong with the concept. The concept doesn't even need the justification of "rule of cool", it's realistic already. If you can't make it look right, that's just poor craftsmanship.

I'll admit that i like the second hobbit movie, especially the barrel scene. And I don't hate the first film. But by the emperor is the third film shit. From the acting, to the directing, to the CGI. Even the other movies had shitty CGI scenes, only good one was Smaug. Just look at the orcs, and the fucking horse of all things! why did you CG a horse?

>>52175206
That's what pilots are for, and they are paid by the port authority, typically the state port authority in burgerland.

It's really a shame lighthouses are all but abandoned here. There are a lot of historic preservation initiatives that do a deccent job of at least maintaining the lighthouses, but very few are functional anymore.
>>

>the end result is amazing when you consider how young it is
No it's not, the CGI is actually conspicuously bad because they utterly fuck the movement up. I didn't like some of the designs but never saw a problem with the actual CGI til i watched them, it just utterly ruins the films.
