More work done on these lads.
Only got 'em at two colors right now and they're still blu-tacked together. Oh well, once I get the Leadbelcher on as my third color I'll have a nice tabletop standard!

Shitposting aside, the fucking Chaplain's arm won't stay on. Anyone else ever have their plastic glue just turn the whole site gummy? It's really annoying and I haven't figured out what causes it. The glue works fine most of the time, bu sometimes it just won't bond things and it just melts the whole contact site to gum.
>>

>WIP thread
Finally.

I've been working on my chapter's models for a bit now, making decent progress. I've only run into one issue so far- the chapter's Chaplains and Librarians are merged into a single position of Confessor. I'm just gonna run them as Librarians on the tabletop, but I'm looking at how to actually get that merged role across in the model without confusing people too badly. Right now I'm considering starting with a DA Interrogator Chaplain with symbols/etc filed off and both arms replaced, with a force stave and bolt pistol. That still seems very Chaplain-y to me, though, and if I'm running them as straight Librarians, well...

Any suggestions? All of my modeled force except one Techmarine is in Mk3 armor (I had Mk4 biker parts so I got the techmarine to match), so I'd like to stay a little consistent with that theme. FW pricing is no object.

inb4 the same guy that complained the first time I posted this complains again
I've only got the one completed/painted model right now, everything else is either in the mail or in varying states of assembly/priming. Shoulderpads here actually need to be repainted once I decide whether I want to keep them black or go to green. I'm going for a sort of "knight in shining armor" aesthetic with them; bright Leadbelcher with a lighter touch of Nuln than usual, gold trim, etc. Drawing from Celtic mythology a bit in chapter background, including Arthurian myth. Other aesthetic draws, more evident on incomplete models, are elements of Taghmata Mechanicum and other 30k artifacts, plus a small dose of metalworking in the rank names and the vehicles.

Yes, it probably looks like Iron Warriors; I'd say it looks a little closer to Mk3 Astral Claws.

Believe it or not, it actually does have a wash on the Nuln parts, and this is after trying a Reikland Fleshshade wash on the gold and seeing it not look all that great. Highlights, still not great at without totally fucking up the model, so I haven't gone for them on this one yet, barring the sword.

Is it great, nah. Am I a great painter in the first place? Also nah.

It's been awhile and had to take a break from painting. But I got back working on my Baal Pred today and got the main gun done. All I need to do now is finish up the Marine using the mounted Storm Bolter and complete the Heavy Bolter Sponsons. Also no clue why it looks so dusty in the pic.
>>
>>52100051
Oh hey dude. I remember giving you pointers and shit a few weeks ago. I know how it can feel for a model to inexplicably look dusty as shit, but ignoring that it looks pretty solid. Your work on the lenses is fucking top tier. It looks beat to fuck, so if that's what you're going for, you achieved it.

First attempt with an airbrush. This is much harder than I thought. I really don't understand how people achieve that crazy color depth. Also any tips for keeping the highlight from looking so powdery and dull? It was menoth white highlight at it's brightest.

Please ignore the mold lines, this was a free marine a shop owner gave me to practice the airbrush on.
>>
>>52100266
Thanks a lot dude. It feels good hearing that but still have a ways to go. I want to fix up them lights, they look off. But I figured out why it looks dusty. I used a sponge to lightly press on some Burnt Umber and Leadbelcher for the chipping effect. Turns out the light reflected off the tiny dots of Leadbelcher and gave it that weird dust effect.

Makes sense. I had a similar problem with the interior of my chimera. It was a little more extreme since the interior was basecoated black. Would always do double-takes thinking I got white on it somehow.

I see what you mean on the lights. They're a little flat. Personally I haven't actually dealt with that style of light, so I'm not really sure what to say there, other than maybe try another sort of geming lens effect for each of the individual sections separated by the metal cage.

Beyond that my only criticism is that an off-white or grey color for the highlights on a solid red like that makes it look sort of... worn, to me. In the sense that the actual model is worn. It's probably just personal taste, since I know other people highlight in that sort of way.

I dry brushed the highlights with Kindleflame. I see what you mean about it looking off but it's cause of the really shitty lighting. I tried to take a better pic to show this. I really need to make my own light box and get a program to adjust the light of my photos.

Looks good enough for table top quality. That Dark Angels symbol on his left pauldron looks hand panted, really nice. Some of the pant in some areas looks too thick and you could of made for some brighter contrast in the cloth. Not bad though.

So I'm really interested in Tzeentch and the Thousand Sons and I think I want to collect them.

Which daemons are good to start with? I asked about Tzaangors and Rubric Marines last thread but didn't get any replies. GW had a video on Rubric Marines and they seemed kind of hard, but the Tzaangor one was just the flesh and not the other parts.

Also are there Khornegors, Nurglegors, or Slaaneshgors as well? Didn't find any of them on GW website.

Robes look like they could use another coat of the pre-wash color on the raised areas, especially with that patch on top of the hood that didn't get washed. I'd go around the rune thingy on his force sword with either a thinned black or nuln oil to clean it up. Ad some lighter silver to the gold you used and use the mix to highlight his sword and his Librarium skulls.
And if you've got access to some brush-on primer or gesso, hit up his left foot with it and cover that patch of bare metal. From my experience that usually came from holding the mini and my thumb rubbing shit off while painting, so I'd advice getting some Blue-Tak or similar sticky putt and sticking the mini to a wine or champagne cork so you can hold onto that instead.

>>52102723
Yeah, he seems to be. You'll need to do a fair amount of sawing to fix those abs. The head assembly slots firmly into place as well so you'll need to file down the edges if you want him looking another way.

There's conversion potential, but you'll have to work for it. Arms are ostensibly mono pose too, but socketed so you can file and pin them if you're that way inclined.

>>52103294
I feel you. I remember seeing a model with large portions of the trim painted blue as well, which looked way less garish. Might replicate, but I'll see how he looks primed, first.

Oh, and big E's sword is a single piece with the hand sculpted to the grip. Easy fix with a file and some work, if you wanted to use it for conversions or buy a recast of the piece

I get the feel both armies are something weird inside the Imperium and Chaos.
Sons are traitor by necessity and they are more or less reasonable.
Some of the DA successors seem more level-headed that 99% of the Imperium (mainly Guardians of the Covenant which I play, and Angels of Redemption).
Fallen are the inbetween.

I'm actually painting this same model now and on my test guy (a deathwatch vet) I did what duncan suggested in his vid to spruce up the deathwatch arm: a glaze of guilliman blue thinned with lahmian medium on the raised areas ends up looking very nice.

I'll try and post pictures tomorrow, I just wanted to pass on that tidbit.

The best thing about metal models is that they are easy to strip. One of the reasons (aside from rising metal prices) GW moved away from them is probably the huge second hand market due to this.
Anyway. Just strip them if you are unhappy.

I don't know if there's actually anything wrong with your paint; some of those older GW metals don't look nearly as good with the nostalgia goggles off (I'm noting the detail looks fine on the ammo feed and her pauldrons). It could be you just got a pull from the end of the mold's life and the gun details are just naturally sort of soft.

Painting an excelsior warpriest for a local contest lol.
I participated just for fun and also because the contest costs 12 dollars and even if you lose you get to keep the mini.

Keep in mind it's my 9th miniature ever, and I painted almost only skeletons until now.

Looks nice enough as-is. If you're going for the classic retro GW style you need to use inks for shading and colour depth. I'd also suggest making the yellow a more vibrant shade and using an orange-red on the gloves instead of brown. The nose and teeth look nice and the beard is acceptable if a little drab.

This lad is on the right track. Prime the model black, then paint a thin coat of white over the parts that will become yellow. That's what I did, and it worked out OK. You can see here between the third and fourth shot of the model how I changed my mind, deciding the greaves should be yellow after all.

There is a clear difference between flat and gritty.
As >>52104358 mentions, your dread looks "dull" in lack of a better term. See, our goal as hobbyists is to give life to the miniatures we paint. We achieve this by adding depth and highlights, and by doing so we enhance the features of said model.
That being said, painting flat dark colors on its own has nothing to do with looking grimderp and gritty. This is what you use weathering to achieve.

A nice looking army, congrats. Are you selling it or keeping it? I'm not sure the osl works very well, it just seems too obviously airbrushed and needs more thought and I'm not a fan of the cork board under the bases, but the infantry look really nice.

I've finally figured out the paint-scheme I'm going to use for my Steel Confessors. This marine on my right is my go-to scheme now, as he looks and feels very satisfying. I based the scheme off of a picture of their golden-daemon winning chapter master. And although I don't have the skills to freehand such delicate iconography on their armour, I can still use the colour set. What do you guys think?

> Prime in Chrome
> Wash everything but the pauldrons with Drakenhof Nightshade

I have an easy trick to make the steel parts look nicer, without having to do stupid shit like clean up the Drakenhof Nightshade where it gets swirly because it pooled over flat surfaces.

Either use Forge World's Grey Knight Silver paint which is literally a silver paint that also looks very slightly blue like 'Eavy Metal's GK models have, or gloss varnish after the silver stage. The gloss method will work even better if GW releases a Gloss Drakenhof Nightshade.

After you achieve a cleaner blue-steel look, you can experiment with making the models more interesting by layering other silvers on top, drybrushing with Necron Compound or another silver, or experimenting with Agrax Earthshade before or after the blue wash.

If the goal is to have a blue steel look and not just blue shadows on the silver, I highly recommend FW's Grey Knight Silver or swapping out Drakenhof Nightshade for Guilliman Blue glaze.

I'd slap some yellow on the "teeth" on the right (for us, his left) choppa. Those are things that should stand out rather than fade back, so your accent color will probably serve better than a plain black.

You should work on painting neater. The metal on the blade there doesn't reach the hilt, the "teeth" in front of the grot are likewise only partially painted, plenty of silver stains on the ork's left hand.

Dark red lenses for the ork's goggles perhaps? The yellow cap kinda overpower them, and we want attention to the eyes.

Still, a decent enough overall impression. The flaws feel mroe like specific issues holding things back than parts of an overall "meh".

How do I Varnish models that have already been flocked? Brush only?

>>
>>52108601

Don't use shit spray brands like Citadel Purity Seal or Armory

Don't spray like a retard when it's raining or the air is fucking 99% humidity

Usually people flock AFTER varnishing, but if it's already flocked you can try lighter varnish coats aimed above knee level, or try to mask off the flocked base with a card or something to block the spray

Brush on varnish is garbage and will either be so thin it doesn't do its job, or too thick and will obscure detail. Airbrush and spray can only. You will never see a good painter tell you to brush on varnish over the whole model, they always airbrush it or spraycan.

>>
>>52109262
Very nice, man.
>>
>>52109634
I personally love their Metal Color line, far more reflective metallic colours, especially on their gloss primer. Though colour variety could be a bit better, it's mainly aimed at the aircraft modelling crowd so it's 2 dozen tints of silver (and burned silver) with a copper and gold.

But if silver tones are what you need, then it has lots of options.
>>
>>52109709

That's my problem with Metal Color. Too many silvers I don't even know which one to pick, and only one gold and copper both of which are wrong for me (copper too red, gold too pale). The dark silvers are great, not a lot of companies doing gunmetal and dark silver.
>>
>>52107379
i was about to say this.
>>
>>52109745
My Go-To for the Metal Color silvers is Duraluminium, which is a bit of a mid-tone silver, it works rather well as a base for AL marines.
I agree with you though, it's 15 silvers (from very dark to really bright) and the gold and copper, perhaps a bit overkill on the silver choices, but for aircraft modelling I've seen a lot of them used on even single naked metal models, which clearly is their target market.
>>
>>52108540
I bought their mounted Krieg commissar proxy. Quality of casting was perfect, quality of sculpting is worse than FW but not bad. No problems undercoating or painting.
On a side note, female models in 28mm seems to have to choose between being dudes in drag ala SoB metals or look a bit off in scale when stood next to a GW model.

I'm not too big on the shade of green. The blue armor and red eye look breddy ok, but the green really clashes with the rest of the model imo. You might want to start off with a much darker green then highlight with the bright shade you have now. It'll make it stand out a lot less.

Well I have a light form of dyslexia and severe problems with informational intake and learning, I still have a college degree. I might not have much of a diagnose on me it just means I have to push harder than most to get what I want.

So believe me when I say this, diagnose or not, we all have a hard time to spend time. Its in our time that everything should be done in a fast phase. And this hobby takes on a lot of it.
Every time you sit down for a session, is a opportunity to test your limits, put on a good film, or some good tutorials or such. Don't focus on finish a model in one go, try and finish a set PART of a model, or sometimes just finish one color on a model. When you tire, just put it away, and pick up where you stopped next session. In the long run, you will grow as a painter.

Thanks for the actual advice, rather than just haplessly insulting my painting. This is what criticism should be, not just "LOL YOUR PAINT IS SHIT". Yea, I'm trying to go for blue-steel, since the effect is mimicking the real-world "bluing" method of deliberately tarnishing steel in a benign way, that protects it from more serious tarnishing.

Normally on weapons I do this by using a stipple-brush of a metal highlight after very heavily washing with drakenhof, rather than an overal layering. And after looking up some examples of Blu-metal, I think having some dark pooling might be actually good to have.

My Necron Compound is absolutely shite, it somehow turned into a strange gellatin blob/slime as opposed to paste that most normal dry materials are. It's totally useless on models.

I'm using Guilliman blue glaze as a prep-area for doing glow effects on the power fists. But I'll give it a try as a recess shade.

Can one of you guys help me find a metallic paint that's close to the shininess of the gold paint the guys over at forgeworld use for their Custodes shit?
I'm pretty damn sure it's not GW. I'm thinking it's some Tamiya colour, since it's not unheard of of them to use that brand.

So I want a Repressor, but I don't want to pay $200+ for one. Is it possible to kit bash one into existence?

Will do.

Well, I think it's also because I also have studies to tend to as well. So I rather not dwell too long on painting minis at the moment.

But I agree with your sentiment that I probably should put in more effort and improve.

That looks good. After a while you will get better at the highlights and manage to do them more straight and neat, and thinner, and they will really look awesome, so keep doing what you're doing so the practice makes you faster and neater and more precise. Where you are at is not bad at all.

Just finished three third party rapier lasers for my Nurgle Renegades and Heretics.

I need to convert some suitable crew now. I've got an unbuilt squad of Cadians to work with - can anyone recommend 3rd party bits to turn them into artillery crew? I've got three quad mortars to build and convert and do crew for as well!

Any Nurgly renegade conversion ideas would be happily appreciated as it goes.

Pig Iron have a bunch of minis that would work as nurgle cultists/renegade IG.
I think they are called ferals or something like that. Wearing robes and gasmask heads. The heads are bits you can get separately.

For heavy weapon arms the only ones I think of that come separately are from victoria miniatures. Anvil Industry is another company I'd check out though. They've been pumping out a lot of new releases lately.

Alternately you could look into crewmen from Urban War or Gates of Antares as conversion fodder by Scotia Grendel/Warlord games.
