Whenever specific Guard regiments get written about it's because they're so cool and awesome (Cadians / Tanith 1st / whatever) or because they are the most grim dark things imaginable (penal legions).

I can't really find any regular Imperial Guard regiments that just suck dick. Always just mentioned in passing as "a Guard regiment did a frontal charge and all got wiped out rip"

So what are some regiments that just do human wave attacks or just suck otherwise? Wanna know for some writing.
>>
>>52087321
Valhallans do a lot of human wave tactics to the point where they're infamous for them, but even they get the hero treatment in the Ciaphas Cain books.
>>
>>52087353
I think that's because Sandy Mitchell ignored the moderately racist existing lore and wrote his own fluff for them.
>>
>>52087353
Yeah Sandy Mitchell sort of undid that.

Trying to have a Commissar talk about good and bad regiments he's been in, for good I have some random Cadian one because of course, but I'm struggling to find actually useless cannon fodder ones for the opposite.
>>
Any that follow Zap's big book of war.
>>
>>52087417
would be amazing if someone modeled a guard army after the zap's army complete with retro looking winding guns
>>
>>52087353
Commander Chenkov may send lots of men to die but he gets shit done.
>>
>>52087417
So Forgeworld Death Korps then?
>>
>>52087461
Oh god that'd be glorious.
Maybe even have s few ball and OP8 minis to represent the aliens they fought too?
>>
>>52087556
It is easy to send to their death men who do not will to live.
True leadership is doing it with men who want to live.
>>
>>52087556
>You kriegs will be trained to make your beds until you can make them in your sleep

In the fluff almost every story involving Elysians involves them getting fucked over.
>>
I like to think that the Scintillan Fusiliers are all talk.
>>
>>52089881
I'd like to agree as well, but apparently they're all combined arms units and I have to assume that anyone with the level of gear they have can do SOMETHING. Besides, if they're all talk now, we'll see who lives after the fourth masses ork charge and they'll do better

Just make some up then. It's a big imperium, and in all honesty, it's pretty likely that nobody has heard of the real loser regiments.

This.

>>52090364
Nah. They hold a motherfucking line like nobody's business and don't afraid of no dark.
>>
>>52090466
Never taking cover is retarded.
>>
>>52087321
What about the Zathras Legion? You could have your commissar talk about the endless parade of stupid questions he got, no matter how many of them he shot, there were always more.
>>
Tradition dictates that the regiments that use the most modernized, sensible tactics instead of going full retard tend to end up losing.

Seems like Forge World takes a shining to the phrase "kill your darlings." Everything they put out gets fucked up in their stories. Elysians suffer crushing defeat in every book, Death Korps LIVE grinding, horrific war, handfuls of minor characters get offed every IA book, even the Red Scorpions eat it a good deal of times, and in the newest IA book it looks like Karab Kulln eats it, too, since he's been revealed to be the new occupant of a Leviathan Dreadnought.

Then there's the Raptors who also eat it a lot, sometimes alongside Elysians. This seems to form a pattern where in the grimdarkness of the year 40,000, contemporary tactics and common-sense approaches to military doctrine get you killed, so you might as well just pick up that stormshield and thunder-hammer and give it your best warcry because that's all that gets anything done nowadays in this backwards-ass Imperium.
>>
>>52090867
could be, gw has a weird thing where all their planets that aren't based on a UK territory are usually shittier.
>>
>>52090867
THESE.

THESE GUYS ARE UPPER-CLASS TWATS AT THEIR FINEST (AKA: WORST). Their regiment exists solely to produce new officers for the Imperial Guard and that's that.

They're noblemen though, I think GW is taking a shot at the French given the style of their dress
>>
>>52090867
These are very obviously inspired by the pre-revolution French, not revolutionary America.

It's even obvious in their fluff, they're all nobility twats
>>
>>52090486
You're retarded. Be stylish or be dead.
>>
>>52090959
I dunno, but if someone kept bragging about how "my childhood was tougher than this" when the conditions are objectively shit, it's not gonna always foster goodwill.
>>
Death Korps are just shittier versions of the Steel Legion. Should just have them folded into the Legion as rearguard defensive elements.
>>
>>52090962
Blame Warp fuckery. The Imperium (and everyone but the pansy Tau) believes melee combat to be superior and more glorious, so it is.
>>
>>52090388
Exactly; terrible regiments might get wiped out so quickly noone ever knew they arrived on tbe front line.

Before long a new regiment is raised on thier home world, recycling thier number and traditons, hopefully not emulating thier ineptness.

Are you guys not aware that pre revolutionary France essentially made the american revolution possible by sending great officers (Lafayette to name but one) and ships and supplies and everything you can think of, just to spike the brits?

Like when the Tanith 1st and Only, despite being a recon specialist force, is usually forced to fight on the frontlines, and even were stuck in trench warfare for a bit, and still get shit done?
>>
>>52095615
Perfectly aware, that doesn't change that the regiment is modeled more after the French than revolutionary Americans. They're not the same thing. That's like saying the DKoK are modeled after Chile because Germany supplied the Chilean army.
>>
>>52095681
Fighting on the front lines means they at least of tanks and such in the area. Paratroopers means light armor, very limited supplies and being encircled and destroyed if your allies are too stupid/unable to reinforce you. See: Market Garden

Sure, about halfway through the actual war, and they stayed pretty much entirely in the Yankee north while Appalachians basically went full WAAAGH!!! and killed everybody who wasn't them, Loyalist and Patriot alike.

I'm not saying France wasn't important, but they also weren't the sole reason the Americans won either.

There were really four "American Revolutions," going on simultaneously, and the two in New Netherlands and the Deep South failed pretty hard.

>>skilled and disciplined paratroopers
>>LOL WHAT DO THEY NEED ARMOR AND ARTILLERY SUPPORT FOR LET'S JUST SEND THOSE ELEMENTS TO SIT IN A TRENCH
>This goes without saying but GW is filled with hacks

Give them some credit, though. It's entirely plausible that a Lord Commander would put the wrong types of soldiers in the wrong places because he simply doesn't care or because he wants to give his pet regiments the cushiest/lucrative positions instead.
>>
>>52098619
It's also entirely plausible that a Lord Commander will get blammed if he tries to pull that shit.
>>
>>52095615
Pretty much the only good thing France did for us was let Lafayette come over. Everything else was minuscule; France had enough trouble on the Continent and was only offering to help because it'd fuck over her rival England.
>>

>an IG regiment based on the Afrika Korps

>>52095650
This happens to real life paratroopers quite frequently. Early WWII Soviet Paratroopers, WWII American airborne in some operations et cetera
>>
>>52100126
>Early WWII Soviet Paratroopers, WWII American airborne in some operations et cetera
The earlier the paratroopers were formed, the bigger mistakes they made. Fallschirmjaegers didn't even jump with their guns.
>>
>>52091475
patria is a spanish word

Can you go on more about the other revolutions in your spoiler? Its not a time period that I know allot of and Im looking for stuff going on in those places.
>>
>>52100923
>Fallschirmjaegers didn't even jump with their guns.

Why would anyone think that sending soldiers to war without weapons was a good thing?
>>
>>52095275

Except they aren't. Great coats and rebreathers aside they are entirely different and appeal to different people. Neither is inherently superior or inferior to the other.
>>
>>52101204
They did tho, to the point of declaring bankruptcy after. And making the atlantic a very uncomfortable place for British ships.
>>
>>52087321
>>52090388

The thing is that any actual useless guard regiment would never graduate beyond being a PDF. Sending these grunts into space isn't cheap, so if you're going to do it, you need to send someone who at least knows the right direction to point his lasgun.
>>
For some inspiration in making your own shit up here's a real life example of Worst Military Ever

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_William_D._Porter_%28DD-579%29

Notable events include dropping a depth charge off the side of your ship and making everyone think there's a submarine, and accidentally firing a live torpedo at the flagship of the Navy, while the President is onboard.
>>
>>52090486
Taking cover only slows down your firing. If your fighting against enemies whose weapons ignore cover, or whose ranged firepower is far less important than their melee prowess, taking cover is a liability.

Sad to say, but Death Korps of Kreig. They make a point to ensure no one stays alive long enough to gain any sort experience and they deliberately use tactics that are less effective just to take more casualties.
>>
>>52101009
Patria is most likely the latin word for homeland, home-city
>>
>>52087321

There is a regiment in "Treacheries of the Space Marines" anthology that tries to have their honorable last stand against Typhus but they just get swat like flies (pun intended)

They are described many times as being just a dull fucking imperial guard regiment, with no infamy or great tragedy besmirching their standard, but no great victories or rolls of honor either.

Thing is, I don't remember their name.

See, that;s the thing OP. Why would such a regiment as you describe be remembered? We remember heroes, antiheroes or vilians, regural mooks are footnotes.
>>
>>52101692
They dropped the rifles with the men in separate cases.
>>
>>52090867
Those are French, you retard.
>>
>>52095681
Well most of Tanith's problems of being deployed in ways that they shouldn't usually always come down to plot.

Equally I'm pretty sure Abnett just has a harder time thinking up ways to actually make a compelling story about the Tanith being deployed in an actual stealth and recon role. He's pretty great when it comes to writing guard novels, but it seems like pitting light forces against strong opposition is the easier and more interesting plot than writing about a months long campaign where a small regiment systematically scouts and disables enemy supply routes while the other regiments do the action stuff.

I'd love to see a Ghosts novel about the whole regiment doing stealth recon on a war world. Currently on Traitor General. But at the same time, the role and duties of a recon/stealth regiment are vague to determine based on what else is at the warzone.
