When my bro and I flesh out our Dwarves in whatever games we come up with, we decided that women don't have beards, but the legend stems from a popular hair style.

He drew a sketch (which I wish i had) where a female braids her hair and it comes around from behind her head and tucked under her chin, and clasped in the front. So at a glance, it looks like she has a beard, but really it's just her hair braided to the front.

I like this, and I've heard something similar before.
In the world I'm building a massive beard is traditionally worn by members of the dwarven orthodox clergy, and women who reach such positions typically follow through by arranging their hair as such or wearing symbolic beards like pharaohs. Whether a member of the growingly controversial orthodox or not, such hairstyles are popular and conflated with power and leadership among dwarves.

Dwarf females are weird for me. On one hand, they can look gorgeous, and I don't even mind the idea of some facial hair - specifically sideburns, since I think those can be included to make them look different from short human women, but will still pleasingly frame the face instead of just making it look offputtingly manly.

But at the same time, there's all the art out there of dwarf women with beards. And even some of the porn out there (unbearded specifically) is just horrible, with weird proportions that just don't look pleasing to the eye. I have to continually scrape the barrel to find dwarf women that I think actually look attractive.

And honestly, no one seems to talk about them. Sure, this thread exists, but usually they're treated as a joke if anything.

Hair is the beard of the dwarf woman, but I don't like the idea of females wearing their hair like a beard. I consider male dwarves to be basically asexual (after all, gold and iron have more value than flesh and bone), albeit still quite romantic, so it makes sense that women would be the romantically dominant gender in dwarven society. And since sometimes females are significantly less common than men, I'd consider a woman's femininity to be seen as a sign of stature and, if nothing else, hold some amount of unwritten authority.
That's not to say I think dwarven society should be matriarchal, but if the only woman you've really known is your mother, you're gonna show some respect to any others you meet. So I think it's more interesting if dwarf women dress in ways that highlight their femininity without portraying desirability. Dwarf men are the ones that have to appear desirable and stand out from the multitudes of other men in the community. That's why all my dwarf characters are hyper-sexualized manlets in tight shirts.

Dwarf women are pretty great, but I also think they're just depicted as beardless dwarven men.

I like my Dwarven relationship dynamic to be very patriarchal. One sex provides for the other sex and demands mating rights, the other sex through social chicanery tries to get out of those obligations. Very Rumpelstiltskin.

Male Dwarves have their own craft, skill, and duties, female dwarves likewise have their own, and manipulate males like their brothers and husbands.

I also have in my world an emphasis on a dwarves beard. The way a dwarves beard is styled and adorned to represent their titles, achievements, and properties. As dwarven women don't have beards, they have no claim to these.

Of course, exceptions to this make things interesting, like the one dwarfhold that has a female dwarven ruler that wears a proxy beard made of gold and jewels.
