I actually got as far as the second round of Black Library's submissions window with this basic premise.

Like one cadian was gonna slightly burn his face with a hot-shot sniper round and have it become a symbol of defiance in a losing war and whatnot, but that was really just a distraction for the rest of the squad to get away.

6 months on hold before finally being rejected, six months later they blow up the planet I wanted to set a series on. Still do, but it would require a few years between losing half the planet and losing all the planet to be canon.
