Space Marines have achieved a goal that Kim Jung Un wishes he could get to. Their bodies are so efficient, they only poop once a month. And they usually poop before a battle. It takes a while for all their crippled half-naked butlers to properly oil them up and lube into their armors, plenty of time to drop some weight before a mission. However, if they've been caught unawares, or training, or whatever, and happen to be wearing their suit, it just goes everywhere.

They have recyclers, but man, the original designers just did not anticipate the toll a space marine's bowel extrusion would have on the equipment, and the recyclers fail before the second turd. It just squeezes between the suit gel-padding layer and the black carapace with every step. It's the real reason Raven Guard marines go silent, when you note that they spend more extended time in the field than any of their brothers.

Be careful about how thick the colours are and how carefully you apply them, I think the differences in how you apply them can make a difference in tone in a way that's quite noticeable for skin tones.

Imperial Guard is probably the best of the swarm armies, so to speak. Orks and Tyranids can bring a lot of dudes, but they're lackluster.

For a really elite force, it depends how far you're willing to go. A Space Marine army can have a pretty low model count, or you could go all out and run something like Imperial Knights where you've only got 3 giant robots on the table and nothing else.

Question: do dedicated transports benefit from the special rules of their attached unit? Havocs with Tank Hunters makes it possible to plasma vomit tanks to death, but if the Rhino doesn't benefit from it, it may as well use its combo-plasma on something else, or I may swap it out for a meltagun.

Army-wise the Warpsmith footslogs hiding behind the dread, repairing any damage and hopefully granting it IWND. They get cover fire from the Rapier which should attract anything that was considering firing at the lonely IC the moment it spits out a S10 pieplate. Autocannon squad camp an objective and cover Warp/dread team as best they can, or simply dakka anything within 24". The two Rhinos and Predator blitzkrieg the rest of the table.

The only reason you'd take pay the Chaos Warband taxes is for the Grand Company rules, which are only apply to Fortifications and Barrage weapons, neither of which are particularly useful. They're aimed at bigger games where you can take a formation of Fortifications as an Aux slot and nail down a chunk of your army as an immovable object. At that level you'd have the budget to take an Allied Detachment with a Sorcerer HQ, some Obliterator Troops and the Rapiers.

I'm starting a Tau army, and I don't really want to engage in MC spam because there's quite a few non-competitive players in our group. As such, I'd like a bit of input of the force I'm considering running. I'd like it to be quite nasty, but not immune to the kind of force Space Marines, Chaos Marines and other mid-tier factions can put out. So far I've got:

Three squads of Fire Warriors, ten in each with a DS8 Support turret, running smart missiles.
Two three-man Crisis Teams, all armed with two Fusion Guns per model and thruster upgrades for Hit & Run and Fleet. These will be deep-striking in Termicide fashion.
A commander with Iridium Suit, stim injecters, a shield generator and twin fusion guns. Probably deep striking with a Crisis Team.
Two Hammerhead Gunships, running sub-munitions, disruptor pods and smart missiles. One has the Longstrike tank commander for BS5, tank hunter and supporting fire.
Three teams of Pathfinders, five man each with markerlights.
Maybe a squad or two of Kroot for bubble wrapping so I don't get charged.
One to three Broadsides, still deciding on the missiles or the railgun for the main weapon
An Aegis Defence Line.

Basic idea is the fire warriors, broadsides, hammerheads and Kroot make a static gunline. Pathfinders sit in the forest/ruins/somewhere high and mark targets. Shoot things till they die, then DS the Crisis Teams in and kill their tanks/MCs. Pretty basic strat, but hopefully a rather potent one.
Since I;ve only played as Tau once with another person's army, I'm unsure on how to field drones. I know they make good, cheap wound soakers, but I don't know whether to run marker drones, shield drones or gun drones. I'm also still iffy on the proper way to use markerlights, and how to synergize squads with them.

First, I will say that full gunline Tau isn't a very exciting way to play. It basically boils down to whether or not you can blow up enough of their units before they get into charge range and tear you apart.

Aside from that, I will say that Marker drones tend to be the best option. Shield drones soak wounds marginally better, but that's a bit wasteful, and the gun drones tend to not be as worth it.

The key thing I would say is to play a bit more forward to help keep things interesting.

Semi-tax. Depends on your army. Ostensibly you kit them out with combo-weapons and some CC options, shove your Lord on a bike and away you go. But that's really fucking boring and has been the CSM meta since before Traitor Legions. Warband is nice if you did have the minis from a metabuild, but otherwise it involves buying new shit and dedicating a significant chunk of points into what's basically a beatstick to throw at the enemy with little to no army synergy. Obsec means they can actually help the rest of your army, though, so I'll have to re-evaluate things.

Official Kill Team, you pick units from troops, elites, and fast attack as normal, and then split them up into squads.

Heralds of Ruin, you pick a Sergeant type character to serve as a sort of warlord, then have core and auxillary choices that you pick model by model. Overall, the limits are the same, but for HoR you could have a team that was a Veteran seargeant, two tacticals, a terminator, and a biker, for example.

Anyone else feel that Tau lack that punch that other armies have? Playing yesterday and my riptide wing took 2 turns to remove a 10 man GK paladin squad even though I pay a premium for the riptides and paladins are cheap as chips.

Hell, Chaos get a standard troop with AP3 shooting and yet i'm stuck at AP5 what gives?
I propose making Tau WS1 BS1 in exchange for AP3 standard shooting like the so called "underpowered" chaos gets, that way we are on par with them and can try to be competitive in high end games instead of falling behind with our underwhelming shooting phase like we do now.

I know this is a bait post but you're actually right.
Tau's a shooty army, but the whole codex is BS3.
You need to burn multiple markerlights just to get on par with other codex's BS. Can you name another codex where literally (actually literally) every single unit comes with a tax in the form of several other units? You can't just slap a single Pathfinder squad in, either. You need multiple Drone units in a formation, or several Tetras, just so your shooty army shoots as well as BS5 Aspect Eldar (which are also choppy and weirdy), and that's only while the markerlights live (they won't live long).
You have great anti-vehicle options in the form of fucking 18" meltas, but your anti-blob options come in the form of singular BS3 small blasts at Elite-choice prices. Meanwhile, you don't have any blobs of your own outside of Kroot, which, at T3 6+, you might as well not even field.
The codex also lacks D weapons outside of the Stormsurge (which, surprise, is also at BS3 despite being a LoW AND it needs even more markerlights to actually get to D), so things like Wraithknights or other Stormsurges or non-IDable HQ/Elite options don't have a reasonable in-codex counter.

I mean, there's a reason Tau doesn't perform amazingly well in tournaments despite literally being the codex with the Riptide in it.

Also, I'm not seeing any reason why you can't apply 1KS to that detachment, so keep that in mind. There's no reason not to take advantage of +1 invul and Tzeentch artifacts.

I can agree with some of this, but you have to pay the price somewhere for being the most versatile codex in the entire game. There's literally no list in the game that a tau couldn't list tailor to stomp. Plenty of codexes will have problems with specific deathstars and cheese tactics, but a prepared tau player can take on any list and mop the floor with them. Your tournament game probably suffers a bit for that over specialization, but you can't be good at everything.
