He's been doing that since PCB.

The PC-98 games had no real continuity, and most of its characters were Donut Steel level ripoffs of manga and videogames ZUN liked in college. Though this tends to fly over the head of English-speakers, because most of the things he was referencing have never been translated into English, even by scanlators.

EoSD was a fresh start where he began to make some attempts at a deeper story, but the setting of Gensokyo wasn't fully formed at the time of its release. And ZUN has a lot of regrets about how EoSD turned out. E.g. he says he was trying to be ironic by filling a game called "Eastern" with Western-themed characters, but it backfired and caused people to latch onto things that were never supposed to be the focus the series - if he had a chance to start over, he wouldn't have introduced the SDM until a few games in.

However I don't feel that Touhou is too dark or edgy, throughout the games and mangas a majority of conflicts are ended peacefully with danmaku, compromise, or trickery. I think that Touhou seems like its super dark because of the setting's potential, along with numerous fan works featuring Gensokyo as a much darker place.

With regards to subverting fanon, it's possible that over time his opinion is changing and/or people have done so many things that he either doesn't like or didn't intend that he sees no other option than to put his foot down.

Another possibility is that as Touhou games of one sort or another have begun to be officially licensed in the Western world, he sees the potential problem where some ideas that emerged from the fandom have become so popular and ingrained that for newcomers it is hard to tell what came from ZUN or people around him and what came from someone else.

Honestly I'm neither a Touhou or ZUN buff, so at best I'm just spitballing at what his motives could be.

As for Clownpiece, she is supposedly inspired by a lampad, so she would fit the bill. As for East Asian characters, they never really jumped out at me as being radical inclusions, however I could be wrong and the Touhous I thought came from outside of Japan could actually be just as much Japanese.

While this is true, the fans also did a lot for Touhou so it's possible he held off fear of seeming ungrateful. Alternatively like I said he could have had time to reflect and his opinions of what he wants Touhou to be could have changed. What really goes on: those are not dark elves, not yet. They are at the momnent dissidents and outcasts of elven society (no immortal can be truly sane and focused on the task all the time). When delivered, they undergo transformation to their trule roles as archiects of restructuring of the elven society to gear it up for the total war. Because it is time to wipe the slate clean once again
That was somewhat of a ripoff. Elves, as immortal, tend to change their personality from time to time, adopting new habits, inclinations and so on. At a given peaceful time, number of them just wander around goofing off (young elves are usually more human-like in their demeanor, still focused etcetera). But they can concentrate and transform from a bunch of hip doofuses to an iron-clad war machine, disciplined, extremely powerful, disciplined and efficient. They need some time for that, though

Well, way i see it, humans (now majority of the setting, so to say are stuck in true medieval stasis, as their elven handlers work diligently to ensure progress does not go too far. dwarves - fractured and rendered impotent by their internal strugle. They probably have the very best tech, but never resources to capitalise on it. goblinoids - masters of biological, mutation, selection, evolution - you name it. At height of their power created number of servant races for themselves, but due to outside influence were overthrown, scattered and now live as lowly slaves of their former soldiers, orks. Overall they are driven to fringes, and at somewhat close to extermination.
Dragons were bred into might by goblinoids and uplifted to sentience by elves. However sentience does not mean wisdom, and in their greed, pride anf anger, they mostly destroyed goblinoids and themselves, and now live isolated, paranoidally guarding their hoards. They are also marked for extinction, and inspired by legends, humans try time and time again try to slay them, which often has a hilarious side-effect of kingdoms being reduced to black stains on the map

It's true that there are those who are going to import, but that is kind of going above and beyond the average person. It's probably even worse depending on their computer literacy because they may worry that they'll go through the trouble of importing only to find that the game doesn't work, requires configuring their computer, or that there is no English patch or that it doesn't work.

Not to mention I don't think it's a stretch to say that by and large the Western fandom is going to tell a new person to just go download the English patched version from somewhere, simply because that is how they did it and the people before them. Because the vast majority of the Touhou fanbase are mustards, considering 19 of the 24 games were released on the PC (with the other five being PC-98 games). The only way anyone in the fanbase can play it is if they by coincidence own a PS4, and those who don't aren't going to buy one just for the extra content unless they're the biggest fans out there.

They even made this content integral to setting up the next game in the series. Yeah, wikis exist so we can read synopses of what happened but it's not really the same as playing it for yourself, and it just sucks that the best version is the console port that most people can't get without paying up for said console.

I do think it's good that the games are getting official outlets to the west though. If only we could start seeing official localizations, but I don't think ZUN is willing to let someone else translate for him.

And then you have a bunch of layers of shadowy organizations controlled by nobles who in turn are controlled by ancient super-intelligences. And then there are super-intelligences that are far beyond those guys - super-intelligences so intelligent that they don't even register the super-intelligences below them as intelligent. They spend all their time looking at what to lower intelligences looks like a wall, but actually is closer to a water surface. And they can see things walking on the land, outside the water. Things that are so powerful and unknowable, they're almost paralyzed with fear.

Touhou expands in multiple directions. You have humans and youkai having parties together but also humans getting eaten by wild youkai. There are hints of scheming and darker secrets but also whimsical details of things having very simple reasons like the mastermind being just bored.
It's neither all dark or all bright, the games to be more bright and more banter heavy while the manga tend to be all over the place depending about whom they are. The stories of the music CDs are also interesting, while partly cryptical.

Gensokyo is essentially built upon balance. The gods and youkai can't survive in the outside world due to the believe in them is replaced by modern science, so they live in gensokyo like in a wildlife reservat. But they also need humans to survive, youkai spawn from human believes and thus somewhat exist for humans. It is heavily implied that Yukari brings in suicidal humans as food, because it would be bad if the human villages would be all eaten. But the humans can also not be left alone or they could grow too strong and become a threat to youkai. So all kinds of factions have all kinds of different interests. Everyone looks to strengthen their power but also not have their needs destroyed. Interestingly the humans are the ones that don't need anyone else, it would be in their best interest to just annihilate all youkai.

About the story of the guy becoming a youkai and getting killed by Reimu. There is a law that humans can't try to become youkai, to prevent them from trying. This is all to preserve the population, as new youkai can be quite unstable and could go on a rampage. So those get exterminated. I find it an interesting idea as it adds a new layer to things, but to be honest I am very tired of it.

Here's the problem, and it's my problem with any other sapient race that does goofy shit like smear itself with blood for no good reason. The issue isn't human values, it's more broad and should be sapient values instead. This picture for example, if that image is supposed to convey that creature's apparent values are separate from a humans. Then why does it simply look like a deranged person needlessly dirtying itself? What does keeping blood all over you when you could clean it off, mean in its culture? Because wanting to be clean isn't a human value, most animals instinctively desire to clean themselves in some way and if you are sapient (being aware of yourself as an entity, capable of critical thinking, logic and advanced problem solving) then you would desire to be clean in some manner as well, beyond that of mere sentience. An animal that is merely sentient recognizes life through only the five senses and cannot think itself out of a rain storm, or getting wet, other than to try and find shelter under a tree and if it cannot conceive of such actions, would simply wait out the storm remaining wet. So I ask, are the youkai in question merely sentient or are they sapient and able to recognize how trite and infantile it is to remain covered in human fluids after eating one when you have the mental capacity to clean yourself of filth. Specially if they also recognize the necessity for clothing (and keeping clothing clean in and of itself) as that picture suggests?

They're basically the earthly tendrils of the gods in my setting. The basic concept is that the gods met to create a race that could exist in most places on the planet in order to have a means for any god to view any of the other races living on the world (most races were created individually by gods while others sprung up through fucked up magic). Because of this, humans are very attuned to worshiping the gods and can connect to them very easily, though they are prone on a large scale to divine direction. This gives way to their other purpose: they can be instilled with the motivation to go on a holy war and remove something beyond the boundaries that would normally be associated with the gods directing a race. Several different human societies that worship different gods may be influenced to do a similar thing without the complications that would arise from individual god-races being directed in unison. Almost no mortals know of this, of course, and most instead think that the god that originally sired humanity vanished at some point and the rest of the pantheon "took in" humanity as their collective race.
