and assuming its made of decent steel, well, I'm just glad I'm a skilled craftsman with a water-cooled belt grinder that wont fry the temper of the steel, and a drill and saw sitting around here.

Because with that equipment without any other tools or even a forge, that out of that monstrosity, I can easily make a half-decent curved single-handed messer (even if the curvature is a bit too much really), and a good 40cm long rondel dagger that will be perfect for stabbing through gaps.

both of which will do a far better job than that hideous thing...

There are worse fantasy weapons than a bat'leth...but not many.

If it only wasn't symmetrical, instead focusing more weight into one end. And had a smoother blade that curved out instead of in. And basically I'm just going to skip to the end and say it would work better as an axe.

Anime is chock-full of weapons far, far worse than the bat'leth. So are video games, books and there are even some worse ones in movies. Maul's double ended light saber springs to mind, when both ends are turned on anyway.
