So WIP, I think I figured out how I'm going to model my sister command squad, but I would like some thoughts.

If I use pic related (Not nine) because none only are both arms open, she's wearing a helmet. I'm thinking I can stick the combi on the sword arm, and the flamer on the plasma. Would this work? I have a bunch of combi-plasma, but I need to get flamers. A regular SM flamer should work I think or maybe SoS flamers even.

There was some weeb leaf shitposter on PA circa 2007. He made a 1500 point IG army that had horribly oversized greenstuff anime girl heads. I believe he also had tentacle rapey tech priests or something. Unfortunately the original images seem to have disappeared, but hopefully a kind anon has them somewhere.

Hey WIP, how should I base my Sisters of Battle? I've been debating it for a while now and I can't decide how I want to base them. When I did the bases for my Admech it was pretty obvious, but I can't decide what would be thematically appropriate and aesthetically pleasing for my sisters.

I get the feeling a dark, astrogranite base is probably a bad idea.
Maybe a desert base? Ruins are also a possibility.

Urban or spaceship floors can be trickier and/or more expensive, if you'd be interested in them.
Alternatively you could look into marble bases, if you wanted to home in on the religious aspect of them.
>>
>>52007099
That's alright, as long as you actually want to get them right-way round in future!

If the door's already fucked you can go to town on making a conversion. I read a bit earlier that there was a tank called the "Sabre", an early, pre-Vindicator tank destroyer based on the Rhino, so feel free to be creative.
Good luck.

If you find a pic, post it. I love seeing weird shit like that
>>
>>52007189
They've never been mine either.
The Texture Paints are actually pretty good in my experience, and the new thicc variants look even better, it's just that I don't really know what else to do with them besides leaving them in a blasted/arid/frozen/muddy wasteland or throwing rocks and detritus on them.

I think for a darker colour scheme, a brighter base like a desert or else grass is a good idea, but for a brighter colour scheme, the contrast in a darker base like urban ruins, moonscape or rocky/muddy earth can work in contrast, but you'd need to put in some amount of subtlety like pools of shade or decorations there for contrast on the base itself, so it isn't just an eyesore that functions like a black-hole of aesthetic interest, dragging down the model overall.
>>
>>52007109

Fluff is a crusade to retake space lost to necrons if that helps. I don't really wanna do them in a desert cause I already did my mechanicus on red sands, but now that I think about it that might not be half bad....I agree i'm not feeling astrogranite. To be honest I like the texture paints but I'm just not feeling them here.
>>
>>52007270

I experimented with some texture paint, and it turned out a little flat, even after I painted it up a little. I don't know if I just need to add more texture or what. Maybe something else on it like chunks of Styrofoam

>>

>I doubt it. The store is pretty new.
No, it's not like the old paints versus new paints, it's a bit more like the brush versus "air" paints.
They still sell both varieties, even though it looks to me like the newer variety will have more appeal.

Here's a PDF explaining it. GW do some decent PDFs but they could do to put them more prominently, it would help beginners out a great deal and explain their products' ideal uses so people appreciate them primarily as they were intended to be.

>>
>>52005419

Any thoughts here?
>>
>>52008365

First question I need to ask based on the surrounding models: you primed that before painting, right?

Secondly, I'm not seeing any loss of detail anywhere, so the coat was thinned enough. However, there are a few spots that could use another layer such as the shoulder in the right.

Keep it up.

I've not worked a ton with cork but I never had trouble. You can often just pin your models' feet and shove the metal right in, which is pretty nice. Also allows for some pretty easy broken streets and rocks to stand on by just basing them and giving a good drybrush.
>>

Any of you friends have any tips for spookifying horsies into nightmares/demonic mounts? Doing some conversion work for VC Blood Knights and looking into my options. So far, I'm planning on greenstuffing some claws (if I can be assed doing it to 15 horses) on their hooves and replacing the tails with something whiplike (again, probably greenstuff).

Other than that, and obviously colour scheme, do you guys have any ideas?
>>
>>52009906

Take a look at the Chaos Knights for inspiration, is all I'd say. Things like losing hooves for claws, forked tongues, fangs, spurs of bone where they shouldn't be, etc.

Of course, a good paint job can work wonders on even an unaltered horse if you can manage to give its gaze an unearthly quality.

You can either try Earth/Sky NMM or look into some of the thing metal foils you can apply. I've seen it done with some japanese gold foil on the Beaconite Pilgrym models and I assume there's a silver version. Being actual metal they reflect light very well. There's also the rub&buff metallic polish range to look into.

Possibly an easier alternative would be using the brightest vallejo air silver colour you can find over a glossy light blue basecoat, and then copious coats of gloss, but that won't reflect light in the same way a mirror does.
>>
>>52010368

first paint in years. is the contrast of shadows and highlight too strong? if so, any tipp on how to fix it except of dumping it in alcohol and starting all over?
>>
>>52011340
I think that'll work ok. Maybe add some outlining between the painted regions to make things pop a bit more.

Otherwise to increase the contrast, well, simply paint on darker shadows and brighter highlights. To reduce contrast add filters, ie a very translucent (often dilluted until they're very wash-like, but you could dilute with clear varnish as well) paint coat applied evenly all over. This pulls everythign towards the colour of the filter, reducing contrast.

Thanks a lot guys. As for a rough how I'm doing them:
>Base with one of off-white, pink (Emperor's Children), Yellow, OR light blue (Vallejo Sky Blue)
>Drybrush white for highlights and texture, needed for the smooth CAD scuplts
>Wash all with a mix of brown (Seraphil Sepia), blue (Guilliman Blue) and water. Mix them on the model, some areas should stay blue, some brown some clear, some a mixture to give variation. Chuck it on and push the paint around.
>When still wet you can put in some other colours, red, green, yellow to push the colour in a different direction.
>When dry use a dark blue wash to shade, just on the undercarriage, legs, under arms etc. Make sure to blend out the edges with water to avoid tide marks. You may want to highlight some of the areas with the original base colour to bring them back a bit.
>Layer Carroburg Crimson and Casandora yellow glazes over pustuled and gorey areas. When layered they give a really nice orangy brown colour. Casandora yellow in particular is a 10/10 paint.
That's basically it for the skin. Its all been a bit of an experiment so each one is done a bit differently, skipping steps and adding extra glazes here and there.

Many send in their minis to GW and I think yours are good enough to be featured in White Dwarf.
>>
>>52012773
open up photoshop
make a new layer on top of your image
Choose a color, and color over the parts you want different
change the layers properties to "hue", and you're done.

it is easier to add "hue" first, as that will let you see more clearly.

Can anyone recommend me a good hobby drill? Looking to magnetize my Knight now I have both magnets and greenstuff, so I need something to make holes that isn't the slightly overpowered DIY power tools I normally use for this stuff, especially since those bits are all pointed.

Also, is there a way to make a clear tank look water-filled/something to fill it with for that? Had the idea of making a Dune Navigator-style Admech Psyker for my army, who'll double as a Heresy Magos. Is there a way to get the coloured fluid effect for the inside of the tank done at all well?

I use the army painter drill myself, but others have had success buying the very cheap chinese ones from aliexpress. I don't trust chinese goods myself, but YMMV.

You can use either water effects or clear resin tinted with inks for a coloured fluid effect. As for tanks, I've been thinking about using one of the glass bits off an e-cigarette which you can usually buy for a tenner or so. They're quite small though, so you could try and make a tank out of pieces of clear plastic and hide the joins with some bitz, like an iron frame or whatever. It's important to ensure that whatever you use is watertight however, as otherwise your fluid will all leak out make a terrible mess.

I remember seeing a fantastic converted admech army a while ago, I think on ammobunker or dakka. It was made before the admech release and I seem to recall a few fluid tanks in there. I can't find it now unfortunately but your google-fu may be stronger than mine.

I feel like this questions gets asked atleast once per Week but what is a decent Airbrush setup to begin with? Preferably one that is easy to clean.

Am i supposed to wear a mask/ spray in a separate room when airbrushing or is it fine to do it in your normal hobbyroom with decent ventilation?
>>
>>52012983

Thanks, I'll look into the AP drill, since I only use chinese stuff for recast FW when I'm converting. Not paying £60 for a model I'm using as a grab-bag of Admech parts.

The e-cig glass bits are a little too small, although I might use one a friend had spare as a brain-in-a-jar head for my custom Archmagos when I make him. I was considering just buying some tinted transparent acrylic tube for it, and then filling with clear water effect or resin like you said. He'll be on a floating chassis and attended by some of the dudes in the picture, who'll be GSC Neophytes with servo-arms and such. They'll double as Servitors in Heresy games.

Finished my 1850pt Word Bearer Host yesterday. I am pretty hyped, that they are finished after all this time, but I had no time to take good pictures. These were taken on my phone after a game today.

Included are:
1x Flying Sorcerer
1x Khorne Icon-Bearer-Lord on Juggernaut
20x CC CSM
6x Bolter CSM
5x Havocs
5x Raptors
5x Terminators
40x Cultists
5x Gal Vorbak Spawns
1x Portal-Vortex Kharybdis Dreadclaw

Here is a little gallery with all the pictures separately: http://imgur.com/a/RB24k

>>
>>52012967
Most likely.
>>
>>52015625
You need a richer yellow (currently the green tint blends into the teal) and a brighter purple. It looks like you may have over-washed the teal, making it look dull and muddy.

Bright, glossy purple gems would contrast well with a rich, orangey yellow and a cooler, cleaner shade of teal.

You want my opinion, your scheme isn't very good

Here's something to illustrate that. See how everything looks like it's the same shade of grey? That's bad. You want colors that both contrast and compliment rather than just blending together in a big blob of blah

Sometimes subtle colors are good, but in this case it's Dropzone and those figures are TINY.

>>
>>52016093
Complementary colors, I'm sure you've seen a color wheel or noticed a hollywood movie poster, are hue based. They really complement by contrasting. Except red and green. Christmas ruined red and green. Meanwhile you also have brightness which is how dark/light it is. A good scheme for a small figure to really make those details pop will have at decent spread of at least hue and brightness

That scheme has almost identical brightness while teal and yellow are very close to each other on a color wheel.

Be warned, though. You paint an army florescent blue and orange and it's going to look like ass. You should look up existing colorschemes and see what looks good and try to understand why it looks good

There are about a thousand points where they should be seeping and weeping sticky shiny liquid, pus, blood etc. For example, the plague bearer with mouth on belly, the open skinflaps. They look too dry and clean.

Also distended swollen leg plague bearer's leg is the same tone as the rest of his body. It would look more effective darker or lighter or more red or just anything. It looks like you haven't considered the anatomy of these daemons.

TLDR: MAKE MORE FILTHY AND DISGUSTING. LOOKS LIKE CLEAN GUMDROP ICECREAM.

I'm working on on a company command squad and 2 veterans for my valhallans. I greenstuffed some carapace army. How does it look?
I really wanted to keep only valhallans in my army but I need a squad of vets and a ccs with carapace, the current valhallan models are extremely unarmoured and don't even look like they deserve a 5+, so I can't do that. My plan is a ccs (pictured) melta vets in a chimera, my current amount of valhallans as an infantry platoon and 50 conscripts.
I was thinking I could buy valhallan metals for conscripts, but that'd set me back at least 250 dollars, 300 realistically as I couldn't use the seargant models, in comparison to 10 boxes of snap fit cadians for 120. I maybe could use 3rd party russian style heads but I'm not sure how conversion friendly those snap fits are
Oh well, tldr how's the greenstuff?

I personally like this a bit better, the greys are boltgun metal.
What is the best way to paint good looking metal? Metal has always been my weak point. I have leadbelcher, runefang steel and nuln oil, but it still looks bad for me when i paint it usually.

Assembling my first Forge World models and I honestly expected more.

DKoK Grenadiers, there's so many gaps in the backs at the arms that I'm going to have to fill.
>>

dkok infantry are a nightmare to assemble. I love their two or three piece resin models like the sigmar frogs, but the infantry are not worth the damn time it takes to assemble

Forgeworld is really good if it's a large model, like a vehicle or monstrous creature (gaps don't feel as intimidating one 1 model as it does on 10) or what

Recasts are probably better for dkok or chaos dwarves or any fw army. Stick to single big models for fw

is priming even that essential?

and i hear the "thin your paints to a milk-like consistency" line all the time, but i feel like even modest thinning makes it apply more like a wash than a typical paint.

i am out of practice and am painting like shit
>>
>>52020118
priming isn't essential if you don't thin your paints to a milk-like consistency. if you do, primer helps your paint stick and adhere to the model a little bit better, which can be helpful. I wouldn't say its a def 100% must...but it can also be good for things like setting out for preshading (getting from the neutral grey that most plastic is in to a black, or white)
>>
>>52018050
You could do spray priming with an airbrush.

Set up a deep cardboard box or whatever as a spray booth and wear a respirator.

>>
>>52020118
the biggest mistake i made was over-thinning. thinning is a good general rule but it takes practise to find where and when you want to thin to what consistency. i tend to thin my basecoats less then my layers, and if you're doing something like detail work on a flag or banner, or edge highlighting, sometimes you dont even want to thin at all.

>>
>>52018788
Thanks for the feedback. I disagree about not taking their anatomy into account though, the swollen parts, spotty parts and gory parts are all discoloured, that's what I've based most of the colour variation on. Maybe just not enough for your liking.

Also the clean cuts and openings are a conscious choice, I wanted a bright uniting colour and I'm happy with it and the use of blood effect and pus effect paint is a bit of a pet hate of mine, I think they look extremely jarring on a miniature. I was tempted by black/oil colour. I will probably gloss the gore once I get round to varnishing.

Imo it's a little low on contrast. the medium grey and blue are gonna be hard to tell apart from a distance. Not terrible though.
But if you look at the thumbnail you can barely see the camo pattern. Kind of defeats the whole idea of breaking up the silhouette if it looks unicolor.
So strictly speaking even in real world terms I think this would be a poor choice of colors for camo.
Just crank up the saturation of the blue or add some more contrast in the values. Brighter darker shades of grey, that sort of thing.

I really wish I could preposition his Crozius arm a little. Right now he makes me think he's calling his allies forward which is cool pretty cool, but I think it might seem more heroic if he were rearing up for an attack. Not sure though.

I think the first pose where he's looking at where his gun's targeted is the better "action pose". He looks like he's moving forward and holding his crozius aloft cautiously or pre-emptively.
The second pose looks as you described, but I think it's a bit too "ethereal" looking. Maybe if the base was a bit higher and more dynamic, it could look "heroic", but it looks like he's standing on a molehill, and his face looks like he has severe indigestion or diarrhea and he's waving the sceptre to take his mind off it. If it was a traditional skull face or a more human-looking face, it might well work.

Still a bit thick (most noticeable in the bone and the red), and you need to wash and highlight the bone with more colours (a brown wash, a re-coat of the base bone colour, and an ushabti bone highlight).
Other than that good control "within the lines", so to speak. Practice sharp highlights on the toes, this is a good model for that.
Keep at it, you're doing fine, practice makes perfect, etc.

I think the basecoat was grey, then layered The fang, washed creases with some dark blue and then layered thin layers of russ grey, leaving the washed Fang on edges and highlighted with mix of russ and fenrisian.

Could propably just spray the thing with Russ grey primer and work from there.

different paints have different consistencies, but generally even a 50/50 on most paints will cover in two layers, especially if its base paints. Some metallics you barely need water in at all like liberator gold. Even on detail like you talked about, you can just trace over multiple times, especially if it needs to be flat liek on cloth.

If you pushed the yellow all the way up into a mustard, it would really reflect the whole "secret cult embedded in the working class" since it's a very common colour for work clothes and coveralls.

wraithlord has purple, blue, red, green and gold.
You already got every single color on there, why start being picky now?

Seriously though green and purple is a tough combo.
I'm inclined to say orange. ymmv

>>
>>52026686
I don't think it looks bad, reminds me of SC dark templar. Perhaps basing them on magma and doing object source lighting from it?
>>
>>52026686
Hey, I'm not saying it looks terrible. Imo you should get rid of the blue and red on the Wraithlord and use a neutral color there though.
Black, white, tan or khaki would work better than the blue/red.

You basically have a gold as stand in for yellow. Purple and yellow is a solid combo. Green goes well with that.
But you need to cut down the number of colors you use.

>>52026686
this looks great, cause it is just blue/purple and gold with a green on the blade as accent.

>>52026633
This looks a bit all over the place even though you used similar colors. The difference is that the seer has a smooth gradient and that makes it work viusally. Painting each segment a different color makes it look disjointed because of the amount of colors you are using.
My suggestion would be to lose one color.
Replace the blue with a netural tone or paint the helmet the same color as the armor and it would already look much better in terms of composition imo.

>>52026590
The wraithlord just has bad color choices on the loincloth. Easy to fix though.

I don't know if this is an official scheme or a homebrew, but maybe this will help you in either case.
When it comes to color schemes less is more.
As a rule of thumb you need one primary a secondary and an accent usually to make a scheme pop.
In your case the primary would be blue/purple (whichever way you lean or stick with the gradient, but avoid the segmented look), then gold as secondary and green as accent.
If you use blue and purple as colors in their own right it gets messy. Better to make choice here for the sake of convenience when painting troops imo. Reserve the fancy gradients for characters if time is a factor.

Skitarii vanguard helmets
Cadian Body, Arms, Various Greebles
Victoria Miniatures Greatcoat Legs
Guitar wire
Lots of Green stuff

Had to clip the ball joint off the helmets and collars off the cadians and greenstuff a neck to get the heads to not sit too high. Various other bits for details. Backpacks that aren't really visible in the shot were all green stuff and styrene tube.

I want to use the purple as the main color, as in the color of the hull of tanks etc.

This is a homebrew scheme, that I sorta accidentally came up with basically zero thought put behind it, when I painted this farseer>>52026686

I've grown to regret this scheme desu, but I cannot start over again, because I already have so many figures painted with that scheme.

Not a mold line, it's the line where the two halves of the arm were glued together. And yeah, I should have cleaned it up, but I only spotted it after I had already started painting the figure, and couldn't be arsed.

I've had really bad experiences with them and I owned 2. My favourite one was when the needle seal wore down on my SG I was told had to send it back to badger to be repaired (something that takes me literally 1 minute to repair with my new airbrush).

My H&S has been better to use and everything on it has been so easy to maintain in comparison.

If you want to be a real American Hero though I guess you don't have a choice.
