What's your favorite campaign? Mine is Prophecies, because I think it does a great job of making you care about the world and its inhabitants.

That one quest in Ascalon where you and your party had to run away from a gigantic horde of Charr warriors holy shit that was amazing.

Also, Factions was definitely the high point for me. It was gorgeous.

You're gonna get hate whether you talk about the first game or second one. Anyone here will find any excuse to hate a thing.

Regardless of whether you're talking about GW1 or GW2, I really like their take on fantasy races. They feel refreshing while not being too alien for ~originality~. I can't really say there's a tabletop RPG that would work "best" with Guild Wars, though, since it's a setting that wouldn't be particularly difficult to adopt to anything.
>>
>>51999314

Their Tengu are great.

>>51999255
Holy fuck I forgot about those guys 100% lmao
>>
A lot of potential as an rpg setting for all different kinds of game type.

You could go high level heroes fighting the big bad all the way down to some Kaineng street rats trying to survive against the gangs, plague and starvation.
>>
>>51999432
A game as a Charr warband set before the searing would be interesting.

Was it ever established what relationship the Charr had with the Grawl?
>>
>>51998114
Yes. Yes! D&D 4e could work well if you want to emulate the skill system.

Even the exotic professions work with the system.
>Ritualist = Shaman
>Dervish = Avenger
>Paragon = Warlord

If you just want a story set in Tyria, or if you dislike D&D and/or 4e, you could use just about any system though.
>>

Them binning the monk class one one of the reasons I hardly played GW2.

Though I rarely 55ed, I liked 600ing more as it was more relaxed.

Also no Touch Ranger no Life.
>>
>>51999314
The handling of races was fucking fantastic. I have mixed feelings about the races themselves, but none of them have the problem where they could've just been replaced by humans of identical culture which is my biggest pet-peeve about fantasy races.
>>
>>51999614
Speaking of rangers, I really liked the variety of pets that you can get. The Zaishen Menagerie was a godsend if you like switching them out a lot.

Jesus, you could tell that there's so much love put into the game. I just recently got back into it and I was struck by how much stuff there was just in pre-searing Ascalon.
>>
>>51999587

Why don't I remember these guys? When I played Prophesies I only got a bit into the jungle.
>>
>>51999789
I think it would have made the game a lot more interesting if they sort of switched the Norn and the Charr culturally, so that the Charr had retained their cross between native american and mongol aesthetic and the Norn had advanced technologically out of necessity after being pushed out of the far shiverpeaks by Jormag.

>>51999828
Because they were in Nightfall. Kourna, if I remember correctly.
>>
>>51999843

Ahh. I don't think I ever made it off the start island in nightfall. It was pretty though
>>
Was the cheap and easy resurrection canon? If so, was it why humans had such a stranglehold on all three continents?
>>
>>52000147
>was it why humans had such a stranglehold on all three continents?

They didn't in the first campaign. They were forced out of Ascalon by the Charr, the mountains were controlled by dwarves and the jungle, desert and fire chain islands were largely, if not completely, uninhabited by humans.
>>
>>52000442
What made Tyria (the continent) so hard to colonize?
>>
>>52000750
Monsters on Tyria are still DnD tier but casters are all martial tier.
>>
>>52000750
It probably could've been done if it wasn't for the Guild Wars and the subsequent Charr invasion driving humanity to near extinction.
>>
>>52000442
>They were forced out of Ascalon by the Charr

The Charr did a lot more than that. They were the bane of humanity and, left unchecked, probably would've conquered the whole world. The Ascalonians were the only thing holding them back. So after the Searing removed Ascalon as an obstacle, they were free to invade Orr and Kryta.

In Kryta they were plowing through the humans until the White Mantle and the Mursaat appeared and pushed them back. Without those ancient phase-shifting flying assholes, the Krytans would've been annihilated.

An interesting aside, since the Dwarves were too strong to overcome, the Charr had to go through Norn territory to reach Kryta. The Charr knew that the Norn could go viet cong on their furry asses, but didn't care to do so unless provoked, so they reached a tacit non-aggression pact and passed through the Shiverpeaks peacefully.

Anyway, in Orr, the Charr were also devastating the humans. Mind you, by the way, that Orr was pretty much the greatest human civilization on the planet. It was where the GODS lived until they left. With the Charr knocking on their door, Khilbron (coaxed by Abaddon) panicked and nuked the entire subcontinent. Though Orr was destroyed, it also destroyed the Charr army and likely prevented them from continuing south to Elona.

It's funny, without the Mursaat and Abaddon, humanity outside of Cantha probably would've been annihilated.

Grenth started as a demigod son of Dwayna and imprisoned the old god of death, Dhuum, for his policy of "death undeniable" which allowed neither resurrection nor undead. Grenth then ascended to the pantheon. Pretty badass if you ask me.

I took a lot of inspiration from both GW1 and 2 in many of my homebrews. GW1's hit location mechanic was ripped wholesale. Dual professions lives on in spirit, but its definitely moved away from where I started.

There's just something especially solid about its lore and mechanics. It just displayed itself exactly what it was supposed to be, it didn't need to try and be anything else.
>>
>>52008699
Gone? You can play it right now.
>>
>>52008860
2 kind of lost that direction of lore and setting since it's now only in continent Tyria and that is experiencing a nascent globalisation of sorts. The races have their own thing going but its all starting to meld together because plot.
GW1 felt organic as it depicted a variety of different cultures around the world that really were different because they had developed on their own in different circumstances.
Starting up Factions blew my mind after Prophecies and it blew again when I left Shing Jea for Kaineng.
>>
>>52008970
GW2's lore is tarnished by real politics and that started even with EotN. There's too much that feels like "we just have to put this in" without regard to whether or not it was really needed or beneficial to the story. Mechanically, its a good, fun game, but the lore doesn't compare to the first.

I've heard plenty of people complain about GW1's story, particularly prohpecies, but the story a unique aspect of GW1. Despite any of the technical aspects of what the story is, or how easy it was to predict where it was going, the simplicity and directness of its own presentation made it what it was. GW1 is unpretentious, and maybe that's why I like it so much.

Yeah 1 isn't some stellar example of video game writing done right, on any of the campaigns, but they are well written enough, with sufficiently flowing plots, interesting and varying locations and overall just bits and pieces of cool things that keep you hooked.
Prophecies is a great journey, Factions about saving the crumbling empire and Nightfall uncovering the unimaginable machination's of a fallen god.
They're all different but they're cohesive.

GW2 is a patchwork.
>Start your journey, do some personal adventuring, none of this has relation to the main plot
>Choose your organisation yeah whatever, look how the dragons have fucked shit up
>Oh right the dragons, lets unite these organisations
>lets kill one of these dragons, okay now it's dead and took us a whole MMORPG launch campaign, 5 more to go
>I'm not a dragon but I'm a huge threat let me just destroy Lion's Arch lel
>well shit she was controlled by a dragon maybe we should mobilise ourselves to go and kill the dragon
>okay now we're in the jungle let's kill the dragon, okay it's dead
>two dragons are awake now, goddamn, oh shit it's the White Mantle though better take care of that first

I mean, sure, apart from the beginning it is ostensibly about facing the Elder Dragons but it just goes about it in a lackluster way, but even if it didn't and it would focus ONLY on defeating them all, it would be repeating the same thing over and over again, which it will still be doing even if they throw in these diversions like Scarlet was and White Mantle is now.
They wrote themselves into a corner of boring writing.

GW2 has an okay story.

I like the elder dragons. Those are cool antagonists.

But the protagonists side is full of annoying characters, like Taimi, or the Commander. It comes across as tumblr self insert fanfiction, and that's hard to do when you're the company writing the story, and not a fan writing fanfiction.
>>
>>52012581
Player character's fine, I think. Really neutral about everything but this is understandable. Dead right about Taimi though, and the rest of the party aren't much of characters or likeable, save for Canach.
For how much of an ensemble cast the whole story of GW2 is, quite few characters actually have any plot significance. Traeherne obviously, who is ridiculously dull, but other than him and obviously Pact Commander it's pretty much only Taimi, Rytlock, and Logan and Caithe I guess, of which only Rytlock's any cool.

I dunno if there is a system that can replicate my favorite part of GW1: the mesmer's ability to punish targets for using skills. The mesmer is just all-around difficult to conceptualize from a gameplay standpoint, so much so that they complete reworked the class for the second game.

Original mesmer is one of the more unique concepts of a class I've encountered in vidya.
It was also by far the hardest profession to play. It was almost as if designed strictly for PvP, but you obviously had the option to play them in PvE, but to be an effective mesmer you absolutely had to know what you would be facing against and adjust yourself accordingly.
But if you knew, the denial and shutdown they could dish out could trivialize fights.
>>
>>51999557

Minion master builds would be kinda rough, since 4e wasn't big on the whole "ruin the action economy with a bunch of minions", but blood/death/curse magic necros fit in pretty well. It's essentially the warlock class. Somewhere between controller and striker.

Now, Mesmer would be a fun class to stat up.
>>
>>52015736

I remember running a melee punishment Mesmer in random arena. That shit was so much fun. It's too bad they did away with the skill system for the second game.

There was so much system there to play with. It reminded me of the best parts of MtG deck building. To say nothing of 8v8 where you could start to get team-wide builds going: EoE ranger teams, etc...
>>
>>52015765
GW was theorycrafter's wet dream vidya. Due to the amount of skills and dual class mechanic it was an absolute nightmare to balance, but that also made the meta fluctuate constantly with every balance patch.
It was dynamic and exiting.

I definitely wanna get a pseudo Dshot for my marksman in the homebrew system me and friends are playing, the concept of interruptions is one of the things I liked the most in this game, also SCs
I think the idea of "have 250+ skills and choose 8 for your mission is definitely worth implementing ingame

And PvP is ded.
>>
>>52024093
I agree. After starting again and knocking out a few more points in the GWAMM title I never finished, it's just kind of lonely. Solo is fun and all, but there's so much potential that just goes unused because of the heat death of the servers. You'll probably only ever find people doing the Z-quests, in Balth, and in Kamadan.

Though I'm not sure if that one guild is still doing that weekly Fort Aspenwood thing, though. A few months ago they were, but I haven't been on since then.
>>
>>52024356
Oh there are guilds around. I played a few weekends ago, started a new Prophecies character and indulged myself in a bit of nostalgia, and HA notifications were popping up.
Presumably, if you play on international, there's activity in PvE as well but to find players to group with you pretty much have to belong to a rather sizeable guild.
You might find some occasional players loafing around places such as Underworld entrances or Realm of Torment.

They only had their huge war with the humans because the humans took their lands when they colonized Tyria. Who knows what they'd be like if they were left alone.
>>
>>52028252
Yeah who knows, but they lived for war ever since, for a long period of time.
The peace with humans during GW2 shows that they're settling, but their society still revolves around military because the place they have is still rather delicate. Flame legion is a constant problem and the Dragons threaten all life so they can't just lay down their weapons just yet.
And if they're ever gone, why stop there? They've reached the place where they're the best at war. Elona isn't very far south with airships in use. Palawa Joko might have a furry problem in the future.

I know I am in the far minority, but I am a huge fan of the entire Sylvari storyline/story as a whole. I would not have minded a singleplayer game ala kotor or something specifically about them.

The greatest tragedy in GW2 was the decision to vindicate the Charr. I remember rolling on Tarnished Coast as an Ascalon native, and Charr would fucking roll up to the Ascalonian district of Divinity's Reach and act like they own the place, and when I told them to fuck off, other Ascalonian characters would tell me off for being a racist! BAH. MY PARENTS ARE STILL FIGHTING THAT GODDAMN WAR.
>>
>>52033038
From a realistic human point of view, the Charr can't be trusted even though it is 250 years since they tried to wipe out humanity. They did, after all, attempt genocide. Goes both ways too since humans did their best to eradicate the Charr as well
>>
>>52033038
One of the things that kept me hyped during the GW2 beta-test in spite of the lack of skills ("m-maybe it's because it's a beta?") was that in the human story, at some point, you were asked "where do you come from?", and it was hinted your answer would have an impact on the story. I was like "woaaaah, this MMO will have actual ramifications in the story and choices and it will be so good! I'll be an Ascalonian, I bet it will add interesting dialogs with Charrs!"
Then the game came and those choices had 0 impact on anything.
Well, at least the game was pretty and the exploration quite fun while it lasted.

>>52033335
Exactly, Charr and Humans have been natural ennemies for so long it's no even funny. Which is why it is so infuriating seeing the both of them allying all willy-nilly in GW2, everywhere, all the time. I mean, would a Tolkien Dwarf ever ally with an Orc? Because that's almost the exact same relationship here.

GW2 was such a disappointment on every level except for in short bursts of exploration.

It feels like such a new era modern MMO because everybody is so goddamned SJW group-huggie and all the enemies are just bland mindless evil enemies with seemingly no goal beyond being evil.
Not to even mention any part of it beyond that.

GW1 however is fantastic and seems great for a setting and I've thought about doing it myself. I've drawn inspiration from Factions especially, the Jade Sea is a fantastic concept.

Wow... it's almost like you never played human origin story, Caudecus' Manor SM, HoT or Living World. No one trusts the Sylvari anymore, yes, the White Mantle are still around and want to wage war on the Charr (and are inciting rebellion to get more of humanity on their side), and some Sylvari are still a little bitter that Asura experimented and tortured Sylvari upon first meeting them.

I get that you don't like ANet's "SJW agenda"; but it's ANet that has the SJW's... the story and lore of Guild Wars is a little more complex than "everyone gets along in-world"
>>
>>52037576
The problem for me is the way it's pushed into our faces. Uniting and joining together regardless of race and shit are presented as being the objectively correct option while groups which are opposed to this are always portrayed as without legitimate grievances.

Not to mention the SJW characters are either annoying as fuck or forced down our throats constantly. Why do you have to constantly mention your relationship with Marjory and how scared you are every fucking mission? I get it you're gay, that's fine but I don't need to keep hearing this over and over.

The most annoying is that 10 yo disabled transgolem asura kid and how the writing constantly reminds you that's she's super smart and shit.

>not found anywhere in the game

>>
>>52038199
Other Asura are more condescending and often out of touch though, compared with Taimi who seems to be perfect.
>>
>>52037959
Fair enough. I think a lot of the shortcomings of GW2 story come from not having the time or resources to really do it justice.

Taimi exists purely as an expository character: she explains the plot points quickly to get the story moving; in their haste and frugality, ANet goes for the show-not-tell technique of storytelling. So yeah, I agree she's one of the weakest points of the story right now.

Regarding Jorie and Kas, I'm kinda neutral on the whole thing: ANet didn't take the time to really flesh out their relationship, so I don't give a rat's tail either way--I'm just not invested. Though, I think it's kinda bold of ANet to portray them as being on the outs right now; it's a truth everyone learns at some point--hooking up is easy, staying together is hard.

>while groups which are opposed to this are always portrayed as without legitimate grievances

Yeah, they do this a lot. It's really weird.

Ever walked around Divinity's Reach and listened to some of the NPC conversations? A lot of legitimate points of debate, like the queen's lack of an heir or her military ineptitude, are met with sharp criticism. Then in the newest story arc Queen Jennah literally imprisons the entire legislature in an effort to root out traitors. When someone starts calling her out on it, the White Mantle conveniently attacks and the whole issue is thrown out the window. It's also worth mentioning that once the attack begins Queen Jennah proceeds to show off a bunch of god level magic abilities, like making a gargantuan shield and fucking disintegrating people with a point of her hand.

Everything just feels vaguely Orwellian or something. I feel like I'm going crazy as I'm being told that the mind controlling super wizard despot is in the right because reasons.

Also it's weird how they have a whole arc about humans and their politics and Kasmeer doesn't show up at all. I don't think she's even mentioned. Did the writers forget about her or something?

There was a really cool speculation thread years ago about the dragons and what they meant. The gist was that each dragon also represents some corrupted "virtue". Zhaitan corrupts immortality through undeath. Kralkatorrik corrupts perfection through crystallization. Mordremoth corrupts nurturing through torture. I ripped the results of that thread wholesale (some parts being my own contribution) and am putting it into my own setting for my fantasy homebrew.

There's quite a bit of lore speculation threads that are better than the game itself, but just like balance threads, the majority are shit.

GW had a system where you could choose a second class, and then proceed to use skills and stats from that class along with your main class skills and stats.
Every class also had a primary stat that wouldn't be available as a secondary class.
Every class also had a slew of skills.
Because you could take a second class and switch it freely and practically whenever, dual class skill combos and sometimes using a primary stat's effect with another classes skills created a massive amount of different possible synergies that the developers simply couldn't all account for.

Enter the subsequent campaigns. Factions and Nightfall and Eye of the North all brought with them a new batch of skills for each profession, and in Factions' and Nightfall's case 2 whole new classes each.
You can probably imagine how each of these three releases affected the game.
So, whenever a new release or a balance patch was released and something was added and something was buffed and something got the nerf hammer, some skills changed enough that it resulted in completely new synergies that had been unforeseen
Some of these synergies were manageable and merely changed the face of the meta slightly, but some were so ridiculous that it forced the developer to take action rather quickly, hence why flavor of the month was a big thing going on in Guild Wars' PvP.
Practically every patch changed the meta.

The game was affectionately (and sometimes less so) often known as Build Wars. Sometimes it was more about creating a team build composition that hopefully took into account what sort of resistance you'd be facing against, rather than individual skill and group coordination.
The amount of shit you had to take into consideration in PvP was sometimes kind of high, and then again it fell apart if you faced a gimmick team with a broken combo.

>>
>>52038484
A lot of their recent story just has so many shoehorned parts. Taimi is defined by her deformity. Kas-jory are defined by their lesbian relationship. Good characters obviously don't need to rely on writing gimmicks and forced inclusion for an audience to connect. They definitely have the manpower in their writing departments. The biggest problem is that they probably have too many cooks in the kitchen. There's too much of a "crowdsourced" feel to the changes from GW1 to GW2.
>>
>>52041801
Yeah, but the thought was that the Nightmare Court were Mordy minions (which they are, but this was before Mordy was truly Mordy). The Nightmare Court uses torture and brainwashing everywhere. The Pale Tree contrasts that with true nurturing (or nature in the maternal sense), so Mordy would be the opposite of Mother Nature.

Its still somewhat close to lore, but a stronger focus on that "corrupted virtues" concept is what's nifty.
>>
>>52042104
It says a lot about a game with such a big cast that there's seriously only three characters whom I've liked and they're your mentor in the Order of Whispers story chapter Tybalt, Rytlock and Canach.
Destiny's Edge was always soulless.
Commander's party is five sixths boring or annoying.
Traeherne's infamy is well known, and none of the more minor characters have any characterisation beyond superficialities.
The story is just a really static and unimaginative mess of things.
It's so staggeringly different from the original stories and the atmosphere of the first game that Guild Wars 2 might just as well have been a completely different game that was just coated with a superficial Guild Wars fluff.
>>
>>52042104
I think Canach is one of the only well done characters in GW2. His motives flow so that it kinda feels natural how he goes from asshole secondborn to the stooge of green jesus.

>>52042214
The original GW2 story wasn't THAT bad, it only really started going downhill in Living World S1 IMO. Adding the PC's "party" to fight Scarlet Briar, then they had to be included in HoT and the future story missions. Most of the time they just feel like fluff which doesn't add anything to the story.
>>
>>52042605
>wasn't THAT bad
It was. I'd say it's a different kind of bad. Original campaign is just boring as all hell and the attempts at drama and anything engaging are ridiculously lackluster.
Admittedly for all bad things subsequent content did, it also set things moving at the very least and managed to make more interesting missions and locations.
I didn't play living story 1 because I'd dropped the game by then, and only returned way after, but I'm actually kind of inclined to say that the writing has improved, albeit in the way where for every two positive things they have at least one where they drop the ball.
>>
>>52042689
let's be fair, though, the original GW storylines weren't all that good. Don't get me wrong, I love them to death, but the story in Prophesies boils down to 'evil lich wants to free imprisoned evil and use them to conquer the word', which is hardly original. The dialogue and voice acting were also pretty atrocious. Factions has a much more well rounded story - a rather neat tale about greed and fear - but there aren't any stand out characters. Nightfall starts to get interesting, but a big part of the story hinges on us caring about Kormir, and it doesn't really justify that.

The best story was Eye of the North, which blended the originality and charm GW had with a more polished, professional approach to story writing. You can kind of see how GW2 happened, since after Eye of the North was well received they must have assumed that getting more professional writers to craft polished stories must be the way to go.

Unfortunately, it ended up a soulless, stale, cookie-cutter mmo which tried to appeal to everyone and stripped out the best parts of the original game in order to do so.

Ironically, its exactly like what happened to the other GW - Games Workshop. The lore was great in the beginning because it was just four guys starting up a company so they could make money off their love of fantasy games. Then they realised that as the company grew they needed more professional writers and artists, and things got better because the newcomers blended the awesome (but messy) fluff that was already there with their professional skills. But after a while more and more of the founders left, everything got more corporatised, and eventually the writing process was just hirelings obeying orders from the financial guys to make the product as accessible and bland as possible.
>>
>>52041858
Oh, I knew about the duel class system, loved Nightfall.

I just was interested in knowing more about the balance since I'm never terribly big into PvP but like it all to be nice and neat anyway.

>>
>>52042885
No you're right. GW1 isn't some high point of video game writing, but it's not just about plot, but the world as well.
2 is just incredibly bland in comparison. I mean, it is a pretty looking world to walk around, but it sure isn't a terribly interesting one.
Nothing in GW2 compares to the feeling of Seared Ascalon, or crossing the Shiverpeaks for the first time on your journey, or the juxtaposition of pastoral Shing Jea to Kaineng, or the Jade ravaged Cantha, or raiding ancient Elonian tombs and trekking the savannahs.

I loved some of the fun builds that were semi-effective in AB compared to the hardcore of ranked PvP.

Touch Rangers were naturally a laugh (yes I know I'm scum), but my favourite without a doubt was the Starburst Elemental Assassin.

Meteor Shower, Shadow Step to target, Bed of Coals, then spam the Starburst.

Shower did AoE damage and knockdown, bed of coals did AoE damage plus burning to people who are knocked down, Star Burst was a touch spell that did AoE damage, set people on fire and regained you Energy.

Easy for solo clearing points, but best of all if a big melee broke out in a choke point you could bring down a fair few players as your teams tanks held the line.
>>
The multiclassing of GW1 reminds me sort of of Rule of Cool's Legend.
>>
I started with Factions, and I always kinda laughed at the flak it got for power leveling you so fast to near 20.

Especially when every newbie who went over to Kaineng unprepared or at like lvl 15 got fucking murdered and had to either go back or be hand held by their guild mates.

Saying that when I did go back to Proph I loved it too (and the later expansions too) but Kaineng's atmosphere was a lot of fun and a bit different from most fantasy games.

>>
>>52042885
>>52043180
GW1's story was exactly what it needed to be. The reason its good is because it fits with the rest of the game. GW2's story falls short in comparison to the rest of its presentation, and so the contrast is seen more starkly. GW1 meets your expectations for what the story is and where it will go. This isn't to say that the story is easy to predict, or that prediction would be desirable, but rather you have certain wants from the story and GW1 delivers. GW2's problem is that it largely either under delivers, or delivers unwanted portions. That's the main difference. The pieces of GW1 fit better together than the pieces of GW2.

i have zero clue about guild wars lore, but are the races that were playable in GW2 at least always part of GW lore, or were they introduced to the universe with GW2?

it felt so out of place to see so many races when GW1 was populated by humans only.

Charr have been there from the beginning, Norn and Asura were added in Eye of the North, which was the expansion, Sylvari were made for GW2 and were at some point changed from generic elves to salads

You should know the Charr. Norns and Asura were introduced in Eye of the North. Norns lived in the northern shiverpeaks, while a dragon forced the Asura up from the underground. Sylvari are the newest race, coming from the pale tree planted a long ass time ago by the centaur Ventari and his human buddy.

I really loved GW. I've played GW2 since the beginning, but it's never been as good. I hate GW2's build system. It feels so bland and uncreative. Most of all I mourn for the mesmers. We went from skillfull trolling to Naruto clones.
That said, I like the new races, to be honest. Sylvari appeal to my love of fairytale stuff, charr have had a nice evolution from Prophecies to now, and the others are okay, I guess. It's GW2's reinterpretation of the humans I hate... Kryta has lost all of its flavor to become some sort of watered-down Generic European Kingdom(tm). And all of the other human nations are gone.

The plot has had strong moments and extremely weak ones. It's all over the place.
Meanwhile the GW1 plots were nothing extraordinary, but they were consistent. Nightfall is my favorite because eldritch horrors.

>Humans
Yeah, I had hoped that your choice of ancestry would determine something further down the line but nope. Divinity's Reach had a Canthan district before release, but even that was scrapped - only the Ossan Quarter's left. I understand that Krytan society has had to integrate Ascalonian, Canthan and Elonian immigrants, but there should at least be some sort of regional differences among the humans. Even in fairly small countries, people develop widely different speech patterns and ideologies across regions.
>>
>>52047681
>Divinity's Reach had a Canthan district before release, but even that was scrapped
I still don't get it why anet pretend Cantha doesn't exist.

>but muh mixing of asian cultures
gw1 factions included was released in all asian countries across the world. Mists of pandaria (a far messier mix of asian cultures) is played worldwide.
>>
>>52047861
It's referred to in the game, just written off conveniently, because including it to the plot would be a hassle, much like including Elona would be.
Removal of the Cantha district was dumb though, I don't get it. Apparently Chinese and Korean players complained about it.

Well, Cantha at least has a sliver of chance to be included later if the game survives that long. One of the Dragons is in the sea between Tyria and Cantha, so they could just as well write that this dragon first threatens Cantha, rather than Tyria.
Elona is Joko'd so no plot significance to Dragons.
>>
As much as I loved my Rangers in GW1 I think I spent the most time playing Monk.

Then GW2 killed Monks...

Aside from Joko, Kralkatorrik and Zhaitan hindered any travels into Elona. Now Zhaitan's gone, so Joko will probably be involved in killing Kralkatorrik.

Also, it's important to note that Zhaitan was at war with Joko beforehand. Seems like Joko ended up being helped by the PC again.

PVE/PVP balance was so horrific that they had to eventually make them separate from each other in some cases. It's one thing to have a skill imbalance that absolutely wrecks NPC monsters. Players love that and nobody really complains except when it wrecks the economy. But in competitive PVP, you can wind up with tactics that are cheap, gimmicky, unbeatable, etc...

I'm usually all for PVP balancing except when ANet nerfed my ninja monk. That was my absolutely favorite build of all time and I died a little when it happened. *sad_face*

The Iron Kingdoms system uses a similar 'pick two classes at starting' system. It leads to a lot of fun and interesting combinations. Each class comes pre-specialized (except for two or three in the expansion material), so you can create nearly any concept you can imagine.

In GW1, my main started as a Warrior-Elementalist who used Earth and Air magics to buff himself for increased speed and durability. When Nightfall came out, that changed to Warrior/Dervish, relying on Dervish's passive enchantments.

I really like the idea of mandatory multi-classing. It's why I favor Iron Kingdoms as my preferred system/setting.

600/smite being broken was the biggest slap in the face in terms of balance changes. assassins kept shadow form farming and running, and monks got shit on. what's worse is that monks aren't even brought to any sc except doa.
>>
>>52050938
>I'm usually all for PVP balancing except when ANet nerfed my ninja monk.

Christ, I remember when they nerfed monk into the ground in PvP. Shit made me sad too.

Honestly tho, I wish GW2 would skill split more--trying to balance across 3 different game modes (it could be argued that raids is a "4th") is killing build diversity. GW1 was right on that much at least.
>>
>>52053595
Kormir...would have been better if we just saw more of her. Fuck all of you. I thought I was over it. 7 years of my life, 2005-12. I mapped every corner of every zone - before Factions, before there was a title for it, just because I loved Guild Wars ("Prophecies" was a retcon!)

>GW spoiled me. I can't play MMOs any more. What do you mean I'm locked into my choices and can't reset? Why do I need more than 8 skills?
>Factions sucked. Can't run anywhere, hit level 20 too fast, escort missions, fedex quests, focus is on alliances instead of guilds, there is no horizon outside Shing Jea...but whoever did the Luxon side deserves a medal.
>Nightfall was good. Kormir can go suck all the dicks, assuming she can find any on account of being blind.
>EOTN was the beginning of the end. It was OK, but I didn't like asura and hated what they did to the dwarves.
>Preordered 2. Tried it several times. Can't.

Nostalgia is one hell of a drug.

Alright. Brainstorming in the system I'm most familiar with, D&D 3+.

Energy's closest equivalent is probably psionic power points. Max pool is determined by level (rather than gear). Recovery / round of combat is determined by primary class. Skill costs are locked, so your main concern is blowing your whole load at once and then just flopping around with weapon attacks while you wait for regen. Adrenaline is a separate pool, generated by connecting with an attack or taking damage (or being hit, since tracking life % is probably going to suck IRL). Assassin attacks are grouped as primary/secondary/etc and have additional effect if used in the correct order. Skills are grouped by discipline. Leveling up gives characters points to distribute between disciplines. Changing a secondary uses a less painful/slow version of the retraining rules. Picking your skills can be done during any "long" rest.

The biggest pain is going to be finding equivalent spells/feats/powers to translate GW skills, but I'm sure the vast majority of /tg/'s population is autistic enough for the task.
>>
>>52053918
I had decent luck with Ele/Monk, using the larger mana pool to fuel a lot of the high-end smiting. But on the whole, the nerf hurt *bad*. And they never did get around to nerfing touch-rangers.

He was supposed to die due to the Flameseeker Prophecies. He got killed because the lich conspired with the evil dwarves. Preventing this would require defeating the lich early, or for there to be no prophecy/lich/charr storing Orr/etc.

Hypothetically, though? You get an Ascalon Settlement that holds quite a bit more political power, if only as a government in exile. Krytan nobility is forced to pay more attention to it, if only because Rurik is royalty. Assuming things quiet down instead of going along the game's trajectory, you can have a question as to who is the legitimate ruler of (what's left of) Ascalon - the kings were elected, but the end of Adelbern's rule was seen as more and more erratic/fanatical by the subjects. If the settlement lasts long enough and there is actually anything of Ascalon still worth fighting for, Rurik could even gather an army and go back to retake land from the charr. With military victories and/or land under his belt, he would have an even stronger claim to be (elected) king. That's a perfect setup for Ascalonian civil war with the threat of the charr still hanging in the background, possibly regrouping to strike down the (exhausted) winner.

Assuming the existing lore trajectory is followed, where Ascalon is overrun by charr / spirit nuked by Adelbern to the point it's not salvageable, you get an extra party in the Krytan power struggles between the Shining Blade and the White Mantle. Rurik doesn't have to pick a side, but both parties will likely be courting him as a potential ally or sizing him up as a thread. Hell, there could even be a faction to elect Rurik king of Kryta, which would definitely fit the real-world legend that gives Rurik his name (how vikings were invited to rule over Rus, eventually resulting in the Rurikid dynasty).

In any case, Rurik and the Ascalonians would have a much greater chance to survive as a cohesive settlement/culture well into the future.

>The bad guys aren't bad if you ignore the bad things they do

There's a lot of hints even in North Kryta that the White Mantle are somewhere between corrupt and negligent rulers. They put on a good face towards Ascalon in the early game but once you get past Lion's Arch and see them at work in their homeland things get fishy almost immediately.

>>52034384

Rurik was a very proactive ruler who spoke of regrouping in Kryta in order to recapture Ascalon in the future, and there's no reason to believe he didn't mean it. He wanted a future for his people that didn't involve a generation or more of fighting charr for the blasted ruins of their home, but he wasn't giving up. He also had a strong relationship with Deldrimor, which means after the defeat of the Stone Summit he would've had mostly unimpeded passage through the Shiverpeaks. The problem is, the White Mantle are probably not going to appreciate having a firebrand ideologue who is potentially sympathetic to the cause of the Shining Blade running a settlement in the middle of their corrupt puppet government for a race of detached immortals who see humans as tools at best. If Rurik made it to Kryta, he probably would've caused more problems for the Ascalon Settlement than anything.

>Legend.

I wish to God they'd managed to finish it.

What a shame.

Sylvari Revenants are pretty cool.

Very loreful.

Man, like Asians even count.

My favourite race/profession combination.
Gw2 sort of fumbled with on how they wrote the races because there are some discrepancies on how certain professions fit.
Humans and Sylvari have an anything goes position
Norn mostly resemble humans, except their shamanistic spirituality and approach to magic doesn't support elementalists, necromancers and mesmers quite as well, but it sort of works.
For Asura it's completely unerstandable to be a caster because of magitek, and an engineer, but the physical classes do not fit them as a whole at all.
Then we have Charr with a general problem and uneasy disposition with use of magic, which should along casters also rule out Guardian and Revenant.

>still sleeps with women though.
he might as well just write: 'I couldn't get laid as a guy, so now I'm larping as a women to pick up lesbians'

Kinda makes it an extra shame that GW2 was such a shit-show. I certainly don't want to interact with the real world if this is what people are enabling these days.

I mean, you could make the case for Asuras to be thiefs, and the Charr have a strong elementalist tradition, whether they want to admit it or not.

As we're in bump limit now I just want to say that I loved this thread and every one of you who posted here and talked about things, whether they were pleasant or less so.

Best guy right here.

I can see a case being made for Norn elementalists calling upon elemental spirits (not unlike WoW shamans). Mesmers could emulate the trickster nature of the Fox or Raven.

I tried my hand at a white mantle space marine. What do you guys think?

My favorite Mesmer build was Mesmer/Assassin. Take all the assassin 'Dagger' spells and an interrupt or two, max out fast-casting, and machine-gun dirt cheap direct damage.

Dervish/Mesmer is beautiful. Illusion of Weakness, the Dervish enchant that's basically the same thing, and Illusory Weapons as your elite.
