Friendly reminder! At the end of the day, third party supplements need to be easily understood by GMs to approve them or not, and needs to be simple during playthrough!

It's important that at the end of playtesting, that a single round of attacking or doing other actions isn't hugely more onerous than other classes attacking!

Is there anything stopping a 5th-level character from creating a trompe l'oeil of a CR 30 creature, such as Nocticula?

Hey, guys. After some fairly intense internal discussion, Forrest and I have sadly decided that Spirited Swordsmanship is going to be cut. It made the class far too single-attribute dependent, especially when combined with all the other things Charisma can be added to with further feat support. We know this is going to suck for a lot of people, and we, personally, were huge fans of the SAD playstyle, but it's proven to be impossible to balance. This should also make Self pact slightly less overwhelming, as they'll need to split their resources between their attacking/damaging stat and their casting/defensive stat, even with Altered Life.
Related to this, Aether Grasp will now be finessable, so as to avoid an unnecessary feat tax for dexterity builds wanting to dabble in it.

Further, we'll be reducing their damage dice to d6, like the Warlock, to try to rein in their numbers a bit. This also serves to weaken Overcharge Modulation and Merciful Pulse appropriately. How this will interact with Aspirant and Betrothed, we're not yet certain - but for reasons brought up earlier, we won't be reducing the damage dice to the awfully hard to acquire d3. We'll let you know what we work out, but we won't push this update live until we've sorted that out.

Finally, we'll be removing Steel's Betrayal for now from the document. While we love the concept, and hope to introduce something similar in the future, its current form is effectively damage with no penalty.

We're still discussing a lot of other changes, and these are all in flux - and thus, ripe for feedback. As always, we thank you for your feedback, and we are earnestly sorry for any builds we will be disrupting with these balance changes.

That still makes overcharge too good and a basic or worse-yet shapeless pulse too bad.

New Basic at level 12 would be 6d6
Blast @CL = 12d6 = 42 (only enough to kill CR4s that fail their saves).

Barrage = 3x 6d6 = 63. That's very low. Luckily it can get static bonuses, but if you have just +6 in the damage stat that's 81 damage. NOT impressive.

Overcharge remains necessary in order to do damage dealing, but at the same time, it's just costing a single feat. Too much for too little?
The above Barrage, Overcharged, is only doing 112. Still not a kill shot, and you'd still need two rounds for CRs 9-12 inclusive.
But, on the other hand, that's +31 damage from a single feat alone.

What I'm seeing here is a lack of 'warlock rods' and other such implements that even kineticists have access to. This allows WBL to get eaten up, and allows the actual firepower to go up a notch. All of the balancing is being done on the pulse value and the overcharge values themselves, making every small change a massive swing.

I think barrage is the one being checked with calculations so much because it's the non-weapon-using single target option. Practically the only one really for range right now, and it's got the biggest multipliers.

It's up to the GM to balance an encounter towards the party's strengths and weaknesses. If your character gets gimped hard and has no chance of making it, it's more the fault of the GM than the player. (This isn't a constant though, for example one player could be overoptimizing and outshining all the others in every situation and the GM is forced to up encounter difficulty which subsequently wipes the party, all because one guy had to play optimized)

Overall, the class is, at this point, overtuned. We certainly aren't nerfing it to unplayability, but the point of this class is to be /used/, and used in games alongside classes like the Inquisitor, Alchemist, Bard, and Vigilante on the Paizo side of things, and maybe stuff like (non-PoW) Soulknives, Psychic Warriors, and the like on the DSP side of things.

Everyone involved on the writing side of things really liked the SADness of the class initially, but in the end, we think that's one of the biggest roots of the problems with the class. We want to deliver a product that works for many different group styles and optimization levels, rather than one that warps the game around it, like the present playtest Avowed has proved to do.

HOWEVER, as many of you in this thread have pointed out, there's no quick and easy fix. We're making some changes to start with, but also stepping back and looking at stuff like, say, AoE damage being insufficient, lowered dice making some weapon shapes not super usable, and similar things.

I see no reasoning for extremely low point buy. It's not a matter of party vs. the world it's the party when compared to one another. Low point buy widens the gap between good and bad classes no matter what you do because class such as the fighter are more reliant on stats than full casters like the wizard. Without a few extra points a fighter can not afford enough int to have more than 2 skill ranks per level if he wants 16 strength.

Poor resources make the difference between the weak and the string wider. 15pb is lower than the system assumes you should function at.

This becomes even more pronounced if someone doesn't want to play an optimal race. A dwarf sorcerer or bard becomes essentially impossible for example because they can't afford the charisma, particularly a sorcerer who is reliant on spell DCs.

Really it is just restrictive for no good reason I haven't seen you present a good reason. Being able to make a campaign to accommodate it isn't a pro in its direction if anything it is an admission there is a problem.

This is probably true, I talked it over with the GM and we'll switch to 20 PB lvl 2 start.

Synopsis is that you're an semi-amnesiac in an old western style town with a hidden mystery about it. Anything else is literally spoilers. Guns are commonplace but you don't get them at start. (unless Gunslinger) though not every bad guy is gonna use them, even with the option. Guns are revolvers level tech...but 'magic' with magic instead of gunpowder. Races are unrestricted on a case-by-case basis but if you play something outside of core expect to be pestered by people being weirded out a lot.

Also, we're using Elephant-in-the-room Feat-Tax fixes because we don't hate fun.

Except higher point buy makes less options traps. Yes, a 25 PB character is going to be more powerful than a 15 PB character, but a 15 PB monk isn't going to be able to do much while a 25 PB monk is.

During the Reign of Winter that I ran the 15 point build was instituted after a near TPK cause "hey they say its for the heroic NPCs". Guess what? They all died. All of them
15 points aren't satisfactory for most characters, unless of course the DM does some impressive scaling and is very conscientious of the lack of raw stats, particularly amongst characters focus on more than one stat.

Further, how is 25 pb "beefier" when you are capped on what your max stats for Character creation are? Unless you're saying that somehow having 18 Str and 16 Con at 1st level is gamebreaking, in which case you obviously have no sense of how this system actually works.

All increased pb does is allow you more flexible spread in ability modifiers, making it actually possible to build MAD character like Monks, or to have a martial character that actually has an above 8 in his mental stats so he isn't a drooling retard, can do some skills out of combat, while still being able to do his job as a mainline combatant properly.

If the DM were good at his job, he'd be able to instead run a point buy where character can be useful at their jobs and not totally useless at others without being overwhelmed. IF the DM must do this 24/7 rather then occasionally when needed, then it is a problem not of the players, but of the GM for putting the players in this situation.

Combined Aegis and Stalker levels to get my critical multiplier on a railgun to x5. GM allowed strikes to fire heavy weapons, which was fine, until we got to Phantom Sunstorm + Twisting Wind Shot.

Automatic threat that only fails to confirm on a 1... maximized damage, and 12d8 I think it was base damage on the weapon.

And that's when the king got scry-sniped through his castle's outer walls by a distance weapon.
And the inner adamantine walls.
And three floors and who knows how many rooms of the castle itself.

For over 500 damage.

The setting is on a small and personal scale a la Dungeon Meshi. The world has already been razed once, and an ancient empire spanning most of the setting has sunken underneath the earth. Centuries later, people've begun digging back into countless ruins, discovering a culture that placed great emphasis on arts and craftsmanship.

The PCs are "Restorers", who make a living out of diving into ruins hiding monsters lost to the ages, and ghosts trapped since before recorded history, in order to retrieve paintings and statues, restore them to glory, and discover the lost past.

Pathfinder is mostly about single-classing. I think that a Slayer might wind up being the simplest thing, but all they do is damage.

I actually recommend being a Bard to start. It's IMPOSSIBLE to fuck up a Bard because even if you build your character SO poorly that you can't fight physically, can't cast spells and can't use skills (Bards are incredibly diverse and get to play with every type of scene which is also a thing that makes them a great intro class), you will still be able to Inspire Courage for the party and beef them up. You can never, ever be useless.

Looking into this more while they are leveling up to second level is apparently a bad idea.

There's no real tank role in the game, and if there were, this would be a very bad party to try it in, with an optimized Druid and Paladin alongside a Cleric. Everyone can heal, no one is made of glass except the arcanist, one of them is TWO meatshields, and they can be trying to do melee ahead of a tank the whole time.
