>we're playing Observer Effect
>have already experienced the first time loop, party pretty much understands what they need to do to stop the incursion
>first thing party does is grab an axe from one of those emergency fire containers and cut up Dee's wires and throw it in the back of the van they brought
>DEA agent gets in a fistfight with some of the scientists as they try to prevent them from taking the computer
>security guards starts taking potshots at the party, they all pile in the van
>guy with best driving skill fails roll, van crashes into side of concrete gate
>they all pile out and breach the main building, all of them going in different entrances
>FBI agent #1 walks through the main door, instantly dies from burst of 5.56
>DEA agent takes cover in a doorway, takes a 9mm to the shoulder and passes out, bleeds out a few rounds later
>FBI agent #2 tries to shoot M4 guy, gun jams, gets shot through the wall and dies next turn
>EPA analyst tries to shoot MP5 guard, gun jams, takes a 9mm to the chest and bleeds out a few rounds later
>literal TPK from two glorified mall cops
>>
>>51987559
When we played it took every time loop. Half the party got sucked up by the Azathoth blob because they were out of Willpower (thanks to the constant 'POW save and lose D4 WP and SAN' rolls) and taking a nap in the car while the other two agents went inside to kill everyone. The rest of the team ran away and hid in the woods after killing the researchers, and since they weren't "observing" the effect anymore due to temporary insanity, the portal closed with nobody watching it and mini-Azathoth got slurped back up.

>literal TPK from two glorified mall cops

Not really a problem (besides the SAN damage) unless the last 'save point' was after they got shot, right? Also if I remember correctly from the briefing, the guards at the array are combat veterans, hardly "glorified mall cops".
>>
>>51988253
I just had it so that it went to the final time loop where perfect communion was reached, and the agents woke up in a world where the array never existed. They still kept all those SAN losses though.
>>
>>51987559
>crit fail means the gun jams

There's artistic license and then there's just plain absurd. A weapon with even a 1/100 chance of jamming on a given shot would be considered an unreliable piece of garbage, certainly not something a government agent or professional would carry. The military makes some seriously boneheaded procurement decisions, but even their most fragile weapons systems don't fail one out of a hundred times if properly maintained.
>>
>>51988302
Is it really absurd if the enemies also have to follow this rule? I'm aware pretty much no firearm bar a Hi-Point or INSAS would actually jam that often, but it mixes combat up a little and my players are fine with it.
>>
Has anyone done a successful Delta Green Hastur run? I want to transition from night floors into Carcosa but keep similar themes after those games.
>>
>>51988302
And what would happen on a crit-failed firearms test, in your game?
>>
>>51989739
I am currently leading my players into a Hastur campaign as of now. Most of them have already read the King in Yellow due to finding the play during Future/Perfect so now I'm just interspersing apparitions and certain themes during investigations. I think I'm gonna have them make a set of investigators for a 1995 Night Floors, and then have their current characters play A Volume of Secret Faces searching for those characters.

I've done the late night car apparition already. Using sticky notes to communicate things with only one player really does a good job of adding tension.

>Is it really absurd if the enemies also have to follow this rule?

Yes. A silly rule is silly whether or not it's uniformly applied.
>>
>>51992030
>drop the gun
Wouldn't that be mechanically exactly the same as your gun jamming? They're both basically rendering your gun unusable for a turn, the only difference being what you're trying to do during the turn. Although, shooting a friendly is a pretty interesting crit fail consequence. I'll have to keep that mind next time we play.

Also
>that pic
I always knew Dennis Detwiller was a tracing hack.
>>
>>51992030
>drop the gun
There's artistic license and then there's just plain absurd. A shooter with even a 1/100 chance of dropping his weapon on a given shot would be considered an untrained piece of garbage, certainly not something a government agent or professional would be. The agencies make some seriously boneheaded recruitment decisions, but even their most inexperienced agents don't fail one out of a hundred times if properly trained.
>>
>>51992182
>copypasta

There's artistic license and then there's just plain absurd. An anonymous user with even a 1/100 chance of iterating on someone else's joke by changing a few words would be considered a shitposting piece of garbage, certainly not a meme worth reposting. The janitors make some seriously boneheaded decisions, but even their most inexperienced hotpockets don't fail one out of a hundred times if properly microwaved.

The simplified skill list is more reminiscent of 7e. The removal of some of the primary statistics (EDU, SIZ) as far as I can tell isn't based on any of the other games but is certainly welcome.

However if anything a lot of the design choices seem more taken from Eclipse Phase (crit on doubles, blackjack for opposed tests, etc) than any of the other CoC editions.
>>
>>52000995
Rules wise new DG is basically a combination of CoC 6e and Unknown Armies and is intended to be fully backwards compatible with 6e so you can easily port old scenarios into the new system.
>>
>>52002556
>fully backwards compatible with 6e

This isn't the case. A quick look at the 6e monster manuals will show that there are enough changes to the stats system, the HP and damage numbers, and the way the combat system works that you can't just move content from one to the other. With the new magic system incoming, based on what's been posted behind the authors' various patreon paywalls, scenarios which require magic are also going to have to be rewritten. Yes, it's easy to port things but that's a far cry from 'fully backwards compatible'
>>
>>52002650
I ran Cold Dead Hand a few weeks ago with the new DG rules and the only thing that took any significant effort porting over were a few skills for the PCs.
>>
>>51999423
It's a separate system now, and I find it simpler than CoC. Doesn't really matter, though. Anyway, if you're interested, leave a throwaway email. I'll contact you and put you through to the GM.

So, in 7th edition CoC it's impossible to fire more than 5% of a mingun without jamming it. Since every preceding shot is fired with an additional penalty die you'll eventually be rolling with two penalty die on an extreme success to hit. Thus, you'll probably hit a fumble soon enough.

How do we remedy this? Fully auto-fire is clearly broken for high capacity machine guns.
>>
>>52002793
>the only thing that took any significant effort porting over were a few skills for the PCs.

Doesn't matter. If it took any changes at all, the game is by absolute definition not fully backwards compatible.
>>
>>52005040
You remove crit fail tables unless taking lots o san checks?

I've got 4-5 people together for a game of Call of Cthulhu that we're planning on playing over the web together. All of us are pretty inexperienced though, so I was wondering if anyone here would be interested in being GM for a group of people new to tabletop? a lot of us are girls

In most of the published material for CoC Shub Niggurath is the goddess of either self castration or fucking as hard as you possibly can. See the Cthulhu Now scenarios about Mother's Milk or the Delta Green sourcebook with the Skoptsi

Both are extrapolating a lot from the original mythos texts. Shubby is only ever really described obliquely, as a sort of "sophisticated astarte" or "magna mater"
>>

Well, just don't namedrop anything. Maybe replace self-castration with general self-mutilation, and sex with violence. Nothing will really change.

I have one member in my group who autistically compiled a list of a bunch of different firearms and gave them stats based on their real life counterparts. It's interesting to see how different people focus on different aspects of table top based on what they like.
>>
>>52008650
>>52008944
What kind of shit do you put in your games normally that your players can't distinguish between creepy sex stuff done in service to a Lovecraftian fertility goddess and stuff you want to jack off to?
>>
>>52013483
I almost never go over sexual content in my games, it's just that my players are pretty immature.
>>
>>52012205
Do you happen to have that list? The most I ever really get into gunwank in DG is having the actual names for the guns instead of generic stuff like assault rifle, heavy pistol, shotgun etc.

>>52011399
DG is split into The Program and The Group. The Program is official, formed after MJ-12 was dissolved after 9/11. They're well funded but the players are gonna have to contend with complying with superiors who probably don't know what they're dealing with and will try to get the PCs to capture Mythos stuff so it can be repurposed instead of DG usual M.O. of just torching everything or locking it in a Green Box.

The Group is mostly older agents who were too paranoid to join The Program and decided to continue working illegally. They're pretty much working on their own, but work more or less like the DG we're used to. I don't know if they still use cells though.
>>
>>52013496
Then that's their problem, if you really want to run a Shub scenario I guess warn them that there's gonna be some sexual themes and/or lean into the horrific aspects more than the sexual ones.

You can't really cut sex out entirely if you're dealing with something that is most commonly interpreted as a fertility goddess, it's like running a Naked Goddess scenario in Unknown Armies and asking "How do I do this without mentioning porn?"
>>
>>52013577
That explanation had no relation to the question and didn't answer it. It was completely unnecessary.

The Old Guard still uses cells, but it serves no purpose and is largely due to tradition AFAIK. The question is, what does the New Blood use officially.

I suppose, since it's a clearance level once again, the authorities just assemble task forces, working groups, teams and other bands of people with that clearance as necessary and designate it in whatever way fits. That'd make sense.
>>
>>52013729
You asked if DG still uses cells, I explained that there are two DGs in the new DG books. One doesn't use cells, the other might and most likely can if that's how you want to flavor it.

Impossible Landscapes seems like a good one in particular because the guy running the scenario is also the guy who wrote it.

>go camping innawoods with bros
>set up a nice camp in a nice clearing, chill, the usual deal
>about to go to sleep

>wind is surprisingly strong
>already weak signal is completely fucked now
>no way we're going back in the dark through a fucking storm
>get everything soakable including ourselves innatent and cover the rest with tarps
>sit down and chill, a bro gets out a portable heater
>getting real comfy
>something's not right
>rain doesn't sound as it should
>peek out
>almost like flapping
>peek out some more out of curiosity
>a couple of black shapes crash inside the tent and start flapping all over the place
>through sheer luck catch them and throw out
>bats
>the storm and thunder must have woke them up from their trees, or whatever
>there's literally dozens of them outside, flapping
>flapping and fucking screeching, fuck my sensitive hearing
>zip the tent shut and sit there, in a small cloud of bats, after a couple hours finally go to sleep

I have a boring life so this is when I was spooked the most. Don't know about bats, so no idea if that happens often or not.

As of the scenario, replace bats with nightgaunts. Boom, a small group of people has to survive a bunch of nighgaunts hunting them in the wilderness, at night, in a storm, with very limited resources. Maybe have a sabdbox-ish layout, with a map of the general area of the forest they're in, with some features - the campsite, a pond, an abandoned cabin, a newer inhabited cabin, and such.

As a matter of fact, I should get to writing that.

Care to give an outline of the game? Simply saying it's in the ozarks doesn't really say all, that much.
Nice idea about the journal, btw. How much did that cost you?

I would think any creepy, ambient instrumental music would do. Some of the more droning tracks from Godspeed You! Black Emperor would probably work.

Tracks 2 and 3 off this album would work particularly well for some background music. Starts at 10:28

The game itself revolves around the machinations of a bizarre dream-entity, Ovilid the Pariah, who begins appearing in the dreams of people throughout the Ozark Mountains tri-state area. The more Ovilid appears to people in dreams, the more his sigil (seen in >>52037517 and >>52037691 ) starts to appear in the real world - either drawn/graffitied or, in some cases, naturally as if worn into stone or left there by someone millennia ago.

Ovilid's appearance in dreams also marks a serious uptick in Mythos activity, which are encountered by the PCs as they try to unveil the meaning of the dreams and why Ovilid has contacted them.

Ovilid's most specific instruction in the dreams of those who investigate or follow it is to uncover the secrets of a race known as The Serpents Below the Mountain, who players will later discover are basically Ozark Great Old Ones. Why it's making that directive and what it wants are ongoing mysteries.

The truth is that the stars will soon be right over the Ozarks, and it's attempting to gather enough of a following to create a cult that will perform a ritual to awaken the Serpents Below. Pretty standard campaign stuff, really.

Oh, and the journal was 8 bucks and the many, many disposable pens I keep chewing up out of nervous habit.

Nope, not that one. This one is a 1920s adventure set I think during Mardi Gras. It's a big ol' mansion hosting a masquerade ball.

Night floors is fucking great though if you're interested in carcosa at all. Honestly the Hastur in Delta Green is my favorite part of Delta Green. All of the other lore and scenarios I like better in CoC. Rules in DG are better though.

Anyone else enjoy other Cthulhu related /tg/ material outside of PnP? I'm almost caught up with Eldritch Horror expansions, the game is really fantastic. They really need to release Nyarlathotep as an Ancient One though.

I try to keep my eyes peeled for interesting weird fiction. Alot of Stephen Kings short stories offer useful material for games (or just a spooky read in general that's more cosmic horror than "BOO A GHOST"), but I don't see much else. Seems like the 80's/90's were a high point for that kind of thing.

>Eldritch Horror
What's the game play like for that? I remember I played Arkham Horror years ago and had some fun with that but I don't really remember it. The website makes the game remind me of something kind of like sunless sea.

Setting/campaign riff idea: The investigators are private detectives in Innsmouth, 1940s. However, the idea is not to bust the EOD or thwart the Deep Ones or anything like that - they're Innsmouth natives, they largely know about all of that. The serious trouble starts when the Deep Ones and the Cultists and so on break the law. Innsmouth is a thriving community with a weird church - but the law applies there as much as anywhere. How many cases can the investigators close while keeping Innsmouth safe before the madness drags them down?

You could also have them square off against Mi-Go, Yog-Sothoth cultists, or other potentially antagonist mythos threats.
>>
>>52062412
Private investigators don't solve crimes, they dig up information for clients.

Now, if they're sort of plainclothes agents for the town elders, that could be interesting. Tracking down spies and apostates, settling disputes among the deep ones, and steering away or disappearing curious outsiders could be good storylines.

Basically playing the opposite side of the typical CoC investigation.
>>
>>52062492
That's kind of what I was thinking, more other Mythos threats than Deep One Crimes All The Time.

>>52062520
Fair point. I was thinking more the movie/TV stereotype of private investigators, which is to police what mercenaries are to military. They'd probably get hired by a lot of different clients to do a lot of different things, so your ideas are also good!

It's pretty fun. Seems complicated at first, but after a few games the rules and setup click. Fantasy Flight made it as a successor to Arkham Horror, aiming to decrease the time spent playing the board's turn. It boils down to three phases: investigators deciding two actions each (moving, healing, buying, etc), investigators each getting their turns encounter (fight monsters, explore cities, get clues, solve mysteries), and then having bad shit happen based on a card from the enemy deck.

It is a lot of fun and very dynamic. Each old one makes the game different thanks to unique encounters for each of them. The game is still a major time investment at general 2-4 hour play time, but I have heard it doesn't drag along as much as Arkham Horror.

Not who you replied to, but as far as expansions go, shoot for the small box, ones first. Forsaken Lore, Strange Remnants and Signs of Carcosa are all pretty solid, and cheaper than the ones with side boards you'll rarely use.

As far as I am concerned, Forsaken Lore is as mandatory a buy as an expansion can be if you enjoy a board game. The core package is great for a couple playthroughs to get a feel for the game, but the additions from Forsaken Lore really expand the replayability to addiction levels. The additions to each Ancient One in particular are the most glaring: 16 more clue encounter cards (from 8), 2 more mysteries (from 4), and more special encounter decks allow multiple playthroughs against the same antagonist without feeling repetitive. Every Ancient One since Forsaken Lore has followed the 6 or more mysteries and 24 clue encounter trend, so the core box ones will feel really bare without Forsaken Lore.

I've played the first 4 stories in 'Mythos Tales' and I can say it's pretty awesome. Captures the Lovecraft theme pretty well.

That seems to be the consensus with the rest of the EH community. Certainly makes the base game feel pretty bare bones once you incorporate all of the new cards.

Have you played with any of the big box expansions? Got Under the Pyramids a couple weeks back because it was about $30 on Amazon, and while I enjoyed it, the side board felt under utilized to an extent. Perhaps it was just the mysteries we needed to solve... Overall there was a pretty cool and cohesive story though, which I loved.

I tried out the Dreamlands a few weekends ago. It was a lot of fun, but it's probably the most interesting sideboard thematically. It feeds well into the Mythos feel of the game, and it connects into the main board through three dynamically placed dream portals, so it is not stuck in one area of the main board all game (like MoM or UtP).

They're quite fun, but hardly necessary though. Getting the small expansions makes the base game incredibly varied, and the game gets pretty crowded with two boards on the table. I'm really just picking up the big board expansions when I find a good deal on them, mostly for the content that feeds into the base game. The side boards are a bonus for me. I picked up Under the Pyramids for 25 dollars recently, feels good man.
