>Thread Topic:Who is your favorite token-centric commander?
>>
Hello, I apologize for my ignorance.

I want to do two things.

1. Catalog my cards by scanning them under a smartphone app to add them to a database.

2. Order proxies of some cards I already own, I would be playing with some of them unsleeved so they would need to be the right dimensions and feel mostly like a magic card. I have ~50 I would like to make

I would appreciate it very much if anyone could point me to any community trusted resources for these things.

Thank you.
>>
>>51968055
>Playing with some of them unsleeved
Y tho
>>
>>51968097
Because I am trying to make 32 decks for all the combos and I can't afford cards, proxies, and sleeves for all of them. I am sleeving the most valuable decks with real cards please don't hate me.
>>
>>51968133
If you can't afford to SLEEVE 32 decks, you shouldn't own 32 decks.
>>
>>51968146
I also dislike playing with sleeves, I prefer the cardboard. Each time this question is asked the discussion is always about the sleeves I don't like sleeves I don't want to sleeve all of my decks all of the time please stop the sleeves.
>>
>>51967990

I play Angry Omnath as my "real" commander in my Mina and Denn Deck. Let me tell you having Parallel Lives out while Blade of Selves is Equiped to Omnath again 5 opponents? There is no better feeling.
>>
>>51968162
Just be aware that it's super fucking weird.

If your argument was "I don't like sleeves", whatever, you do you. Your argument was "I cannot afford to sleeve 32 decks", and if you can't afford to sleeve 32 decks, how the fuck are you able to BUY them? Maybe make a few decks at a time instead of trying to build 32 at once, especially if they're gonna be 50% proxies.
>>
>>51967990
>>Thread Topic:Who is your favorite token-centric commander?
I want to say its rith because those dragons are my favorite
I want to say marath because its my t1.5/t2 multi player deck
but really its Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper MLD who is just a titania deck with two more colors
titania is tight as fuck.
>>
>>51968180
Wouldn't the legend rule kill them all?
>>
>>51968193
>argument
>can't afford to sleeve 32
>Just be aware that it's super fucking weird.

THE SLEEVES WHY DO THEY DO THIS TO PEOPLE

Arguements. Weirdness. Buying and affording.

I don't care it's all just words. Let's render it. I don't want to spend the money on sleeves when I could use them on cards because I don't think that the protective value sleeves offer are worth the purchasing price, especially considering I like the tactile feel and play of sleeveless cards. Also considering because my question co-asks about proxies with tactile feel which is the point.

Why. Why the sleeves. It's always the sleeves.
>>
>>51968229
Exactly.
>>
>>51968229
All but one, and that's the point. In the stated situation, he'd get 8 token copies of Omnath, all of which would immediately die. Each one would trigger itself, and the other 7, so that's 64 triggers doing 3 damage each.
>>
>>51968229

It does, yes. But that triggers Locus of Rage's second ability, which when Omnath or an Elemental you control dies Omnath deals 3 damage to Target Creature or Player. Each Omnath copy sees itself and all the other Omnath tokens die, and the real Omnath, assuming you keep him, see them all die as well. Do the math.
>>
>>51968245
I'll break it down for you.

1) It's really odd to see someone playing without sleeves, because your cards will get de-fucking-stroyed without them. I still have cards from High School, when we didn't buy sleeves because there was nowhere TO buy them, and compared to the cards I've owned since using sleeves they are beaten to shit. If you don't care about your cards being damaged, that's fine, but they're gonna get fucked up, and marked.

2) It's going to be very hard for you to make the proxy thing work beyond sharpie-on-basic, because unless you shell out for really good "this is intended to be a counterfeit" level proxies, they are going to be much glossier and feel very different out of the sleeve

3) If money is an issue, maybe build 8 decks and work towards the other 24, instead of going from 0 decks to 32 overnight.
>>
>>51968272
Oh, and 8 triggers from the original, so 72 total.
>>
>>51968310
>because unless you shell out for really good "this is intended to be a counterfeit" level proxies

Where and how much?
>>
>>51968340
Not gonna tell you. If you insist on playing with fake cards, you can do your own fucking research.
>>
>>51968340

We call the sellers chinamen for something, anon
>>
>>51968354
That is precisely what I am doing, at this very moment.

I wanted to ask the community and speak to people, as is the best way to live life and get the barest pointers of where to do further research.

But, as has happened before, someone was actively hostile because of the mention that I play, some portion of, my cards without sleeves.

I understand the conception of entropy and the physical manipulation of matter.

Will you, or someone, please help me?

>>
>>51968272

Your math is slightly off, because Myriad in this case would only make 3 tokens which would then be doubled by Parallel Lives for six Tokens for a total of 41 triggers of 3 damage each which makes 123 damage total.

Which is still pretty fucking sweet.
>>

Okay, I derped that. I thought he meant a 5 player pod. I'm also going to recheck my math anyways.
>>
>>51968722
Eh, it's in that realm of "You're all dead, and I'm not bothering to do the math unless i fucking have to"
>>
>>51968684
>>51968722

Double checking my math it's 216 damage total after 72 triggers. For 4 opponents in a 5 man pod which is what I originally read it as it is 42 triggers for 126 damage.

Any thing else I messed up?
>>
>>51968787
It's more than 42 triggers. Each Omnath's death triggers itself, the original, and the other 7 copies, so you have 8 sets of 9 triggers.

It takes a blood sacrifice to set up, and since they program cards in one at a fucking time you can't always build your decks there.
>>
>>51969264
Yes. I kept a low profile throughout the game so he spends his resources on other people, which worked well right up to the point where the two players both use their "Lose the game: target player loses the game" ability on me simultaneously.
Another thing that annoys me is that my strongest deck by far which is good at preventing this crap is also the most boring one I have. Green turbo ramp that always plays the same.

Because it's against the norm.
People are going to be confused when you go against the norm. In something like Magic where you're paying $20+ for a piece of cardboard, not protecting them is strange. I get owning the card and using a deck of proxies but good proxies are expensive.

Also, he got mad at you for saying you can't afford to sleeve your decks, which is true. A pack of "quality" sleeves like Dragonshields are $10 for a pack of ~105. It would be an extra $10 per deck, or $320 plus tax. A whole EDH deck can easily cost that much. If you're so worried about money, I'd either not build 32 decks, or buy sleeves to protect them. If you prefere the feel of unsleeved cards go you, but don't expect to be able to sell those cards later for near their full value.

You know, as much as I like tokens in real magic, I don't think I've ever built a token deck in commander. I guess my Karlov was kind of close at one point when it had a token subtheme to help trigger soul sisters but I was being spread kind of a thin and I cut them since they were probably the weakest piece of the deck.

Fuckloads of land hate and blue zombies. The commanders are just jank as fuck but thats the point of the formst.
>>
>>51971314
Honestly is there much to build around with the two? Ludevic wants to be built kind of like Edric so I'd maybe try some coastal piracy type effects to try and make up the difference in card draw with time walks and flying men and with red you also get extra combat steps. He also works well with face burn since your burn spell will replace itself once a turn. Kraum is mostly just a beater that guarantees you'll have SOMETHING to trigger ludevic with I guess as far as their synergy with each other, but he asks absolutely nothing of you to build around him. I guess he works well with counterspells which can in a roundabout way force the opponent to cast multiple spells?

Yup, short answer is talk to him and tell him he's acting like a fun ruining bitch, then buy him a beer.

Long answer is, get another playgroup, because this guy will never change his schtick. Until someone draws more hate or is a better player, targeting him first is always the right play because otherwise he wins. Now that being said, run a very low hate janky pile of spare parts and consistently beat him. After a while he'll ask why you always win with worse cards, and explain the principle of politics. I bet he's a gruul/RUG player or a big blue.

i used to play edh, before the first precons came out. before wotc took the format and skullfucked it rawdog.

today, i miss playing with the group in its hayday. a few guys have moved sure but the core is still around. we play board games now. some of us had 5-10 decks, one guy was going for all color combinations etc. something ended up 25 decks

today i can't fathom playing the format. cards have gotten tremendously expensive. even "budget" decks run over $100 for a single deck -- board games provide so much more value for that $100, let alone the $40-70 they cost.

i thought about building 4 commander decks to play against each other, and having that as "a board game" sort of how we treat the duel decks anthology. am i nuts, or am i chasing the spirit of a game that's just gone now?

>or am I chasing the spirit of a game that's just gone now?
Pretty much this. But not because Commander is dead, it's because you've painted 'the glory days' with so much nostalgia and so much rose-colored paint that absolutely nothing could ever live up to it. Including if you could somehow go back in time to 2009 before the precons. It still wouldn't live up to the memory you've created that never actually existed.
>>
>>51973603
reactions like this are why i stopped trying to find a new playgroup. no one is interested in build restrictions, casual play. it's all RAWR FACE STOMPY NEW STUFF! every set that comes out. do you really need the 10th counterspell in that RUG deck, bro?

>>51973668
i think magic in general has just moved on, too. these last couple standards have been wet farts for me.

^these.

When the Precons came out, they may Commander accessible to my group of friends that was just getting into the game. We could finally get something to start from that wasn't utter ass or dominated by the couple of guys that had dedicated 4 decks to roughly the same playstyle that they could mash together for a single commander.

The Precons is what let my group make the move to commander from our normal shitty kitchen table 60s, with shit that should be banned from casual fun play.
>>
>>51973732
I mean, I occasionally get nostalgic for those days, but it's a GENERAL nostalgia, eating pizza with my friends while we played Commander at 2 AM with ATHF or King of the Hill playing in the background on a Saturday night in high school.

And yeah, part of me misses when we played more casually and half the playgroup wasn't building pubstomp shit, but that's nothing to do with Wizards, it's just because that's the general arms-race thing that happens with ANY format as a group gets deeper into it. And I can counter that by just hanging out with my friends who also prefer more casual games... to eat pizza and play one of our eight (instead of our 'only one') Commander decks at 2 AM on a Saturday with Netflix playing in the background.
>>
Is it possible to build a ((decent)) EDH without spending hundreds of dollars? I don't mean something tournament worthy, just something that isnt't 60 assorted commons and uncommons from standard and some basic lands.
>>
>>51973982
If you keep it to two colors, your landbase can be built very cheaply, and that's where most of the money is.
>>
>>51973982
Yes. you can make a respectable deck in pretty much any strategy for a hundred or less. Hell you can buy a precon and add like 20 bucks worth of singles if you're super lazy
>>

>i thought about building 4 commander decks to play against each other, and having that as "a board game"
do you only play a deck once or something? In my playgroup we each have like 4-5 decks and rarely build new ones.

>am i nuts, or am i chasing the spirit of a game that's just gone now?
this attitude is literally the exact opposite of the spirit of the game. Play Chess if the thought of a meta changing offends you
>>
>>51973982
There are plenty of budget options, hell, it's a singleton format. Just throw together a pile of jank and upgrade it over time. It's not like your BUG deck is unplayable if you're missing fetches.

You should also realize this format was created by a bunch of veteran players who had built up a collection of jank that sees no play in every other format, so when most people come here complaining about "budget" it's kind of on deaf ears because a lot of people who got into commander didn't spend a dime to make most of their decks.

So, few things.

1) that costs three times as much. 3 is a lot more than 1, especially for a Stax-y effect.

2) That only happens if you use the lands during someone else's turn

3) It's a "destroy" effect, so you can regenerate your land, or make it indestructible

4) It only applies to lands, rather than every permanent

5) It only applies to tapping for mana, rather than activating ANY ability

Based on what I've seen, a lot of people overcrowd their Godo decks with Equipment, when really you could run quality over quantity and devote slots to things like pumps/evasion, control-type spells, and extra combat. Helps keep mana investments down too, sucks when you tap out for a cast/Equip, only to have nothing left to tap for that Boom//Bust to secure the win.

You probably don't want to be wheeling away everyone's hands, you want precision with her ability. That means less creatures in graves not more. Pack sacrifice outlets to keep getting them back (plus sac outlets are good in reanimator anyway) and graveyard hate to make it more precise. (Stone cloaker, withered wretch). All these cards are good on their own too, so you don't feel like you fell for a trap building around a 7 mana commander that could just be hit by the next wrath before you use her.

You're not really good with rules. You can't cast the thing multiple times, since Silas' effect only effects the thing on first cast, because when it leaves gy it's entirely new object, even if it was just countered and put into gy from stack.
If Silas' ability said "when Silas deals damage name an artifact card. You may cast this turn spells from your graveyard with the chosen name", it would be entirely different.

So /edhg/

What do you do when your playgroup decides to be ultra cunts and bring almost nothing but blue fuckery cards to the table?
>>
>>51976244
Read a primer and choose to build it somewhere between stax - reanimator - aggro

No matter what you run throwing in looting effects is great because of the graveyard interactions. If you have appropriate creatures in hand cathartic reunion basically reads 'draw 3 cards'

I've built mine as a combo oriented list with some less brutal stax-y discard and land destruction like oppression, desolation, jokulhaups, painful quandary. Hushwing gryff, thalias, entropic eidolon, and felidar guardian are all interesting cards that fit the Alesha bill while slowing the game down.

Of course I have the aggro cards ready to go for when I'm feeling it. Sunforger, tajic, iroas, token generators, cathar's crusade and skullclamp is basically half that deck.

f you think bouncing a creature once per turn is effective, or a good use of your once per turn cast from graveyard trigger, you're probably playing in the lowest of power metas.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. Well, except for the thinking this is good bit. Even in a low power meta there's probably something more strategically valuable you could do once per turn. See: >>51978710.

Your group are fags if they ban eldrazi. Tell them that please.

Some other options:

>Tasigur. Who cares if it gets countered when you're just going to cast it for one mana again anyways?
>Teferi: you shut down their ability to counter you if you can land it.
>Thalia: One mana makes a huge difference. Or with her new version, tapping their lands makes a huge difference too.
>Yeva: you can now cast your stuff during their endsteps, which can give you an edge.
>Zurgo/Isamaru: kill them before they can counter everything
>Llawan Cephalid Empress: Probably not the best, but also a hilarious card. I wish they'd unban painter's servant already.
>Maelstrom Wanderer: Oh, you countered my Maelstrom Wanderer, allowing me to easily recast it and trigger cascade again?
>Prossh: countering prossh doesn't really hurt it's strategy.
>reki, the history of kamigawa: This is from personal experience: this deck can fight through counters easily, usually by timing its plays correctly. Landing a Dosan the Falling Leaf for instance, or any number of other green hate cards, like City of Solitude or Hall of Gemstone is relatively easy with your ramp, and can set you up for huge storm turns later
>Dosan the falling leaf: obvious.
>Sen Triplets: You can shut down one player a turn from casting anything. This is really useful for landing a combo. You can also use that player's counterspells to counter your opponent's counterspells.
>Ruric Thar: obvious.
>Bruna, the Fading Light: her ability is a cast trigger, and countering it only means you can resurrect another powerful angel. Her alternate form also completely shuts down most counterspells and targeted removal.
>Dragonlord Dromoka: Obvious
>gaddock Teeg: obvious. Not good against a lot of counterspells, but great against their payoff cards.
>Akroma, Angel of Fury:The most gorgeous art you've ever seen, and can completely shut down blue decks.

Rate my new Obzedat deck!

The weird cards like Damping Matrix are there because there's a lot of degenerate combo in my meta.
>>
>>51978792
the thing about blue hate cards is that they're almost outclassed by blue cards. for example, pyroblast gets countered by a counterspell, and you'll end up losing that exchange because you probably don't have blue's card advantage tech.

i'm honestly not sure what the best counter to blue degeneracy is. since edh is so high average cmc in general, counterspells are just inherently powerful. i think the best you can do is drop a ton of spells that are just not good enough to be countered. my maelstrom deck does decently against counterspell.decs because i can just a billion smaller ramp/draw/removal spells when they're spending their turns untapped, and then eventually i will have twice as much mana as them and can afford to just drop so many threats that they simply can't cast enough counterspells to deal with them all. i've had games where i've had all my shit removed for 9 turns in a row, and then finally i get a good maelstrom double cascade off while they're tapped and one-shot them.

i don't play in a 100% meta though, my maelstrom is like a 85% power level deck.

>>51978855

My ROOMMATE who got us playing the format is a salty fuck when my blue/green eats his larger casts, to the point where he scooped when I countered 2 of his spells and fogged Attraxa when he tried to swing with everything in retaliation.
Eventually, he's going to understand that our table is about to tip over in the little bit of balance it has and we'll need to make some agreements to play for fun not wins.
(Although ironically, he isn't usually the winner, our resident pillow fort is)
>>
>>51972305

Tell him to stop being a leftist and understand the law of supply and demand.

If you play a super effective combo deck, everyone will try to kill you because you always win. So then you have to include hate cards in your deck to counter their strategies. You can play combo all you want, but you have to bear in mind that everyone will hate you and try to kill you first, it's natural.

Lately its been Atraxa Superfriends but its ussually some form of UGx. Do you not understand targeting my commander 3 rounds in a row is going to result in some retaliation? He also had the nerve to call my deck a netdeck because I had a few wheels in my Yidris deck(you know, the ones that came in the precon) and that bugged me. Atraxa planeswalkers has to be the most uninspired deck ever.

roomie guy again- he doesn't run superfriends but he did make some black mods to his deck and it's a pain in the ass when he's not dealt with. Not exactly keen on letting two proliferates and counter spam out the ass sit there with a cauldron of souls.

So a couple decklists here that I'd like some help with.

First up is my first Pauper Commander list, I really wanted to play Gruul in PDH but Bloodbraid just seems dumb, so here's Ventmaw. Honestly I'm not 100% confident in the list and the direction it took it.
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/ventmaw-aggro-ramp-pdh/

And here's the second list, Omnath the ramp master. bog standard mono-green seemed a little dull to me though, and enchantments are my favourite permanent type so here's Omnath enchanter. I'm really happy with this list but other tech cards to throw in would be a great help. Considering throwing in Helix Pinnacle thanks to >>51978179.

>>51980272
Mono red is pretty weak. Goblins or artifact fuckery is about as far as you go with it. If you're looking for a fun, interesting and interactive red general Kurkesh has a very cool effect.
>>
>>51980272
Most mono-red decks are secretly mono-brown, either through Voltron or just general artifacts

>heard it was the weakest single color in edh
Now I know you're just fucking with me
>>
>>51980320
And I forgot the Omath list, what a goof.

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/omnath-the-enchanted/
>>
Planar Portal, or Planar Bridge? Bridge seems fucking great for permanents since you just cheat shit in, but Portal seems good for just grabbing stuff into your hand
>>
>>51980272
Try Zada. GlassCannon.deck but it can be hilariously fun and frustratingly awful any given game. Also when you play monored if you kill the entire board and yourself at the same time we still count that as a win for you.
>>
>>51980353
Bridge seems more efficient, although it's really down to preference.
>>

>so what do you do with the lifegain tho?

there are a few wincon cards in my list that utilize high life totals, like test of endurance and aetherflux reservoir and such. but i also use that lifegain to draw tons of cards with black's draw effects. it's nice to pop necropotence 40 times and be totally fine afterwards. it's also fun to win with an arbitrary alternate wincon like test of endurance, fits very well into orzhov's themes of being a bullshit taxman lawyer guy

lifegain isn't necessarily strong if your meta runs a lot of voltron, combo or infect style decks, but in my home meta of "smash everyone with creatures and burn" it works pretty well. i actually had a kokusho lifegain deck that was much stronger but i had to take it apart since it was so oppressive

xenagos is hard to play without being a total dick. i had him for like 4 months but ended up taking him apart. he's a very binary commander when it comes to playing the game, either he kills a player or the entire table in a single turn, or he gets fucked by spot removal over and over until he loses. i've since moved all my big gruul creatures over to a maelstrom deck, and i find that deck much more fun to play in comparison since it's a little more telegraphed and stable than xenagos is.

however, if you do want to be that guy who smashes a player with a trampling 80/80 boar token, then yeah, go right ahead and build xenagos

i can't speak for how good obzedat is, though. i'd rather build kambal or karlov or something for orzhov lifegain

i know it's not really what you asked, but the best commander for throwing gruul fatties and planeswalkers at your opponents is maelstrom wanderer. my maelstrom deck is about 90% gruul and 10% blue cards, and those blue cards are basically just dedicated to card draw.

most gruul commanders don't really support big timmy creature strats, and the ones that do are kind of subpar. i guess you can do what >>51980822 said but i recommend at least trying maelstrom wanderer on tappedout or something. here's my list if you want to goldfish: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/smashmaster-2000/

Funnily enough, I still most often win with the Sharuum combo in my Breya deck. Everyone in my playgroup's just not ever letting actual Breya stuff happen.
>>
>>51980949
I know I'm just biased against her because I don't like her, but every Breya deck I see just looks (to me, mind you) like "Sharuum.dec, with like a total of 10 red cards/cards specifically for Breya that don't really work with Sharuum".
>>
>>51980922
A good Kaalia should include MLD and pnly handful of good dragons, demons and/angels. Bad Kaalia decks should just blindly ramp into her and try to attack at sanic speeds. Kaalia should be a finisher, not treated as a bad Elvish Piper.
