Realistic proportions are stupid for illustrative purposes because art is to show details, not to mimic real life fully which can be done easily with a camera and a photoshop filter or two.

>magically-capable viewers see dramatic spirit fights and flashy burst of mana
>mundane viewers see people posing at each other as the arena explodes and the fighters gradually struggle to maneuver and pose through their growing injuries
>fashion industry gets in on this, because armor won't do much good anyways

No. Exactly the other way around. Heresy is pushing a doctrine different than the one pushed by the main authority of the religion. Blasphemy is saying or doing things that 'defile' the religion.

That doesn't make it hard, just bad. I heard for years how those games were super hard old school no holds barred bite the pillow I'm going in dry type games. Then I decided to try Demon's Souls (figured if I'm gonna try, might as well start from the beginning) and fucking hell, the actual game was almost easy at times, if you played smart.

99% of the "difficulty" came from abysmal game design where nothing was explained to you. What does that stat mean? What is this? What is that? What do you mean I can't upgrade this weapon to a fire based one anymore? Etc. The actual game is easy, trying to decipher stats and upgrades would not pass in any other game. Hell, half the time even looking up stuff with google didn't explain everything. I still don't know what's the correlation between the damage on a bow and the damage on an arrow. And the way upgrade materials are handed out (fucking chucks, man) and all upgrades are final, I'm not even gonna pretend I didn't look up upgrade guides to see what weapons were even worth pumping.

Some people consider having to do outside research to excel (such as needing to look up a build guide to stand a chance of being effective at high levels) in a game to be a positive.

Personally, I think it's retarded and a sign of bad game balance and UI design.

Trial and error gameplay and memorizing levels is also bad gameplay in my opinion. You're pretty much expected to die repeatedly until you memorize the best path forwards or learn the boss's signals, and once you do, beating them becomes a trivial exercise of exploiting their signals and knowing which way to roll and when to hit them. Bosses in that style of game always have some trick which can be as simple as "always keep to their right when they flash X signal, then hit them, then roll, then repeat". Rather than being a natural difficulty curve, this goes from impossible to easy like flipping a switch. Stupid people confuse this for mastery but it's really just memorization.

If I want to play a game of trial and error wherein you simply memorize a pattern by failing until you get it, I'll just lay down a set of match cards and match pairs like I do with my four year old sister.
>>
>>51971933
The fact that you need charts in order to plan a viable build in advance is a sign of poor balance. A well-balanced game should flexibly adapt to any build short of deliberate self-sabotage - such as buying skills you have no intention of using - which is not the same as buying skills because the UI or stats don't make clear what is useful and giving no means of undoing an upgrade.

Please. I'm not one of those /v/tards who seeks validation by making exaggerated claims about how great I am at games. I'm simply laying out that the difficulty of these games doesn't actually come from mastery of its mechanics, just memorization, much like a glorified game of matching pairs. People who talk up their challenge and difficulty don't know what a real difficulty curve should look like. Instead of gradually building skills and challenging your mastery on an increasing curve, every challenge in the game starts high and then abruptly drops off to nil. It's poor balance.
>>
>>51972024
look if you have complaints about the system they're understandable.

But the game was a throw back to older designs that didn't hold your hand. I don't have any issue with bosses having attack patterns that you need to learn and figure out especially when death is a slap on the wrist.

I have no issue with the level designs (save for a handful of areas in each game, I'm fond of how miserable the swamp in Demon Souls is in general but I find that game very charming over all.)

Secondly in most soul's games barring shit like 2's well where you have to throw yourself to your death a few times until you figure out a way forward navigating a level is usually not a memorizational affair but one of caution and common sense. If you have to memorize the level's lay out you're probably playing badly.

Thirdly creating a game where all options are viable is ideal but I feel that rewarding a player for playing the game wrong is one of the things wrong with the industry. If you can't be bothered to learn how to play the game correctly go play one of the mainstream games where they hold your hand through the entire experience.

Could Souls games benefit from being less opaque? Probably. But I never had to look up a build guide, most of its concepts were extremely basic and usually explained in game via the manual. A fighter needs strength, con, and dex or the equivilent stats in system. Magic needs int and priests need faith, both need mem.

Tl;DR
Git Gud.

also most of the levels aren't about trial and error so much as exploring and getting a handle on the local hazards. Admittedly the game punishes experimentation too harshly but whatever I like the whole package.
>>
>>51971991
I'm not against those games, but they tend to be usually quick rogue-likes where you start the game quickly after dying.

In Souls games death isn't final but all your bad decisions regarding stats and upgrades are, and you can really fuck yourself if you don't think about shit. And you can't because nothing tells you what affects what and if you can upgrade that sword to do magical damage later.

I don't remember having to memorize stuff regarding enemies that much. Just basic combat of blocking and rolling. The actual gameplay I found to be pretty sweet and if something gave you trouble, there's always some way to cheat. I made a faith build and ended up killing majority of the bosses and tough enemies with a bow from a safe location.

I see where you're coming from, but in DS at least there's a buildup of lessons learned from each boss in the first half that makes you better at the game. Taratus Demon teaches you not to tank hits if you can avoid it, gargoyles teach you to manage multiple targets, Gaping teaches you the call and response you mentioned, Capra teaches you target priority and how an aneurysm feels, Sif teaches you how to deal with high-mobility enemies, and so on and so forth until you reach Londo and get the lordvessel.

Every boss after Pikachu and Snorelax is pretty much hot garbage, though.

With regards to balance, that's mostly the problem of mediocre localization leading to misleading tooltips and Resistance being garbage.

In every souls game you can waltz through the game without raising a single attribute beyond their starting value. You can beat any fight with virtually any weapon. Build and gear are just a crutch that makes the game more forgiving of your mistakes.

>If you can't be bothered to learn how to play the game correctly

Most people aren't interested in mastering a game by honing their skills at it through several tries. In Demon's in particular, there's no way of reversing mistakes, other than starting again. And if you're several hours into it, the desire to do so is not particularly high.

>most of its concepts were extremely basic

How does the world tendency work? Why isn't it going up even when I killed the dark phantoms? What's the correlation between damage on a bow and damage on an arrow? What's the correlation between scaling and raw damage from a weapon? How do I know which weapon to sink all my upgrade material into, when I have no idea what the end result on each of them is gonna be and there's no way of reversing the upgrades?

"It doesn't hold your hand" is in this case a blatant cover for "It denies critical information" or "It expects you to memorize information on your own with no forward explanation."

For instance, let's take a hypothetical RPG called, just as a hypothetical, The Snitcher. in The Snitcher, you have to fight a series of monsters, will probably be rolling and dodging a lot, and the game on a decent difficulty setting is relatively difficult if fights are not properly prepared for. The game doesn't "hold your hand" in that no UI element will forewarn you if an enemy is too tough for you right now and it won't make it immediately obvious what an enemy is weak to (such as with a UI prompt saying HEY EQUIP THIS OIL NOW). However, you're not really expected to just rush into fights - you're expected to prepare first, by, say, researching a target, figuring out what it's weak to, equipping or buffing appropriate gear, and so on. It doesn't FORCE you to do this, but it does EXPECT you to - all the information is there, you need only seek it.

Contrast that hypothetical game that totally doesn't exist to the Souls series, where your primary means of learning an enemy's triggers and so on is getting killed by them or looking it up online ahead of time. If you prepare badly, you can get fucked over, potentially permanently in the case of skills and upgrades. It also doesn't tell you sufficient information about the skills and how they interact with what another and what is or isn't important - these are very common complaints and the reason why build guides are so popular. This is denying critical information and using "it doesn't hold your hand" as a blatant cover for shitty design.

Also, offering options and then punishing experimentation is fucking retarded. If an option offered is "playing the game wrong" then it needs to be either undoable, fatal, or FUCKING REMOVED.

In Griffith's internal monologue, he goes over that Guts' only real option would be an overhead swing. He was planning on deflecting it off to the side, like he's been able to deflect Guts' sword with one hand in the past. So he'd parry Guts' swing and bring his own sword down on Guts' shoulder, wounding him, but leaving him with a reminder that he belonged to Griffith. He did mull over the possibility that he'd kill Guts, but he accepted that because if HE couldn't have his little boy toy, no one else would.
The one thing he didn't count on was his sword breaking. Webm from old anime linked because it's too big to upload. Uploaded webm slightly related.

>>51972263
Eh, Serpico kept trying to start shit in areas that he thought Guts would be at a severe handicap. It worked for a second before Guts would always just muscle his way through the duel or pull a trick that that smug little Serpico never thought of.
>>
>>51972121
>>51972341

Also, the attitude of "get gud" is a problem. As previously explained, it isn't really about getting good so much as it is about having foreknowledge. "Get gud" means reach the top of the difficulty curve. But Souls has a fucked curve, one that starts high and then plummets once you learn critical information (usually by dying to whatever new enemy does that you had no reasonable way of predicting in advance or knowing how to best counter the first time).

And you "get a handle on the local hazards" by encountering them, which in a game with a narrow margin of error often means dying and losing progress and time. It's not a real mystery why a lot of players find this frustrating.

>>51972138
Roguelikes don't rely on simple memorization due to their randomization. You die a lot, sure, but you die less as you master the game's mechanics and learn what sorts of threats you might randomly encounter. Unlike Souls games, it still has a naturally curving upwards difficulty curve, even if randomizing elements can sometimes make things arbitrarily difficult or easy (such as spawning a high level threat next to you at start or not spawning accessible things needed for progress).
>>
>>51972190
You certainly could not reasonably accomplish that without having previously learned how to defeat every boss and enemy and how to proceed.

Again, foreknowledge and memorization is not the same as mechanical mastery and too many Souls fans confuse the former for the latter.
>>
>>51972341
>The game doesn't "hold your hand" in that no UI element will forewarn you if an enemy is too tough for you right now
So not the witcher 3, which had enemies marked with skulls if they were way over your level.

I do get what you're saying, and I agree. I found Dark Souls fun the second time I played it, and I just marathoned the game.

The first time I tried playing it 3 years ago, I walked into the graveyard 5 times and jumped off the cliff twice before writing the game off as trash because the enemies just out of the starting area took 25 hits to down and killed you in two swipes, and exploring everything except a single path out of firelink that was surprisingly hard to see that there was a different way out. If I hadn't had a friend mention there was a different way out from the graveyard, I would have never bothered picking that game up again.
>>
>>51972341
>your primary means of learning an enemy's triggers and so on is getting killed by them or looking it up online ahead of time

That doesn't bother me. Dying is not failure, dying is part of the game. I have no gripes with the actual gameplay, I think it's quite nice. My problems are to do with everything outside of gameplay with all the systems, upgrades, etc. That's where I need info. Knowing if an enemy is weak to fire is quite easy, hit it with fire vs. hit it with not-fire and compare the damage. Simple. Also, if the area is handing out loads of fire stuff, it could be an indicator of things.
>>
>>51963466
And now they have a Warboss. Terrific.

>Most people aren't interested in mastering a game by honing their skills at it through several tries.
I'm perfectly fine with failing in most games and restarting if it means I'm making mistakes with the mechanics due to still learning or mastering the game. All games must have some fear of failure, it's arguably something necessary in order to be a game.

That isn't nearly the same thing as a game like the Souls series that, let's be honest, no player picked up for the first time and never died a few times or a few dozen times in the process of learning basic things like how to counter specific enemies.

>>51972465
see above

>>51972464
Not TW3, The Snitcher. It's a hypothetical game. :^)

Unfortunately, I expect games to be fun the first time I play it and preferably from the start at that. Lots of RPGs (admittedly not including Souls games) have an early-game skill ghetto where it's actually much harder than the midgame because you don't yet have useful skills and upgrades, and that shit annoys me too.
>>
>>51972424
>Roguelikes don't rely on simple memorization due to their randomization.

The pieces might get shuffles, but you still need to learn the movement and attack patterns of different enemies, the abilities of different weapons, what different spells and items do, etc.

>>51972526
>no player picked up for the first time and never died a few times or a few dozen times in the process of learning basic things like how to counter specific enemies.

Never, ever said anything like that. Just saying that if you don't know what you're doing with your stats, upgrades, world tendency, etc. You can fuck your gameplay or make things very difficult for yourself without knowing it. The fact that you got things you can't find any numerical info on, like scaling, is also frustrating.

no Get Gud isn't a problem. There's any number of ways to succeed in the games though all the entries are a little frustrating in that they change up the paradigm.

Skill is an element of Git Gud but as a whole it means using and abusing the system in place to succeed.

That's simple. They fuck the flower until it blooms again. The real trick is suppressing their instinct to eat the flower head afterward (or during!)

When they mention lifting, they're talking about stealing. They're a "community" of shoplifters and thieves who delude themselves into enforcing the law is persecution.

I love hearing people call out Dark Souls on its shit, I can tell you one of the moments I was most angry at a game was in Bloodborne, I got to the Blood Starved Beast, and I was thinking "wow, this fight's really easy, he's already almost dead"...Then he suddenly gets a poison aura that just flat out kills me, because I didn't have moss(?) bound to a quick select because I'd never needed it before that point and had no way of knowing that boss would have that mechanic. That was literally the most cheesy thing I felt I'd ever encountered in a long time and just made me pad the game's time by having to make the long trek back and fight through the first 50% of the boss's hp again.

There was no way to amend my strategy on the fly, no way to recover, it was pretty much just a loss. I'm normally ok with having to learn attack patterns and get used to dodging them, but that was a super binary "did you read a guide ahead of time, yes or no?" mechanic that is entirely trivialized after the first fuck you and doesn't make me feel like I "improved" at all.

>>51975606

Dude, the whole of Lower Yharnam up until that point has enemies that inflict poison damage. You're told that it was burned down because of infection. There's antidotes spread throughout the level and enemies also drop them. There's even more antidotes behind the altar in the boss arena, you can duck back there to catch a breath if necessary. Also, it doesn't get an "aura" of poison damage until it's down 75% of it's health, prior to that it only inflicts poison build-up when it hits you, and by playing cautiously you can avoid it. Hell, even when it gets the aura effect, it's only when it attacks that it can effect you.
Plus, Blood-Starved Beast is an optional boss.
>>
>>51976301

None of that makes that mechanic alright, Old Yharnam was burned because of the beast plague to my understanding, so unless EVERY bas EVER built up poison, I would not expect old yharnam to be particularly poison filled, and besides that, I don't remember any enemies even that did give poison. What I remember from old yharnam is a really annoying gatling gun with a bunch of crows and a bunch of werewolves in a small town-ish person that jump out of a door, and a couple of hooded mobs on the run up right before the boss. I guess maybe those hooded people gave poison? I don't recall, if they did it was miniscule enough that it never bothered me literally at all. There were also some ghoul-ish dudes I recall that were annoying, but I seem to recall them just being annoying because they jumped back a lot or something, not poison. Literally at no point in the run up to that boss did I feel like I would need a way to cleanse the poison, and it wasn't until he just got a FUN aura that I actually had to because he gave it to you regardless of if he hit you or not with his attack.

So what if it's an optional boss too? A cheap mechanic is a cheap mechanic, saying "you can just not do it" is like saying "you can just not buy a bad game", it doesn't make the game any better.

Sorry for bad english, on phone, rereading it and realize I desperately need to edit my post, but can't.
>>
>>51968501
No really
>>
>>51976956
The cloaked beasts and the werewolves both build up toxin.
>>
>>51976956
Also why were you not opening up the shortcuts in the level? It's maybe 2 minutes from the lamp to BSB if you open the shortcut the werewolf blasts open.
Soulsborne isn't artificial difficulty but it does reward exploration and investigation. Old Yharnam is littered with antidotes which should have given you a clue, along with half the enemies that inflict poison damage. They even look like BSB.

Thanks asshole.
I just nostalgically went through the whole archive and now I want to fuck Aeris AGAIN!
>>
>>51977101

even so, those 2 minutes were bullshit padding for a mechanic that was some pretty cheese. In fact, that's another whole problem I have, the run back is supposed to be some sort of 'challenge', but most of the time its just a time padder/ If there's ever any ACTUAL road block you need to have multiple attempts at, you just spend what is essentially a minute+ respawn timer between every attempt in the form of running through the area back to the difficult part.

and again, I never had to use a single antidote before that fight as far as I recall, since again, it wasn't on my quick select prior to that boss fight. Even assuming that having a handful of mobs that give poison is an indicator, (it's not imo, there is easily an equal number of non poisoning mobs anyhow). Nothing about the area actually hints at the poison as far as I know bar MAYBE stopping in the middle of play to read some item description maybe? All I understood was it was burned because of the generic beast plague, which is, kinda everywhere.

Finally, that's a leap of logic to assume "oh hey, there's a slightly above average rate of appearance. Either I'll have to stop my game in the middle of running to read its description (which after looking at the wiki, appears to be my only hint that this area has something more than regular beast plague) to understand this area, which I might not! The only area I'd been in previously was the 'begnnner' area with gascogne and cleric beast, so who am I to say that the entire city after the starting zone isn't filled with antidote just like Dark Souls is filled with shit I don't use like fire bombs?

I know I can't speak for you all on this thread, but every time I've talked with an IRL friend about this sort of shit, I find out they literally play with a laptop next to them with a wiki open, so I'm sorry, but I often have a great deal of suspicion over anyone arguing me that dark souls doesn't have a hidden information problem.
