Reading through the Talons tactica on 1d4chan, and it's basically one long article about how amazing they are at melee and how invincible every model is. Is this the usual brand of exaggeration? The DG player and WE player at my store are both building Custodes armies, so do I stand a chance with Mechanicum? I suspect I may have to pull out a few war crimes to get rid of those S:D dreads, though.

Anyone played a game with/vs the new Custodes or Titan Guard? How did it go?

I'm a bit bummed they aren't using the round aspires shields (hoplons) the hoplites were famed for.
Reduce them to pure infantry as fast as you can, anon. Their tanks and dreads are too dangerous.

They could have done that, but even if it's not completely accurate I do think the kiteish shields suit them better, especially with the cog emblem on it.
Hopefully they won't have much in the way of armour, those guys are expensive, so my one Hoplite kill team and the Lightning should be able to deal with them, since my big guns will need to be dropping sweet sweet S10 on their infantry.

Do they have the volume of attacks to clear tarpits, or would Adsecs and Cult Hordes do a decent job? With those stats they're not losing units fast enough for me to just hit them as they come.

>>
>>51952082
>Do they have the volume of attacks to clear tarpits
With those melee weapons? Nah, they exist to bodyblock infantry away from Titans and be harder than usual to kill with their invulnerable and defensive on top of the hand-daddy (kyropatris) field.

On the Taghmata's particular case, they also exist to suicide drop in an arvus the way legiones astartes wish their melta tac support squads could.

>>
>>51952182
Even better, because of forgeworld's kerrrr-AZZY rules writing, if you roll a single 6 to hit on the charge, all 7 attacks have the D.

"I didn't read Echoes of Old Nigh", the post.
It's just a "but more destroyers" story, though
>>
>>51952218
Yeah, I was talking about the Custodes, but I didn't make that clear, sorry.

Sadly the Peltasts lack the punch they have in 40k, but large blocks of permanently BS5 Skitarii Vanguard in transports with FnP buffs and very good transports are still pretty damn shiny. I've done the maths, with Axiarch Feel No Pain and a Titan they take 18.5% of small arms fire wounds. That makes them basically Terminators but with more easily negated saves. Certainly tougher than your standard Astartes Tacticals. Hoplites are gloriously insane at their job and nice and sticky deepstriking (without mishap in Ruins) scoring Troops in Arvus.
>>
>>51952591
I love how there's basically no disadvantage to activating the hazard protocols against astartes armies (i.e. most 30k armies). WS2 I2 is exactly the same as WS3 I3 when fighting marines.
>>
>>51952524
What's this?
>>
>>51952694
DG destroyers led by their Chaplain siege a crashed IF ship. It's where the "Locked tighter than Dorn's arsecheeks" quote comes from.
In the Mega
>>
>>51952650
>WS2 I2 is exactly the same as WS3 I3 when fighting marines.

Another reason why the Tau aren't properly stat'd. They should be Str2.
>>
>>51951814
I played a 1500pts game with my Custards (the few models I have for now). The Shield-Captain and Hetaeron are very painful if you don't have nasty things to ID them, Look Out Sir for everybody in the squad makes them way more durable as a squad than what you may expect.

Use tarpits. Custodes are very few in number and the basic guys have only 2 attacks, they can't deal with them (extra attacks on a 6 to hit is not a big thing). Shoot the fucking Dreads, try to scout/deep-strike something in the ass of any Caladius. Bring blobs, play a mission where you need to hold objectives and everything will be fine.
>>
>>51952650
Well, unless you're scrapping with Death Guard or Wolves and for some reason you had enough equipment on your Alpha to stand a chance in a sergeant fight, and even then you certainly get more out of the BS2 overwatch, killing three Marines right there.

Best thing about Hoplites is going to be the staggering amount of retaliation they'll be subject to once the Spartan/Fellblade/Stormlord/Whatever is destroyed or crippled and the opponent realises that they can keep doing that while being Marine-level sticky and scoring in his backfield. I can't see them doing much to anything without an AV, but they'll be perfectly worth the 254 for guaranteed Spartan elimination. I wouldn't be surprised to see 800pt Primarchstars waste a turn on them.
>>
>>51953018
Oh great, 3W 5e style Nob Bikers with better saves. They can suck artillery all game long, I think.

Only two attacks? I suppose I'm used to the 40k Custodes with four or five each.
Tossing down 100 Levies seems like the obvious approach, or possibly 60 Adsecularis in smaller groups.
Treating the skimmers as Wave Serpents with better armour, I have Lightnings and Thallax for that. Re. Dreads, not much in my army that a charge from a regular Legion Dreadnought won't kill but that will save my Archmagos, and he's hiding.

How's their mobility in practice? Been plenty of talk re. Master of Ambush and Deepstrike, did you use those much?
Arae Shrikes do anything much?
>>
>>51953416
If you go the tarpit route, just be careful of their terminators (once models are out for them). They can put an S6 flamer with Torrent on every model, which will make a mess of almost any blob.
>>
>>51953018
How do custodes handle dreads in melee ? Like if you send in a few contemptors, do the custodes not care, woop the dreadnoughts' asses or start crying because of all the Str 10 attacks ?
>>
>>51953570
Some custodes get power fists. Plus s10 hits are s10 hits whether you are T4 or T5
>>
>>51953570
Anyone without a solerite(?) power fist or a warblade thing will probably struggle somewhat, the dread should hopefully remove a few at least, they're about equal points

>>51953518
A Torrent flamer with the exact stats to kill Levies with Cult Horde and Tainted Flesh on 2+ no saves, which was not an accident. One competent bit of rules writing in that book.

Luckily they're not quite as effective against the Adsecularis or the Secutarii especially. Thinking the most effective techique may be to dump 16.33 wounds on them from a Vanguard squad, since they'll tank artillery and AP2 just fine.

Aquilions scare me, true. I'll have to think of a trick there.

>>51953645

Attempted to take three Ordinatus Minoris Ulator-class, Xana's present to the good Warmaster for all his sponsorship. Got two, one was destroyed when the attack force was decimated by Scoria's advancing daemonbots. As far as we know, they were put to use at the Titandeath, whatever that is.

Well, the Xanatite fleet kicked the arse of the Loyalist one then returned to base when the Dangles blew up the orbital platforms. They didn't exactly take it on man-to-man. Also, Xenos ship? I don't remember reading anything about that.

Hoping we get some new fluff for the Mechanicum sometime, since so far there's been quite a lot of marines jerking off in our stories. Can we have an Admech story sometimes where there are no Marines, no Ctan or Emperor bullshit and no random shoehorning of the Admech being incompetent all the time?

Heh, that mini looks like an oil painting. It's not a bad effect, actually. I kinda like it. Moving forward, thin your paints, your washes too, and give edge highlighting a try.

SW might be able to pull off footslogging troops thanks to Gray Slayers' special rules. Just try to give them a few power weapons and power fists. If you can get upgrade kits to convert the Catphractii to Deathsworn, do so. Run the Calth Terminator character with them.

Russ is a little ridiculous (OP) against other characters and primarchs (some can't damage him in later rounds of combat) but he doesn't do much else. He may need a transport.

Right, here's an idea

Priest of Fenris [Oath of the Dead]

3xVeteran Squads [Equipment is whatever, take Marskman for better bolters and outflank or Weapon Masters and some power weapons]

Wolf Guard Terminators [Lighting Claws plus a heavy weapon or something]

Contemptor Dread

Leman Russ

Thats like 1500pts, maybe more not sure. I dont think its good but its what you can make with it, I'd advise taking Orbital Assault and deep striking everything in drop pods/flyers or stock up on flyers and run one of the SW RoW.

We decided to try and be nice(ish) if people weren't actually rude first. It's not universal, some times of day are more cheeki than others. But the thread was too negative for a while.

In that spirit, the Man at Arms Reforged youtube channel put up a norse viking axe build recently that's pretty much what the fluff describes SW axes as. Complete with knotwork and animal engraving and shit. They did it coz of a video game, but it was still mildly interesting.
They're the same people that built that working chainsword.

In other news, studded pauldrons. Any info on how you'd mark them. Legion marks should go on the left one, right, but if it's all studded up, you can put the markings on there.

No, they said they were going to give them a proper novel, presumably about Mortarian giving into Papa Nurgle. That happens on the way to Terra, after all, and he's spent a couple of books (Vengeful Spirit and Path of Heaven) looking for Calas Typhon and trying to use the warp in a restrained way, with everyone telling him that resistance is futile.

The Ruinstorm is a confirmed title and it should result in the BA getting to Terra. Wouldn't be surprised if it also resulted in the Night Lords getting back together again, since they're supposed to be present on Terra.

Then we've got:
The battle that crushes the Space Wolves. The taking of Anvillus, where a lot of Land Raiders are made (I'm guessing it won't get a novel, or will be rolled into Horus's final approach toward the Solar System). The Titandeath. Still dont' know what the Cataclysm of Iron is but it shows up on FW's timeline. Battles in the Solar System.

I assume something happens on Mars after the Siege of Terra.

Forgeworld had a ruling on one of their books (I thinks it's the age of darkness) in that if you don't have any models on the table at any point you lose.

The at the end of your turn thing is a 40k thing, albeit I think it's just a case of forgeworld not double checking rules
>>
>>51959848

But I would have to use Drop Pods for Tac Marines, right?
>>
>>51959963
Technically you could stuff them in a storm eagle if you purchase one as fast attack choice, but yeah, under normal circumstances you will need drop pods
>>
Since we are talking orbital assault. I came across a drop pod by a happy accident. Now I have never considered or even wanted a drop pod army but since I got one, I feel obligated to use it.

How many more drop pods do I need to buy before it turns into a good strategy rather than a novelty model?
>>
>>51960022
A lot of them, and you'll want some varetiy on them depending on what your objectives are. Don't forget about deep striking terminators with OA though
>>
>>51959989

Ok. I was just wondering because someone mentioned some weird "loophole" that sounded stupid. They said that because they can take drop pods RAW they CAN Deepstrike or something, and that was enough to fulfill the restriction.

Also, Dread/Assault claws are acceptable too, right?

I might grab some Ass Marines and pod in some support squads backed up by teleporting termies if I can get a Vox on the table. Seems like that could be fun for Night Lords. The assault vanguard RoW feels a little too constricting, and I'm not 100% sure if a Terror Assault will be able to deal with armor as well as I'd like.

That loophole shouldn't work because they don't have access to the deep strike rule until an appropriate transport is purchased and they must begin in said transport as per the RoW. Other wise, technically speaking, you could take things like rhinos or even land raiders due to the stormbird and thunderhawk transporter existing as lords of war choices that can deep strike....

Dreadnought Drop Pods, Anvilus, and Kharybdis drop pods are fine, just read the rules on dreadnought talons because they function somewhat differently with OA

Depending on who your playing with, talk to them about how the whole, no models on the table thing is gonna work, because that may drastically change the way you build your army.

Just remember, when playing any drop pod list, each unit needs to have a specific role it can preform upon landing and you want to try and maximize your alpha strike.

So Vets and Tactical Support squads are good for Alpha-ing thing while terminators are a good follow up to finish something else off while presenting a fresh threat. If you take regular tacs, save them for objectives

Dreadnought talons can be hilarious and don't be afraid to bring a Leviathan in to fuck something up hard

Picturing Mortarion on the toxic slopes of Barbarus served only to remind him that the poisoned environs of their home world had actually defeated the primarch, and it had been down to the Emperor to save his fallen son.

>There would be no one to save Morgax Murnau. The Chaplain remembered Phorgal’s insistence that there should be no survivors aboard the Xanthus.

>Indeed, there would be none.

So how scary would Amon Outflanking with three Castellax-Achea be?
>>
>>51961460
Depends on your other psyker. Amon himself is telepathy and divination which doesn't make for very scary channeling bot.

>>
>>51961509

People actually care about that?

Castellax are really strong, but also really immobile and Outflanking really helps with that. Meanwhile, Amon could either roll on Telepathy for Shriek and Invisibility/Shrouding to boost their survivability, or get Divination to twinlink them and give them 4++/Ignore Cover.

It seems pretty expensive though.

Castellax seems like a pretty expensive gimmick in general. WS3 BS4 does not a scary robot make. Psychic ping pong is also very gimmicky and situational. And if the enemy just bombs all the psykers around the Castellax, then what else do you got to work with?

The issue is that it does very little in what TS really need. I mean, with Magnus on the field, it all becomes moot point, but TS with psychic powers will need anti tank and anti air. Castellax doesn't really bring anything new in that department.

If it brought a really good gun then I would consider them, but as of now, they are just cute toys

castellan is probably better than most RoW options could ever be without duplicating the extra fortifications effects, since a few of the existing fortifications increase substantially in power when used in conjuction.

I really need to spend some time making a deployment example in photoshop, but there is a list type that after being run only once as a proof of concept got called the "seigfried line" list. Components: 1 Imperial strongpoint [1 bastion, 2 aegis, 6 tank traps, 6 barricades] 1 Void relay network [2 VSG, 1 pipes] and 1 or 2 armored container sets to taste. (up to 6 containers total)

plan: acquire minimum 3 squads with flamer weapons. in 30k these should be marksman vets with combi flamers. deploy the fortifications with the bastion between both sets of VSG, and with VSG overlapping to the point that one is wholly inside the 12" bubble of the other. Deploy barricades and tank traps to form a perimeter around the edge of your bubble zone, and any remainder lining your side board edges and littering your deployment zone to deny non-infantry deepstrike. Place artillery behind the bastion and containers which have formed a LOS-blocking wall covered by void shields. Pray you roll inuln generator on at least 1 container in the stack.

Result: your enemy has to approach your line from outside the void shields, taking artillery and quad mortar fire the whole way. even if they try a close deployment deepstrike they cannot get inside the shield due to the presence of your own units, and will then be hosed down by torrent weaponry. ouflank presents the same problem as only foot infantry vulnerable to return fire and interceptor will be able to arrive within reasonable distance.

I've played it. once. as a test. NEVER AGAIN.
>>
>>51962137
gets short ranged units into the fight, and can be used to get rear armour against vehicles or set up impromptu pincer moves against isolated units
if you opponent overcommits his powerful units to fight your outflankers, then he's wasting them and your main force rolls up the board.
its very versatile and getting a unit of sniper vets into rapid fire range very quickly is nothing but excellent

Did either of you bring an army designed to crack open fortresses?
There's a reason most forces mentioned as being good at sieges specialise in them. And why usually much larger forces are needed to take a fort (though I guess that'd be done by the points cost of the fort)

Does seem like the void shields are doing most of the work though, so I guess you'd need to take them out with long range firepower or airstrikes.

yes, I brought a minmaxed IW force (had to proxy a few things) just to see what I could do even knowing the full weaknessess of the setup. the problem is cracking those shields and then having enough left over to shoot through that much 4+ invuln. the containers are probably the most broken thing in there. the right roll gets you 4+ on everything within 6" of it, and while it can be removed via shooting, it takes away the shooting needed to crack VSGs and void shields.

>>
>>51963109
Ahriman in that book was weird. He spends the first third/half of the book being generally useless, having to be saved by others, and overall Not Getting Shit Done. Then it's like McNeil remembered this character is meant to be kind of a big deal, and upped his power level for the rest of the book.
>>
>>51960411
Well, I can tell you something from it you specifically want to know. Check the archive for greentext of the main sections.
>>
>>51961566
>if the enemy just kills all your guys, what will you do hotshot?
>what will you do?!
>>
>>51963168
I think Mcneil was fixated on making Ahriman come across as a sympathetic character, and also he's basically the most blinded one after Magnus because he's a corvidae and when his powers leave him he's a bit like an addict who refuses to use his instincts and logic and tries harder to predict using the warp. This is obviously the biggest threat to Tzeentchs plan, so tzeentch shuts off his powers. Meanwhile the likes of Phosis and Haathor don't rely on prescience so they get shit done.
>>
>>51963188
Well then you win.
>>
>>51963168
It reads to me like the Aghoru section and the rest of the book were written in separate drafts.
In the first version he probably meant to do a slow develop of Ahriman, then junked that plan but kept his opening section.

Although considering he wrote Ahriman as a total b-b-baka foil to Forrix in that novella, I'm not entirely sure he fully understands how a character like that *would* develop.
>>
>>51963213
I Seriously Hope You Guys Trudeau't Do This.
>>
>>51962199
Imagine that with Solar Auxilia. Infantry squads with 10 Torrent flamers each lining the pipes, plus you can probably make your LoS wall out of 5HP Vindicators instead, or Ordo Reductor where it's all self-repairing thanks to the Enginseer squads with max flamers and everything is lined with Fearless troops, which are all compulsory troops thanks to the Macrotek you took to be able to do that in the usual Force Org, minus the crates.

Could you do that with a Skyshield instead of containers? Turn One while it's still well shielded you could launch a flyer from it too, then raise the barricades when the shields are breached.

Sounds like it would be fun to play with if you balanced out the points, though.

Well that does look beautiful, anon.
See, what about trying to position the Medusae so they have range on the flamer squads but not on the artillery (unless they're Earthshakers), maybe bring a Pavaise Deredeo for a bit of protection.
I presume you have anti-air, right?

Deepstriking Haywire squads in Arvus can't really be dealt with, even with non-skyfire Interceptor (Hoplites are cheap, Secutors are T5 2W, both of them have a 5++) and can bring down anything with an AV.
Because EMPs are deadly to ferrocrete bunkers, apparently.

And then people with Conversion beamers (Techmarines, Reductor Techpriests, Myrmidon Destructors, all Magi), Darkfire cannons (Castellax Troops) and the Thanatar Calix can outrange Thudd guns and Medusae.

So can Macrocarids and even then, Explorator upgrade + Machine Spirit would mean one of them could be placed as forward as you can in your deployment zone (12"), scout 12", cruise another 12" and suddenly it's hull mounted multimelta is in melta-range, rerollable if it has Decima inside of it, unkillable if it has his Techpriest retinue, using no slots if it is his DT.
Realistically you don't need it to move that forward, but it is a thing.
