Dungeon World is a good choice if you're into rules lite. (SUPER LITE)

WotC "D&D" can barely do epic fantasy, and can't do other fantasy.
TSR D&D only tries to be good at doing Swords & Sorcery.

GURPS: Dungeon Fantasy. It goes out of its way to ape standard fantasy RPG tropes and cranks a few up to 11 while also adding some new stuff to the mix; it also avoids the common pitfall of GURPS by doing all the GM's work for him by putting all relevant rules in a single location with some nice streamlining on top of giving players a list of templates to build their character with. However, it's still a classless point-buy system with a level of detail you don't normally see in D&D and its derivatives, so it's definitely a new take on an old genre that might scratch that not-D&D itch.

If you want more than dungeoncrawling, add other parts of GURPS to your game to tailor it as necessary. GURPS is meant to be modular, so exploit that.

Seconding this, Mutants and Masterminds actually has a 2e book called Warriors and Warlocks I think? But even with 3e you have so many customization options that it's easily workable without the book. Power profiles for 3e is a good buy too, has a whole bunch of examples for making different spells. There's also a thread somewhere that has converted from DnD.
