There's no rules here, like "you have a budget of X points to make a trap; size costs this many points, damage this many, these variant damage types this much, and harder-to-foil or detect triggering mechanisms cost more". It's just DO WHATEVER THE FUCK.

Players are the ones who need rules for trap-making and trap-using because there's fuck-all in the books, which leaves it all to DM fiat, which is why he's not going to do it, because fuck coming up with a bunch of rules himself for the one guy in the party who wants to tinker with traps.

Dodge Action + Cunning Action for slipping past unruly circumstances. Also, if you're forced to fight, Dodge + Off-hand attack still deals moderate damage for a rogue if you proc sneak attack off it. I've had mixed experiences with it. For one, I feel like I knew the ins and outs of the AL special rules better than the DMs (probably just because I was very careful to make sure my characters were totally legal), and a few even fudged the 5e rules and terms in general with 3.5 and PF shit. The modules are also of varying quality.

Tough gives the +2 for each level you already have, so you have the same total in the end if you take it at 19 or 4. But it's not great, a simple Con boost instead gives +1 per level and better saves.
But Lucky is strong as hell, depending on how your DM operates. If he rolls in secret, you lose maybe half of its effectiveness.

Thank you! I went with 2d4 because I wanted a bit more consistency with HP than 1d8, but I recognize it's kind of odd. Can you explain what you mean by "uncommon saves" though? None of the classes have the same saves, or even similar ones.

The saves spells usually ask for are Con, Wis and Dex so having these saves high is generally better than Str, Int and Cha. Every class gets one good save and one bad save usually.

There are two types of saving throws: strong and weak. Strong saving throws are dexterity, constitution, and wisdom, while weak saving throws are strength, intelligence, and charisma. Every class has proficiency with one strong save and one weak save.

There's three common save that come up a lot, Dexterity, Wisdom and Constitution. Then there's three that rarely come up, Strength, Intelligence and Charisma. Personally I'd say Constitution and Intelligence would work best.

Your Hit Dice should always be the same as what you get at level 1, so either 1d8 all the way or 1d10 all the way.

Also it might feel bad but making Spellcasting begin at level 2 and follow Ranger and Paladin progression's the best idea.

Ahh, I see what you mean about the saves. Yea, Con/Int seems the best then.

As far as hit dice, I see now that I have both 1d10 and 2d4, and remember that I had originally picked 2d4 and decided it was dumb. I guess I must have changed one but not the other, although now I'm thinking 1d10 might be too tough.

As far as first level spell casting for a "half" caster, I was trying to combine Warlock functionality with spell slots. I didn't even want to really use spell slots, but I wanted a "spellsword" archetype that relied on using it's spell resources to modify its physical abilities like monk, but also had arcane casting. Using a point system just felt too weird. Any suggestions on that?

People think DAMAGE DAMAGE DAMAGE is the meta, but these people also think you can get 20 AC as a level 4 Monk, every game goes to level 20, no one at your table is going to look at you weird for your three class multi character, and other badwrong things that only exist in their theorycrafted universe.

Sword-and-board with Duelist and optionally Shield Master cleans faces and keeps you alive. It's good.

That said, I wish there WERE more polearms in vidya. I'm tired of being swordguy.

The party was able to reach level 4 and held it's own on the healing department with the Paladin and Druid healing capabilities without much problem, thanks to the Barbarian rage soaking most damage and the Paladin being an all around tank.

Thank you, I've never played a Rogue in 5e before.

The race I picked was a Warforged and due to story reasons (A long one at that) he was Fighter 1/Rogue 1.

So more of a frontliner there. I think Swashbuckler can be a good fit, but I hope that doesn't sacrifice the Rogue skill monkey-ry.

What you've posted is NOT the spellcasting feature.
The spellcasting feature works in a specific way. You can never end up with a different number of spell slots to one of the possible combinations a wizard has. It's just a half caster only gets more spell slots almost every other level instead of every level.

Call it 'Astromancy' or whatever the fuck you like, but never call something 'spellcasting' if it isn't the spellcasting feature specifically.

If an archetype gives you better spellcasting, specifically state that once you take that archetype you discard your old spellslot granting feature for this new one.

They all align perfectly. However, the difference is when they progress.

A third caster gains a level of spellcasting at level 3, 4, 7, 11, 14, 17 and 20, unless multiclassed, in which case it's at 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18.
A half caster gains a level of spellcasting at 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, unless multicalssed, in which case it's at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, (20).
A full caster gains a level of spellcasting at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20. Multiclassing does not change this.

You then total up all of your spellcasting levels.
1 level: 2 level 1 slots.
2 levels: 3 level 1 slots.
3 levels: 4 level 1 slots, 2 level 2 slots.
4 levels: 4 level 1 slots, 3 level 2 slots.
5 levels: 4 level 1 slots, 3 level 2 slots, 2 level 3 slots
And so forth.
A third, half or full caster can never have a number of slots that does not pertain to that sequence. You cannot have 1 or 5 level 1 slots without it not being spellcasting.

You see, the difference with what you've got is that there aren't any levels of spellcasting that'd work smoothly for multiclassing.

It's horrendously technical, and honestly the main reason it's like that is A) simplicity and B) for the sake of multiclassing. Having a non-spellcasting feature just says 'Yeah, uhh, you stack non-spellcasting and spellcasting on top of each other instead.'

I was noticing that after I went and rechecked; the spell slots are identical, but cantrips and spells known switch around.

So, to bring it in line, I would put it to half-caster slots then. I think the only difference I have in my table is the 1st level 1st slot and the 20th level additionaly 5th slot.

What do you think about the archetype having the single 6th level slot?

It would be easier to have a seperate feature for those, much like how warlock does it. So just take warlock's level 6+ spell features and make it level 6 only. Can't remember how they word it, but it only allows one spell per slot and no upcasting, so you could add in clauses such as 'you may use this slot to upcast' or 'you may know two different spells for this slot, but only cast one of either every long rest'

An extra level 5 slot could simply be replaced with a feature similar to wizard's arcane recovery.

Having a level 1 spell slot at level 1 is the hardest to account for, would end up being a really weird feature saying 'If you have one and only one level of this class, you gain a single level 1 spell slot'.

I'm not married to any of it, beyond "half-caster that uses spell resources to augment physical abilities" and the idea of getting bonus martial effects while concentrating on spells. I really just want a gish that makes caster and martial interaction more indepth that "I cast a spell this turn, and hit something with a sword next turn".
