ITT: Series that would be perfect for an RPG
>>
Rewatching the last airbender, I was simply stunned how imaginative fights were. In Korra, it was usually limited to FIRE PUNCHES and EARTH kicks.
With notable exceptions, of course, such as Suyin vs Kuvira fight.

Ben 10
Jurrasic park or Prehistoric Park
Spore (the game)
Asterix comics
Teen titans (Original animated one)
>>
Make way for the best series on kid's WB (after Megaman NT Warrior)

Both would be amazing as a setting.

AtLA is a great idea for an rpg, but (at least when I tried) it falls kinda short.

The world is really incredible and the characters are memorable. But when I tried, Every one argued over who would be the Avatar for five hours. Then we agreed to drop the idea and never talk about it again.

>trying to balance a character class that would literally be every other class combined along with a bunch of extra unique shit thrown in

It should be obvious that literally no one will get to be the avatar that isn't a NPC or played by the DM's significant other
>>
>>51920527
>>51920540

I suggested that around hour 2.

>how about no one is the Avatar?
>what, no way!
>yeah, there has to be an avatar
>and it should be me. I mean, if you npc the avatar, it'll just turn into "ESCORT QUEST: THE GAME"
>.... whatever, I'm going out for food.

It was not a proud moment for my group. We just decided to leave it alone. And, actually, I've been toying with creating a NOT!Avatar universe with none of the spirit Jesus stuff. Hopefully, it will have all the charm with none of the problems.
>>
>>51920604
>ESCORT QUEST: THE GAME
Because that's what all non-avatar characters did in the show. Escorted Aang from A to B to C and so on and never had their own development, missions, time in the spotlight, etc.

I shouldn't be upset, but I am and I don't like it.
>>
>>51920672
That's most of what they did even before he became a fully realized avatar. The core premise of the plot is that Aang is the only one who can actually fix shit, everyone else exists to facilitate that fixing.

If he hadn't been an impulsive 12 year old there wouldn't have been a story to begin with.
>>
>>51920672
I don't know if you're trying to be sarcastic.

>>
>>51921176
I was thinking you can balance them out by giving them higher base stats.
>>
>>51921168
I take it you actually haven't seen the show.

Skilled Nonbenders are some of the most dangerous people in Avatar.
>>
>>51921199
Or use the Dresden Files RPG thing of giving them greater flexibility
>>
>>51921201
I just watched the whole series.
>>
>>51920604
I would suggest that the problem is not the setting but your group. It's like if your group had watched the D&D cartoon and argued over who got to be Venger, refusing to play if nobody could.
>>
>>51921168
If you use classless systems like Mutants and Masterminds or BESM (I like to call them Build- a- Bear systems), then probably. Every point not spent on bending powers frees up points for skills, non- magical combat abilities, etc. And if the system is mostly balanced as far as those options are concerned, then you should be able to make someone like Sokka or Asami just as good as Katara or Bolin.
>>
>>51921219
Then you should know better.
>>
>>51920672

There's so much room for weapon masters, ki blockers, and other martials in the Avatar universe.

Well, duh, but that's like saying Star Wars episode IV is better than Pirates of the Caribbean. You're technically right, but only because one is a time-tested classic of the ages. The other is a fun, interesting series that is good in its own right.

Nah, two sets of stats. One for your NetOP, which is within Human standards, and one for your Navi. The GM RP's as whichever character you aren't at the moment, following some character guidelines you set out before hand, but mostly stays out of it, and the game usually focuses on one character at a time. The GM would probably handle it the same way a Ranger's Companion Beast is handled.

>There are a fuckton of fights in ATLA that are just slowly lobbing elements at each other,
Now, this is a personal thing, but I can remember a unique use of bending in nearly every single episode of AtLA. I think the absolute best fight actually comes from Korra, but only by a hair because I can't think of one that blew my mind as much as the one from Korra (Bolin vs the kidnappers in S2). Which, appropriately, has a unique use of bending in that too.

The story of Korra's airing schedule is a more moving story than Korra's own, sadly. Imagine going back in time before the series debuted and explaining only that.
>So you guys get four seasons, about 52 episodes total
>the second season drops a year after the first season ends, but switches from Saturday mornings to Friday nights
>and the big mid-season special is leaked beforehand
>also after that they drop two episodes a week
>including the last four episodes of the season in one night
>and then the next season starts around a year after that, with 3 episodes
>then two episodes a week for two weeks, followed by one episode, and then a brief hiatus
>the show returns but is digital only now. The last five episodes of season 3 go online across one week
>season 4 starts a month later. initially all digitally, but the tail end of your show gets back on the air. it officially ruins christmas

What would be the best way to handle the monster of the day without it getting stale?
>>
>>51925276
I wouldn't necessarily say I want that, but I will say that if you created a perfect digital model of me running a game and ran it for a simulated decade that the stuff going on at the other end would look a hell of a lot like that.
>>
>>51925192
I played a game where we were Sentai. It was fucking epic and dumb and i miss it.
>>51925442
By not making it the focus of the game. Our game was a lot more interpersonal stuff (like the american PR) and dealing with small things. 'weeks' usually lasted a couple of sessions and it was usually late in the week when it was time to mash some monsters.
>>
>>51925442
Monsters of the day are just what comes in between the plot-relevant stuff.

>MotD
>Quest for Macguffin
>Really powerful MotD that requires an upgrade to defeat
>Rematch with lieutenant
>etc
>>
>>51925499
Did you do mech fights? How did you handle multiple players controlling a single mech?
>>
>>51925531
Not him, but I always let the players control individual systems. Usually a helmsman, one or two on weapons, and someone on defensive systems.

>Dammit Jim! I can't shoot him from here!
>Shut up, Tom! His tentacles will rape us!
>Quiet down, you two. I am trying to recalibrate the polarized hull plating to deflect the radiation from its breath attack.
>Pew pew, lasers!
>>
>>51925531
We did. Any monster we fought as squishies or transformed came back later as a mech fight.

Since we were playing in BESM it was pretty easy to stat the individual mechs, and we literally just added everyone's stats together to make the full one. Then our red ranger would pilot (read rolled the dice) with the others offering support (bonuses) and tactics (meta gaming). We are a pretty co-operative group (we'd probably handle the avatar thing with 'make them a GM PC?' 'make them a GMPC' 'CONSENSUS') so there was never much fighting between us (out of character). The giant fights were much more narrative driven though, and we often used the rule of cool, but it was hella fun.

BEEG at the end was Zordon's evil side that got separated when he died and got resurrected. That was probably the most anti climatic fight i've ever seen.

my idea for A:LOK rpg was moving into th 1950s+, Korra being old & running "Project Yue" NASA and training th players as the first generation of Astronauts.
all the players would be bound to Spirits and become Avatars based on different paths in Buddhism, Hindu, Dao & Jainism.
>>
>>51919949
Didn't read thread so RIP if it's been said, but having run such a game, with some home-brewed fairly light rules, it doesn't work too well. The avatar is ludicrously overpowered, and trivializes any combat situation. Furthermore, even if none of the PCs are the avatar, it's hard to justify them doing anything good, or evil, without the avatar intervening. Since it's the avatar's sole job to keep the world in balance, any major evil would be dealt with already by the avatar, and the PCs don't need to. Similarly, if they try to carve out their own kingdom or something, the avatar just shuts them the fuck down. The only way I managed to run it was to have them search for a missing avatar, but the motivation seemed weak.
>>
>>51926252
>Since it's the avatar's sole job to keep the world in balance, any major evil would be dealt with already by the avatar, and the PCs don't need to.
The avatar is off in the spirit world battling weird spirit shit that threatens existence. Or he's stuck in a block of ice. Or she's lost her powers again for some reason (we've seen it happen to both Aang and Korra). Or he's still young and hasn't mastered his powers yet. Or she's imprisoned somehow or maybe comatose but not dead.

Or maybe he's out there dealing with other shit. The world's a very big place. It's not like you can't have a modern campaign because why wouldn't the president of the United States (or at least Seal Team 6) show up and save the day? Hell, maybe the PCs actually kind of sort of work with the avatar, at least in a distant sort of way. Like, they don't cross paths often, but they're working to help her in her mission to do good and maintain the balance of the force, or whatever.

This really doesn't seem tricky to me at all.

There were two.

The first you played first-person as Takua shortly after the Toa arrive. You travel the island and occasionally run into them, then follow them into Makuta's lair at the end.

In the second you play third person as Hahli during the Kahl crisis I think. This one focuses a bit more on the Matoran as characters. It had some good parts but it was bogged down with this immensely frustrating Kohli minigame.

Darker than black, definitely.

Durarara!! would be awesome too, but if you were to stay true to the series the party would be splitting up a lot doing their own things before converging again which might be tough to run

DtB: Double Cross is very fitting if you just want to capture the spirit. Wild Talents is better if you want to play in the original setting.

Avatar tla was fun, korra had potential but the studio got jerked around so much with will it won't it get a next season bs and that did prevent them creating something that flows properly.

I want an avatar show about the water avatar we see in a flashback that loves surfing.

>It's not like you can't have a modern campaign because why wouldn't the president of the United States (or at least Seal Team 6) show up and save the day?
That is entirely a problem in basically every modern day campaign, though usually it's the cops instead of the army. In either case it's usually only solvable through increasingly shitty reasons the important people who should care about the situation continue to be uninvolved.

Kuruk? He came after Yangchen who was so goddamn scary that no one started shit for his entire term as avatar for fear he'd be just like her.

They needn't have bothered, he lost his face to Koh like a bitch.

Are you that much of an autist?
The author/DM control how the world works, not the reader or the player.
If he decide the president and entire military rather smoke joints rather that pointlessly risk their lives for ungrateful annoying assholes, that exactly what they will do.
>>

I always thought that, with the amount of emphasis that show put on the balance of things being important, a good premise for a game based in that universe would be that a string of avatars were so successful that the world actually became TOO GOOD; things were stagnating and people were getting complacent and whatnot because everything was basically great all the time. This would lead to the awakening of a kind of anti-avatar; a powerful individual whose goal was to restore the world to its proper state by just causing mayhem and chaos until he was stopped. The world needs some of that in it or people don't have things to strive for, I think. An important moment to the plot could be the fact that, as horrible as the guy is, it's vital that he be kept alive, because his function is as important as the Avatar's.

Plus avatar vs avatar combat would be pretty damn cool to see.

This right here is why I'm writing my FFG Edge of the Empire conversion in the time of Korra. The rules are flexible enough that all you need to do is cut out the Korra content (like tech and certain bending abilities) and then say the game is set before the HYW and viola! rustic Avatar complete with Air Nomads.
>>
>>51926395

Kuvira was able to spend 3 years unimpeded by Korra being the "Great Uniter" of petty Earth kingdoms.

It's got everything you need, whether you're playing pre or post Tavi.
City state nationalities, elemental craft and pokemon control, wolf-men and tribal cannibal elves, yeti people, zerg/nid bugs, whatever the fuck is in the feverthorn jungle that just noped the Vord.

Plus that the world itself seems to be one of those multiverse dumping ground type places, so new stuff can drop in.

im working a demon-contract system into my homebrew fromscratch system where you get a free spell per turn, possibly with game-breaking results, in exchange for not being able to pass your stats onto a new character [theres a unique system where you gain one point and spend ammounts of it on the other 6 points from 2-7 earned points per point]

the basic assumption being that in exchange for letting you cast a certain spell forever you gave up any other possible afterlives for an eternity of baby making sex and the "demon" is actually just an elf/fairy/human/dwarf that happened to trap your reality in a magic computer.

but instead of songs, the abilities/program forms are named after SOCIO-POLITICAL TERMS.

[dirty deeds done dirt cheap: planeshifting] is now
>THE FREE MARKET
harvest is now
>COLLEKTIVISM
SOFT AND WET is now
>bubble
KILLER QUEEN'S BITSO ZA DUSTO is now
>insider trading

oh, also star vs the forces of evil, would be good.
>cardcaptor sakura

TLDR: Play this, but be prepared to add to it
