Centaur with a lance. Does it work?

Horses are shit at pivoting so lances only good for jousting and maybe fighting giant monsters.

Cavalry sabre then.

>>51904725
Lances work damn well on a horse, no matter what you're trying to kill. Almost got killed by a lance myself once.
>>
>>51904740
>horses are shit at pivoting
But its not a horse anon
a centaur can stand on their hands.
>>
>>51904763
Well... okay. That's the problem with melee in general as far as centaurs go, in that the "human body" has a shit positioning for melee combat unless it's, say, a duel. Due to the horse's mass, it's hard for the human to acquire good positioning, which is important in combat. I'd say a tribe of centaurs' warriors would consist of archers (or modern equivalent) and beefed-up enraged berserkers who just charge and overwhelm the enemy in a suicidal stampede.

>>51904781
>>51904775
Horses are stupid. They look dumb and really just suck at anything but moving in a straight line, and they have creepy eyes. If you replace a horse's head with a human half from the waist up, it won't have the same ability as... you know, a jockey, or horse rider.
>>
>>51904725

Apart from what the other guy said, the shock of impact is a big deal. It took centuries to develop both horses strong enough and the necessary supporting tech to allow lances to be used without knocking the knight clear off the horse's back from the massive shock, tech that allowed the force to be transmitted through a specially designed saddle and transferred safely to the horse's body.
Applying all that force right through the connection between the horse spine and the human spine in a centaur is going to lead to serious back pain, if not crippling injury, on the first go.

Related storytime I did over on /co/: >>>/co/90025609 contains a centaur going through basic training in a not-quite WWI time period

Speaking of cavalry weapons, can somebody tell me why the lance all but disappeared from the standard cavalry weapon of choice in favor of the sabre as time went on? I can get the sabre as a side weapon, but when your on a mount, aka a huge target, wouldn't you much rather hit first with a lance?
>>
>>51904869

Too specialised, you need a really big horse, and special saddle and stirrups and lance and other gear. It was handy when knights were a big thing, and it was the best way to kill an enemy knight, but you don't need that to kill some unarmored dude in passing, a sabre will do the trick.

>can somebody tell me why the lance all but disappeared from the standard cavalry weapon of choice in favor of the sabre as time went on?

I'm not 100% sure about this, but the only reason lances were popular in this first place is because the crusaders were using them to great affect(effect?) against Turkish Troops.

They'd pin them against rocks and walls and joust the absolute shit out of them in big formations.

This kind of thing though fell out of practice because it largely didn't work anywhere else due to other europeans (I think the scottish or the irish? again, I'm not an 100% historian) would dig into the ground and create big spiky trenches and spear walls that would skewer charging cavalry.

Lances are great because they focus the force of a charging horse and a man in full armor into one small point, somewhat like a bullet. The forces involved are like getting hit by a car going 30+ km/h, and tend to result in the person who has been speared dying. Painfully.

Lances are used as a weapon of initial impact, where a wave of charging horseflesh and steel crashes into your poor, poor, infantry line. They almost guarantee that the men at the point of impact WILL die, which is important for destroying the cohesion of a formation on the battlefield

lances were used by cavalry until cavalry stopped being used.

in ww1 the lance was part of standard cavalry kit.

anons asking about lances - they disappeared in the west because of several factors causing shifts in warfare; the rise and further rise of polearmed foot capable of standing off cavalry meaning a weapon most optimised for use from a horse against footmen was less appealing, this combined with the increasing effectiveness of guns meant that it was too easy to stand off a cavalry charge. melee cavalry essentially became an optional extra for about a hundred years, ineffective pistoleering aside. this era also crosses over with the era of nigh unbreachable forts, they're not exactly contemporary but there's definitely crossover.
By the time artillery is developed enough to break tercios and walls the lance hasn't been used in the wset for the best part of 200 years and doesn't reappear for about an other 100 after napoleon's polish lancers make a big impression on people during his eponymous wars. they stick around until the demise of horse cavalry because no one is silly enough to use them against unbroken foot for the century or so that they're back for.

A spear designed to be used on horseback is usually called a lance.
