One wonders. In a world like this where things are grown or spawned from vats or otherwise artificially created, the differences between genders (if indeed there ARE even genders) would vanish, wouldn't they? There would be no need for a "feminine" body type and mentality among a race that no longer needed to carry or raise their young, and they could focus totally on becoming more aggressive and expansionist, no?
>>
>>51895824
Eclipse Phase and other transhumanist settings often emphasise that gender is little more than a cosmetic choice... for those with access to Fleshcrafting, But With Science.

If you're somewhere where things are more realistic, and most serious bioengineering has to be done in the embyronic stages, gender, health, race, and other 'fossils' might be just as important as they are today.

...depending on what exactly you're doing to everybody's genes at conception.
>>
>>51895824
>and they could focus totally on becoming more aggressive and expansionis

Given how slow and troubled humanity's development towards stable societies is, you may not want to dial this up to any greater degree if people are to be able to get along at all. And not getting along means you miss out on things like accumulated knowledge, scientific progress, and industrial manufacturing, leaving your vat people to try and expand with an assortment of early stone age weapons in a world where technology is advanced enough for vat grown and heavily engineered people to exist.

Give a woman the skeleton and lungs of an upscaled bird and implant her with gorilla muscles and she will literally break the spine of any strongman Bane style. When you start engineering human bodies at such a deep level, the build of the body is irrelevant. All that matters is the biological processes deep inside the body powering the body.
>>
>>51895824
one reason, vanity

sure some people will be sexually attracted to bio-weapon gorillas, but most will be more towards the classic human shape.

They're still limited by fundamental mechanical constraints. A bigger muscular cross section applied over a bulkier skeleton will have more strength and leverage than a smaller frame. Yes the smaller frame could have disproportionate strength thanks to metabolic changes, but the big body could have that, too.

Also remember that biotech usually coexists with computers and machinery. So a body optimized as a thug would be a nice enforcer, but contrast someone with higher intelligence, reflexes, and a compact body that fits more easily into a combat vehicle.

You'd have to decide what we still need to do with our own muscle power in that setting. In GURPS Transhuman Space (by far the best hard sci fi transhumanist setting), it boils down to social and intellectual/creative pursuits. The classic human body, idealized, is a very good fit. And yes they have non-human looking bodies, they just haven't taken over.
>>
>>51898945
When you want to get into that kind of shit, you might as well just completely trash the human form and just create gorilla or tyrannosaur morphs.
>>
What gets me about a lot of these is that for designed creatures they look aesthetic but not practical.

Where's the job requirements that require such a form? Everything I can think of is better suited to a robot or bioconstruct servant.

Humans might look weird if you're trying to stretch pantropic adaptations to suit a very marginal environment. But outright ugly?

The human form is pretty damn good for a lot of things. It can run, climb, and swim. All with decent efficiency and not a lot of room to improve one without crippling another. We're very efficient tool-users. No fur means very well designed for clothing and environment suits.

Size is just right. You could probably cut size in half and keep IQ constant. Then you'd require less life support and have a higher proportional strength. But a lower absolute strength and you'd be more dependent on machines. If you go bigger, then IQ and strength will go up as roughly x^2... but proportional strength goes down and caloric requirements go up as x^3. Either or neither might make sense. Personally, I'd take a slight size decrease species-wide, but if it's just me then it's not worth the social penalties.

Most of the changes I can think of are either cosmetic, metabolic, or tinkering around the edges. The only two gross anatomical problems our species has that I can think of are our feet and our pelvis. Both are serviceable as is.

> When you start engineering human bodies at such a deep level, the build of the body is irrelevant.

That's absolutely not true in any way.

Hell, take modern apes. An orangutan is strong enough to rip your arms off. Cool. But they cannot throw a punch for shit, and even a human child can throw a stone harder than they can.

The human muscles are weaker, yet the purely mechanical characteristics of the body still matters and overcomes the rest.

The orangutan can grab and pull, and do it well. But that is the only string to its bow.

I've been considering it, but right now, my life is on sort of shaky ground so I dunno if I would have the time to do the quest in such a way that I'd do the setting justice.

If I were to do it, it would be a reboot because many factors of the setting have changed (mostly become more refined) and I now actually have an idea for a story I want to run with the characters of the original quest.
The premise would be largely the same though, just with some added touches and more thought put into it, as FQ basically had no real thought put into it's story which is why I ended up running it to a point where I didn't know where to go.

I haven't ran any quests since FQ, and I am unfamiliar of the quest board, so I'd need to look into that too.

In any case, I gotta run. I'll be back in a few hours so if you, or anyone else is interested, I can talk about the setting some more when I come back.

Here is a doc I worked on some time ago, but unfortunately it is very sloppily done and incomplete, not to mention out of date, because of my laziness.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1OjqypVGSiVQu4sXMcm4pXBwI6PTX1bBNL1NB_7NwewQ/edit?usp=sharing

Some history in terms of the overall development of the Gigerverse or Mundus Carnis, as I like to call it.
This doc>>51912962 was made during/straight after the first gigerverse thread, where the idea was initially sprung up. I took some part in those initial few threads and worked on that doc, but as /tg/'s interest waned the doc was sort of abandoned. I kept working on the idea on my own because it intrigued me, and kept developing the various concepts that were born in those first few threads. Eventually, I ran the Freak Quest in which I tried to portray my vision of that world, though that vision has still kept developing after I stopped running that quest.
You can see some of that vision in the doc linked in this post, but again, even that doc is very outdated.

Picture related is some of the first art I made for this setting, in the original gigerverse threads.

So, the basic premise of the setting is the following:

Giant, dystopian, slowly decaying organic city, whose denizens are mutated descendants of humanity, and a wide assortment of strange and monstrous beings. A city where most technology is wetware and biological in nature, where genetic engineering and augmentation is rampant. Ruled by powerful noble families who still hold great understanding of the technology and secrets that keep this world running, and inhabited by wast masses of freaks, sickly and malformed beings who are just trying to eke out a living.
Bordered on the other side, by a wast, endless red ocean, and on the other side, equally endless lifeless wastelands where few dare to wander.

>>51914796
I can explain why, if you'd like.

>>51915182
Yes, they do.

The freaks reproduce sexually, though their rampant mutation and other sickliness makes conceiving let alone carrying a healthy baby to term, an harsh and harrowing experience that rarely ends well (though exceptions happen).

This is where the Vatmother cult enters the picture. The cult basically offers the service of taking the embryo from the pregnant freak, and raising it in one of their vats to the point where it can survive outside of a womb/vat, while also weeding out the ones with catastrophic physical or genetic defects.

This service is the source of the power of the Vatmother cult, and has made the cult one of the core parts of the Freak society. They both secure the birth of the new generations of freaks, as well as hold back the rampant mutation that has been tainting the denizens of the city for countless millennia. Without them, the Freak population would have collapsed long ago, as the eons long genetic decay that they have undergone would have rendered them completely unable to breed.
The Vatmothers proclaim themselves to be the servants of the Great Mother, a deity like figure that is seen as the source of all life in the city by the cult and it's believers.

The Vatmother cult is thus, the biggest religion within the city, and many Freaks see freaks born outside of the vats of the cult, as dangerous and "tainted" often labeling them "gutterspawn".

Picture related, old as fuck sketch of the vatmothers.

So if this is in the far future does this also take place on earth?
>>
>>51915356
Yes.

In the social and political hierarchy of the city, at the top, sit the Noble Houses, of which there are 7.
Each house is themed after one of the seven deadly sins, because I'm an unoriginal hack.

The houses are the following:

>Baryx
Pride.
A noble house that maintains the purity and perfection of their blood with extreme zeal. They consider themselves to be the descendants of the gods, and rightful rulers of the city.
The regions they rule work under a very feudal system, where individual noble Lords rule over a section of the city, and the freak denizens living there live in servitude to the Noble. Most of them are labourers and servants, though the fittest of them are permitted to serve in the personal militia of the Noble Lord.
Unlike most other Noble houses, House Baryx nobles partake in fighting as well, for they revel in chances of showcasing the superiority of their Noble physiology (picture related, it's a sketch of a Baryx Noble) Lesser Nobles, that have not yet earned the tittle of a Lord, fight as "Knights" on their own accord, and often join the armies of Noble Lords to earn glory for themselves. In addition, House Baryx is known of possessing the greatest understanding of genetic engineering in the whole city. Their engineered beasts of war are rightly feared by their enemies.
>>
>>51915527

>Chot
Gluttony.
Chot is a house divided, as it is ruled by 3 kings, whose civil war against each other has been stuck on a stalemate for countless generations. Their only unity is found in their shared hate of the other noble families and endless search to stuff their own maws and mansions with delicacies beyond count. Because of this, the true nobles of the house are few. Each King is afraid of creating potential new competitors, and thus the "nobles" of chot, are in truth, clones of their progenitor king, and created with mental conditioning that prevents them from ever acting against their "father" knowingly.
These mindbound nobles in turn, have countless legions of Butchers, brutish and crude beings that are crafted from the flesh of these servile nobles, and who enforce the will of their makers with brutal efficiency.

Chot rules a region rich in biomass, and they are known of their wast flesh farms in which raw flesh and fat is grown in constantly to feed both the endless hunger of the house itself, but also the rest of the city.
Freaks having the misfortune living under the rule of Chot, face a life of servitude either in the flesh farms, or in the workshops, where they must toil until their body gives in, upon which they are turned into chow for the rest of their unfortunate brethren. Those who disobey, or otherwise displease their Noble masters in turn, face life of slave infantry in the Chot armies where their role is little more than to be food for the rest of the armies, which are composed of Butchers and crude beasts.
>>
>>51895824
Sorry to chime in so late to this, but I dont think you've considered the communicative aspects of gender expression. Gender is a mental and emotional aspect, and is then expressed. I doubt people would give up the ability to communicate such integral parts of themselves for more muscles.
>>
>>51915559
>Lienis
Greed.
House Lienis has a wast empire of trade and industry spread across the city. Out of all the noble houses, Lienis has the largest amount of guilds under it's vassalage, and they zealously protect both their, as well as their guild allies economic interests. The house is ruled by a council of directors, each responsible for a certain aspect of the house, with the exception of the military forces, which operate as semi independent cadres of few hundred warriors each, that all answer to the council. This is to prevent any single faction within the house from having total control over the military forces.
The common freak population, is of rather little interest to House Lienis, and thus, in the regions controlled by the House, freaks may live their lives quite freely, but in turn, cannot rely on the Enforcers of the House for any real degree of protection from gang violence, slavers and any other threats, for House Lienis only acts, if their profits are threatened.
The industrial might of House Lienis allows them to arm their Enforcers with readily available and quite advanced gear, that allows these forces to stand up to foes that outnumber them many times over.

>Viam
Lust
House Viam's territory is spread across the city, and within the domains of the other houses, for they do not rule an empire of land, but an empire of drugs, hedonism and other indulgences. Their domains are shady bars, clubs, drug dens, brothels and so on, found in the dark alleyways and shadowy cellars of more respectable establishments.
House Viam, perhaps out of all the houses, preys most on the common freaks. Their den's of debauchery lure in the freaks who seek a way of escaping their grueling and harsh life into few moments of bliss and ecstasy so that they can forget their troubles and torments. Countless freaks fall into this honey trap, filling the coffers of Viam with endless amount of wealth, as the desperate freaks are willing to pay anything for their next fix. And those who cannot pay their debts, are converted into the ranks of Viam's "servants", crudely augmented servants, who follow every word of their new masters, lest what remains of their miserable existence is taken away from the drug induced trance they live in.

Each of Viam dens is ruled by a singular Lord or Lady, that then answers to the Matriarch of Viam, who resides in her great Mansion, like a big fat spider sitting at the center of a spiderweb.

>Rai-Khil
Wrath
An extremely aggressive and warlike Noble Family, that rules no territory, and instead roams both the uninhabited regions of the city; the warrens, the wast catacombs that run underneath the city, as well as even the wastes that surround the city.
Rai-Khil warriors move in nomadic groups, opportunistically raiding the territories of other noble houses for resources and freaks which to enslave. The freaks captured by Rai-Khil are forced into a harsh, and extremely violent existence, where they are either indoctrinated into the warlike culture of their new masters, that glorifies combat, death and killing, turning into half mad zealots in the process, or be broken in body and spirit, and join the ranks of servile slaves who face an existence of hard labor for the rest of their lives.

The Nobles of Rai-Khil themselves, are fueled by a culture of violence and vendettas, both against each other, as well as against the other houses. This culture has thinned their ranks considerably, despite of certain rites being place, that would prevent wanton kinslaying. A noble of Rai-Khil, may only slay another noble of his own house, in a ritual combat, to do otherwise, will see the transgressor nailed to a bone pole, and set to stand in the harsh dry winds of the wastes, where they will die a slow and painful death.

Though the house is splintered into countless warbands each wandering in a different region of the city, there is a singular ruler of the house as a whole. A single Highlord, residing somewhere in the dark shadows of the city, to whom all the lesser Warlords answer. This tittle is earned trough violence and blood, as to ascend to the status, one must slay the current Lord holding the tittle.
(again, art done by my former roomate.)

>>51915868
"Just fuckin" would be pretty boring, wouldn't it? You can hardly base an entire faction around it.
>>
>>51915527
Sounds like this faction is ripe for a don quixote rip-off.
>>
>>51916033
Finally, there are the two remaining sins, Sloth and Envy.

Unfortunately, I haven't yet come up with good names for either, though I do have some ideas for what each are.

House Sloth's nobles rule little territory. Their holds are great vaults across the city, into which they have sealed themselves. They rule trough their servants, both willing and unwilling who provide their unseen masters the eyes and ears into the realm outside of their barred chambers. For it is information, both from the present and the past, that this house most desires. Their vaults hide wast libraries and museums filled with artifacts and knowledge of the past. They hoard this knowledge, for they know, the power it holds in this age of ignorance.
Their armies are made almost completely out of "bio constructs" golem like biological automata constructed from organic components. These organic "robots" are guided by lesser nobles who direct these slow and cumbersome, but extremely resilient and powerful beings in their endless quest for more knowledge and secrets. Joining the ranks of these golem, are the mindbound servants of the house. Unfortunate freaks, whose free will has been stripped by the House, and replaced with unthinking zeal to do the bidding of their masters.
>>
>>51916309
House Envy is a house draped in shadow and mysteries. They operate and rule trough proxies, pawns that don't even know the game they are part of, and fools who think they are serving themselves, while serving the House of Envy. Their agents are many, and spread all across the city. They range from mercenaries who only fight for pay, to highly trained and well equipped elite soldiers, whose loyalty to their masters is unquestioned.
They strike from the shadows, and disappear again, like a morning mist at sunrise, leaving few, if any survivors. They often use the equipment of the warriors of other houses, in order to further obfuscate the real culprit behind their attacks. They possess among the most advanced technology in the city, much of it stolen from other houses, and combined in new and novel ways, that the original inventors could not have conceived.

The hierarchy of this house, is clandestine and poorly understood by even it's own members. It largely operates in independent cells, that rarely are even in contact with one another. These cells are commanded by higher ranking members of the house, who rarely if ever, know the identities of each other. It is whispered that somewhere within the city, is a room whose walls are filled with blank faces, trough which this house communicates with one another, each member speaking trough these blank faces, never knowing the identity of their peers.

It is not known how wide the spread of this House is, and how many members of other noble houses, have their true allegiances with the House of Envy instead.

What about Bipunk fiction? I've been reading up on pic related. Fantastic stuff, but is there more biopunk stuff out there?
>>
>>51916253
Yeah.
Out of all the noble houses, they are the most obsessed with pride, glory and chivalry.

Anyways, that's the noble houses.
In addition to them, there are numerous guilds in the city, which form the economic heart of the freak society.
The guilds trade, manufacture, harvest, produce and provide wast majority of the services and goods found within the city, and most of the Noble houses maintain strong alliances with at least some of the more major guilds. House Lienis is the most eager of all the houses, to foster such alliances, for their prime focus is the accumulation of wealth.

The already mentioned Vatmother Cult, forms the third major pillar of the freak society. The cult is spread far and wide, and it's role is fundamental to the continuation of the civilization within the slowly decaying city.
In addition to the Vatmother cult, there are countless lesser cults, and faiths spread across the city, and many freaks pray to the deities of multiple faiths, just to be on the safe side.

Finally, there are the gangs. Loosely organized groups of freaks, that often only serve themselves at the expense of others. Violence between gangs is common, and unaffiliated freaks, and even smaller guilds often face intimidation and thuggery from these gangs.

Outside of the "civilized" society of the freaks, exist mutants too deformed/mad/dangerous to be tolerated by the Freak society, monstrous beasts, and aughounds; freaks who have been driven insane by wanton augmentation and body modification. Though the difference between a mutant and an aughound may seem trivial, and often the terms are used interchangeably, there is a distinct difference. A mutant is born that way, and shunned away by the society, whereas any freak, has the potential to become a deranged aughound.

Some more on the denizens of the city.

There are 3 big categories.
The "People" (Freaks and Nobles), the Beasts (non sapient creatures/fauna of the city) and the Drones (the city's own "white blood vessels", hive minded organic automatons).

The People, formed by the Freak masses, and their Noble rulers, form the civilized society of the city.

The Beasts exist both within, and outside of the freak society, as a food source, beasts of burden and war, and even pets, as well as dangerous monsters and predators lurking in uninhabited regions of the city. Some are created via genetic engineering, others have stable populations of their own across the city, and some, it is rumored, are descend from deranged and mutated freaks.

The Drones, are enigmatic beings, that defy one's understanding of living beings. They are unmistakably organic, though their bodies often take forms one would not expect of a living being and their behavior is closer to that of automated machines, than that of any beast or freak.
The Drones are classified into two main groups; the Service drones and the Defender drones.

The Service drones are countless in numbers and types, and range from large, amoeba like Cleaner slime blobs, that gently flow across the city's streets and corridors, gathering whatever dead (or too slow to run away) stuff and digesting them within themselves for recycling, to thin, post stamp sized flakes of skin, that fly in the air currents of the city, and latch on any damaged surfaces in order to heal them.
>>

The Defender drones, in are nothing like their passive servile brethren. Most of their numerous forms posses hard, smooth and shiny chitinous armor, many jointed limbs tipped with diamond sharp blades, internalized bioweapons, and dangerously cunning minds. (I imagine them sorta like these)

The defender drones are for the most part hostile to Freaks, and have been so since times immemorial. They react aggressively to any Freak activity they perceive to be damaging to the city, or whatever the Defenders are guarding. Thankfully for the sake of the freaks, their most common form, is also the most passive one, which only reacts to active freak aggression towards their quarry. But there are other, more dangerous forms, that actively seek and destroy freaks with cold efficiency.
The Defender drones hibernate deep within the city, in wast Barracks, that lie within the catacombs that run trough the foundations of the city. The history of the city, knows of many instances, of hordes of these drones raising up to the surface, in "Drone Surges" that spread chaos and violence everywhere, and often have shaken the very foundations of civilization within the city. The Noble houses have sought out many of the Drone Barracks in hopes of quelling these Surges, and though the rate of them has slowed down over the eons, they are still known to happen.

Without a doubt, both types of Drones were created by the ancient beings who built the city, but the reasons behind their creation, have been lost to time. The mystery of why the Defender drones are so hostile to Freaks, is one to which no one knows a solid answer. Many Freak faiths and myths claim that the Defender drones were the creations of a malicious god, set to torment the freaks, while others claim that they are a punishment for the sinful ways of the Freak society. No one knows for sure, but the long dead creators of the city.

>Whats the domestic life of the freaks like?
>Do they have marriage?
>Are family bonds something that they care about?
Largely depends on one's lot in life. The freaks that live at the bottom of the society, face a life of day to day struggle for survival, whereas their wealthier, and better established brethren, can have lives of relative comfort. Freaks do form pairs and families, and The Vat Mother cult does recognize freak pairs, and performs a role similar to that of a Church in this matter. Though, Vat Mother cult often also seeks out well compatible pairs of freaks and matches them together in order to produce high quality offspring and to further their slow and steady eugenics program upon the freak population. Though this pairing most often happens via subtle manipulation, not forced breeding, as there is no need for the later usually, due to the large cultural and social influence the Cult possesses.
Vatmothers have a bit of Bene Gesserit in them.
The Freaks do form familiar bonds, and most freaks do care about their own offspring and siblings. Many freaks born from the same "vat broods" also form a kinship with one another.

> Are the nobles interested in art?
Largely depends on the House culture, but ones like Baryx, Lienis, Viam and even Chot, are interested in arts, though widely different kinds from one another. Whereas for example, Rai-Khil views pretty much anything not related to war and killing as wasteful degeneracy, while house of Sloth has little interest in art as anything else than cultural relics of past and current eras, to be stored in their vaults for safekeeping.
>Do they have different artistic tastes then the common freaks?
Yes, by a huge margin.
The realm of the nobles is wholly different than that of the plebeian freaks.
>>
>>51917123

>>

>>51916660
>Do they have any city wide festivals.
Not really.
The city is not united. It used to be once, long ago, when the seven Noble families were still part of the one Great royal family, but that time is long in the past.
The civilized regions of the city are like clusters of light in the darkness, as most of them are separated from one another by large regions of uninhabited, decaying or dead stretches of the city, known as warrens, and only connected to one another via few water and landways. The warrens house dangerous beasts, mutants, aughounds, Rai-Khil raiders and other violent gangs, dangerous Drones, but also secrets and artifacts dating back into the long and storied history of the city (which I can elaborate further on the next post).

The various noble houses control a number of these inhabited regions, some more than others, though even then, the control is not necessarily completely concrete. Most of the Houses are largely only interested in holding vital infrastructure and regions of strategic importance, so while a region may namely be under the control of a certain house, in practice most of it is not and may easily fall under the influence of other houses.
This of course, is not the case in the heartlands of each noble house, where their primary estates and fascilities lie, (if they possess such things in the first place, of course). Those regions are firmly in the grasp of the Noble family making their lair there.

>At what time do freaks reach the age of majority?
I assume you mean maturity.
I haven't actually thought of that before.
I'd say that in street terms, when they can fend for themselves.

>Are there any guilds or groups that deal with civic infrastructure,
Yeah.
There are guilds that exist to facilitate transportation, building housing etc. Nobles form the political and military might in the city by large, though, as stated before, most major guilds have strong ties noble houses.

>>51917200
No problem.
>>
>>51917336
What about the rest of the setting?
If a majority of the setting is in the city (also whats the name of this city?), are there any other settlements across the whole planets? Is it possible that out there somewhere there is a less harsh maybe even peaceful settlement?
>>
>>51916888
It somewhat depends on under whose Noble house's influence you happen to live in.
In some regions, like that of Chot, life is grueling and miserable, to the point where many Chot slaves welcome Rai-Khil raiders as liberators instead of just other slavers.

Whereas in other regions, like those controlled by Lienis, you can pretty much do whatever the fuck you want, if you have the wealth for it.

Besides drugs and whores, there exists a wide variety of other "bread and circuses" within the city.
Shit like gladiatorial arena combat is quite common all across the city, though the details differ based on region of course. There are also things like bars and clubs where music is played, stuff akin to theater at wealthier regions (where Freaks actually have the free time to attend to such stuff), forms of sport like "kick the crippled mutie", hunting beasts for fun (and food), and of course, the sermons of the Vatmother Cult, which fills a role akin to the Church of Medieval europe, in Freak life.

There are, other, more esoteric forms of entertainment of course, based on more advanced technology, that is however, often far out of the hands of the common freak. Shit like jacking your nervous system into a device that lets you control some poor sod, streaming pure pleasure straight into your mind, hologram "movies" and so on. As a rule of thumb, the higher you go in the societal ladder of the city, the more advanced technology gets. This stranglehold on advanced tech is maintained by both the Noble houses as well as the guilds.

>What about the rest of the setting?
The city itself is quite vast, so I haven't put that much thought to the rest of the world.
For all intents and purposes, the city IS the setting.

Beyond it's borders, there are the desolate wastes to the west, and the great red sea to the east.
The wasteland and the deserts hide artifacts and secrets that are even older than those found within the city, but seeking them is even more dangerous than within the city.

In the red sea, stand the sentinel islands, a chain of spires rising from the shallow seafloor and standing guard against the open ocean. No one who has ventured beyond the storm ridden horizon that lies beyond the sentinel islands, has returned to tell the tale.

The Sentinel Islands house major Viam mansions, where the most decadent of the nobles can partake in their hedonistic pursuits far from the prying eyes of the rest of the city.

>(also whats the name of this city?)
I haven't thought up any real name for it, but in the major Freak myths, they call the city Sanctuary or Bastion.

>are there any other settlements across the whole planets?
Dunno. Again, because the city is largely the focus of the setting, I haven't put much thought into what lies beyond it.

>Is it possible that out there somewhere there is a less harsh maybe even peaceful settlement?
More peaceful and generally comfortable settlements are possible within the city's walls actually.
Though, that usually depends on the settlement being small and unimportant enough to stay out of notice of any of the more malicious major powers.

If you can create biological things at your whim then the term gender becomes a bit useless.

Not becaouse genders would disapear but because you would be able to create as many genders as you felt like by creating creatures that need intermediaries in their reproductive cicle to transform itself in as many bodies and forms as you want before creating the new individual.

They especially seek powerful technological relics and manuscripts that detail past eras.

>Do they know any of the true nature of the drones?
Maybe, maybe not. They horde knowledge, but have ages ago stopped truly learning and studying the knowledge they posses. They are like obsessive librarians, not scientists.
Thus, the secrets of the Drones, and answers to many other mysteries may lie in the data vaults of the house Sloth or Mholg, they themselves are very unlikely of ever putting that knowledge to any use.

>>51917599
I guess that it would really depend on the region, again. Like for example, in Chot territory, the moment you can work, you are no longer considered a kid, whereas in Baryx lands there would probably be some set standard and strict conditions for when one is considered to be no longer a mere child and in Lienis lands, it's pretty much up to the parents.

The Vatmothers probably consider one no longer a child once they reach puberty, or whatever the equivalent the freaks have. Also, the freaks probably mature at different rates. They aren't really human, at least not fully. They have many human traits, yes, but those traits have become twisted and degraded due to eons of mutation, and also due to genetic engineering.

>>51917636

>>51918097
Sure, if they augment themselves to such life.

Anyways, the brief history of the city/setting, from the heavily mythological perspective of the Freaks at least (because I haven't quite yet worked out the exact details of what went on)

So, basically, most Freaks believe that in the beginning, there were the Primordials, the creator beings that built the Sanctuary, and who fought a terrible war against the Destroyers which left the world in ruins, reducing the Sanctuary the last bastion of life in the known world.

The Primordials were ageless beings, who, if slain, would simply rise again as the city they made, would in turn, remake them. This is how they withstood against the Destroyers, and were able to overcome them.

Within the Sanctuary, the Primordials created life, that existed in perfect harmony with each other and the city. One of them however, desired more than the perfectly ordered harmony that was the Sanctuary. This trickster, tampered and altered the designs of the city, and convinced many of his peers to do the same. Their meddling wreaked havoc across the city and shattered the perfect harmony that had before, been the city. This grew great anger and ire from the other Primordials, which they turned upon the creations of the Trickster and his followers. In hopes of protecting their creations, these heretics guided and taught them to better hide from the eyes of those who would destroy them, but this only served to anger the Harmonics further. This conflict rapidly escalated to war between the Gods, between the chaotic forces unleashed by the Trickster, and the forces of Harmonics who sought to retain the perfect order of their city.

This war brought great ruin to the city, and led to the disappearance of the Primordials, leaving the People, the children of the Primordials, to inherit the city.

cont.

With the departure of their gods, the People inherited the city, and began to populate it. They faced many dangers, both in the forms of monstrous beasts of destruction and war that had been unleashed by the Primordials, as well as the countless hordes of the Defenders who sought to eradicate every trace of the People they could find.

The favorite children of the Primordials, the most gifted and talented of them all, guided the People all across the city, helping them survive, endure and eventually overcome the terrors left behind by the War of the Gods. This was the first era, and it ended when the Chosen Seven, favored children of the Primordials, rallied under one banner and formed the One Great House.

The second era, was one under the rule of the Emperors of the Great House, who ruled from the Grand Spire, the greatest and tallest of them all. Under the guidance of the Emperors, the disparate groups of People were united, the terrors left behind by the War of the Gods were driven back, and an era of great rebuilding and growth began. Unfortunately, it was not to be, for the taint left by the Trickster lingered all across the city, even within the People themselves. Virtues turned to Vices, and as eventually, the Great House fell apart, seeing a violent end to the Second era.
>>
>>51918922
The Third Era, also known as the Era of Succession Wars, was a great and terrible age that saw the Seven Noble families turn on each other in a violent contest to claim the Throne of the Grand Spire, and rule the city, caring little for the people they were supposed to actually rule. It was also the era, where the corruption within the People was made manifest within their flesh. This was the age that saw the birth of the Freaks, for the taint of flesh, mutation and corruption of blood, became widespread in this age. The Noble Families, ever vigilant and understanding of the threat of this corruption, were quick to shield themselves from it as best as they could, but the People, were not so fortunate. Unaware, and unable to fight against this taint, that was ruining them generation by generation, the People degraded into the Freaks, sickly, mutated and deformed creatures, mere shadows of their ancestors. This taint became so bad, that even the gift of life seemed to be doomed to be lost forever. Fewer and fewer children were conceived, let alone birthed, and the population of the Freaks fell into decline.
The Nobles either didn't notice, or care, for they were too busy waging war upon each other. Strongest of them, was the warlike and violent house of Ralkhai, that succeeded in claiming the Great Spire and dominating the surrounding region with brutal shows of force. Though the other houses rallied against them, none were strong enough to defeat them. Under their rule, the sickly freak masses were subjugated utterly, forced to construct great edifices of their Noble masters, and to work themselves to death. This brutal rule, combined with the spread of the Taint, saw the freak population decimated, but the Nobles cared not.

As the Taint spread further, further chaos and misery ensued, and for a while, all seemed lost, until by some miracle, the cult of the Vatmothers emerged. The exact details of the founding of this esoteric order are lost in history, but it is known that the cult spread across the city like wild fire, promising the restoration of the gift of life to all who would heed it's call. The desperate freak masses rallied to the cult, seeking a way of, if not restoring themselves, at least guaranteeing that their own children could be born.
The Noble houses, focused on their conflicts and schemes, noticed too late the power the Vatmother cult had gained, and were left dumbstruck as their own citizenry rallied against them in uncounted masses, when the Grand Matriarch of the Cult marched into the halls of the Great Spire, forced out the Nobles of Ralkhai and turned the spire into a temple of the All Mother. All across the territory of Ralkhai, the freak masses turned against their Noble oppressors, driving them out of their mansions and lesser spires, forcing them to flee into the warrens and catacombs with barely their lives.
This sudden shift in power saw House Lienis, ever greedy for more territory and wealth, quickly turn upon the remaining Ralkhai holdouts, destroying what remains of the house or so it seemed. However seeing the power the Vatmother cult held over the freak masses, none of the Noble families dared to rise against the cult and were forced to resign their claims on the Throne of the city.
Thus ended the third era, and the fourth era began. And thus house of Ralkhai, became the Rai-Khil raiders.

The Fourth Era, is the current era of the city.
It is marked by the cultural dominance of the Vatmother cult, and the economic power of House Lienis.
Though the level of violence between the houses has been greatly reduced, strife is still commonplace, and the scheming between the houses seems never ending. The damages left by the Wars of Succession are perhaps irreparable, both on the city, as well as it's denizens. Much of what once was, has been lost, never to be restored again. It is a time of great uncertainty, conspiracies, violence, danger and decay. The Grand Matriarch of the Cult sits in the Great Temple, communing only with her most trusted sisters, and her god, the uncounted legions of drones lurk underneath the city, waiting for their time to rise to the surface once more, the Seven Families, play their great game and bide their time to once again, ascend to the Throne, or simply exact bloody vengeance upon all of those who wronged them, all the while, even darker, forgotten threats and mysteries lie dormant and hidden within the unseen places of this once great Sanctuary.

Anyways, that's the rough history of the city.
Also, I made the doc so that you guys can modify it, as >>51918129 requested.

Are there schools and universities, as well as other religions with their own temples in the city? I can't imagine EVERYONE worships the All-Mother, or only her. Of course, there's got to be some way for people to become educated so they can at least do something productive. I imagine house Baryx has the most schools including all kinds that are more refined than all others, but Lienis has more business and trade schools, the Vatmothers have "medical" schools, Viam has public speaking, fiction and poetry workshops that teach freaks such beautiful manners of speaking that they can whip whole crowds into a frenzy (giving rise to more would-be prophets from Viam). The other faiths, if there are any, must have their own schools to teach their initiates the sacred texts and mysteries of their religions.
>>
>>51919432
I haven't yet worked out the concrete details of their faith, but the basic gist of their beliefs is that they are Servants of the All Mother, a life-giving deity that granted their fore-bearers the knowledge of how to ensure the continuation of the gift of life (ability to reproduce) and how to fight against the taint corrupting the world. They believe in reincarnation, and that the Taint is a manifestation of sins of one's past life, and that trough righteous living, over many generations, the freak population can be purged of this sin and restored to their former status, but that requires that each new freak must be born trough the cleansing vats, in which their purity will be judged. That is largely why the freaks born outside of vats, as in trough natural births, are seen as tainted and filthy, and called "gutterspawn".

The above is what they preach to the masses.
If they really believe in it, is not know. What their true goals are and what they seek to achieve via their guided breeding and eugenics, is far less clear.
>>
>>51919456
>Are there schools and universities,
Not really. Most education happens via apprenticeship in guilds etc, though the halls of the Vatmothers do offer some (heavily indoctrinating) education.

> as well as other religions with their own temples in the city?
There are, many are older than the Vat Mother cult, but individually they are far weaker. Most common faiths worship the Primordials as creator gods, and the Great Seven, the ancient heroes that defended the People against the darkness left behind by the War of the Gods. There are other, more esoteric faiths as well, ranging from the various self obsessive cults many of the Noble houses have built around their own ancestry and mythos, to ragtag gangs giving offering to the monstrous beasts hiding in the warrens, simply out of fear and to be sure.
Ancestor worship is also quite common.

>I can't imagine EVERYONE worships the All-Mother, or only her.
Most freaks who worship stuff, worship multiple deities, just to be on the safe side. Monotheism isn't really that common in the city.

>Of course, there's got to be some way for people to become educated so they can at least do something productive.
There aren't really the sort of schools we have today, but a gifted freak can find ways of educating oneself in all sorts of skills across the city, either via apprenticeship in a guilrd, or serving a noble house and being offered ways of further education.
In Baryx land, they do in fact have an institutional schooling program, for the talented freaks, so that they can become their best possible selves (and serve Baryx better trough that.) It is not due to benevolence, it is because of the tremendous pride and arrogance of Baryx necessitates for THEIR peasants to be better than the peasants of others houses.
>>
>>51919590
I don't suppose you've fleshed out any other religions in the setting then?
>>
>>51919737
Not to very great detail no. Most of my focus has been on the Noble houses for a while now.

Basic ideas for other religions I have are the aforementioned worship of the Primordials, various cults of Vice that linger within the Noble houses and their servants, and ancestor worship.

Out of the cults of vice/noble cults the ones I have most ideas for is the cult of the Rai-Khil, which is a religion that glorifies death, killing and violence.
The basic gist of the religion is that those who die in the glory of combat ascend to afterlife, and everyone they killed during their life, will be their slave in the afterlife. It basically is a faith engineered to glorify war.

Baryx has a cult that is basically a form of Primordial worship, but trough the Baryx Nobles, who paint themselves as the direct descendants of the Primordials.

Lienis has a cult of greed, that manifests mostly in the nobles themselves and is not really a religion per say. It is more of an ideology of utter greed and profit seeking. They are greedy bastards. They incorporate the most commonly used form of money (ring shaped shards of hardened biogel) into their clothing via bracelets, necklaces and other assorted accessories.

Viam could have some sort of cult of hedonism and sensation seeking, but I got no major ideas for it, nor any of the other potential Vice cults built around the other houses.

Also, the aforementioned biogel, which I foolishly had forgotten to mention earlier; it is basically the Spice of the setting. It is a precious organic substance produced by the city, that can be refined to basically any other living matter if you know how. It and it's various refined forms are used as fuel, raw material, to heal wounds and augmenting oneself, and even as a powerful narcotic that grants a heightened state of consciousness and some even say the ability to shape one's own flesh at will. It is also highly dangerous substance, whose prolonged use will corrupt one's flesh and blood.

>A bit of lore that they are either slumbering items of great power or act as cooling/ control rods. The shattered spires could be a reason why an area of the city dies/ gets sick.

The spires are basically hubs of city's internal activity. Their tops are covered in photosynthesizing foliage that produces energy to the city (though not all of the city's energy demands come from this), they work as exhaust vents for waste gasses produced by the city's internal processes, their bases extend deep into the city's foundations, and also house many of the production "organs" of the city, that provide the city as a whole with many of the substances it needs to sustain itself, and they also work as neural hubs for the city's "nervous system".

>>51922196
From deep within the city. It is produced within the foundations of the city, and pumped into the city's circulatory network.
The way it is harvested varies. There are "wells" of it, where raw biogel reservoirs are close enough to the surface to be tapped into by the Freak society, but most of it exists in diluted form, within the various fluids that are pumped trough the city's vein network. The Noble houses covet the wells most of all, and are willing to go to war for the possession of one. Many houses also possess refinery facilities that extract the diluted biogel from the fluids of the city and refine it into a more pure form.

What really bugs me here is the...incongruity? Of the art. Like, sapient vehicles (with handwavey do-anything nanobots)? That's cool, i quess. You could get a decent story from the premise. They can have sex and reproduce with humans? Well, that's weird, but it's the internet. There's a lot weirder porn out there.
But the fact that the artist draws realistic looking humans next the animated airplanes that look like they could've come from Pixar's Planes (complete with standard cartoon eyes just kind of stuck on them) just looks so off.

Why not both? Internal power struggle between the grubs and the sloths lasting ten thousand years. Some nobles aren't aware infighting has started
>>
>>51936668
If there was to be a civil war within the House of Sloth, it would indeed, take place in such a slow pace that they might not even notice.

I envision that house being spread around the city, within numerous different vaults buried within different regions of the city, perhaps remnants of an once more unified territory.

Just my opinion but I feel house baryx is a missed opportunity for body horror through plastic surgery and human ideals of "beauty" taken to terrifying extremes.
I'm thinking along the lines of parodies of extreme plastic surgery like repo the genetic opera or media mockery of modern celebrities and cartoons like sailor moon and he-man and the later dragonball stuff. I remember a comic mentioned in /co/, maybe ghostrider iirc, that had someone with something like flesh manipulation abilities who had taken a form like an extreme sailer moon which was as unsettling in the "real world" as you might expect.

The australian pain tree has thorns made out of silica so they act as hypodermic needles to deliver the neurotoxin that the plant makes for self-defense. Many more common plants form large calcium oxalate crystals in their leaves and stalks to cause microabrasions and irritation in those that would eat them.

No even more, we need to go deeper, so much so that they're as freakish compared to normal humanity as the rest of the freaks.

Big wide anime eyes taken to the level of greys.
Lips that are more some grotesque non-functional painted/carved on sculpture or even exaggerated to be prehensile and bordering on small "limbs" or organs for advanced body language communication.
Skeletally thin limbs or segments and/or muscles exaggerated and bulging beyond sensible functionality.
"Perfect" hair that's more like chitinous barbs/plates twisted in all sorts of extravagant shapes, perfectly unmoving or even twitching and whipping as if guided by its own personal wind or some bizarre instinct.
"Chiselled features" like an art-deco picasso.

I haven't quite yet nailed the ideal aesthetics I want for the Baryx nobles.
The ideas I have been having have been stuff like them seeking their own ideals of perfection of form, them resembling strange, marble sculptures and so on.
They aren't supposed to look exactly like humans, because the idea of what humans look like has been forgotten.
But that form, the ancient, and pure form, is what they seek. Picture sort of related.

>>51944767
I haven't thought up names for most of them.

There are big weapon manufacturing guilds, that produce the weapons most commonly found in the city.
Guilds that possess an armada of transport creatures which they use to ferry goods across the city.
Guilds that produce fabrics, guilds that produce various refined food items, guilds that specialize in infrastructure building (or mostly restoration, as there are plenty of ruined structures in the city that can just be fixed up). Basically, the guilds are the heart of the commerce and industry of the city.

Most powerful of them are the guilds allied with the Noble houses.
Big trading/transport guild known as Gol'Bax is firm ally of House Lienis, and thus quite powerful.
Another is Vandrax, a guild known for the powerful chemicals, poisons and drugs they produce. They are tied deeply to house Viam which uses, and often refines these poisons and drugs even further for their own ends.

Generally, each Noble house has a couple of powerful guilds as their allies. The allegiances of minor guilds tends to shift around, but the most powerful ones tend to be too deeply entrenched and invested into their Noble allies for them to switch allegiances.
House Lienis has most guild allies out of all the Noble houses, while House Rai-Khil is the sole Noble house that has no guild allies. What weapons, armor etc they make, they make themselves and the rest is taken from others by force.
>>
>>51945243
So are baryx actually descended from the gods or not?
>>
>>51946367
They aren't. They are a noble family just like the others, they have simply been most successful at preserving the purity of their blood from the taint.
Nobles and the freaks both descend from the people. They diverged because the people that did not belong to the ruling families, could not prevent the taint slowly degrading them over the generations.
