Song of Swords is a a tabletop RPG centered around realistic medieval fightan' with a ludicrous variety of weapons and fighting styles, centered around a dice pool system. It's currently in beta, and can be used for both fantasy and historical games. Kickstarter is happening NOW we are kicking ass baby!

Call of the Void: Ballad of the Laser Whales is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Its combat system is more modern, based in the early 20th century, but can probably handle combat up to the present day.

MEGA folder containing current version of the game and all supplementary materials.
Note that the latest version of the game is v1.9.9 but with additional supplements. It's NOT what's currently on Opaque's website, because Jimmy is Jimmy.

Here's a wiki detailing SoS's fantasy setting, getting filled up bit by bit as Jimmy reveals more details:

We also have a Discord now, at https://discord.gg/zzTq7Xw
Come join us if you wanna ask a question or have a friendly fecht, or shitpost at Jimmy in real-time

And a Rediit: https://www.reddit.com/r/SongofSwordsRPG/

There's also a roll20 room where new players are encouraged to try the rules, test new rules, and find game breaking issues: https://app.roll20.net/join/346755/hRKd4w
the room might be empty, but the people who teach the game still browse the thread frequently. If you're looking to learn, post here in the thread. We also play Guy Windsor's card game Audatia in the room.

AND THE LEGEND MARCHES ON!

There's no need to talk more about Song of Swords. In fact, probably avoid doing so to avoid looking like we're forum sliding, even if a local asks it's probably better to give a brief answer than to go off on a great soliloquy extolling the system's virtues. As long as the thread is bumped, the first post is advertisement enough.

Where can I find information on the magic system? if it has been revealed yet.
>>
Hey, isn't Lorea illegal? They only have 1 PCP in skills, rather than 3.
>>
>>51877951
And they have the highest power level. What a coincidence!
>>
>>51877951
That rule was never explicitly codified. It was brought up, but the conversation turned towards allowing "championing" a skills based character rather than forcing skills on someone.

Personally, I find it to be an arbitrary and needless restriction, since the actual amount of competency (in dice) provided by Skill PCP is almost negligible and can actually be outpaced by simply stacking INT.

Never mind that implementing that rule would damage my build.
>>
>>51878000
You're a cocksucker. Everyone who heard "Let's make actual characters to put in the book!" and decided to turn in a murderhobo is cocksucker. Please neck yourself.
>>
>>51878000
Does INT still provide Skills? I couldn't find it in 1.9.9. Besides, if you have fewer than 3 PCP into Skills, that's a pretty significant murderhobo marker.
>>
>>51877951
The tournament rules don't explicitly state a minimum Skills investment, but I think we did talk about it at one point.

>>51877943
Several test-level magic systems are out there, and they should be in the MEGA in the OP. Ballad's Void Magic, The Unkindley's Blood Magic, and Dark Pyromancy in the Star Vampire pdf.

>>51878102
Its a bad rule for a good idea.
We want lore friendly characters that are characters right?
The level of skills pcp shouldnt matter for that. It can contribute, but its not so fundamental to the issue to be the rule, but a measuring stick.

This is a world locked in strife, full of mercenaries and monsters. These people exist in Vosca, and I think execution matters. It's important to go for the fluff as well as the mechanics, and iirc the slot holder said he'll use his executive privilege to confirm or deny based on how much he likes the character/idea/whathaveyou.

Really, though, Skill-dumping is just an artifact of how shitty it is at chargen and that this is still, essentially, an entirely combat driven tournament. I really wouldn't mind if the Rule of 3 was implemented.
>>
>>51878024
Start your own Tournament next week with another KS prize of some sort with your own rules then.

A little late to fix this one now.

And I'd rather all the people coming to the system feel they are free to make the strongest characters possible so they feel comfortable making more story orientated ones later.

>>
>>51878241
I'm sure it wasn't, but no one put forward a character concept for new people to follow, nor did we enforce rules early on for 6 Attribute caps.

I will say that with everyone murderhoboing that no one really is.
Only that we've made non-plate armor somewhat useless.
>>
>>51878384
Most of the issue is that people stopped putting the rules in the OP. So when new people came in, they had to rely on anons to give them the rules. Which might have been wrong, or left things out (accidentally or otherwise).

Well, based on the math, yes. But it doesn't take into account that kickstarters usually increase in funding a bit due to their end (the math doesn't even know that there will be an end) and if any of those marketing/promotion connections actually pull through, that could bump the numbers up too. I don't expect some astronomical change, but if one or both of those happen and are kind of big, we could end up even as high as $30k. That's not a likely number, but it's well within the realm of possibility.

>The writing center works from several important beliefs that are crucial to helping writers write and succeed in a racist society.
>The racist conditions of our society are not simply a matter of bias or prejudice that some people hold. In fact, most racism, for instance, is not accomplished through intent.
>Racism is the normal condition of things. Racism is pervasive. It is in the systems, structures, rules, languages, expectations, and guidelines that make up our classes, school, and society.
>For example, linguistic and writing research has shown clearly for many decades that there is no inherent “standard” of English. Language is constantly changing. These two facts make it very difficult to justify placing people in hierarchies or restricting opportunities and privileges because of the way people communicate in particular versions of English

>muh language is always evolving meme

The whole point of a single standard of english education is to *prevent* languages fracturing into dialects and maintain the ability of the populace to communicate within itself capably. Clarity and precision of language is especially important in a society governed by so extensive a body of laws as the US has.
And calling it all racist ignores the MANY demographic divides that break up a language, the easiest to establish being simple geography.

REE, etc.

It also doesn't take into account variation according to time of week. We started off with a bang, then got weekend posters, then flattened out more. That Monday drop could be making the projection line flatter than it should be.
>>
I was reading over schools and it seems like most weapon types simply can not be used in self taught. Self taught requires you to take 2 instances of poor form at each tier including core maneuvers. Most weapon types only give you availability to universal maneuvers initially. That means you cant fulfill the poor form requirement.

Even if you didn't need to take poor form when you get core maneuvers you still couldn't get tier 1 with polearm because there are only 2 non universal maneuvers in the game for polearm and one of them only becomes available at tier 2.

I may be misreading something. If I did, I would appreciate it if someone could correct me.
>>
>>51883608
Pretty sure it means you take poor form if they're available. You also have to remember that you don't take poor form for Superior versions of Universal maneuvers.
>>
>>51883563
Is there actually a significant amount of variation due to time of week? I haven't analyzed it (and don't care to) but it doesn't seem obviously visible on other kickstarter curves.

If that's the case it may as well just say that you have poor form in all non universal maneuvers. Very few weapon types have enough advanced maneuvers to accommodate choice making
>>
>>51883860
But that's a terrible idea. It's good as it is. You'd have to be pretty silly to think that you couldn't take a proficiency if it had less than 2 advanced maneuvers.
>>
>>51883974
With the exception of 1h and 2h sword, when taking self taught, you WILL have poor form in all non universal maneuvers.

That's not a problem. I think it makes sense that, if you taught yourself, advanced maneuvers should be harder to learn. But if the net effect is approximately the same, why choose the more convoluted wording?
>>
>>51884086
Because it'd make the school even more worthless than it already is. If they made all three proficiency slots a +0, then I could understand your suggestion. As it is, a -1 to 2/3 of your proficiencies and a +1 cost to every advanced maneuver is a bit harsh.
>>
>>51884116
And a +1 cost to 2 advanced maneuvers per tier, I mean.
>>
>>51884116
The only thing that would suffer from the change would be 1H and 2H swords. That is all. All other weapon groups would function exactly the same as they already do.
>>
>>51884215
Why should 1h and 2h swords suffer?
>>
>>51884240
I was pretty sure the focus of this system was realism. It seems realistic that teaching yourself advanced fighting maneuvers would be hard regardless of the weapon.

I'll agree to this if we can remove instances of Poor Form at character creation at a reduced cost.
Primary Proficiencyx1 @ +0
Secondary Proficiencyx2 @ -1

All Advanced Maneuvers within the school gain Poor Form. Can be removed with 1 Arc. At character creation, you can remove 2 Poor Forms for 1 Arc up to X times.

I could get behind that. As long as the wording for buying them off is understandable I'd view it as an improvement.

Rolled 89, 5, 38, 51, 81, 12, 98, 59, 14, 78, 25, 68, 94, 32, 23 = 767 (15d100)

Good news everyone! It's time to determine the tournament matchup!

Because we conveniently have 15 fighters (so far), we will do a single elimination tournament. Here's how we'll slot them. I'll roll 15d100 in order, and the smallest number will be pared up with the next biggest number for the first round. For instance, if I roll 15, 72, 38, then Akakios Drekelos will fight Baru Kaidhazu in the first round. If any numbers are repeats, the number further down will be increased by one. So if I roll 55, 55, 55, it'll become 55, 56, 57, in that order.

One person will be lucky! Unless we have a 16th fighter join in, they'll skip the first round and move straight on to the second! This will be the fighter with the highest die roll.

Are you ready? Let's roll!

#1 Akakios Drekelos

#2 Azariah Ikesandar

#3 Baru Kaidhazhu

#4 Florock Germak

#5 Gandicze, Subject 19

So like TZMs. What if you have two weapons and they both stab at something with a +1 bonus ( say the chest). They obviously both get the extra dice but what about initiative? Which brings up another question. you've got two attacks, and someone steals initiative. Do they go before both attacks? If so should you get the +1 initiative from both attacks, as well as the +1 from each for stabbing? Or should they have to steal twice?

Well at least your chances of succeeding are much greater. Even if you end up failing, it may very well nullify or greatly reduce incoming damage. I did the math on chances of success and the odds are much better than a standard block maneuver

Everything I find says that in US English tourney and tournament are the same, while in UK English a tourney is a knightly tournament.

Since it qualifies as a tournament under the "A series of games; either the same game played many times, or a succession of games related by a single theme; played competitively to determine a single winning team or individual." definition, it's a tourney in the US but not in the UK.

Sort of. Being Prone halves your MOB, so it greatly reduces your dice available to Flee with.

I'm comparing it versus doing other maneuvers while Prone, which does become a significant boost

Rolled 46, 13, 8, 61 = 128 (4d100)

There are two fights left to do in Round 1 of the original roster! Here are the current standings.

Now we will determine the order of the newcomers, in exactly the same way as before. These newcomers will fight starting in Round 2, and the ultimate winner will go on to fight the finalists. I have a few ideas for how to handle this. The newcomers are:

#16 Sjornn Anfallare, Sea Raider

#17 Ozziah the Oathless, Ohanedin

#18 Giot Vaneleaux du Galli

What kind of premises/ideas do you think would work best for a quest run on a traditional forum? Updates would be daily at most.

I don't know if that means I'd have to run combat without player action or not. It'd be for people who aren't familiar with Song of Swords.

The first fight of the second round has begun and concluded! The fighters were rearing to have a go at one another. They were so eager to get at each other's throats that they didn't wait for me to announce the fight!

>#1 Akakios Drekelos vs #5 Gandicze, Subject 19

Akakios is a Purple Guardsmen. I have a particular affinity for characters of this background: my first game of Song of Swords was a Purple Guard game. These audacious, proud, even flamboyant warriors compete with each other to be the greatest specimens of mankind. The top Guardsmen join the Orredin in the floating city of Helion to breed the next generation of the sorcerer-elves. They're encouraged to feud with one another, and develop ever more standout forms of combat. (Think of them as a professional wrestling roster vying for the championship.) In this parliament of peacocks, Akakios stands tall. Face like a cut gemstone, voice like an avalanche, and vicious as a lion, the Grecian hoplite encountered the wretched Rosalie Azevedo in Round 1. Such was his honor that he stripped nude to make it a fair fight! But the craven knave was no match for the hoplite's might.

Akakios would beware, for might alone is of little use against Gandicze, or "19" as the Burdinadin has been nicknamed. Armored from head to toe in gapless power armor, this combatant is more akin to a steaming train than a humanoid. Wielding a mighty pollaxe, 19 exited the station full steam ahead, powering through the Kasel Longsword Jobber in less than two minutes! Plate armor crumpled like tinfoil before the supersoldier's strength. 19 feels the same awe while chopping wood that a man may feel while staring at a fire. The elf reveled in this obsession during the fight with Akakios, making splinters of the warrior's spear and nearly obliterating his stout round shield. Unarmed, prone, and with injured pride, Akakios yielded. Granting his final request, 19 allowed the hoplite to honorably fall off the Panoptica into the Inner Sea below.

A poleaxe is a medieval polearm used to kill people.

A pollaxe is what George Takei does when his poll doesn't go the way he wants it to
>>
>>51895469
I dunno about you, but when I was a kid learning my weapons and armor through playing Diablo, D&D, and Mount & Blade, a poleaxe was a long pole with an axe at the end, and that was it. No spike, nothing on the back end, no fancy queue spike. Just a big axe. Like a halberd without the spike, or a bardiche with a longer pole. Then I learn about HEMA and how there are about 500 different names for this particular weapon. Battle axe, knightly axe, just "axe" (like a rapier was sometimes just "sword"), poleaxe, pollaxe, pollax, polaxe, and possibly also a bec de corbin or lucerne hammer depending on certain qualities. I prefer pollaxe because that to me is distinguished from the poleaxe in my fantasy games in childhood.

New player here.
I'm not sure if I'm retarded, but what exactly does Beautiful [2] under Slave Social Class boons represent? Beautiful is only valid in [3] or [6]. Does it just mean the second level of Beautiful?
>>
>>51897958
I think Beautiful didn't get a level change for the rest of the rulebook. I believe 2 is 3, and 4 is 6.
>>
>>51897971
So I can't be a carriage-crash causing beauty / hunk if I start as a slave?
Damn.
>>
>>51897958
It's probably a typo, like Famous (3), which should be Famous (2). I think some of the Folks Back Home entries should be FBH (8), like, say the ones for (High) Royalty.
>>
>>51897984
Oh, you can. You can easily take Beautiful 6 through the boons/banes system.
>>
>>51898004
If you get Beautiful (3) from Social Class, can you put in another 3 to buy that up to Beautiful (6)?
>>
>>51898004
Yeah but you can't make skirts drop and belts click open in your presence >for free
Also, considering how "hard" the combat in this system seems to be, as in "lol you fucking died", is this one of those systems where you shouldn't get attached to your character and have like two or three backups ready at all times?
>>
>>51897984
It would cause lots of trouble for your master
>>
I've never backed a project on Kickstarter before. How does one determine what name is used as part as of the benefits?
>>
>>51898027
I believe you get asked that question after the project closes, either through a KS message or as part of the survey for PledgeManager/BackerKit.
>>
>>51898020
Probably not a bad idea, but it's also a system that encourages creating someone with a both of character and love.

You should be careful with your PCs and try to make them live, still stating up their vengeful brother might not be a terrible idea.
>>
>>51898020
I keep at least one or two backups, but that's just my personal preference. It's up to the player, really.
>>
>>51898021
