Wow, the new Titan Guard are cool and surprisingly well balanced. I dig them. I need more Vanguard for 40k anyway, and those are viable. I don't have a Titan, though. Anyone tried them as just a line of Reductor medium infantry?

>>51865992

Seems fine in 30k, since AFAIK it's AP=Strength. This is a sarge or special squad weapon, right? 20 of the WE nasty tacs with a S4 blast each would be a bit much, but that looks fine in smaller numbers. WE Special dudes with one each, Bolt Pistol and maybe a Power Lance trident thing might actually be cool as hell.

>The mass of the Lux Ferem could not be stopped, but it could be slowed just enough. The city-sized weight of the mass-conveyor was barely ten metres overhead, Magnus and his warriors safe within the crater pushed up into its belly as the rest of the vessel settled on the platform with a groan of metal that went on and on until if felt like it would never stop.

Given how short the two stories are, you've almost certainly spent more time begging for this than it would actually take to listen to the entire thing.

>’You are so like me in so many ways,’ said the Emperor. Magnus flushed with pride, but, as always, the Emperor’s words camed multiple meanings. ’You have a great many of my strengths, but strength magnified to excess eventually becomes a weakness.’
>’How can that be?’
>’Confidence can spill over into arrogance,’ said the Emperor. ’An obsessive pursuit of perfection can blind you to what it costs to achieve. Attention to detail can become micro-management. Magnus, you have my intellect and my power, but like me you are prone to believing you can do no wrong, that your intellect lifts you above the risk of making petty mistakes or errors based on emotion.’

>>51866304
Hope you have fun with it fella, that list looks horrible if someone didn't bring much anti-tank. Although if someone did you're pretty much screwed.
>>
>>51866304
That looks fun, and feels much more thematic than trying to shoehorn your units into a mix of tanks/fliers/pods. Have fun!

>>51866334
There's "bringing enough antitank" and then there's being able to stop two spartans and a mastodon in the 2/3 turns it takes them to reach your lines. I'm not sure most PUG lists reliably could do it, even tournament ones. Well, maybe 9-medusa reductor could, but fuck them.
>>
>>51866304
Looks shiny, and will be hilarious when a billion guys pour out of the (probably two left) party buses on Turn 2.

I think my usual list could probably handle it, just because almost everything in it can hurt AV14, and one will almost certainly die because a bunch of angry Hoplites got dropped behind it, but that's the usual thing when fighting Mechanicum, since we don't really care what your Armour Values are, whether your Ceramite is Armoured or you've got a Flare Shield up on anything short of a Titan. Against the vast majority of Legion and Solar Aux/MaC lists I can see that doing just fine. At least you have the Skyreaper to kill Vulturax and Lightnings fairly easily, 5 S7 Twin-linked Interceptor shots will almost certainly render Strike fighters useless.
>>
In the armored breakthrough rite of war does my warlord have to be a tank or could I take a regular praetor as my warlord?

A quick thought for mechanicum players (and those taking allied mechanicum): if you're taking a magos prime, consider the malagra as a unit buff-giver, giving preferred enemy to their unit against a lot of stuff:
>if one model in unit has PE, entire unit gets it
>if one model in target unit is of type PE activates against, all attacks against that unit get the PE rerolls (this is why raven guard's decapitation strike got nastier since the last FAQ)
>Malagra has Preferred Enemy (Characters)
>almost every non-vehicle unit in a legions astartes or militia army contains a Character (the sergeant, or equivalent)
>therefore, a unit containing a Malagra will get PE against a large amount of a LA/militia army

You do realise that's it's more than likely non-players, that just read the fluff, don't even paint and end up shitposting because that's all they can do, prenteding to defend one side or the other, like consolewars threads on /v/, right?
And the other side pretending to be triggered, which turns the whole thing on its head and is just meaningless.

No problem, I enjoy homebrew loads but many attempts turn into extremes due to the creator being afraid of being OP so makes it 50% more expensive than it need to be or they think their awesome character needs to be on the table so you end up with something approaching 5th ed Draigo for 180 points.

5HP AV14 all around with AC and Flare Shields. YEs, you can drop one if you really dedicate to it, but you can take everything out if you really dedicate to it. Question is, how do you know beforehand what to dedicate to?

It's not the tank itself that's the problem, it's the tank in combination with what it transports. Rhinos and regular LR only transport 10 dudes. It's easy enough to deal with your blobs. But when it's up to 25 dudes... What other mass transports of equal quality do you have?

It's the flare shield that's the real game-changer. If it was just a buffed land raider, we might actually see MSU land-raider termies more. (Though even then, not having the ability to throw a character in is a big downside to 30k landraiders.)
>>
>>51870547
Oh they totally are. The local meta here even has evolved beyond taking things to wreck a spartan asap : people just have a cheap unit like tacticals, usually in rhino, run in the way of it constantly untill the occupants charge it. The charged unit dies obviously, but then the entire gunline just opens up on that deathstar now pretty much caught with their pants down.

That's not to say people skipped on any anti-vehicle weaponry, in fact it means that the often large amount of points spend on unit(s) to take out a spartan are now invested in spammable anti-vehicle units.

Yeah, it's very good at carting around unnecessary numbers of Terminators, but do you really need one for every Tactical Squad when you're not playing World Eaters? Most people manage fine with Rhinos or nothing.

>>51870665

Yeah, they do dramatically worse against the Flare because the Lance guns can't glance anymore, but it's not too hard to maneuver tough Jet Infantry around it, barrage ignores it, melee doesn't give a fuck and if your Lightning is shooting it it won't care much and blow it to pieces anyway.

But there is no rule nowhere that walkers lose another attack when they exchange or lose their single CCW. The rules for walkers and how multiple CCW work for them in the main rulebook still prevent that. The part FW put between the ( ) is only for clarification you numbskull.

Remember that there is no such thing as 'timing' upgrades : you only look at the end result. You also can't upgrade a marine to carry a heavy weapon and upgrade him to a sergant after that, because the end result would be a sergant with wargear that is not listed as one of his options, and therefor illigal
>>
>>51871070
The additional attack was granted because you got the fist. If you exchangethe fist out, you get nothing out of the fist because the fist is not there. You don't exchange your bolt pistol with a plasma pistol and then start shooting with the bolt pistol.

Unless someone from FW had a brain injury and FAQ'd this into existence, I think that view fails the smell test.

You swap the items of your starting wargear for the options that are provided for each wargear, ie: you can't select a weapon option after you've already selected a weapon option.
In essence, you're swapping your TL Heavy Bolter for a Volkite no matter how you cut it, the anon who thinks he can add another step to gain the benefits of having replaced it with a CCW is using bad logic to stretch the meaning of "replace" in ways that aren't normally (if at all) permitted or included in warhammer rules.

Then they should have put "gives +1 attack in conjunction with the existing fist", because right now the wording doesn't mention the other fist in any way and the +1 attack is purely the result of the model having that fist that replaces the TL HBs.

>Remember that there is no such thing as 'timing' upgrades

What does that have to do with anything? The +1 attack given by the fist has no bearing on whether or not the other fist exists, as per the rules in the book.

No, the dispute is about replacing the starting wargear TL HB for a power fist (thus gaining +1 attack as per the rules in the codex) and replacing the starting wargear power fist with a gun (no mention of losing an attack). You still got a fist and a gun, you just gain an attack, as per the rules, for the fist you replaced your HB with while you don't lose an attack for replacing your existing fist with a gun.

FW could have just said that the second fist gives the dread +1 attack with the fist it already had, but they elected to just have the fist itself give +1 attack regardless of whether or not you keep the original starting power fist.

FW should not have but the part between ( ) there in the first place, as it is perfectly covered by the main rulebook.

Sometimes I wonder when the last time was the rules team at FW actually saw the 7th edition rulebook. With their Scout and Outflank too on recon squads, bonus to 'Sweeping Advance Distance', being forced to sweeping advance as a drawback, giving artillery units two different unit types ...

Every single recent book from Abnett has been a trainwreck. Hell, he hasn't written a 40k book in years, only HH. We've been waiting for The Warmaster for years for fuck's sake.

Really, he should just stop writing for the HH altogether, and stay catered to one off, selfcontained books.

>>
>>51871594
>Russ is too strong

I honestly don't think so. He gives minimal benefits to his army(and unlike Magnus, those are actually minimal) and you can just shoot him to death.

Yes, he can murder everything in duel, but most of things he is "OP" against are the kind of fighters that get tied down for the entire game anyway.

But yeah, Magnus with Sekhmets is just brutal. Even if we ignore Invisibility, killing 2+/3++ 2w dudes gets that much harder with Endurance and that -1 to hit, assuming that Magnus wasn't a count and rolled for a Nova instead.
>>
>>51871527
The yiffs and sons have interesting lists but both are prohibitive due to special rules. Neither will perform very well in kill teams or -1000 point games which is a shame since half the missions are low points.
>>
>>51871423
I see where you're coming from now.

However, there's a point that's overlooked in this: a dreadnought that has "swapped" their TL bolter for the +1A CCW, while having swapped their basic CCW for a ranged weapon, is not any different than a dreadnought that has swapped the TL bolter for a different ranged weapon.

Else this +1A would apply to every Contemptor dreadnought and the option wouldn't be there. And even if the rule held true, having two melee weapons would by the BRB give the dread an extra +1A then, so this interpretation of RAW only means that a CCW+Gun dread has 4 attacks while a ranged one has only 3, something that would be stated if that was actually the case, so this whole rules-lawyering tack is barking up the wrong tree.

Quick rundown:
>Dread starts with CCW and TL Heavy Bolter
>You can swap your STARTING TL-Heavy Bolter for a CCW which gives you an extra attack
>You say you can swap the STARTING CCW for a gun, "swap" the TL HB for the CCW which says taking it gives +1A, and then claim that you gain the bonus.
>But you can't because you are not actually swapping the CCW the dreadnought starts with, because the dreadnought never has the item of wargear that it starts with replaced with anything different. In other words, your one-CCW dreadnought has the CCW he started with, not one that was "replaced", because no "replacement" took place.
>>
>>51871691
>Neither will perform very well in kill teams or -1000 point games which is a shame since half the missions are low points.
I can't speak for Wolves, but TSons are surprisingly efficient in low points since they get to get more out of those d6 bonus charges.

SW:
Decent, they're faster and less directly choppy World Eaters. Russ' armour is a little OP because it cripples everything near him, not just his challenge opponent (although he can be shot up fairly easily) and they have rather too many power weapons for Troops choices, everything else is fine.
Russ does also have fairly pitiful DPS for a melee Primarch, he wins every duel very slowly because of the armour. Can't outdamage Morty sometimes.

1Ksons:

Psychic bullshit, what did you expect? Magnus is OP as hell, Sekhmets will be a real pain, everything else is decent.

Custodian Guard:
Rather too cheap for what you get, but vulnerable to a great many things and very specialised to beating other elites faces in melee. Legions have trouble if their lists are too elite and based around popping other Marines, anyone else is just fine.

Sisters:
Niche, and largely unremarkable. Mostly significant because Ksons may now up the amount of pysker bullshit because "Just ally in Sisters".

Titan Guard:
Shiny, fluffy, very powerful in places. New tank is awesome-looking but sadly very shit. Hoplites good for making Spartans sad, Peltasts are superb line infantry and Axiarch FnP buff + Titan makes them supremely durable, approaching Terminator levels of tankiness against small arms. May be a bit OP at large games where they can have 60 Peltasts like that and two Hoplite squads in Arvus if there's a Warhound about, regular games they'll probably be fine.

really depends on what you get out of it and it's not always that critical, whereas it's hard to pull together an efficiently costed list that has all the bells and whistles for objective play. I doubt FW really intend the release to cater to low costed games overmuch, the main units are mostly viable in 1500+ same for the rites.

Anything that closes off popular fan theories/reduces the flavour and potential for unique "your dudes" settings within the overall setting.
If I wanted a precisely mapped-out sterile universe, and not a flavourful one with intriguing contradictions and no clear answer, I'd read Star Wars Legends, not HH/40k.
>>
>>51871599
The reason for this is for a solid two year period, everything 40k HAD to be tied to a specific product, or at least make overt references to it AND had to hit a deadline so it would release in close proximity to the specific product. Abnett told them to fuck off and went to do other stuff. Now that the old management is gone, things are back on track where authors have more freedom when it comes to 40k releases.

Not if you look at the context of the post he was replying to, even though the language did sound like it was describing something physical.

Russ has "exothermic" armour that somehow makes the area around him less hot and bright, armour whose effect is to, for no reason, make enemies who last in combat against him be unable to hit him because apparently their joints are freezing up due to the cold that his exothermic armour is somehow radiating out.
It's not even very in-character either. Russ and the SW would look down on someone who used technology to prevent their enemies from fighting, they'd just concentrate on out-fighting the enemy. That's more something Perturabo or Mortarion would have.

>HH is in hindsight, they can't write anything without 'closing off' possible interpretations.
They can though, at least they should if they have any sense.
Not everything needs to be played at the highest level of influence all the time like a Star Wars novel. I'm not talking about NOT showing stuff the Primarchs and named characters did during the heresy, of course not, that's a false dichotomy. I'm talking about not giving us the Emperor's internal monologue during the whole of the Siege of Terra up until he gets put into the golden throne. Characters like the Emperor and things like Chaos are far more interesting when the audience has to engage with them on the same level as the trillions of people within the Imperium have to. Otherwise if we know DEFINITIVELY that Chaos is inherently bad, that the Imperial Truth was a ruse all along, that the Emperor isn't really a god, that the Mechanicum are simply the slaves of the Void Dragon who is definitely a C'Tan who fought with the Emperor, and so on, the question of motivations of people on the different sides become much less important and engrossing because we know where the actual truth lies in ways that they don't.
>>
So anyone actually played a game with the Titan Guard yet? Was considering a couple units of 20 Peltasts to run with when I bring the StormWhale (Which is now on hold for a few weeks AGAIN because reasons :( ) since they, plus the Archmagos, the Axiarch and a few Myrmidons fill it to capacity neatly.
>>

>>
>>51872222

>>
>>51872159
It's not about the enemy not expecting him to cheat, it's about him having to use a cowardly tactic to avoid winning great melee battles. It doesn't really gel with a legion who are so dedicated to individual glory that organised squads are much less common than blobs of glory-hungry warriors who want to bash the enemy to pieces rather than use tactics.

I'm actually pretty happy with the way wolves worked out overall as an army. Theres some cool characterful units, Grey slayers are a cool twist, varangyr are literally THE deathstar unit and deathsworn are the combat unit i will probably never field.
Nothings stupid overpowered, its all themed, and I'm overall happy.

Then comes Russ, one of the most expensive primarchs to buy, for no reason, and one of the most stupidly stong primarchs. So thanks FW, for throwing your shit in the air and making it a pain in the dick to ever field my primarch between actually buying him and the shit ill get for fielding him.
>>
>>51872290
Missing the point. It's not cowardly to fight to win, it's cowardly to fight in such a way that your enemy is prevented from fighting back.
If Russ is on board with that, he might as well be given the Hit-and-Run special rule.

>>51872248
Magical weapons and armour is a major feature of norse myth, Vikings/Danes/Saxons weren't celts who went into battle naked and appreciated good craftsmanship and metalwork which is why most dwarfs get copy pasted as norse. Also it sort of fits Russ's character as always bringing the wrath of Fenris itself with him and it's like a test of hardiness for his opponents. He has to endure that cold as well.

>>
>>51872248
No, Space Wolves are, as their name suggests, Pack-Animals. They are ferociously smart and work together to bring down much larger enemies. They aren't just a rabble of glory-hungry Vikings. The only ones to act like that are the Blood Claws, but that's because this is their very first battle, and even they understand the simple tactic of "Everyone pile on at once!"
>>
>>51872558

>>
>>51872413
Well that maybe true, but unless thermodynamics reversed itself between now and M31 he'd be toasty warm in there if he's taking in enough heat to slow down his opponents from cold. Also not much of a test of hardiness when it affects anything up to and including his brothers and as far as I know a Warlord Titan. Maybe if it happened on a failed Strength test or reduced Initiative it would make more sense, throw in giving him actually decent combat skills too so he can actually fight of course. He does less damage in melee than Mortarion sometimes, that sword and axe are a bit pitiful.

Yeah, that's why I have to build them myself. Probably gonna use MkIII with the FW torsos, wulfen hands (convert hammers into axes) and find some 3rd party heads or helmets for them. Would love some wolf skull helmets, but nobody makes any. All the wolf head helmets I find look terrible, even the GW ones. Wulfen heads don't work that easily with Marine models, regular SW heads aren't bestial enough or look like hobos, and 3rd party ones are just plain werewolves.

Maybe I'll look into BA heads with some green stuffed facial hair. They got fangs and angry grins on them. Already got some to use on my Scouts.

Dreadnoughts and Megarachnids.

A friend of mine was talking about this a while ago. He told me that there was an old story of a Traitor-Guard in a Leman Russ shooting away into the Space Wolves lines, when it get's mobbed by Blood Claws. At more than a five-man squad, yes, particularly when a dreadnought will be more robust but also suited for anti-vehicle use IMO. Take the autocannons rather than the MLs, if it's at such a price range, there's no downside unless the enemy overwhelms you with militia blobs.

I doubt the armour is using the energy around it to produce internal heat, I think it's something to do with how it is powered. His legion are probably happy enough in the cold and I don't know about the titan but presumably the more energy around him the more his armour drains and the greater the exothermic effect. His statline is pretty good overall and Russ was never meant to be the strongest of the Primarchs unlike Angron and Mortarion or Horus.

At 1500 points, heavy bolters can be worth it if you're playing one of the legions that get a boost to them - DA and IF, basically.

Lascannons are for larger games and probably should be in a bunker or void shield generator.

>I doubt the armour is using the energy around it to produce internal heat
You don't need to want to use the energy to produce internal heat. Heat will produced simply because of the laws of thermodynamics.
On layman's terms, have you noticed how the backside of an AC unit gets hotter than the surrounding environment, and that the effect is more pronounced the colder the cooled room is?
Now, you're not spending electricity on heating the atmosphere...but it is a SIDE EFFECT.
Going by Russ' armour's description, he'd be hotter insid of it than Vulkan on a sauna on Nocturne.

>>51872684
I was going to call this ridiculous, but then I remembered marines can eat their way out if trapped behind iron bars due to their acid spit. Then again, it IS stupid because that case gives a lot of time for the acid to act on the metal, and IG tanks are made from gud thick steel rather than mere window-protection bars.

There's those ones who are like a reverse-Lamenters, they're memetic jerks instead of memetic kind-hearted punching bags, and they're also Yellow. Salamdanders didn't get on with them at all.

Brummbär had a range of several kilometers, though. It's not like it just drove up to something and put a 15cm shell through them at point blank range. It's more like the early series StuGs with their short 75mm guns that provides fire support.

Really? I didn't research the Sturmpanzer but the consensus I saw on the internet was that the ISU didn't really do long-range barrages even if it had the technical specs to do it.

And it and the Sturmpanzer were designed for doing the Vindicator's job, not principally a behind-the-lines thing, what with all that armour.

They were founded before 40k, are they not fair game?

Which legions build the best out of B@C box sets? I'm torn between SNEEKI BEEKIs and Drop Pods or Imperial Fist blobs

It's not a case of "founded before 40k" (because that's everything) but one of "founded post 31k".
>>
>>51873711

no.
the second founding does not occur until after the Heresy.
the Horus Heresy, is as the name implies, set in the heresy, not after it hence the splitting of legions hasn't happened, and all the successors do not exist in their 40K form, if at all..

They're both good, I'd say go with your heart.

Personally I went for Fist blobs, and it's pretty decent, though if it's your first time painting, you should buy a tactical squad or two and perfect your yellow on them before moving onto the Fists.

I've no experience with RG, but they sound tricky to play (though far from limited to drop pods), and black can take some experimenting (but maybe only 10% of what yellow needs) to decide which method is best. Good luck,

Of those two, easily Fists because the box doesn't come with any Beakies. And IF are much more likely to use Cataphractii Terminators. They get to teleport them, while RG aren't really into heavy armor (let alone dreadnoughts). Speaking of the Contemptor, its ramrod-straight pose is very IF.

The Astartes present during the Heresy are the 18 First Founding legions, and a slowly increasing number of blackshields (wandering legion-less marines, usually fighting on the opposite side as the rest of their legion). They're a pretty new addition, only added to the background in FW's HH book 6, Retribution.

It's heavily hinted that a lot of them will later be "brought into the fold" as chapters. Not in the Second Founding, which just split the surviving loyalist legions, but later ones. So you can pick a 40k chapter without an established history (or make one up, which is safer) and write its history. They have their own rules, though.

Using a legion's rules with an unrelated chapter's color scheme is often frowned upon in the Horus Heresy gaming community. It can be done, but not if it just looks like you're trying to run a 40k army in a 30k game. This is a "historical" setting focused on those 18 legions (and the Mechanicum, and Imperial Army, Custodes, Sisters of Silence, Warp Cults, Titan Legios, Knight Houses...).

Christ, those cost FW money! And they just had to put in one helmet that I don't particularly like, so it'll be even harder to get an even 10. And they don't just give a flat shipping rate to where I live, I have to contact them to make a deal.

Interesting, he seems strong, since he's got praetor tier gear as a forgelord, but he's costed to fit. I don't like the giving out hardened armour for free though, considering it costs a HWS 25 points.
>>
>>51874308
So, by sheer dint of being there up to three units gain Hardened Armour, yet another three vehicles gain Infiltrate/Scout (and thus Outflank too) and then another unit gains Vengeance rounds?

Pick one, m8.
Even Autek Moonman only gives a single unit PE and him too, so that's two units.
Give one unit both Vengeance rounds and Hardened armour, and have his WT give Scout to a single vehicle unit (3 Preds, 3 Dreads, a single Creed-pattern Warhound, etc.)

I mean, it's not like regular RG Breachers can't already infiltrate their LR DTs.

Hey, how about giving him a Master-Crafted Thunder Hammer?

>Ahriman meekly apologies
>This happens 2 or 3 times
>Ahriman senses danger like Counsellor Troi
>Forrix tells him how and where to look
>Ahriman goes astral plane to check
>Literally 20 seconds later Forrix sees where the danger is anyway
Meanwhile Atharva and Hathor Maat compete to be worst archeologist ever no reason other than it might be a laff. Oh and Brosis T'Kar just hangs out as The Slightly Aggressive One Who Gets Talked Down To By Everybody.

Basically, the Sons are incompetent constantly and the minute they don't act like meek nerds and take their direction from the superior in every way Iron Warriors they get slapped down like they're being huge assholes.

It's a really weird book. Like it tries to accuse Magnus of his usual huge arrogance and reckless search for knowledge, but he goes out of his way to be careful, helpful and compassionate (and gets fucked in the ass for his trouble, admittedly by his own incompetence) and it's the fucking loser duo of Atharva and Maat who pull the retard Indiana Jones, knowing that Magnus won't like it, and he has to go clean up their mess. Again, by trying to be careful and compassionate, and again, is such a fuck-up he gets his men killed.
Like, if you're a TS fan, this TS book pisses in your chips. Weird, real weird.

He writes good action, but he can be lazy and/or erratic with his characterization. Yesugei, the White Scar librarian/stormseer at the Council of Nikea, was a straight up ching chong stereotype in A Thousand Sons - fortunately Chris Wraight fixed him.
