I kinda want to get this mentality out that having a single Riptide is "OP". It's not. They're the Tau's TEQ. It's fair if they can have one if you bring some Termies or a Land Raider. If they bring multiple and in the Wing, then yes that is pretty cheesy.

Also Kroot are shit. They're just expendable meatshields. Having a whole army oriented around them would be incredibly boring. If Tau auxiliaries had the same love that Genestealers then that would be fine.

A "fun" army to play against is something that tries to bring all the neat units into the battle in a combined arms fashion. Not just spamming any one single unit. A good Tau player would know that some well supported fire warrior unit is a cheaper and arguably better source of anti infantry fire power than the other units.

I'm so tired of hearing non Tau players complain about "muh Battlesuits or muh Riptides" They're there in the codex, they have a purpose, just like the FWs.source then any of the battle suits. Just because you get butthurt at the cheesemongers doesn't mean that the other Tau players have to stop using a particular unit. Quit bitching.

A Riptide reaches across the board and deletes entire squads from turn 1 with little risk. A terminator squad in a LR takes 2-3 turns to even reach combat.

I want to build an Ork army centered around fliers. Dakkajets, Bommas, Stormboyz, probably even Warkoptas for even more flying stuff.

How well would this sort of thing work out? Are there any planes I should take/avoid? Anything particularly good I should stick in the copters?
>>
>>51860142
>Land Raiders
>ever worth their points
>compared to a Riptide
Terminators working the way they should is a bit more plausible but even that is often a coinflip and not comparable to what a single Riptide can do in comparison, considering the hoops you have to jump through in order to even get Assault Terminators into combat in the first place.

SPACE WOLF PLAYERS

What is different about your average army that sets it apart from vanilla Marines? What unique units do you often take? Is the army dynamic different from vanilla, and if so, how?
>>
>>51860193
They are. They're 200 points for a crappy MC with a crappy witchfire.

They don't even get a good Invuln like Zoanthropes. Would have been so easy to make them walking psychic tanks with long-range Warp Lances, Force talons, and ways to deflect bullets, but no.

It's shit, and this is coming from someone that actually owns one of the fuckers. No way is it worth 720 points.

It might be okay if made a Daemon Titan of Tzeentch and Grimoire'd, but it would still struggled to make its points back over the whole game.

The 30k version is alright because of the buffs it gets, but still struggles for similar reasons.

Don't take a Titan. Take a Renegade Knight, or two if you really must blow your points on big models.

Almost finished a squad of scourges and just received my beast pack in the mail

crisis suits are totally fine when they arent included in some retarded formation.

about to build a second CCS box
>>
>>51860479
If you don't take Riptides and try not to spam, you should be fine. You could probably go Farsight enclaves, take crisis troops, and then take Stealth suits to support them.

Main thing I would warn against with that is not optimizing your Crisis suits too hard. Try to avoid spamming single man teams, throw in some burst cannon or missile squads for variety. Generally just mix things up.
>>
>>51860479
Take no more than 1 unit of crisis, and 1 ghostkeel (no optimized stealth cadre). No other suits except stealth suits. You can easily still makea good army relying on hammerheads and infantry.

Imo it's the way tau SHOULD be played. Their mechs should be specialust units, not the backbone of their army.

Considering Cypher is coming and shown with a crapload of black Dark Angels, with a Dark Angel helmet and their banner on the box art for the Triumvirate, it's pretty safe to assume that they'll be getting an upgrade in the form of Cypher's guys.

Just because the GW Custodes kit is plastic does not make the army cheap. We already have the Caladius and friends, and the Contemptors, all with FW pricetags. When the conversion kits come I expect the army's pricetag will make another leap.

True. But if both players run heavy infantry it's still fun.
>>
>>51860646
That's because generalists cost more, because they don't get a discount based on the fact that doing 5 things half-decently doesn't matter when you'll only do 2 in any given match.

>>
>>51860661
Which is fine, but it'd be nice to be able to match up against a larger variety of lists.
>>
>>51860460

Don't.

Don't be that guy that brings Skyhammer in a sub 1000 game.

Get a Chaplain or Captain, build him however you think looks coolest, stick him with a bunch of angry dudes that match his mobility type (foot, jump or bike) and go wreck some shit in melee like a champion of the Emperor should.

Use one of these as a small Death Star depending on what HQ you run.

Honor Guard in a pod.
Command Squad on Bikes.
Vanguard with Packs.

Look for efficient means of antibiotics light vehicle, you can punch or ignore the heavy stuff. Devastators with Missiles can work, Land Speeder Typhoons can also lay down some light AT work for cheap and Stormtalons are as awesome as ever.

You probably don't need much anti-horde, as you can sweep most of them that aren't fearless, although Thunderfire Cannons are practically anti-everything.

Also everything that you plan on moving even an inch needs to either be fast or in a Transport. I like pods, but Rhinos can work too.

Two questions. Airbrushing and painting black.

There are a billion ways I can find to paint black. I'm basically just doing guardsmens boots, what's the quickest but still decent method of doing it?

The second is airbrushing, I'm a bit overwhelmed with all the choices. Is there a basic recommend brush kit?

I kinda want to get this mentality out that having a single Carnifex is "OP". It's not. They're the Tyranid's TEQ. It's fair if they can have one if you bring some Termies or a Land Raider. If they bring multiple and in the node, then yes that is pretty cheesy.

Also Gaunts are shit. They're just expendable meatshields. Having a whole army oriented around them would be incredibly boring. If the small bugs had the same love that Genestealers then that would be fine.

A "fun" army to play against is something that tries to bring all the neat units into the battle in a combined arms fashion. Not just spamming any one single unit. A good Tyranid player would know that some well supported Biovore unit is a cheaper and arguably better source of anti infantry fire power than the other units.

I'm so tired of hearing non Tyranid players complain about "muh Carnifex or muh Tervigon" They're there in the codex, they have a purpose, just like the FWs.source then any of the bio-titans. Just because you get butthurt at the cheesemongers doesn't mean that the other Tyranid players have to stop using a particular unit. Quit bitching.

Well, I've been trying to do just that with several variations of that suggestion and even tried bringing a fucking Land Raider out of despair and have constantly gotten my shit pushed in harder than even the local Tyranid and Ork players.

Not being able to charge out of vehicles unless it's a Land Raider is such a fucking bullshit cockblock for Marine armies. Footslogging is not an option in the slightest due to how insane shooting is this edition and using Rhinos to get in charge range is not a working option either because by the time I actually get to charge everything has moved away, turned around and shot my squad down so much that I can't take on anything.

Even when a melee unit, like a Captain in a small Deathstar, manages to do well they always ended up performing SO well that I immediately killed whatever I charged and stood butt-naked in the open for their next shooting phase.

I'm starting to get pretty desparate at this point so Skyhammer is already starting to look interesting, but I don't want to sell my soul either.
Was thinking of maybe getting a Vindicator as armored support to soften up their lines a bit before even thinking of sending anything into melee.

Sadly, it's really not. Start Collecting sets value in worth and points. Some (Necrons, SW, arguably DE) are actually pretty great formations, while others (Guard, ORKS, Chaos because at least Marines get an okay formation bonus) are hot garbage even if modelwise they're a good deal. I always, always advise against Start Collecting leagues for this reason, not to mention the actual points costs of each formation are all over the place balancewise.

Start them off with Kill Team instead.

Sorry to tell you, Anon, but ever since they removed WAAAGH! Plane, Ork fliers are shit. And I mean, that's comparative to the rest of the Ork Codex.

We're talking Nobz in a 'Naught meme level bad performance.

Deffkoptas are pretty okay. I prefer to give them the weaker weapons so the enemy ignores them, and then use them to nab/contest Objectives with their speed.

Storm Boyz are very fun to run, but very not worth their cost if you're trying to win.

So how would you design a Skitarii Primus as their HQ and a customizable Archmagos for Cult Mechanicus?
I feel like Skitarii should at least get a Primus as their HQ, since those are usually their canonical leaders during operations and are much stronger than any of their normal Alphas that you are meant to use as Warlord.

I'd probably give them a WS 4, BS 5, give them 3 wounds and a Master-Crafted version of either a Radium Carbine or Galvanic Rifle as their default Loadout and make them like 30-40 points. From there, allow them to use any ranged weapon Skitarii Infantry can use, including all Pistols and Stub Carbines. Also give the option of using a melee weapon like on normal Alphas or alternatively use a Pistol in their melee hand (so possibly using 2 pistols). Relics should just be the regular Skitarii collection and they'd obviously have access to all 6 of their Warlord traits.

I assume those that become too old to perform frontline duty end up training the youngsters, putting their centuries of combat experience to good use in raising new generations for war.

I'd honestly figure that marines that become too old for that would either push themselves to the front for one last fight, or get the Apothecaries to administer the Emperor's Peace in quiet.

They might even second themselves into the Deathwatch to find their death far from the duties of their Chapter, which might want them around indefinitely for their experience, regardless of their ability to fight. And if it's really bad they might actually ask for a discharge by forsaking their equipment and heading into the wilderness of a Deathworld, probably the Chapter Homeworld, to fight some monster or other until they find a foe worthy enough to end them. These Marines would never be listed as discharged, though, but striken from the Chapter and usually, as a point of honor, listed in the Chapter histories as KIA; the true nature of their fate eventually known only to the Librarians, if at all.
>>
>>51861815
Well, from the existing conflicting examples, they'll take on work at the Fortress Monastery, doing stuff even the Chapter Serfs couldn't do, assisting Apothecaries and Librarians, or training Scouts/giving advice to the younger in general.

GW Kill Team is pretty basic. It's 40k on a smaller scale, but it does suffer from the rules scaling for that. Otherwise, it lets you play small battles with Your Dudes from the main game with some big limiters on the most egregious of cheese lists.

Necromunda is build first and foremost as a skirmish game, so there's a lot of granularity at that scale for the individual model. Individual models develop and gain experience, almost like RPG character, and by writing in narrative you can craft individual stories for them.

For some more contemporary and supported versions of each game, look up Heralds of Ruin Kill Team and Inquisimunda (Inquisitor merged with Necromunda rules) as respective alternatives to GW Kill Team and Necromunda. Although >>51861772 is right in that few are willing to venture far from 40k proper.

I assume that they eventually disappear, and that might have its causes. Either there is actually a cap on a Marine's highly extended lifetime, or they seek out some way to end themselves honorably.

Ultimately a Marine's life is war, and to kill and die for the Emperor is their purpose. If a Marine can't fight he's got no more driving purpose to his life, and anything that comes afterwards would be torment as he goes and watches the new generations go out there to serve, they themselves stuck in the Monastery. It's why they give Dreadnoughts to damaged Marines, so they can continue to fight even when they have been blown limb from limb, and a valuable asset may continue to serve the Chapter.

But a Marine who can't fight properly at all would probably have the pity of the Chapter, and the Chapter itself is comprised of individuals who themselves are very well versed in honor, at least among their own. They'd probably be willing to let them seek death on their own terms as much for their honor as the Chapter's, since it would be a disgrace to keep a dying man from an honorable death.

Only example I have of this is a badly wounded White Scar knowing that he can survive his crippling injuries, but only if confined to a Dreadnought, something the Chapter Masters would demand because of the value of their Marines. You know how the White Scars feel about Dreadnoughts. His commanding officer instead killed him himself to save him from that fate.

>the plastic Sisters release has been in the works for longer than Infinity has been a game

You actually think it's been in the works? I'm pretty sure they have no one on the project and have made no progress.

With any luck, the Celestine release will have proven a good test case and they'll be looking to actually have someone start working on them.
>>
>>51862551
>You actually think it's been in the works?
No.

But I'm saying it's a line update that players have been waiting for since like 2000. Infinity has been around since what, 2006? 2005? There are some a lot minis in GW's line that are literally older than the game.

Doubtless there would be units with rules that have lacked models for similar lengths of time, only GW is determined to axe that problem ever since ChapterHouse, and Forge World wasn't as popular until semi-recently.
>>
>>51862547

They were sort of like supplements. They're a "different" form of army of the same army. Death Korps of Krieg Siege Regiment and Death Korps of Krieg Assault Brigade.

Same with the original Elysians and the new Elysian D-99.

>I really want an update since my local gw staff guy says that no flyers can deep strike as of 7ed rulebook and that combat drop rule and the deep strike rule all elysian/d-99 flyers have is non-existent now.

This isn't really a need for an update, at most FW can just FAQ it or email them ask if this is how it works, and either they will respond "we didn't update them for 7E yet and you should just treat it as if they can still do that" or they will say "with the changes made in 7E this army no longer has those rules but you can still play without them" which would suck but at least it's still playable.

Your local GW just has a typical shitty employee if he says the army is entirely unplayable. That is not the point of the game and kills the entire spirit of the hobby to disallow someone's entire army because of one tiny rule mix up due to GW changing shit.
>>
>>51862603

he allows me to use them but doesn't allow combat drop or the deep striking of flyers, which is d-99/elysian's entire thing and they're unplayable without it, a storm trooper force without hot shot weapons or carapace armour.

Asking on phone is pointless, the point of email is so you can print it out as proof. Try emailing them again, they almost always respond to rules questions, unless this is a case of "we don't want to upset GW".

Don't talk about your store in your email. Just ask them can D-99 still combat chute and deep strike flyers.

It's still in, they just nerfed it hardcore. Instead of double shots it's just one additional shot on all Assault weapons during a WAAAGH.

Dakkajets used to be good because they'd show up, you'd call a WAAAGH, and spit out 18 twin-linked Str 6 shots at BS3. It was glorious. Now you get 12 shots. It's just underwhelming. You'd be better off just taking more Lootas for the same price if you want Ap4 shooting.

Fuck you, it's fine. Could be you write it into supposed chapter history or you could just opt for it to be coincidence.

Or maybe have some sort of Minotaurs thing happen. Minotaurs were a Chapter before, died out, and suddenly came back during the 21st Founding with a completely different personality. Could be that, instead of being replaced because of shady things, they became their spiritual successors, possibly inheriting the name even without a chapter relation.

I kinda want to get this mentality out that replying to pasta is "dumb". It's not. It’s /tg/’s bread and butter. It's fair if we can reply to pasta if other boards bring memes or shitpost. If they bring reaction images or pepe, then yes that is pretty dank.

Also good discussions are shit. They're just expendable threads. Having a whole board oriented around them would be incredibly boring. If /tg/ discussions had the same love that /tv/ discussions get then that would be fine.

A "fun" thread to post in is something that tries to bring all the opinions of the board into the battle in a combined shit-flinging fashion. Not just spamming any one image macro. A good /tg/ posted would know that some well supported arguments are a cheaper and arguably better source of trolling than replying to pasta.

I'm so tired of hearing newfags complain about "muh shitposts or muh memes" They're there on the internet, they have a purpose, just like the containment boards.source then any of the chans. Just because you get butthurt at the pastamongers doesn't mean that the other /tg/ posters have to stop taking the bait. Quit bitching.

I just put some rather severe heat deformation on my contemptor's weapons. I wanna finish it up by this weekend, since he did fairly well against the Dark Angels last game, by killing Sammael and his entire bike squad.

He was definately the real MVP of my game last night, since he wiped out most of my opponent's bikes. The Rough Riders got all shot to death on turn 1, and FATMAN only got a charge off on turn 4, while he barely killed anything. This contemptor here is probably going to get named by this weekend, seeing as how he's been on a consistent awesomeness streak by earning back his points in every game.

On the other hand, I had an apothecary earn himself the callsign "Cyanide" when he forcefully ripped a mind-worm out of my chief librarian's skull in mid combat to save the dude's life.

A lot of Space Marines adopt camouflage, it just doesn't make the artwork a lot over their chapter colors because no one is going to understand who they are from the artwork.

Older artwork had multiple camouflage patterns for chapters given what campaign they were fighting, and even the Red Scorpions, a Chapter known for having Pride in Colors to a fault has adopted camouflage from time to time, but only by adhering strictly to an appropriate camouflage pattern detailed in the Codex Astartes.

Because camo is a Codex tactic you flaming faggot. Pride in Your Colors is an aberration. I don't expect your Ward hate meme-filled brain to understand, but the Codex actually advocates stealth and camouflage, as well as personal initiative and flexibility in times of war. Camo is only relatively rare for Marines because in 40k they are flaming fucktards obsessed with the color of paint on their armor, but above all because this is a game about fucking miniatures with recognizable paint schemes.

Yea, I just recently found out that the local 30k crowd has been using it's rather upsurd numbers to bully other people over the game rules. I had to have a heated discussion with a friend of mine that YES, wounds incurred by a leviathan do spread to other models(the game works on a WOUND POOL, and wounds don't magically vanish unless it's explicitly stated they don't spread).

And that certain rules from special characters apply to the entire unit... Like a vigilator with stealth gives stealth to the unit he's attached to. But apparently 90% of the local 30k crowd literally hasn't read the core rulebook since 5th edition. And they seem to operate on the belief that they're automatically right because they have more people who think the same retarded way.

I was about to start a 30k army too. Now I kinda got put off of it because of how retarded the crowd is.

I don't normally play with retards, I have a small group of good friends that I play with all the time. One of my friends had the tendrils of the 30k group try to dig their retardedness into his skull.

So mid-game he suddenly started chimping out when I started rolling up severing cut after killing some termies. And he explained what APPARENTLY 10 or so people came out and told him this weird argument. After I opened the core rulebook to explain otherwise, he kinda sulked and spent the entire rest of the day being super hostile.

>>51863459
Well, the Leviathan's got 6 shots, and 5 hits from BS5. If you're not a gibbering retard, you've given the leviathan a Dreadnought Drop Pod.

The Leviathan has S9 AP1, which with +2d6 strength against RA12, the bell curve then shows that you have a 97.22% chance of AT LEAST GLANCING. With a 91.22% chance of penning.

This results in a total of 4.561 pens, of which at least one of those is an Explodes result.. Doing an additional 1.5 hull points, and killing the knight outright.1

Now that mere threat of instakilling a knight means it MUST turn it's shield around to face the leviathan, and thus will only take 3-4 hull points of damage. At which point it's now at the mercy of the entire rest of your army.
>>
Are Lascanons on Havoks still not worth it if they have Stealth? I feel like they would be nice to have as a compliment to the standard AC squad.
>>
>>51863526
>he forgot about the ion shield
You're right, it is a huge threat, which is exactly why the Knight player is going to tilt his shield to face it. Half of your pens are removed, dealing between 2 and about 4 HP of damage unless you get luckier than average with explodes results.

I can't say I'm surprised.
>>
>>51863318

>>
>>51863552

>>
>>51863544
At least the Leviathan is now an enormous enough threat to cause the knight to shift it's shield from the ~entirety~ of your army, in order to face a lone model.
>>
>>51863559
Sure, but claiming it will gib a Knight in one round of shooting is a misleading claim. Most would-be Knight killers test their mettle against the Knight assuming its shield will face them, since they are the primary threat. If you can only wreck it if it doesn't get its save, the Knight player is going to ensure it always will.
>>
>>51863543
Maybe if you really needed the anti-tank. I feel like it would still be better in Iron Warriors though.

If you already have the autocannon havocs, you could try proxying them as lascannons in a few games and see how you like it. Maybe go for just 2 lascannons instead of a full squad of 4? Not sure.

Total best:
Points to dakka:
Superheavy:
FMC:
Transport:
my guess for points to dakka is the new barracuda, though the vulture seems pretty good.

"Because fuck you." - Games Workshop
>>
>>51864064

GW in 6th edition started a process by which codex options were seriously reduced, unique rules were replaced by generic ones, and codices tended towards "copy-paste" operations whereby rules didn't significantly change. It was rumoured that this was fueled by an attitude from upper management that players pirated codices anyway, so it was pointless investing much time and money into them. This continued through into early 7th edition.

Then came 7th edition Necrons where GW decided to throw that approach right out the window. Suddenly codices were brimming with new special rules and options, unique units and detachments that totally changed the way armies could operate.

Sadly that left a few armies who didn't get an update after this new system came along rather lackluster.
>>
>>51864064
I miss those days. I always had a big retinue in a Land Raider. So fun.

Right now they are still awesome, so I don't know what you're on about. You have tons of modeling opportunities and options to make a really powerful unit. Right now I run an Inquisitor with Rad nades, 9 DCA, 2 Priests, an Astropath and 3 Acolytes with 3 Flamers in a Land Raider Crusader. I know the warband says only 1 Priest, but I have another Priest attach to it. That way I can re-roll wounds and re-roll invuln saves. Expensive and fun! Just like it was in 3rd.

I'm pretty sure you can only use the traitor legion rules if you use the specific formations set in the book. So no, an unbound army can't use them.

>>51864799
Book mentions only legion-specific formations and decurions, as long as your forces adhere to the restrictions you're good to go.

All the benefits come from the detachment itself, it's not like legion/chapter tactics where it's just something you declare your force is using. You may as well argue you get the benefits of a CAD by staying within the restrictions of a CAD while making an unbound force.

Where does it say any detachment. It just says that the detachment can be included in any battleforged army. Meanwhile under the detachment it says specifically it must included the formations listed in the book. The Alpha Legion detachment that gives the benefits IS THE DECURION-STYLE. You can't just take a CAD and give it the benefits, because, again, the thing providing the is literally the decurion-style detachment.

Pretty much. I think though there's another factor with Orks; they just don't have a rules writer who actually likes them on the team. Orks have had a supplement update and a new model (the Wazbom flyer) since the policy changed, and they're both atrocious. The supplement "update" was simply copy-pasted formations that already existed being crammed into hands-down the worst decurion-detachment in the game. As for the Wazbom, it's overwhelming in its mediocrity. it could have had some amazing, fluffy, unique rules (the Mek flying the thing has his brain hard-wired into it for fuck's sake) and does it get anything? Nope, just a shitty Death from the Skies ability that no-one is ever going to use. Then there's the weapons.

>Hey, it's got two Kustom Mega Kannons on the wings
>You mean the one Grots can shoot for 30 points?
>Yeah. Should we put two of them on this incredibly fragile flying chassis?
>Fuck no, just twin-link it. They'll love it.
>Ok, what about the mega-tellyporta. Need something different to match that "mega" in the name
>Twin. Link. It. C'mon, let's get lunch.

The rules read exactly like someone bored and not remotely interested in the faction was told to write them to a deadline, so they churned out something quite because they really don't care. That's why i really have no hope for an 8th edition of Orks; until someone on the team comes along who is actually interested in the faction, Orks will continue to be shit.

I would probably make them act a bit like the Cadre Fireblade, since they're not a real warlord but a supporting role, one the Magi conclave is directly peering through. Heck, even steal the Tau rule of able to link multiple squads shooting on a target for BS gain (I remember a story in the Painting Skitarii book of the magi concluding if a Chaos warlord is slain the warband will fall apart; in one motion a thousand rifles turn and apply all their firepower to the warlord).

I'd also love it if we could get a build-a-magos workshop for CultMech, able to pick and choose a number of options to bundle together with different abilities. Like maybe you buy a "chassis" which has the basic statline, then you add weapons/wargear/special rules, letting the magos be as cheap or expensive as you like.

There's something similar in the Heresy stuff, the Magi and the Secutarii Axiarch, the Magi have a table of specialties they can pick from and pay points, there's a fortfication one, a vehicle one, a shooty one, a choppy one ect, and they've got a shit ton of upgrades. My main Archmagos is 355 points, and throws out stupid buffs from his T6 W4 2+/3++ IWND body, supported with a few regular dudes who are 75 and do much less. Same unit entry.

The Axiarch is basically a Marine with BS5 and W3, plus FnP. He can pick from any of the Skittles stuff, and grants all Secutarii in the army a choice from FnP 5+, Preferred Enemy: Infantry, Move Through Cover and =1 to Vehicle Damage Table. He's 60pts base.
Not as OP as it might look since the Secutarii are limited by only one CAD and can't be compulsory troops unless there's a Titan around. He'd have to be priced a bit higher in 40k since you can and will spam Skitarii.
