Why SoS is the way it is
Rules for the upcoming Tournament and a few character submissions!

The KS link & Opaque's website
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2006613790/song-of-swords-tabletop-roleplaying-game
http://www.songofswords.net/

Song of Swords is a a tabletop RPG centered around realistic medieval fightan' with a ludicrous variety of weapons and fighting styles, centered around a dice pool system. It's currently in beta, and can be used for both fantasy and historical games. Kickstarter is happening NOW we are kicking ass baby!

Call of the Void: Ballad of the Laser Whales is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Its combat system is more modern, based in the early 20th century, but can probably handle combat up to the present day.

MEGA folder containing current version of the game and all supplementary materials.
Note that the latest version of the game is v1.9.9 but with additional supplements. It's NOT what's currently on Opaque's website, because Jimmy is Jimmy.

Here's a wiki detailing SoS's fantasy setting, getting filled up bit by bit as Jimmy reveals more details:

>There's also a roll20 room where new players are encouraged to try the rules, test new rules, and find game breaking issues: https://app.roll20.net/join/346755/hRKd4w
>The room might be empty, but the people who teach the game still browse the thread frequently. If you're looking to learn, post here in the thread. We also play Guy Windsor's card game Audatia in the room.

Submitting my tournament character for lore review before I build him.

An Orredin nobleman who, long ago, was a high up in the Imperial army. He commanded, led, advised the Emperor, and was generally a pretty fucking big deal. However, following his retirement, he spent literally centuries throwing debauched orgies and absurd tournaments. By the time he was approached with a request to back a coup against the Emperor, he had forgotten most of the things that had made him valuable to the Empire in the first place. When the coup failed he was shoved off in a pointless position that would never support his way of life. Now (relatively) impoverished and having forgotten most of the things he made his fortune with in the first place, he has done the unthinkable and left Helion to remake his fortune. As it turns out, this involves hand to hand combat in the arena. Oh, well. He fought once, he can fight again.

>someone is trying to argue that maille armor wasn't widely used in europe and is just a meme
Someone give me sources, I need to bludgeon this person.
>>
>>51830066
It's okay. Today, because of For Honor, I had people try to tell me that A) katanas could cut through late-medieval plate B) katanas weren't made of steel, but they couldn't tell me what they were made of, and c) plate was super heavy and made you slow.

Literally any medieval illustration. Is this somewhere on /tg/, or a retarded person you know from elsewhere?

Can you point to a museum as your source?
>>
>>51830103
It's all true though
Katanas are the greatest weapon ever made
You can even cut through T-72s with a katana. That's why the USSR didn't invade Japan after WW2
>>
>>51830103
They probably also think that samurai armor was made of wood.
>>
>>51830359
Given that katanas could cut through steel plate, why wouldn't they armor themselves in wood? Arrows get stuck in trees and it's not going to stop a katana anyway
this is bait

>if I compare myself to failures and idiots, I feel good
You are better than them. Your product is better, your design is better, and your marketbase is better. The only thing holding you back is marketing, and many of the other ones you're looking at probably sucked there even worse. Comparing yourself to them is like comparing your house to a homeless man. Sure, it puts things in perspective, but it's only one half of the perspective. Also compare your house to the Sun King, and realize that in fact the successes and failures of others are so broad as to be functionally irrelevant to your own situation. Then, armed with that knowledge, set high goals for yourself and strive to attain them. If you have reached your goals, they were not high enough and you need new ones. If you fail to reach your goals, then you have at least drawn closer to them than if you hadn't tried.

tl;dr: Make some more promotional threads on various forums. Good ones, ideally, ones situated to receive plenty of traffic. Hell, at least get a form intro for things like http://www.therpgsite.com/showthread.php?35499-KICKSTARTER-The-RPGsite-Thread-for-Information-About-Kickstarter-Projects

Speaking of this, how is the RPG.net Q&A, or whatever you have planned, going to go down? You're going to have to go there some time.

And any news on the Adventure? How much it will cost, what it might entail, when you're going to talk about it, anything?

2) Kal Desar, Karthacki Footsman
3) Zeyaad Sulakir, Kedouin Raider Captain
4) Rosalie Azevedo, Pretty Knave
5) German Longsword Jobber, Jobber

If you've submitted one and I haven't seen it, post it again!
If you're still working on your character, keep at it, and submit it when you're done!

Remember that your characters should be actual characters, and certainly need to have their Arcs filled out.
Your Saga Arc can be as simple as "Win the tournament."

Right now this place and Reddit are our big sellers, and while a lot of the people posting on plebbit are our people, a very significant number of people seem to back us from there, suggesting that they don't post, but they do read what we post, and then decide we're worth funding.

I think this is going to be a repeating thing, people don't know what questions to ask and they don't know how to start broaching the subject of the game, but if they see/hear things they like, they might want it anyway. Reddit has hueg potential.
>>
Ah, my oldest gripe with SoS:
Wanting to make a balanced suite of skills, but the Skills-per-PCP ratio being the rankest of ass.

Frankly, guys, if you fixed skills at chargen, you wouldn't need to have buffed CHA's determination.
>>
>>51831897
Here and reddit are given, though, since they're the only sites we've had high-profile threads on. What about the other ones?
>>
I have this idea of doing a roll20 game where it's a fecht like

All the players are playing 1 character that's carted around with a track of choices like the old John Galt fecht threads.

Something to celebrate the recent luck with the KS.

I was thinking of making it a weekly thing, hosted on several dates and times to accommodate multiple parties. The games would range from a wide host of different time periods, genres, and subject matter with diverse character pools to chose from.

NOT IN THE RULES
REEEEEEEEE
>>
>>51831968
Skill packets are a dumb notion anyways. They need to be replaced with something better, but removing them isn't a bad thing in itself.
>>
>>51831968
They didn't address the core problem adequately for as much as they bloated the rules.
They encouraged diverse skill acquisitions, sure, but at the end of the day no character came out of the box more than merely competent in anything.
>>
>>51831989
Fuck off. Making a character who isn't completely incompetent is impossible without them as it is. They're back in Ballad, they were admitted to only be left out of 1.9.9 as an editing mistake, and Jimmy himself suggested the 5 for 3 system. They're part of the rules.
>>
>>51832028
Unless the tournament master says so, it's kind of a moot point, mate.
>>
>>51832039
Not that the tournament will use them for anything.
>>
>>51832026
There was a time when people received extra Skill points from Intelligence. I still use that rule in my own games, on top of Packets. That helps some, but it's only a bandaid on skills being so hard to come by.
>>
>>51832068
Pretty sure that's still in there.
>>
>>51832074
Holy fuck it is. It should be listed along with the Intelligence stat as well, not just way down in Skills.

>>>51824317
>>
Shouldn't skills be a function of age? I mean, that's basically how it is in real life, intelligence can impact it a bit but the normal human variation in skills due to intelligence is much smaller than the variation in skills due to age.
>>
>>51832117
But also quality of training, access to education, and personal motivation.
Which is why it's just a general category in chargen.

>>51831421
You are probably busy with video stuff and shit, but can you answer the king and firearm question on lelddit and rpgnet?
>>
>>51832135
>quality of training,
True, that goes along with intelligence as a modifier on, essentially, the speed of acquisition. That too, I would say, is comparatively minor.

>access to education, and personal motivation.
Those have more to do with which skills than with the quantity or magnitude of the skills. People spend their lives learning stuff, and generally stuff that's relevant to their lives.

>>51832147
>implying otherwise
Have you ever met an old man who fucked around all his life? Fucking around is actually way more conducive to quantity of skills than just getting one job, one routine, and sticking with it. But even old people who've lived like that acquire skills from their daily and personal life, from hobbies, from all sorts of things, not to speak of the extreme expertise that arises in profession-relevant skills.
>>
>>51832166
I'm trying on the rpg.net, but it's doing something weird where it isn't recognizing my space bar hits. wtf is with this site?
>>
>>51832212
Are you sure it's not just your keyboard?
>>
>>51832207
Age is a way more fucky PCP category than simple skills indicating quality of education and personal training. You are right, in that older people would have more experience doing a variety of shit, but older and more experienced people would have more PCP anyway.
>>
>>51832212
Alt+32 should do it.
>>
>>51832207
Alright, I'll put it this way
>40 year old mailman who has been living a rather dull middle class life and pursued no greater endeavor, being largely content to consume media in his spare time
>knows how to drive, how to cook, and talk to people and is comfortably furnished

>25 year old doctoral student who practices HEMA in his spare time and has gone on several internation trips during his breaks
>has a significant complement of skills, fighting proficiency, several boons, but is also under a mountain of debt

Imagine a dozen other such anecdotes.
Argue against or for the Int bonus, sure, but trying to tabulate age is plainly infeasible. It's the experience that matters, and yes, generally older people will have more, but that doesn't matter as much for character creation.
>>
>>51832207
Most old people don't know shit because most people don't have the dedication to truly learn skills to a great extent.

You don't know what you're talking about and should hang yourself before your stupidity affects others.

see >>51832271
>>
>>51832271
>how to cook, and talk to people
These are actually pretty big deals.

Also, my mailman knows how to build canoes from scratch, and he fits your description. Just because people don't rail off a laundry list of their eccentricities at the drop of a hat doesn't mean they're not remarkable.

>25 year old doctoral student who practices HEMA in his spare time and has gone on several internation trips during his breaks
His skills are
1. Pretty good in the theory of one discipline, will get better and gain practical skill over time.
2. Dabbling skills, more than a layman but not enough to be useful, in several "elective" disciplines
3. Fights passing well in a dead discipline
4. Really fucking good at writing essays, probably.
5. Knows how to use trains, planes, and/or automobiles

I feel like you probably could have stacked the deck even more, but the fact is that 25 year old will eventually get older, he'll get a job doing things people see every day, and he'll eventually learn enough shit that something like HEMA or taking a dew vacations will no longer even cross his mind as something that constitutes a skill.

>>51833041
Thanks.
>>
>>51835143
No. The standard PCP costs are what kind of social standing AND wealth you start with. A standard freeman will cost 4 PCP and give you freemen benefits and wealth.

If you wanted to be, for instance, a peasant that somehow found a metric ton of gold (100 gp, same as a minor noble), you add the PCP costs for each, then divide by two, rounding up. (Peasant is 2, Minor Noble is 6, you pay 4 PCP to roll with what you came up with)

Although of course, those abnormal situations will require GM approval

If you have both, and are at LL range and the enemy makes a S range attack at you, they would have to pay 11d ((5+5)+1) in range, before allocating any dice at all. Slowpoke adds after the final calculation, while SPS is used during.

"When Maneuvers in a Bout resolve, all Maneuvers made with Initiative resolve in the reverse
order that they were declared"
I'm new to this, what the hell is this?
>>
>>51835701
No, note that "total" isn't capitalized. That means the word isn't part of the term "range cost" it's just an adjective being used for clarification purposes.
>>
>>51836349
That's more of when there's more than two people in a bout. Lets say A and B are in the same side ganging up on C.

A and B go Red, and C goes defensive, and thus, both hold initiative over him.

You usually declare maneuvers with initiative starting by those with less ADR. This means that the one with higher ADR can predict what the others will do, and act upon it.

So, B has less ADR than A, so he declares a 7d thrust on C's neck. A, now aware of what his buddy is doing, declares a 5d Downwards Head Swing. Doesn't matter what C will do.

Here we come upon what you're quoting. We resolve maneuvers in the reverse order in which they were declared, that is to say, that the fighters with high ADR act first. So, A actually strikes the first blow instead of B.

There's enough data points to generate a proper projection now. We're looking at a low-ball of $50k assuming a typical amount of groundswell. I don't think we actually have a typical amount of groundswell though, I think we had a lot of front-load from existing fans. Barring some big media coverage, far in excess of what we've seen so far, my math puts us at only like $45k, we'd be lucky to hit the projection's lower bound. The $95k isn't going to happen without Jimmy and friends making some major pushes way beyond their current efforts anywhere but here and reddit.
>>
>>51838896
Although it's more accurate than the trend, I still wouldn't put much stock in the projection until about halfway through.

Sorry reposting. My autocorrect ran havoc on that original.

But yeah, claymore took the day off work to follow up with blogs. We would need some prominent featuring from Kickstarter or coverage on bigger sites like gnomestew, geek nation, etc. I have numbers for how many click throughs we get from any given website. We'd need to get somewhere big to reflect anything like that trendline.

That being said we want to get this video for combat out before we push too hard. But by the end of the week/Monday I expect we'll have made hard pushes on the important sites. Will make sure it's communicated when we do.

Got another question for the devs

Is the cost for a first level proficiency 1, or 2?

>Buying into a School in order to gain its benefits is easy. The base cost in Arc of a School is listed in

>level 1 as part of the School. Each Proficiency added to a School must be paid for normally, though

Schools, last time I looked were worded poorly. Let's go from memory and hope they haven't pulled a sly one on me in my absence. That 1 there is the cost you pay to get any proficiency in the school at rank 1 and is payed for each proficiency. Noble iirc was [3]+1 per Primary. So taking Noble School - 1h Sword at rank 1 would cost 3+1+1. 3 for the school, +1 for the 1h Sword primary and 1 for 1h Sword at level 1 the number you circled in red.

Adding another primary, say Polearm, would increase the cost to 3+2+1+1. 3 for the school, 2 for two primaries and then 1 and 1 for the two proficiencies at level 1.

However, now it becomes much easier to level up. Instead of raising each proficiency to level 2, you raise the school itself to level 2. This only costs 1 the number under your red circle and schools continue levelling in this manner, regardless of how many proficiencies are inside the school itself.
>>
>>51842310
Thanks but that didn't answer my question. The table says purchasing a proficiency at level 1 costs 1 point, but the paragraph says it costs 2.

Okay, the actual real answer is that it's 1 for everybody except humans who pay 0 for the first level of proficiency when it's in a school. Outside of a school it would however cost 1 for a human due to the human effect of Willing to Learn.

I looked at old versions. Back in v1.9.3 the top table cost 2, but it had the exact same paragraph you see here >>51842204
But from v1.9.4 onwards, its cost is 1, and the paragraph is unchanged

1.9.4 came out in late 2014. This mistake has been in the rules for more than two years.

Esoteric school - 2 points
Level 9 - 14 pts (levels 2 to 9)
one primary - 2 pts
two secondaries - 2 pts
You're not a human - 3 pts (level 1 for each profs)
= 23

That'd require 9 PCP, and you can only have 8 max per category.

The way I read it, and the way we'll be running it, is that you cannot use Custom Grip to add two instances of the same thing. You can add Tight Grip, you can add Draw, you can add both, but you can't add Tight Grip 2 or Draw 2.

Otherwise, everyone would grab Tight Grip 2.
>>
>>51843122

Some weapons inherently have Draw, or already have Tight Grip. It's referring to upgrading those existing values. For instance, upgrading a Katana from Draw 4 to Draw 5.

You'll have to deal with the mere mortal magics in which you transmute blood into black ichor as it courses through the enemies veins, creating ever newer and more abberoneous forms of life all of which cry to god for salvation or harnessing an equally malignant and repugnant force to animate the peaceful dead and force them to wander damned and lustful consuming all life in their wake.

The Lendians are not famed for their mercenaries--most of their fighting men find easy enough employment in the hosts of their nobles and military men, but bands do exist. One group, perhaps the most fearsome, are called the "Feathercaps" because of their custom of wearing hawk feathers in their fur hats, even to the point of modeling steel feathers on their helmets. This unit, which elects its leader on a yearly basis, fights as exquisite light horse, and are known for their ability to navigate even dense forests without dismounting--a talent which has frustrated many enemies who thought themselves protected from cavalry attack by the woods. Their favored weapon is the saber, though many also enjoy the use of light lances, and bows and pistols are used in equal measure according to the aptitude of the individual men.

Lendians speak Lendski, Lendish, or Lendian, depending on who you ask, and their style of dress is rather plain, eschewing combinations of colors and shapes for flat, monochrome dress with most adornment being in the form of buttons. Osterbijan and the Lendian men share a custom of wearing a sash across the breast from shoulder to hip, often of silk but sometimes of dyed wool for poorer folk. The Lendians by tradition wear this sash red, while the Osterbs wear blue. The Valaks have a similar tradition, though they wear their (yellow) sashes around their waists. The origin of the tradition is unclear, but a common myth is that in ancient times, the Valaks, Osterbs and Lendians were all one tribe, and when forced to split and go their second ways, they drew sashes from a great barrel to determine who would go in what direction. Some stories at the ancestors of the Ruscovites to this story (their color was green) and supposes that the four groups went East (Osterbs) West (Lendians) South (Valaks) and North (Ruscovites)

So no trap maids? Okay. It's a shame I cannot bribe Bones to draw me a trap and have it be turned into a canon Song of Swords character. Or that you're too uncomfortable doing it but could be pushed.

What about....a pic of an icequeen Silver Guardswoman? Or a haughty-looking Orredin female wearing some leather armor/riding gear?

Or maybe this is too much, but what about a guy besides a Mymridom mech? Said guy would be the pilot of it.

Maybe some kind of ranger tasked with keeping the Schwarzvalds in check when they're near or inside productive provinces.

Or a prettyboy (not a trap) Kaselreich noble of some sort who wants to lead his disgraced noble house to greatness. Think Reinhard from Legends of Galactic Heroes. Characterization wise, the cunning of Tywin Lannister from ASOIAF but more charismatic/less likely to act dickish enough he'd get shot while taking a shit.

What I mean by fair play, is that he's willing to handicap himself in the interest of a good contest. Oh right.
So Toss is ridiculously overpowered. We've had threads in the past about how crazy it is. So is Disarm (Defense), and the Slowpoke talent.

Unless someone comes up with a better idea, Toss will not inflict damage; Disarm (Defense) will be RS = BS instead of RS = BS+2; and Slowpoke will only work when you are outside of your enemy's shortest applicable weapon reach. (Example: You dual wield an EL-reach spear and a M-reach short spear. Slowpoke applies when your enemy is M- or further away. It doesn't apply once they get inside your reach.)

>>
>>51847634
That said, this system would be perfect if you just want the ultra-grim, nightmare fuel-soaked, cosmic horrorfest tone and atmosphere of Drakengard without the "one guy literally kills entire armies by himself" shit.
>>

Depends on what you want out of Drakengard.

Could you do retarded anime fights with yelling transvestites against a Mute Serial Killer and his Reptilian Shapeshifting girlfriend, and his posse of weird children and child molestors?

Of course.

Are you really going to stand there and roll 50 or so cleaving blows to simulate Caim's tuesday afternoon?

Probably not.

After an unimpressive day numerically, the auto-calculated lower bound has dropped below $40k. Current trend, excluding the first two days, still puts us at a pretty substantial $45k, but that's assuming that the boys at Opaque can market well enough to counteract the waning that we might expect would result from the last of our local dilly-dalliers and prepaid payers from finally getting their pledges in – and that they can do so for the entire 25 days that remain. That's not very likely. It also assumes that Opaque won't make a breakthrough and get some huge media coverage. That's not super likely either, but it remains possible.

"Dwarven religion is essentially an unspoken secret within Dwarven community. They very vehemently deny the deific status of the various gods, considering Genosus, Bocanadessia, and The Seven to be essentially glorified spirits.

However, they never speak of the god they believe does exist. This is because they all know, without having to be told, that The King is real."

Slowpoke still works like normal if you are only wielding one spear though, right?
>>

Oh, and a trend logarithm , which is probably more realistic, puts us at just over $25k. That remains the case whether I use the full dataset or exclude the first two, which is a decent indicator that it's probably pretty spot-on. This data is including the reddit bump, so it wouldn't account for a scenario where Jimmy et al stopped marketing entirely (or just started failing at it terribly) but it should include marketing at about their current level. It also doesn't account for variations in time-of-week, but we've covered enough parts of the week that that's probably smoothed out anyway – doesn't take much for variation that's cyclical. Finally, this is not accounting for the possibility of a huge media exposure, which would, essentially, stick another new log equation on top of this one.

The equation, if anyone cares, is f(x) = $4925.63 • ln(x) + 8699.45 where x is the number of days since the kickstarter began. R-squared is 0.9946, indicating that this equation fits the data extremely well. And you would be able to see as much simply by looking, were 4chan working properly.

Slowpoke works as long as your opponent is outside the reach of an equipped polearm or spear you are wielding.
>>
>>51847978
No. The way Slowpoke is written is too strong and doesn't make much sense. Instead, it will only work for when you are outside the range of the fighter with Slowpoke. Once you're inside their range, Slowpoke will stop applying.

Without this houserule, you have the following situation:
The enemy wields a pike. You manage to hit with your sword and are now at Medium range, well within the enemy's reach. Now you decide to kick him, which is a Short range attack. You have to pay an additional die for range to move from Medium to Short. Supposedly this represents the difficulty of "getting past the range of a spear." But you already got past it! Slowpoke shouldn't affect this situation.
