I swear I see this guy every other campaign, be it as a PC bard or a background NPC on a virtual tabletop. People just google "bard" and pick this smug asshole every time.

"adventurers" are quintessentially bums and as we know most bums that go around killing everything in sight generally don't get to do much "adventuring" before they're murdered or locked in prison.

Camping on the streets and playing some tunes while occasionally tagging along with some wacky types is the closest you'll ever get to IRL adventuring. (just watch the junkies)

I dislike the fact that a bard is a thing when you can easily have any other archetype be musically inclined if you so felt the need to have it.

I mean, in my mind Gurney Hallack is a Rogue who also knows how to sing and knows how to lay on the charm in spite of looking like a scratching post for a tiger.

This is your problem. Don't get me wrong, applause for going a good route and having them be the guy who dabbles between magic sources, but Bards can do their own shtick just fine without music. I had a party member once whos Bard was a dancer, empowering us with dervish dance rather than song. If music is your problem, there are other options. I'm still trying to figure out how I'd do a Bob Ross Bard justice.

I'd be very interested in a cook bard, personally. That might be stretching it a little towards, I don't know, some sort of alchemist? But mostly, I want to be able to inspire my friends with very cool soup.
