There's an entire dungeon and Final Fantasy 4 designed to make you eat shit if you don't have the Float spell.

As the what OP is suggesting I wouldn't have a problem with it so long as it doesn't do anything retarded like saying a fireball can't set things on fire. Could be pretty interesting if you had a reason why magic apparently only wants to hurt things.

I'm not sure what he's talking about, honestly. Damage dealing is pretty much Black Magic's thing, and while Red, Blue, and White magic (sometimes) can deal damage it's not usually their primary thing.

Red isn't really a type of magic. Being a Red Mage just means you can use Black and White magic at the same time.

I think it's more "this stuff can only be used in battle", but even then FF4 had them clearing obstacles and patching one another up with magic in cutscenes.

Lets not even get into what sorceresses in FF8 could get up to, pulling out fairy tale witch bullshit while everyone else was stunk using the normal spells the party always gets in a Final Fantasy game.

Turning casters into squishy artillery makes for a pretty fucking boring magic system.

But if you just meant 'the only combat application of magic is damage' well... also sounds pretty lame mechanically and thematically. Does it just turn most fights into 'protect wizard while they nuke?' Or does it end up becoming the new 'I hit it with my fireball' instead of 'sword,'
