Newfag approach - read the articles on DailyMTG and moan about how terrible they are.
Newfag that wants to pretend to be an oldfag for credibility approach - read the articles on DailyMTG, then read a couple MTGSalvation articles about the older characters like Urza or Gerrard, then moan about how terrible the lore is nowadays and how much better things used to be back when you played.
Oldfag approach - actually read the older material along with the new and realize that it's all garbage and has always been garbage with the exception of three or four books.

Pick up the old novels and read them. The weathering HT crew was interesting, as was Urza.

Eventually they stopped doing the novels of course, and the quality has gone downhill post mending.

Just read Uncharted Realms. Especially those on Tarkir (Abzan 4ever <3)
