Are Dwarves Scottish
>>51788847
Aye, sometimes laddie.
Bump
>>51788847
No...but it's fun and gratifying to act like they are.
Like how all pirates have that very specific English accent; it's part of the fun.
>>51788847
No, russian
>>51788847
I'm curious where the meme of the scottish brogued Dwarf came from
It certainly didn't start with the LOTR films.
>>51789453
Baldur's Gate game series
scottish vikings, because americans don't actually know what scandinavians sound like
How's Egyptian?
Dwarves are German: master-level craftsmanship, immaculate work ethic, love of beer, strict society, women, tendency to destroy the world with lava...
>>51789722
Oh this is great
>Great Dwarpharoah, let my people go!
>No, Gnomoses, it's your duty is to build the pyramid with us! It will be the biggest thing ever built, that's going to be awesome!
>>51789181
>all pirates have that very specific English accent
> Cornish accent, due to the portrayal of Long John Silver in Disney's Treasure Island. The actor was from there, and used his native accent
> It's historically accurate. Blackbeard was cornish.
> Pirates can also be scottish. See also: Alestorm.

Warcraft II had them as Scottish and came out years before BG. And I doubt that was the root of it, either.
TSR had a comic in the 1980s called The Sword of Alabron, and that had a Scottish dwarf.
>>51788847
They always seemed more Slavic than anything to me.
>Short vulgar mountain dwelling bearded drunkards who usually have dangerous self-destructive tendencies
>Live in socialist closed city states where every single one of them is expandable >Surrounded by machinery that is simultaneously expertly made yet always falling apart due to being centuries old and made out of cheap parts
>Only one poorly labeled lever away from annihilating the world outside
>>51790868
So your knowledge of Eastern Europe is through American stereotypes?
Canonically Jews. Just see what JRRT said on the subject.
>>51791390
No setting actually does that though
>>51792035
That's because game designers design retarded, boring and even cowardly settings.
Not that it's really my problem, getting a setting togethere is one of the best things in RPGS.
>>51789821
>Then the Sea Elves came and fucked everything up.
>>51790145
Any clasical fantasy piracy tabletops? Dwarven steamships getting raided by Human made Galleons filled with Orc Slavers.
>>51791308
No, my knowledge of Eastern Europe is through American video games.Fuck Kate, Revenge > Deal
>>51792408
Deal thematically makes better sense in my opinion
>>51790145
Blackbeard was from Bristol and Robert Newton was from Dorset, you fool. Cornwall was never involved.
>>51792143
I read that in Katara's voice, then I got it.
>>51792446
Fuck him, he's already tried to kill me once.
>>51792453
Why were so many pirates from England
>>51792446
Possibly with Dimitri as the final boss & Roman dying leaving a greater impact. It's not like you have much incentive to date Kate, she doesn't give you discounts, remove wanted stars or even let you have some hot coffee. Even Michelle can be fucked.
>>51792383
Man o' War/Dreadfleet
Your Dwarves can be as scottish as you want them OP. Don't let no one tell you otherwise.
>>51792497
It was the single largest naval power on Earth, and most pirates were out-of-work former sailors.
>>51792497
It was the time their navy was getting an edge. Still, there are tons of french, spanish, dutch, whatever pirates al well.
>funnily enough best pirate ever was probably a chinese woman
>>51792497
>Why were so many pirates from England
How do you not know this?
>>51792446
Bros over hoes. Just look at what happened to pic related. He broke up with Ashley before GTA IV started, severing ties after TLAD & then Rockstar magiced them back together for GTA V which got him killed. It wasn't his bros who got him killed, it was a hoe.
The scottish accent for dwarves may have come from Lord of the Rings. No, not the actual books. The early radio and film adaptations. You need an accent different from the main characters, and a Scot is easiest to get when you are in England.
>>51789722
>tfw Egyptians thought Dwarves were holy beings
>tfw Egyptians had two gods who were Dwarves
>tfw there's almost no Egyptian fantasy dwarves
Feels Bes man.
I read once they're based off Yorkshiremen.
Dwarves are Scottish
Gnomes are Irish
Halflings are Welsh
Elves are.. German?
>>51788847
You could have Malaysian dwarves if you felt like it. You could have dwarves that didn't well correlate to any earthly culture.
>>51792787
Eleven language was based of Finnish and Welsh
>>51792711
>short
>belligerent
>often drunk
seems about right
>>51789778
Having women in society is distinctly german?
>>51792787
elves are bretonic
humans are anglo-saxon
>>51789337
I played a dwarf as a Russian gangster, had a lot of fun
>>51793073
I just realized this means the Spurdoes of fantasy are elves.
>>51793231
>Russian Gangster
Looking at the rest of this thread, I'm suddenly curious if the GTA Russian Mafiya is still existent.
>>51793202
>elves are bretonic
Did the TW WH Bretonnia update come out yet?
>>51788847
They're Yorkshiremen.
>>51793399
not those Bretons, the Celtic people of France are who i mean.
What about beach dwarves
Dwarves are Rumpelstiltskin.
>>51792787
while the concept of Dwarves in mythology came from SCANDINAVIA, Tolkien made their private language based off of Hebrew.
I just like to think dwarves are a race made up entirely of hairy, drunken tradies. No matter what background.
>>51788847
You seplt Squattish rong anon
>>51792606
He was a douchebag who didn't know when to fold 'em. Everyone turned on him but a few people, and he just burned the clubhouse rather than accept that times were changing.
He got what he deserved.
Sport bikes > cruisers any day, though.
>>51788847
Maybe.
I use basque dwarves in my setting because they have a funny language.
>>51802623
By 'funny language' you mean 'sexy underwear', right?
>>51802834
Not really, I always imagined dwarves as a "going commando" kind of people
accent is pretty much the only trait, and that is mostly because for Americans, a scottish accent sounds archaic and barbaric and so it persists in films.
>>51788847
I read somewhere about a book series where Dwarves have mustaches made of mushrooms and have ant antennae to see. Those weren't Scottish I don't think.
Anyone know the name of that book, or if I'm just making this all up?
>>51790868
Sounds more like Bavaria.
>>51801160
>he just burned the clubhouse rather than accept that times were changing
I thought that was symbolizing that the times have changed & that the past is gone. He burns down the clubhouse to put it out of its misery. Johnny's probably the Lost member with the most sense besides Jim & Angus as he focuses more on illegal businesses than destruction.
>>51803639
Anyone?
>>51803639
Your thinking of Artemis Fowl.
>>51810506
Thanks anon! I thought it started with an A, but I kept thinking it was called Alex something.
