I like the idea that some weird quirk of kobold brains allows them to make purely communistic societies that actually work instead of breaking down in murder and chaos.

Here's a better question, who draws the best kobolds?

Some people draw them short and thick, other people draw them thin and wiry, some people give them long horns, some short, some give their mouths a sort of draconic V thing in the front, some people give them a squared snout, some people give them lizard feet and others give them theropod feet.

What's the right mix of features, /tg/?

Despite the rapeyness of that comic I too liked that kobold. I like the idea of them being a normal player race, where kobold NPCs work in the mines alongside dwarves and gnomes. Being 3ft tall lizards means spending their wages on beer at the pub will go a lot farther for them.

I prefer them as another kind of Goblin. Either shittier weedier goblins like Whitebox, or the special goblin "smiths" who work the goblin metal into goblin weapons who are also distinctly blue in color.

Egg yolk sacs connect to embryos at roughly the right spot for bellybuttons.

Birds hatch with a wound there, same as mammals, but theirs heals over better so they don't have belly buttons per-se. It's plausible that kobolds don't heal quite the same way.

I like to think that these things represent genetic diversity within the race. All of these things give artists options to depict different subraces/ethnicities of kobolds and avoid the sameface problem.

Did you look at OPs pic, its the old school D&D pic of kobolds, where they are scaly lizardy things that lay eggs. In more recent editions they just adhered more to the old school descriptions while expanding their lore and place within the game with better, more realistic art.

They've never been rats. And it's a fairly common thing for idiots to keep mistranslating rat-like and dog-like into rat and dog, when they just mean vaguely shaped in that manner. Which is incidentally how we got japanese dogbolds. Mistranslating dog-like heads (bearing a shape roughly analogous to a dogs), into dog headed (literally having a dogs head).

Well this is entirely correct. Their D&D influences actually mainly come from early fantasy vidya dungeon crawlers like Wizardy, Akalabeth or Ultima where in some of them they actually were dog-headed.

In the west people were inspired by Conan and D&D and made fantasy games based on that, those games found their way over to the elevens who made japanese games which were inspired on those western dungeon crawlers. From the vidya emerged their Pen & Paper games and this is why D&D actually managed to slowly get a foothold over there in the late 80s. early 90s.

Basically we accidentally taught the Japanese backwards and they rolled with it. This is why their Pen & Paper mechanics are in many cases so video game like.

That's actually an interesting idea if they've been interacting with other races for a while. Maybe while only with other kobolds, they tend to wear them differently (e.g. hanging from their neck down their front) to spread the heat better along their bodies, but if they're going to be near humans, elves, etc., they bunch them up by their chest because those races respond more positively to females with chest protrusions.
Plus, then you can get something symbolic out of a kobold wearing her heat garment down her front around a human.

Well kobolds are a type of goblin although I agree that specific interpretation in the back is too generic.
The dragonbolds take it too far in one direction though and just become mini-dragonfolk.

I still say a mix of the three would be best; scales and horns and claws but with some rat-ish elements and maybe some patches of fur, goblin-ish ears, and a dog-like snout/face kinda like the rat one but moreso.
