Is Senshi the best dorf? Because I feel like he might very well be that. And I enjoyed how this chapter confirms that he sees the other party members as pretty much his children who he has to care for, and it's honestly pretty adorable. Makes me wonder if he's ever had kids of his own.
>>
>>51725261
I thought about Laius' prospects for learning this stuff and I considered whether it would even be worth attempting to teach it to him in the first place. I mean, in a way it's just enabling his suicidal antics. But on the other hand, I can see how it's more plausible that he would learn magic than that he would learn how to not put himself in danger and get hurt.

I like the idea that there are different "systems" of magic in-setting, making magic less of a universal constant and something that people can reach from different, not entirely mutually intelligible approaches makes magic less like fantasy science and more like a supernatural art IMO.
Didn't one of the specials already introduce differences between Gnomish and Elven magic and how it caused some golems to malfunction cause someone mixed them up?

Konosuba's shitty art works in it's favor, weirdly enough? It's just...fitting, somehow.
>>
>>51726018

You don't watch Konosuba for stunning vistas and extravagant special effects.

You watch Konosuba for the funny interactions between a gang of dysfunctional losers as they bumble their way through a bullshit fantasy world.

Hell, even when the art budget was somewhat decent in Season 1 my favorite character was Aqua entirely because her animation and design was cartoony and obnoxious.
>>
>>51726034
Maybe in the first season, but I had to stop watching after the first episode of the second season.
>>
>>51725693
But animal knowledge should fall under ranher skills. (I don't know I don't play dnd). At the very least he has a few points in ranger skills.
>>
>>51726086
Animal knowledge should fall under rural upbringing or animal husbandry backgrounds.

If you don't know what a ranger is beyond "nature guy who uses sword instead of magic", don't presume to declare what is a ranger and what isn't.
>>
>>51726077
It gets more tolerable after the first ep.
>>
>>51726076
Anime is a visual media. Of course it can deliver on other aspects and Cromartie High shows that comedy can be great while still looking rather boring and motionless, for the most part. While it often worked in its favor in the first season, I found the first episode I just want to stress that is all I watched, maybe it got better really ugly, like they didn't care anymore.

>>51726134
Well, then I should give it a try on some lazy afternoon.
>>
>>51726086
In DnD, you can put points into whatever skill you like. Classes will get bonuses to skills that are normally associated with their theme, but there's nothing stopping a warlock from learning animal husbandry or a fighter learning about arcana.

Especially because wizards have spells that ignore magic res.
>>
>>51726223
... I mean, abusing wealth-by-level to get magic effects IS really powerful, though? It's part of why Vow of Poverty is considered so bad for monks, you lose out on important stuff like freedom of movement and flight
>>
>>51725295
Not multi-classing. Class change from Fighter to Lord(Paladin). Dungeon Meshi is based on Wizardry.
>>
>>51726184
This is closest to Wizardry IMO and I'd say the party is:
>Bishop
>Fighter
>Fighter
>Thief

Bishop is an elite class that can use priest and mage spells. Marcille has ability in both (but more towards mage). Right now Laius is upgrading to Lord, which is Fighter + Priest spells.
>>
>>51726288

Marcille is teaching Laicus Healing/Protection spells in the chapter. Which would be implying an upgrade to Lord to Japanese readers familiar with Wizardry.

The main differences between a Fighter and a Lord in the Wizardry series is that the Fighter gains extra attacks slightly faster and the Lord gains some Priest Magic and get access to the best non-evil equipment.

Nah. As I and other have pointed out he is upgrading from Fighter to Lord (aka Paladin). Going Gish would be upgrading to Samurai and gaining Mage spells.

I know what a ranger in the Tolkien sense is. But what defines the ranger class in the dND sense escapes me. However, you will find animal knowledge skills in the ranger class template for GURPS dungeon fantasy which is my frame of reference for tabletop.

Do laius reads as a ranger/fighter skill hybrid to me.

Yes. But I were doing this point buy, sensitive spent more on ranger skills and also has a dwarf racial template. While laius is a human with a spread of fighter, animal knowledge, and general purpose skills.

So sensitive is more 'rangery' but laius has maybe 10-20 points in ranger stuff.

>>
>>51726561
Oh, forgot about her (and also missed the Japanese style blades). She may actually be a Samurai though. She did ask Chilchack to check the chests rather than doing it herself.

>>51726606
I think your problem is that you are trying to interpret the characters as if they were from GURPS rather than the BDnD/ADnD 1e that Wizardry originates from.
>>
>>51726791
Ninjas aren't exactly known for their looting capabilities.

Also her blades and placements are not traditional samurai affairs. She's definitely a ninja archetype
>>

>>51727158

>>
>>51726791
I said before that that I was using the Tolkien definition. Either way animal knowledge is not a fighter skill even by 1ed standards. So if we are reconciling laius' encyclopedic knowledge of creatures, ranger is the first thing to come to mind. Not to mention GURPS DF is a direct analogue to D&D in some aspects so the class descriptions are similar if not exactly how they are defined in the latter.

The only problem here is that Laius does not suffer the same equipment limitations as a ranger (which you pointed out) which is why I treat this world as point buy since class restrictions don't seem to exist in this world the same they do in Wizardry and DnD.
>>
>>51727213
So, Laius had a choice of either supporting and feeling up the elven buttmonkey and being able to quickly ditch her in case of danger or hauling an extra sack of equipment that would get in the way during combat and he would be unable to quickly remove if ambushed. Instead the utility character gets the less debilitating job.

I've been saying from the beginning he's a fighter/ranger and going to be adding cleric or priest to the mix. Then someone says he can't be a ranger because equipment restrictions and no tracking ability. None of these things are a problem in my main system and i've played others where multiclassic is a major part of charGen.

The point we are trying to make is that we know the basic system being used and that it is not yours.

Lacius is a Fighter going Lord. Not a multiclass Fighter/Ranger multiclassing again into priest.
>>

>First off 1e has a non-weapon proficiency system for those non-class skills.
So is animal knowledge a fighter skill or not? That is all I want to know.

>The point we are trying to make is that we know the basic system being used and that it is not yours.
I'm not trying to convince anyone that this isn't anything more than wizardry and sprinklings of Dungeon Master. And clearly I don't know enough about wizardry to make comparisons so I stick with what I know which is point buy and multiclassing roles. Now I know what a lord is. Great. But fighter doesn't fully encompass what Liaus or Senshi do.

I'm curious but does Senshi only read as a fighter to you?
>>
>>51727477
>Stop assuming that just because I haven't pled D&D I don't know how to fantasy dungeon crawl.
I'm assuming that because you haven't played D&D you don't understand that D&D's skill system lets you take skills from outside your class without having a multiclass or doing anything except having your normal single class and advancing nonstandard skills.

>>

Yeah, OSR style was first really made "official" when the key was printed in Basic Edition D&D. It's been pretty standard for almost all OSR games.

>>51727953
True to an extent, but many players tend to draw maps in the same way and style for a given game due to the way the mapping was taught to them. The only thing odd about the cover is that there don't seem to be open doorways, but that could be due to Japanese standards for wizardry mapping.
>>
>>51728025
>The only thing odd about the cover is that there don't seem to be open doorways, but that could be due to Japanese standards for wizardry mapping.

Wizardry only really has three door states: "Door," "Pickable Door" and "Door which requires a keyitem." There is no Open Door/Closed Door state.

Not really. Wizardy is a 1981 game based on the 1977 BD&D and AD&D rule systems. The series pretty much defined dungeon crawl fantasy for Japan. OSR is just a western movement to go back to the same style.

Hmm. Their party seems a bit unbalanced after losing most of their actually useful members in the beginning.

-A thief with low combat capacity that concentrates on traps and perception
-A mid-level commoner with some strange lore knowledge being a dungeon hobo and farming and cooking in dungeons.
-A wizard that specializes in non-combat oriented magic
-A meatshield with nature lore and questionable eating habits.

Sounds like a start for a sitcom or something. Red dwarf in dungeon

And obviously, thinking otherwise means that you hate a cute elf for no reason.

>due to oppression for no reason
We don't know why. I really hoped that the chapters afterwards would shed some light on it. I'm a bit disappointed because of this and also wonder why the other characters don't ask her out on it.

If it's not the case, then that means that this is a problem specific to the forbidden magic, which the normal healing magic wouldn't have had.
>hurr, I'll pretend you said the opposite of what you said so that it supports my point
This is not an argument.

>it's considered forbidden.
Which is presumably for some kind of good reason.

>more than making sound arguments.
If my arguments are unsound, contest them. So far I'm the only one making any argument at all.

>you need other things meat and she was really tired afterwards.
Downsides relative to the normal resurrection magic. Normal resurrection magic has those same problems. If forbidden magic is forbidden, that means that choosing forbidden magic over normal magic would have a downside; it is fundamentally worse in some way. Otherwise, everyone would just use forbidden magic.

>I really hoped that the chapters afterwards would shed some light on it.
They fucking did. That whole thing where the dark elf was able to obligate her due to a pre-existing geiss applied to the dragon. The thign that we're fucking talking about.

>Please don't bully the mangaka
That was sarcasm, imbecile. You're assuming she'd a goddamn idiot, and I don't think that's true.
>>
>>51740010
>then that means that this is a problem specific to the forbidden magic
But there is no proof of that and there is no need for that in the causal train. You are making this more complicated than it is. Any kind of soul-merging is out of the question, everything happened due to Farlyn consisting of monster flesh and there is no need for magic going wrong in this equation.
>If my arguments are unsound, contest them
I already said that they are based on speculation.
>Normal resurrection magic has those same problems
So, you really are agreeing with me that the magic used doesn't make a difference.
>That whole thing where the dark elf was able to obligate her due to a pre-existing geiss applied to the dragon
Which probably has something to do with the dungeon and the sorcerer being the master of the dungeon, not automatically with the magic Marcille used. The best thing I can think of is that this kind of magic seems to use the blood of the caster.
>That was sarcasm
It's almost like my memetic answer reflects that.
>>
>>51740120
>there is no need for magic going wrong in this equation.
There's nothing that implies that this magic has gone wrong, but there is also nothing to imply that this isn't how the forbidden spell always works, and the fact that it's forbidden implies that such a problem exists.

>I already said that they are based on speculation.
That's not contesting the argument, it's simply false. My arguments are based on the facts that
1. As the magic is forbidden, it likely has some problems associated with it that make it worse than normal magic
2. Considering the degree to which characters talk about things (exposition), if this was a concern with normal resurrection magic, the characters would have mentioned it when discussing the problem in the past.
3. Kui Ryoko is not a hack, and therefore probably didn't go with any of the "but it COULD make no sense!" options you've levied as alternate possibilities.

>So, you really are agreeing with me that the magic used doesn't make a difference.
Not with regards to using meat (which was explicitly stated) or using mana (which is what made her tired). Since these points are not ways in which forbidden magic is worse, the problem with it (see point one, above) must be something else. Also see again:
>>hurr, I'll pretend you said the opposite of what you said so that it supports my point
>This is not an argument.

>Which probably has something to do with the dungeon and the sorcerer being the master of the dungeon
The geiss itself may, yes. But if the magic used wasn't a factor at all, he'd be able to do that to every adventurer that got resurrected in the dungeon.

>hurr, just memeing you bro!
>>
>>51740225
>and the fact that it's forbidden implies that such a problem exists
That's it. I'm switching terms. Your argument is not based on speculation, but implications.
>it likely has some problems
>likely
Probably, maybe, though I'm staying with my hard facts and use that what we know. The forbidden magic and why it's forbidden is still a mystery.
>the characters would have mentioned it when discussing the problem in the past
Or the fact that they didn't talk about it means, that there are no problems.
>"but it COULD make no sense!"
I'm not even arguing against it making sense. Such a thing could make sense. I'm arguing that there is not enough evidence for it to be true.
>he'd be able to do that to every adventurer that got resurrected in the dungeon.
No, the resurrection may happen with the dead's own flesh, or he may not even need to be healed. Also there is nothing indicating that the sorcerer controls every creature in the dungeon. That's my own speculation, but I believe he controls just some, maybe even only the dragon. Also the sorcerer may need to be realitively close, we saw him actively seeking the dragon out.
>>
>>51740363
>Your argument is not based on speculation, but implications.
Yeah, I said that already way back up here
>>51739355
>inference
And repeatedly thereafter. You know what inference is, right? The relationship between implication and inference is the same as the relationship between light and vision.

>I'm staying with my hard facts
Yeah, if we only look at hard facts we know fuck all. We don't even technically know that the dragon meat had anything to do with it, even though that much is totally fucking obvious. But this is a seinen work. High school level reading comprehension is expected, and that includes inference.

>Or the fact that they didn't talk about it means, that there are no problems.
Yes, that's what I was saying. There is no such problem with the usual (not forbidden) resurrection magic, which they planned to use back when they thought they'd have the option. Hence, the problem is unique to the forbidden version.

>I'm arguing that there is not enough evidence for it to be true.
There isn't enough evidence to say it's categorically incontestably true. This is literature, not science. There still exists enough evidence to say that it is probably true.

>No, the resurrection may happen with the dead's own flesh, or he may not even need to be healed.
If it's a property of the dungeon (and his mastery of it), that wouldn't matter.
>Also there is nothing indicating that the sorcerer controls every creature in the dungeon. That's my own speculation, but I believe he controls just some, maybe even only the dragon.
Again, only relevant if it's not a property of the dungeon, as you asserted, but of his control over specific beings. Which is what I think too, so if you're modifying your previous statement then I agree.
>Also the sorcerer may need to be realitively close, we saw him actively seeking the dragon out.
Well yeah, I think that's pretty much a given (otherwise, why wouldn't he have done it at range?) but the potential would be there, anyway.

>Hence, the problem is unique to the forbidden version
And yet this doesn't exclude the possibility that it has nothing to do with the magic, but with the fact that they used the dragon's flesh, which the sorcerer has control over. And this theory works without any further explanation just by observing what we've seen, no further implications needed.
>There still exists enough evidence to say that it is probably true.
>enough
No witty retort, I can just say: "No".

The problem with all this is that Ryoko is supposed to be so great at world-building and explaining how her dungeon works, but having to guess around on this issue just isn't like her. Therefore I believe that it's just that simple and she expected us to conclude that's because of the flesh alone. She deliberately made Marcille disputing that soul-merging or anything like this might happen, but she pointed us at the flesh of Farlyn not being her own.

And exactly what is it supposed to be that makes that magic do it? What is your theory on this? Why should the magic Marcille used make it possible for the sorcerer to control Farlyn so easily? What is so specific about it that it could only happen because of this art of magic?
>>
>>51740668
>this doesn't exclude the possibility that it has nothing to do with the magic
So you think that if she'd stayed dead, the elf could have used his magic on her? The question isn't whether it would happen with the forbidden magic, the only point of contention is if it might also happen with the non-forbidden magic. The lack of evidence that it would have happened, while not conclusive in the way that 2+2=4 is conclusive, strongly suggests that it would not have happened in a normal resurrection.

>I can just say: "No".
That's a reasonable enough opinion, I suppose.

>having to guess around on this issue just isn't like her
Not necessarily. We're used to a lot of exposition, but remember the first time the dark elf appeared? She uses tons of exposition when it comes to worldbuilding, but when it comes to the plot, she's totally happy to leave people guessing.

>She deliberately made Marcille disputing that soul-merging or anything like this might happen
She had Marcille clarify that the dungeon doesn't keep monster souls around, and therefore monsters can't be resurrected after a period of time (and don't form ghosts) which implies that their souls are only around (and thus usable for resurrection magic) the way it happens on the surface: Only right after death. Since the dragon meat was used right after death, the soul lingering wasn't explicitly precluded by her statement. We don't know how much lingering is normal, only that it's not indefinite.

>Why should the magic Marcille used make it possible for the sorcerer to control Farlyn so easily?
I think Marcille's magic lacks safeguards that modern healing magic would have to prevent this sort of thing, and presumably other kinds of edge-case fuckery as well. So in this case it was necessary since the raw power of modern magic would be insufficient without a world-class expert, but if you're a general practitioner you'd rather follow the safe way.
>>
>>51740837
>So you think that if she'd stayed dead, the elf could have used his magic on her?
No, there is no reason for that.
>strongly suggests that it would not have happened in a normal resurrection
I really don't see any evidence for that. Something like "safeguards" has not been established in this world. Or fill me up if I forget something, but all talk was just about possession by ghosts and how intact the body has to be.
>but when it comes to the plot
This magical issue isn't really plot, I would put it under world-building.
>>
>>51741030
>This magical issue isn't really plot
It's heavily related to the reveal of Marcille's magic, to Farlyn (who is like 100% plot engine) and to the black elf, who is the BBEG. It's plot.
>>
>>51741053
That "how" so far has no significance, I can see it becoming related to the plot later on when we will learn more about Marcilles magic hopefully, the nature of the dungeon and probably how to save Faryln again, but so far it doesn't really change anything.
