Depends on the monster; Dragons are notorious for being under-CR'd thanks to their metric shit-ton of abilities.

Well I know how I could break that in half.

First off I'm going to need to play a Phantom Thief. Truly the most degenerate of classes.

Because you're the attaches to the actual diplomats. You do what the diplomat cannot, you meet with the people the diplomat cannot be seen talking to, and you keep the diplomat alive in the viper dens he walks into on behalf of Taldor.

What's got that tiny dragon so angry?
>>
>>51718718
The game says "not combat focused" what sort of challenges would you be referring to?
>>
>>51718730

Not him... But probably social events, duels, subterfuge, blackmail, seduction, mass combat, skirmishes, back-alley ambushes, etc.

If you can imagine it's something a stuffy Taldan ambassador can get involved with, it will probably happen.
>>
The 14th of Calistril approaches. How do you plan to crush the hopes and dreams of the amorous mortal insects which teem beneath your feet?
>>
>>51718730
Actually, the game says "Be advised that while this game is primarily social intrigue, combat will figure into it." So if you fuck up, you have a sword to fall back on, if you end up needing to recruit the Yaks, you'll be able to do them some favors, and if some player in the city is vested in Kelesh and wants you all fucking dead to strike a blow against Taldor/win favor with Kelesh, you'll be able to fight back against the hordes of mercenaries they send to kill you, the diplomat, everyone in the building you were staying at, and everyone in a one block radius around it.

I tend to take inspiration from Deus Ex for non-social stuff (and social stuff, to a lesser extent).
>>
>>51718786
>and if some player in the city is vested in Kelesh and wants you all fucking dead to strike a blow against Taldor/win favor with Kelesh, you'll be able to fight back against the hordes of mercenaries they send to kill you

Wait.

Wait a second.

PCs can go turn-coat and declare for Kelesh? We might have people sneaking in conversations with our characters, trying to sway them to the Qadiran side?

Saorise is essentially an Avowed's Fae patron that can buff up their sword and give extra Amrita at a point in the game when you don't need Amrita.
>>
>>51718821
Not what I meant by player.

I meant it in the sense of "This (NPC) person is a power *player* in the city, and this is a very specific manner by which they might try to end you and everyone associated with you." It'd be preferable for the party to not be built with treachery in mind (you're hand picked attaches for a reason), though there will be times where NPCs attempt to convince you to come over to the Keleshite side.

So looking at the character's preliminary build, before I begin nailing everything down.

His Appearance score, without magic items, looks to be (18+14+14+20)/4=16.5. With magic items it will be above 19.

His performance skills are looking to have around a +60 for the most part.

I think this is going to be a fun time.

I need a title for this man. The 600lbs greatest performer the world has ever seen. An interplanar superstar.

Social intrigue games are fine and all, but I'm more interested in hazardous romps through magical physics-defying dungeon filled with all sorts of abominations to greataxe in half.
Or you can do both, in fact I've wanted for a long time to run a game that had a similar premise to Magi the Labyrinth of Magic, which would be exactly that
>>
>>51719120

>>51719167
As much as I hate to side with the witch hunter, 2hu did self-admit they don't see any reason to tone things down when making characters: either go big or don't go at all. At first I was on the fence, but that really hammered the point home. It's an attitude that will not normally gel well with people who function, well, normally.

Do you blame me for not caring, we all know the race is stupid.

Also, it occurs to me that 2hu, or at least a 2hu-alike, was the most vocal about the stat-stacking the succubus had when it first came out and how bad it was. The irony is not lost to me. Like, 2hu could use a tiefling to get the same thematic results, but then the numbers would go down by at least 7, and that may as well be character suicide.

Oh, god, help me. I'm turning into the new Witchunt anon!

Once, when we're in town at an armorer. After that, it's the Endurance feat and mithril letting me keep it on until we're done adventuring.
>>

Charon's a pretty chill dude, really.

He doesn't try to kill you. He doesn't even try to inconvenience you. He just offers you a boatride across the Styx if you pay him. He even scales the price depending on how powerful you are.

He only does anything hostile if YOU start shit. And he doesn't even try to kill you, he just wants to leave. He'll just thwack you with his paralyzing boatpole and go. Leaving you to think about what led you to making such poor life decisions for however many minutes it lasts for.

Charon's cool.
>>
>>51720785
>Pegasus Knight: Paladin Archetype based around mounted combat, with a decent 'No spellcasters' theme.

Nobility of Soul is legitimately overpowered. Having a combination of Stalwart and Evasion stacking on top of Divine Grace means that you will practically never be subject to area of effect spells, especially considering that you only give up an ability that the archetype would be rendered unable to use anyway.

Inviolate Soul's clause on the Pegasus Knight and his mount gaining Spell Immunity does not specify what Spell Immunity actually means. Does the class feature give them the constant effects of the spell Spell Immunity? If so, a caster level needs to be defined, along with how the Pegasus Knight has to choose which spells will not affect him and whether or not his spell choices are permanent.
If not, you need to define how the ability works. Does it grant full immunity to spells and spell like abilities? If so, it's the strongest ability in Pathfinder. If not, you need to specify what it does do.

Going by your attached pic, I would guess you're going for a Fire Emblem feel for this archetype, in which case I would recommend having a class feature that imposes a weakness against missile weapons if you're going to go for the high magic resistance of FE pegasus knights.

Also, I would personally like the archetype better if it wasn't an initiator. It seems like a lot of homebrew lately has been relying on maneuvers instead of writing actual class features, and a lot of tables still don't allow PoW.

Well, Witch is a good class. They can also pull the Necromancy angle pretty dang nicely on their own too. The Gravewalker archetype is pretty nice if you want to be a Necromancy Witch.

As for race, if you're going with Witch, pretty much anything with an Int bonus is a good bet. Or just NOT a penalty. Human is always a solid option for race.

Not really, she has used spells that reverse healing, channeled spells through swords, item crafting, but primarily a blaster from what I remember, but there was also flight and a few other utilities.
Probably a sorceress to get the closest since she had a few spells she used a lot, probably feat into some metamagic as well to make those spells scale better.

>>51721226
As a witch, you get to add two free spells to you spellbook every time you level up, in addition to getting all cantrips and a bunch of first level spells at first level. You can also get additional spells from other witches or by feeding your familiar scrolls with them.
>>
>>51721260
Thank you, finally. is there any pointers for playing pathfinder? What to do, what not to do. How to play a good necromancer etc?
>>
>>51721226
Okay, so.

First thing to know is that Spell Level is ENTIRELY different from Character Level.

Secondly, as a Witch, you store spells you 'know' in your Familiar. Your familiar can hold any number of different spells so no need to worry about that. Every morning you sit down and have a chat with them, and 'prepare' your spells. I'm just gonna refer to this as 'knowing' spells from now on even though that's technically something different.

Preparing is basically picking which spells you want to use that day. Since witches are Preparatory casters, they need to prepare a spell once for each time they want to use it. So if you prepare Cure Light Wounds once, you can cast it once that day. Want to use it twice, you have to prepare it twice. It's often likened to loading a gun.

The number of spells you can prepare each day is listed on your class table. You also get bonus spells per day the higher your Intelligence is. The table for that's in the ability scores section I believe. Also, as >>51721260 says, you start play knowing all 0th level spells (or cantrips), but can still only prepare so many of them each day. Upside is, a cantrip isn't expended once it's used, so you can use them as much as you want. You also start the game knowing three first-level spells, plus an additional number equal to your Intelligence modifier (So if your intelligence is 18, then you'd start off knowing four extra 1st level spells due to your +4 modifier).

Every time you level up, you learn two new spells of any level you can cast. You can also learn new spells by your familiar basically having a chat with another witch's familiar, or you can get a scroll and, if that spell is on your spell list, you can feed it to your familiar and try to teach it to them.

The PFSRD is a really good free resource. http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/base-classes/witch/

It's a bit of a mess right now though, they're amid hopping to a new site. Ask if you got more questions.

I'd say do it in two parts.

The main shell/parts of the vehicle (like the boat or whatever) would be ship.

...ah, I buggered up. Spell Immunity was what it was call in 3.5. I'll need to actually define it as they've removed that clause from the Spell Resistance part of the rules.

Back then it was 'Spell resistance that cannot be overcome'. It's a level 20 capstone, after all and an extrapolation on it's general 'don't care about magic' theme.

Nobility of Soul is very powerful, yes but it also arrives at level 11. Evasion has been available to classes since level 2 and the number of wis/fort spells that have minor effects on a pass is very, very minor. It's also a small thing but it only works on spells. It doesn't protect you from a Dragon's Breath or any number of supernatural or extraordinary abilities. I'll need to ponder it, however.

A feature that imposes a weakness on a class feels like rather poor game design. No one will want 'This makes you worse/more vulnerable'

Is there a particular issue with it being an initiator? It doesn't actually work with the 'Be an initiator' paladin archetype as it is now.

Addendum to the comment on initiation:

Paladin is in a bit of an odd place with converting to initiator.

Smite Evil is really good. Really, really good. Keeping that along with Initiation really feels like way too much offence but it's also a limited enough use ability with limited targets so it doesn't feel like a fair trade for said initiation.

So you end up with a bit of a case of 'Smite evil isn't worth initiation BUT you can't keep smite evil in any archetype that gains initiation reasonably'. As a result, there isn't really an easy 'Convert to initiator, do nothing else' archetype you can make for Paladin.
>>
>>51722110
Trade away smite and spells for initiation, just make sure they can get crane as it fills the murder the shit out of evil role well. Honestly I would trade spells and smite even for the max level 6 initiation that archetypes get.
>>
>>51722132

I'd honestly call that a bit too much of a trade. The Paladin spell list is full of some absolutely stunning spells like Bestow Grace (Or it's bigger 'You are now a paladin too' upgrade) and being capped at 4th level gives you a lot of access to wands and potions for those really good spells.
>>
DR3/- or AC+2 at level 10+?
>>
>>51722260
AC +2 if you haven't completely dumped it before.
>>
>>51722153
I would not, maneuvers gives you access to a fly speed, protection from evil continously, attacks that heal you in addition to doing extra damage, and that is just from crane, you can get even more utility or damage depending on the other things you get access to, also maneuvers can be used much more often then smites.
Paladins have good spells sure, but to make items out of their spells costs feats you could spend much more effectively.
>>
>>51722316

>you access to a fly speed, protection from evil continuously.

Both of those can come from literally the same Paladin Spell. Angelic Aspect.

There isn't really anything quite like Angelic Aspect, Greater or Bestow Grace of the Champion (both are low enough level to make into wands) for 6th level initiators.

I need some input/opinions on a character I'm going to play soon. It's a ratfolk magus that has a very obvious jewish tint to it

I've got the idea after reading in some forum about a player who played a ratfolk character and got faced with ingame-racism by another player and decided to run with it. The concept seems cool and I'd like to give it a try (neither I nor any other player in my group is jewish, nor does anyone have any racist tendencies - this is just for fluff within the game)

The GM allowed me to have considerably more starting wealth than usual and some additional spells known. We also don't track encumbrance anymore. So that might explain a few things about the character sheet.

so - what do you guys think?
any suggestions or ideas - or did you find any crucial mistakes?

Well you get angelic aspect the earliest at level seven it lasts minutes a level, so it is good for one combat per casting, where stances you can keep up through the entire day if you want. You can disallow specific kinds of casters though, just like you can deny third party stuff.

And yet you're still going to have to read the spell section anyway, unless you're just going to ban casters entirely, at which point you shouldn't be playing Pathfinder in the first place.

This.
>"fuck you, you cannot smite a fourth time today, I don't CARE how many demon lords are coming after you, and how I hate them so much I sent you directly after them, you ran out you ran out, fuck you and die"
feels very fucking silly sometimes.

Whereas in the case of SPELLS, for the big casters, you'll run out of encounters before you run out of spells per day; hell if well optimized you'll only run out if you didn't sleep and recover them the last one or two days of such fighting!

With maneuvers, you spent it you spent it... but you can recover it. Most of the balancing is done encounter by encounter; you always have your full power to offer, but it's gated behind action restrictions and the like.
>>
>>51722708
you could easily ban casters and use psionics or spheres. or pow. you don't HAVE to learn the spell section to play the game.
>>

The real question is why you wouldn't learn the spell section, it's for the most part trivial and you can look it up anyway if you need to in play.

In order to make a one sided "deal" with a planar bound outsider, you need:

>magic circle
>planar anchor
>planar binding
This is just to call it. You want to stand inside a magic circle focused outward and have the outsider inside a separate inward focused circle.

>eniveration
>bestow curse
These will lower it's skill checks and saves

>gaes
This will further lower it's saves and skill checks, but takes awhile.

>blindness
>improved invisibility
>telekenesis/chains of perdition
And on top of that, you need to ether only bind things that are weak enough that you aren't afraid or to keep it from targeting you with any of it's abilities. Grappling it and binding it in some adamantium chain or manacles is a good idea.

Anything I'm missing?

>-4 penalty on attack rolls, saves, ability checks, and skill checks.

I'm tempted to make the tabletop equivalent of a Sandbox MMO using Pathfinder.
Basically, adventuring parties are usually-temporary, much like forming a party in an MMO, it's just whoever's around and trying to do the same thing, meanwhile there would be other parties in the gameworld, each supervised by their own GM's and doing various world-changing things as well.
The problem I foresee with this is that for it to work, we need at least a small pool of 10 or so players to start, though I'm not against players having "alts"...

>>
>>51723223

I mean the whole point of this spell isn't to be all "look at me I have ten demons following me around making combat easy". Its to start plot hooks and expand strategic levels of power.

At the level where you are binding things, having a harem of succubuts isn't really useful for more than spying, assassinating weak opponents, and for making prude diplomatic guests uncomfortable with your open display of strange and unusual sexual acts.

I'm a DM myself, and I know the difference between "lol look at how OP i can make my character" and "this is interesting as fuck, and gives you enough plot hooks for like three years of adventures".

There is a difference though.

The "you get one save or you lose" was heavily reduced in pathfinder. Glitterdust didn't give you a save each round before.

The only thing that Paizo changed that actually matters is that you can't apply your modifier to something more than once.

Wizards didn't really need to get the ability to always win initiative, and rewarding single-classed characters and punishing dips only hurts martials. Calling Pathfinder an improvement over 3.5 is misleading, for every improvement Paizo screwed up something else even worse than WotC did.

Pathfinder, as a general rule of thumb, made many of the "save or lose" spells at lower levels ether offer saves each round, or made them weaker. Solid fog, glitterdust, forcecage, etc.

Yes, some stuff slipped past the editor.

If we are going to go though every bullshit spell in ether system we will die of old age.

>>51723398
You do remember celerity right? The "every caster always goes first always" spell? The divination wizard go first ability is weaker, and less available.

Same with the immediate action teleport that conjuration wizards got. Now it's a move or something. Before you could dodge charges and shit.

Did you know that the haughty nobility of Taldor turn their nose at Aasimar births, for it represents a muddied bloodline (even if that bloodline is glorious?) However, hypocrites that they are, Aasimar are still highly valued and desirable as bards, lovers, and courtiers?

So I'm trying to do some work on an unchained Magus. What would you guys want to see out of a magus fix? Some of things I'm trying to accomplish

>making various elemental arcana to give roughly the same experience as SPELLCOMBATSHOCKINGGRASPSPELLSTRIKE without the magus having to load their prepared spells down with 20 different versions of the same exact spell

>>
>>51724598

Mage Armor is a +4 armor bonus to AC
>>
>>51724590
With a full attack the best you can do is give "Dead" to 4 or 5 mooks, or 1-2 real enemies per turn.
With defensive focus and/or strikes you can neuter every motherfucker in the room, setting up your party to debuff them with "Dead" very easily and safely.
I think that's fine for a control-type character to focus on doing.
>>
>>51724590
This is mightily assuming you can reach the foes first, or you want to be in a position to use your class features (near allies).
Anon, your white room ideals fail in the face of actual games. I am playing a warder, we were just on a boat attacked by fish people. Defensive Focus allowed me to slap their shit as they came from the water onto the boat, buff my teammates if they survived/evaded me, and allowed me to murder them when they tried to flee.

Pool strike was actually something I intended to focus on, basically replacing shocking grasp as the de-facto damage-dealer. I agree with the magus basically being locked into 18-20 weapons for endless crit-fishing, but it's hard to find any way of actually fixing this problem without removing the feature outright.

If I make it adjust with critical multiplier, the Falcata will become the king instead of whatever 18-20/x2 weapons the magus would use instead. If I based it solely off of handedness, then the greatsword would, as usual, be the only weapon anyone would ever use because why the fuck would you bother with any other 2h weapon.

If the Magus WERE to lose the ability to crit with spells on spellstrike, what would be a good tradeoff for this? Removing the attack roll penalty from spell combat might be a start, but that seems like a really weak trade considering shocking grasp was basically a +4 to hit against any humanoid enemy.

And when we're dealing with the insane price scaling that +X bonuses cost on weapons, the only things that measure up are the most powerful weapon special abilities. 90% of the weapon properties should have been static price increases.

>>51725157
It's not hard to fix the Magus when all of its issues are well-known, the biggest one being that there are exactly two magus builds, and one of them doesn't function until very high levels.
>>
Wait a second, am I a genius?
You could make a +1/+1 training/training quarterstaff, yeah? Well, do you need to TWF it to get both feats?
>>
>>51725427
Theoretically yeah, that would work. Hell, one end could give TWF and the other end could give Improved TWF, so that it's its own little feat-chain just by carrying it.
>>
>>51725427
That's not genius at all. TWF is not worth any money at all, never mind the feat cost.
>>
>>51725446
No, you can't use the bonus feat from Training to qualify for other feats, it's mentioned specifically in the entry.
>>
>>51725380
Nope.
>>
>>51725446
I was thinking more along the lines of cheesing out 2 feats for 16k enchantment cost. Feats like the last feat in a style feat chain, or dead-end class feature upgrades like Powerful Mark or whatever.

>>51725450
But I'm literally saying that you don't TWF it.
>>
>>51725349
>Greatsword
>Not Falchion

Jokes aside, Spell Combat/Spellstrike and the crit problem aren't really the most annoying problem. It's more of a thing like how "all barbarians just want a greatsword" or "all paladins want a falchion". There ARE other options (cutlass, rapier, kukri, a bunch of exotic weapons nobody in their right mind would spend a feat on) but they're just not as supported as the allmighty Scimitar. Which is a shame since I like scimitars, and want it all to myself.

>>51725410
Do you mean "basically what we have now", except the Magus isn't remotely as good as a wizard because his spell list is shit and most of his features barely help him scrape by on the "hitting things" part?
>>
>>51725498
You need to have it drawn and in hand, so why would you put TWF on it and then not use TWF?

You don't need TWF to be wielding a weapon in each hand
>>
>>51725551
The core issue boils down to "How do we combine the killing potential of melee combat with the flexibility of wizards?"
The answer is you don't.

Barbarian with greatsword is less extreme than Magus with Scimitar. While the greatsword/falchion are the "best" 2h weapons, the barbarian can do just fine with any 2d6 2h weapon. Multiple aspects of the magus simply REQUIRE a scimitar.

>currently only viable 1pp way of getting dex-to-damage on a magus in a reasonable timeframe
>18-20 weapon, another thing the magus needs because spellstrike demands high crit ranges above all else.
>one-handed weapon, because it's the only kind of weapon a magus can wield

>>51725592
The magus can't have the flexibility of a wizard. Most of its spell list is combat focused, and while it has the ability to poach wizard spells, it will never ever make up for the gap between them even with the magus' uncanny ability to fuck the action economy. The magus doesn't necessarily need flexibility in spells, it needs flexibility in playstyle.

They combined the worst aspects of melee and magic into one package when they made the magus, because it has all of the "why the fuck would I bother with anything but X spell" aspect of spellcasting with the "guess I'm stuck doing THIS" aspect of beatstick classes.

Either way, this has been a productive discussion and I have a good idea of where to go from here.

Two (out of four total, recently down from five) players in my campaign were dating each other in a long-term (several years, they have a kid) relationship that seems to have just ended today, in a somewhat messy fashion judging by what I can see so far.

What are the odds this end my campaign? I expect I'll probably be losing one or maybe even both players, and one of the other two players (one that's not in a relationship at all but is job-seeking) has become less available lately and might cease being available at all if his job searching produces results in the near future.

How many players can you lose and have it still be worth while to recruit new people and continue a campaign, as opposed to just dropping the campaign and possibly start a new one with new people? We're ~15 sessions in and probably close to 1/4 of the way through the campaign as I've planned it, if that matters.

>6th level caster with a hyper specialized spell list
>it has one build that actually works properly
>people want to adjust it so it can have more than one build
>this somehow equates to giving it the flexibility of a wizard

But that's completely wrong, anon.

>>51725680
I know the Scimitar is the go-to, that's why I said "allmighty scimitar", because paizo assfucked every other option. That part is less of a magus problem, and more of a "paizo is retarded" problem. This is slightly solved by houserules/3pp to unfuck things, but you're then still limited somewhat by the 18-20 thing. The thing there is that crit is so relied upon because it's the best way to maximize your limited resource of shocking grasps, which shifts it from feeling like a cool bonus if you want it to being ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to maximize the only gimmick you're allowed to have.

You can't really adjust it to have more than one build
Magus was CONTAINED into that one build because as a concept it is a balance nightmare
Akin to Pandora's box, you are just looking for trouble by trying to open it.

ACTUALLY, TO TIE INTO THIS WHOLE CRIT THING: Have two kinds of pool strikes. One is the "ONE BIG BOOM" touch attack that synergizes with the whole "lucky hit" gimmick, the other is the "buff your weapon for several attacks with this element" that relies more on you landing lots of hits.

niggas you high as fuck. Letting a magus use a different weapon and energy type, or a not-shit version of chill touch/frostbite, isn't going to somehow shatter balance

Goodness that's actually a fantastic idea.
>minor weapon buff that adds a few non-multiplying dice, applies to all attacks made that turn and can function with spell-combat
>major weapon buff that functions as the equivalent of a single shocking grasp in terms of damage dice and crits, also functions with spell combat.

If the magus having more options is so cancerous and unbalanced, why is nobody bitching about all the Puppetmasters that must clearly be running rampant in games? It gives you both Magus AND Bard spell list, and lets you totally fuck action economy up and down with illusions/enchantments!

>>51725890
Having it be 1/turn is cool, but I was still thinking of the "x uses/level" like the spells.

Sorry anon, sounds like the campaign is a goner.

My character was (campaign's over, we won) a NG human Magus who equated melee combat with dance, and sought to perfect his art with constant practice. He's intelligent, well-mannered, and slightly flamboyant, a worshiper of Shelyn (after dying for the first time convinced him to pick up religion), and always tries to help others, particularly those who are not well-off because he himself came from Brevoy's lower classes.

Pretty much the opposite of the TN-borderline-NE human Oracle necromancer and worshiper of Urgathoa he ended up together with, who is an angry woman from Ustalav's upper class. She left her home when a incident resulted in her bodyguard/childhood friend turning into a wight, seeking a way to reverse the transformation alongside the now-undead man (a Monk that fit very much into the "protective older brother/father" role). She was often impulsive and was very prone to foul language (to the extent that "fuckass" became her nickname and eventual affectionate petname for my character), and much more focused on herself and her friends than the needs or problems of others- not the sort to murder for the fun of it, but certainly the sort that probably wouldn't help a stranger unless there was something to be gained from it.

The growing romance between the two seemed obvious to those that were observant enough to see it, including the Oracle's bodyguard (who eventually gave my character his explicit permission to date the Oracle, complete with threats to fuck him up if he broke her heart). The two officially became an item during a bonfire party held the day before a major assault against the BBEG. They were both a positive influence on each other.

For various assorted noble deeds done in life, when my character finally died for realzies, Shelyn plucked up his soul and transmuted him into an outsider with his mortal memories intact. Later, when the Oracle finally died, Urgathoa did the same so that the two could be together in the afterlife.

I kind of expected my campaign to be ending anyway because of other, unrelated reasons, but I wonder whether I should try to continue this campaign with my remaining players (I'll have at least one, maybe two or even three depending on what happens with my job-seeking player) and some new recruits, start this campaign over with either my old players and new recruits or just a complete set of new players, or if I should start a different campaign with my remaining players plus new recruits.

Any personal experiences or advice to help me decide?
