Mordian, although they use world-wide 19th century tactics, those tactics were set in Napoleonic wars and Scintillian fusiliers which they look as 18th century armies, a bit older for Napoleon style. Napoleonic army would fall in between of these two looks.

Kriegers lost German looks when the pickelhaube helmet was lost but I remember have seen some early minis with that helmet, mostly conversions from the steel legion.

I think that the pickelhaube is still used by some rough riders (pic related), but they are more similar to French and Belgian trench soldiers.

And there are the Teutons which have long coats and pickelhaubes.

BUT if we're only going to talk about the things Africans have done for themselves without Muslim influence... to begin with, there's the kingdoms of West Africa. Like the Ghana Empire, which took advantage of the introduction of camels to set up trade routes running across the Sahara.

Further south, on the south coast of West Africa, there was the kingdom of Benin, with its massive walled city, which existed from 1100 to 1897, and Dahomey next door, which lasted from about 1200 to 1895. They held out longer than the rest of the West African kingdoms of the time period.

Traveling down the coast of Africa brings you to the area formerly known as the Kingdom of Mataba. It resisted Portuguese conquest until about the same time that Benin fell to the English. mataba's Queen (Nzinga Mbande) set the precedent for such resistance by utterly terrifying the Portuguese in the mid-1600s.

Traveling up the east coast, we have Great Zimbabwe, which is basically just the palace for an extensive rural kingdom. The kingdom itself had trading contacts that went far, even all the way to China, via Kilwa on the coast.

Long before any of the kingdoms I have mentioned above, there was Kush. Kush was the kingdom south of Egypt along the Nile, long a source of trade and slaves. They did pretty well for themselves until they were conquered by Axum in the 4th century.

Axum lay between Kush and the Ethiopian Highlands, with enough holdings on the Red Sea coast to allow it to be a major player in the trade networks that linked Rome to China by way of India.

And of course there's Ethiopia, which has historically been a tough nut to crack, being a bunch of mountains and all. The Italians only managed to conquer it in the 1930s, having been rebuffed once before.

The Library of Timbuktu was the foremost center of learning in its day, holding an extensive collection of Muslim scholarship, in topics such as art, medicine, philosophy, and science. There were probably a lot more manuscripts than the 700,000 which have survived to the present day. But French colonial rule destroyed the old Arabic schools and people forgot the value of the manuscripts. So they sold them off one by one over the years. Then the Tuaregs came in from the desert and destroyed some more because they're a bunch of Hard-Line Muslims, and hard-liners tend to hate scholarship that contradicts their ideology.

Fortunately, the manuscripts were spirited out of Timbuktu by a group of brave scholars, and are now being preserved. Alas, the vast collection remains mostly uncatalogued and undigitized. So you can't study them yet.

In any case, Mali produced something of great value to the world, and is not to be discounted.
