Dammit anon, beat me to it.
I'm not good with giving depth to black skin. Any tips?
>there are people in this thread who still don't own an airbrush
Gritting is done. Now it has to dry and I can paint it. Then flock
sorry for the shitty pic, how'd I do on this tonk?
>>51683279
I live at home in a small government housing unit, nowhere to use one.
I've got an old pewter model that's caked in super glue. A soak in nail polish remover should so the trick, yeah? How long would you suggest he bathe for?
>>51683384
5 years.
Or rather, until the glue is gone or can be scrubbed off. The pewter should be able to take it.
>>51683284
man that looks great. i'm really jealous
>tfw have to live in small dormitory room and can't even use my primer here
>have to wait for weeks until i can finally go home to my parents and start painting again
>>51683270
Black skin is meant to be highlighted like all other skin and is rarely pitch black. Do you paint white skin just woth white paint? Even albino would have layering.
>>51683270
doesn't look that bad for me
>>51683279
I hand paint all my vehicles. Living the dream.
crossposting a little from /hhg/ since relevant to both:
Terminator squad I just finished doing poses/magnets for, still cleaning up inperfections on parts.
>>51684168
>>51684183
And some proto-stalker-bolters for recon marines, turned out of spare rod stock
>>51684168
what leegion
>>51684201
>>51684201
Those godwyn bolters look kind of naked without the top optic. Got any plastic rod?
>>51684207
Raven Guard, so lightning claws upgraded to raven's talons make for decent CS/terminator loadouts, also furious charge.
for this one the gun is just resting in place, so the wrist is a little off, would be fixed on normal use
>>51684214
How do you cut those and what material are those thin tubes made of?
>>51684216
I'd been thinking the same, still bitz box diving for spare scopes from old tac boxes
this one's still waiting on FW corvus head. soon(tm)
Probably buying my first ever spray can this week to properly get some paint on my Black Templar Vindicator and my Onager Dunecrawler.
Is it fine to base the vehicle with the spray first and then add a second layer as the base paint?
Mostly asking for my Onager, since I'm painting it white which is never not going to be a pain in the ass whenever it can.
Also, GW paint or Army Painter?
>>51684232
Lathe, material is stainless steel, the gritty surface is from sanding because if I left it the paint/primer would come right off the turned surface.
if people want to make thier own, overall length 14mm, hole in bolter body 2mm deep, front 'supressor' 2.5mm dia and 6mm length. barrel shaft 2mm dia. barrel hole 1.5mm dia and 3mm deep.
Finished some of my tartaros terminators. I don't expect to ever use these guys but they're done, at least. Armor is highlighted dark blue with lighter blue spiking that the camera isn't showing very well. The red shoulder pads were mostly for practice with tamiya clear red
>>51684254
Always cover the vehicle in a second basecoat layer over the primer. without exception.
I use mostly GW colors personally, but the correct answer is "mix whatever you need to get results you feel good about" for my raven guard legion I'm using badger, vallejo, tamiya, army painter and GW for varying shades and effects.
>>51684240
Nah, I meant the little dingle above the barrel. Always assumed it was an autosense-link. Your tigris bolters still have it, but the godwyn ones don't.
>>51684333
I'd be willing to bet that's actually a header to a blowback piston for ejection. that's what they are on modern weapons at least.
I split the Triumvirate box today and got the Visarch, how should I base him? Something unique looking is preferable. I don't have an eldar army so I can't base him in a similar manner.
>>51683270
Progress on the saurus linemen here. Which looks better? Shield and 1 pads, or 2 pads with no shield? Saurus will be repainted, no worries.
>>51683284
Looking good mate.
Back and working on more terrain. Doing some furnaces or possibly cryx theme stuff
>>51684505
and forgot pic
>>51684326
So I won't be able to use Chaos Black as the primer and then use a secondary layer as the basecoat (since it's the same paint as the brush-on Abbaddon Black n all that)? Bummer.
My "GW or Army Painter" question was directed at the spray paints, since I heard people claim both as superior already and I don't want to waste the money when there would have been a better option for spraying.
Any tips for getting an even coat with brushes over such a huge-ass are as a Vindicator shield and the likes?
>>51684525
The better option for black spray paint is neither and to go to a hardware store and buy a can there for 1/10th the price.
>>51684525
it isn't the same black. the chaos black has a different texture and consistency which leads to a different shade (presumably because of the stuff it's mixed in the can with for pressure)
just prime black and then paint abbadon over it, you'll notice the difference.
if you're speaking about primer sprays, GW's rattle can line is one of the better things they produce.
>>51684402
Forgot pic. Shield or no shield?
>>51684722
No shield, they look strange in blood bowl.
>>51684509
Nice bongs, mate.
>>51684276
What chapter/legion?
>>51684509
>>51684733
If these aren't actually bongs I'd put plasticard steel framing around them and fill them halfway with a bright green resin.
>>51684333
That's the red dot sight. Bolt pistols have them below the barrel.
>>51684722
how about no shoulder pads cause they look stupid?
>>51684509

Reposting Contemptor armoured Word Bearer DP from last thread. Thinking about adding that little preacher from the quick sketch, standing behind its back (using him as sort of a podium) reading occult texts, to represent a spell familiar. there's an area just behind the end of the front plate that would be perfect for placing a book as well, being both the book the preacher is reading from, and the Malefic Tome artifact. Thoughts? Don't want the model to end up too "busy", especially as I'll add wings later as well.
Bear.
hey wip
just started painting for the first time, got a test grid of marines drying right now. Testing out different base colours and different washes.
Question; i've seen shades sprayed ontop of one another from the same position to create transitioning highlights. Is there an ok way to do a bit of this with a brush? Like wetmixing at the top of say a pauldron and trying to feather it down?
>>51685531
wet blending is usually how transition effects are done with a brush, and it's one of the hardest techniques to pull off, and ESPECIALLY to pull it off consistently.
there are a few cases where you can do it by using medium to heavy drybrushing, but that usually only works well on textured surfaces where you're transitioning the color up the depth, or you don't mind clear lines of variation as much (flame weapon sooting comes to mind)
How does combi look?
>>51685863
>>51685863
>no tusks
Honestly it'd probably look better without the heat sink awkwardly placed on top.
>>51685880
I'll skip it on the next one, then. I was kind of exhausted and loopy when I did it.
>>51685863
Quite messy. If you have some plasma pistols lying around just use those to make combiplasmas. They're small, and therefore easier to add on to other weapons without ending up with something too bulky
>>51685743
>it's one of the hardest techniques
in over my head but at least i know im on the right train of thought
i did think of the drybrushing too, but realised it would show brush strokes.
Given it a go on one side of a marine just blending on the pauldron, back pack intake and a little on a leg. Going to see if it makes a noticable difference.
>>51684333
I thought that was the gas piston cover. note it's directly in-line with the bolt. If there's a return mechanism that absorbs recoil that's ANYTHING like what we use now, it'll be there.
The lower bit I always thought was a mounting lug for combi-weapon bits or something similar.
>>51683370
The blue on the roundel looks a tad small. Other than that, from what I can see it's not so bad. You need to find a better spot to take pictures because "what I can see" isn't as much as I'd need to give you proper advice. I can't tell if you washed or shaded those things at all. The color is a bit flat, and the paint on that side skirt looks a thick, but again, I don't know if it's the model or the poor quality of the picture.

I'm working on building a new talos as part of that inner circle thing.
I wanted to paint it as I go because of its shape, so I didn't yet put all the parts together, but I was wondering:
I know plastic glue makes paint run, and super glue does not. Is there anything wrong with using super glue to attach vestigial parts like spikes and extra limbs?
Opinions?
>>51686523
your lord reminds me of the big evil dude from kingdom under fire
>>51686386
Aw man that sucks, yeah mine isn't that bad. I've still got one grav gun I'd already put on a model, and two grav pistols, so not all bad.
>>51686425
Was too late when I realised.
Is Stormhost Silver just a better version of Runefang Steel or are they different?

Rummaged through this huge lot and pulled out what I think are all the old crow miniatures, marine is in there for scale.
Not really sure what to do with them, but maybe civilian transports as one anon suggested.
Here are some old school DE I am working on. Not too sure on the colour scheme though, any advice?
I figure once I get vehicles, things might start to look bland or something
>>51687188
those ships remind me of pic related from the Starship troopers movie, maybe mixed with the dropship from Aliens.
>>51687188
the camo ones and the grey one would make cool sisters of Silence transports
the little guys would be cool for arbites
Valkyries obviously for the planes
And then here are some guardians I did aswell. Should I change the DE so that they can ally and blend in with the Eldar better?
>>51687244
I think it depends on what context they are working together under, a disparate mis-matched band can have a lot of personality.
>>51687222
Yeah, the turned down wings are super reminiscent of that.
>>51687223
I was thinking the camo craft looked very industrial, maybe carrying ore between refineries, but the SOS fit that bleak practical look as well I guess.

How do I paint classic retro style Ultramarines, preferably with the current GW range? These guys have the sickest paintjob ever.
Also, what size of base do the snapfit marines come with?
>>51686322
>grav
And nothing of value was lost.
>>51687329
That is one sweet paint job, mate. I'm afraid I dunno how to help you with that though, sorry.
I think the GW site says the snapfits are on 25mm, rather than the new 32mm.
I posted the first version yesterday, but I felt it wasn't '70s enough. So I made it a full-on cold-vs-fire 70's bullshit.
My X-Wing/Inquisition/Infinity phone case.
>>51687329
thats a pretty good paintjob, but its not retro enough
for maximum retro, you need to have hard blacklining, solid panels and sharp highlights, theres one anon with an excellent example of this that posts in the threads, you can try and find him
>>51684722
I went with alternating the shoulder plates you get in the Saurus Warrior kit. All of them having one of the two types on one side, and the second type on the other side. For the shields, I kept them, but cut them down so they looked less like shields and more like large hand weapons, which aren't uncommon in blood bowl.
>>51687372
What did he mean by this?
I bought a macro lens... now I can take ridiculous extreme close-ups of my miniatures!
This is a Wrastler's eye... possibly the finest detail I ever painted haha.

Boba
Bought some Liquid Greenstuff, Astrogranite texture, and Necron Compound today. Never used any of the types, so this will be an experiment.
I finally learned how to drybrush gooderer but now the paint stays on the tip and alters the hue of any new color I try to drybrush with. It doesn't seem to want to ever come off
The difference is now I'm putting paint on a much drier brush rather than attempting to dry it after I put paint on it
>>51687373
That's 100% airbrush?
>>51686936
The end results are very similar but stormhost is alot easier to use. Runefang is watery and requires a few thin coats you can just highlight with stormhost and it comes up bright and crisp immediately.

Hot off the presses.
Still needs a bit of touch up, but I'm going cross eyed.
Hey /wip/, I need some help. Thus far with painting up my Skitarii Vanguard I've been painting them approximately like pic related (I've crudely recoloured the robes to Russ Grey), but the more I've looked at it the less I like the robe colour, so I'm looking for alternatives. The original robes on the image were black, and I'm looking for a dark colour of some kind. I've been tempted both by that black-green colour FW have done on their Skitarii, and by a red-purple scheme I've seen. If it helps, the force is meant to be naval/fleet-based.I also need to find a way to safely get them off their bases to do the basing, because I'm an idiot.
Made a custom Troupe Master. Stormcast heads go surprisingly well with Harlequin masks.
>>51691264
>>51691122
>I also need to find a way to safely get them off their bases to do the basing, because I'm an idiot.
depends on what glue you used and if they are just glued to a bare base, if you used superglue you could just use your hobby knife for leverage and pry em off, just be careful when you do it. Alternatively shove them in the freezer first, it should weaken the bonds. On the other hand if you used plastic cement you¨'ll have to man-handle them a bit and pry them off the base using force.
As for the colours maybe some turquoise like the alpha legion or something.
>>51685474

Crystal Blue is very close to Caledor Sky, falls somewhere between Caledor Sky and Hoeth Blue. Hence the drybrushing of Hoeth Blue appears subtle.
If you dont want to drybrush, use Hoeth Blue anyway but only on large flat areas.
I'd suggest White primer if you want to prime a separate colour first, but I just primed mine Crystal Blue straight out of a can.
Apologies if this is a wall of text and/or makes no sense.

Hi Autismo.

I am really enjoying terrain you don't need to be neat cause you just tidy shit up afterward.
I'm going to mix up some darker pigments and splodge it on at the connection points.
Then going to use mud / dirt pigments to make the dirt...dirty I guess.
Once that is done I'l use flock and static grass (seeing as my last photo caused an autism outrage because I didn't point out the difference)
Then I'll finish with a tidy up of skulls and roses etc.

>>51698021
Well give it a go, airbrushes are always fun anyway but if you like it maybe grab a gravity feed as it will completely change the way you paint. Plus low psi let's you get your brush really close without flooding your model with paint.
Did your friend use the brush for long? If so most brushes have refurbish kits which are super cheap that replace all the seals in the brush and are really easy to install, which make it feel brand new. Maybe take a look if you have problems.

>>51698393
>>51698445
And finally I'm starting to clean up the back of the mini, where the belly begins. I never liked the fact that the frontal armour plate seems to simply suddenly become flesh so I'm going to make it as if the wings have burst out of the armour. I'll blend the belly into the back flesh and add some fat around the bum, and probably turn one of the legs into something resembling fluid-buildup.
>>51698527
forgot image
>>51698445
Looking pretty good senpai but I don't really care for the horns. I feel they need to be longer or shorter. Are you going to weather the wings?
>>51698588
Gonna file the right horn down to a nub and cover it and some of the head with tufts of hair that looks a bit like alopecia or radiation-sickness type hair loss. As for the wings, I'm not sure. I could paint them weathered but I'm not sure how to actually weather them. The plastic is pretty thick so I reckon it'd be difficult to make it look good with the limited skills I possess.
>>51698442
As far as I know he got it a few years ago used it once or twice for no Kore than an hour and never touched it again, so as fat as I'm concerned it's brand new.
I do plan on upgrading to a solid kit when I get a feel for the brush, but I like the idea of only having to get a compressor and some cleaner now instead of getting the brush

Continued work on my Neophytes and have finished painting four more. Don't worry, I'm gonna drill the barrels and do the basing.
Incidentally, Imperial Guardsman arms are the worst things ever. Why the fuck didn't they make them all the kind without the hand attached to the gun? The flame throwers were also really difficult.
Can anybody recommend good 3rd party bits I can use as extra CCWs on marines? The old scout daggers are fuck huge and the normal 40k marine knives are okay, but don't have scabbards. Betrayal at Calth sprues have nice knives but aren't easy to find on eBay.
Pic related but expensive.
>>51698916

Well I got a whole sprue for a few marines.
I should cast it.

>clean brush in water
>dip in paint
>bring to point like Dunc
>drag the tip on model
>no fucking paint comes off
>push a little harder
>still no paint
>push harder still
>ugly ass thick line
Every fucking time. Why does it feel like tip of my brush is drying out whenever I need to fine line work? It's not just that brush either. I have several fine tipped brushes, but they're kinda cheap. That's why I got the artisan brush (it was also 30% off), and while the brush itself is great, I still have the same problem.
>>51699201
nothing to do with brushes, heat/humidity in the air causes that. only options are to paint in cooler weather or use paint retardants so it takes longer for the paint to dry
>>51699201
Fine points have too high surface area so they dry quick. You need to work quickly, wash/refill every 1 or 2 strokes.
all three images of the in progress nobsquad were taken in the same lighting, but my potato phone decided two of them needed an instagram filter, not to mention the strange horizontal banding going on. I think I might need a new phone.

mainly free hand detailing.
stuff like micro scratches on armor etc.
size 0 works for mos things yeah, but when you're doing line work (that is on a flat surface and not an edge) a stroke from a size 0 brush will be fatter than a stroke from the artificer brush. I've only just started getting into this kind of style of painting and i've been pushing myself to improve. average painter wouldn't need an artificer brush though, imo. unless they had a big free-hand project on some special mini they wanted to do.
It's kind of a really specific brush and I will say that most of the time i prefer using size 0 brushes, but sometimes an artificer sized brush is necessary.
>>51698848

>i think you mean too small a surface area?
No, but I wasn't clear: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surface-area-to-volume_ratio
Those of you who drybrush threepwood, do you basecoat everything and then attempt to drybrush?
It's difficult for me to get the effect I want when pieces have different colors on the same plane
>>51699772
I use my size 0 for micro scratches no problem as generally it's not a huge problem if there is a minor changes in line thickness anyway, but I guess for free handing superfine lines a smaller brush might have more consistent results for something super super small, maybe something like pic related? That said the smaller working time would drive me absolutely insane freehanding. I can get liner than thread thin lines with a size 0 but I don't know if I could do something like pic related without a little inconsistency.
In any case, I don't think the dude I was replying to needs a small brush.
Im trying to do a Dark Eldar force in the scheme of pic related - jetbikes, raiders, etc. any ideas on how to do stars and the like on armor panels without resorting to freehand attempts?
>>51700005
yeah I agree with you.
it's more so, if you're trying to imitate scratches, you can get thinner/finer lines more consistently and faster with a smaller brush, though at the same time it's also more frustrating and time consuming, the smaller the brush you use. Generally if the brush tip is there, it doesn't matter too much how small/big the brush is as long as it's not fuck huge.
>>51700248
Probably can get some decals from historicals easy enough.

>>51699961
I'm assuming your talking about drybrushing wood. I usually basecoat Yea, my personal go tos are burnt umber from Vallejo or dryad bark from gw. Although more often I mix basecoats. I typically go for a heavy drybrush with the main highlight then build up lighter highlight and areas kg contrast with other colors.
Something I find very useful if I feel it is too stark is too mix the luscious color with the lighter color, creating smooth transitions

I'm getting back into wargaming with a generic fantasy army of Dwarves, courtesy of em4 and a handful of old metal miniatures I've had kicking around for years.
One thing I've never been able to work out is how to base a miniature and THEN do the base. As I'm working with large bases this time around, I'm going to have to learn how to do this.
So how do people do their large bases without fucking up the miniatures on them? Any tips?
>>51699577
>>51701183
Metal or plastic miniatures? For my plastic ones, I do the base and the mini separate.
Then all I need to do is attach a small length of paper clip to a part that will be in contact with the base, drill a hole in the base, push through, bend paper clip to hold in place and super glue paper clip to underneath the base.
This stops me getting any basing material on the mini, makes it easier to paint too.
Metal minis will just need a longer length of paper clip to hold in place.
>>51700474
All my mini's are in storage and i can't even though i want to. Do it for me anon.
>>51683064
Thread's almost gone so I'll probably repost, but this guy is coming along nicely. Still have a lot of work to do. Lots of little touch ups, definitely need to smooth out his skin wash a bit, highlights, etc.
Not super happy with the color of the loincloth but I'm sticking with it, this was kind of a "for fun" model I'm using for a Silver Tower game.
tl;dr I have 2 questions:
1. Can I do anything at this stage to smooth out those gaps that I obviously missed in his head? You can see seams around it where I glued the plasticard together. Thought I got it all, but primer makes fools of us all in that regard.
2. How can I make the bones on his spine stand out a little more? They were pure white before I washed them and it was probably a mistake washing them the same color with the same ratio as the skin which was also pretty pale to begin with. Anything I can do at this point about that?
To be honest this is my first painted mini in about 3 years and I've painted about a total of 5 before this. I'm aware of most of my mistakes but I'd love to hear what you guys think.
