Any airbrush recommendations? How are Badger products?

Badger's well-liked. Just make sure you're buying the right thing, I messed up my order and had to get a rabies shot after all the bites and scratches from taking mine out of the box.

Sorry if this questions makes no sense, had a surgery like 2 hours ago and still recovering from the anesthetic.

I can't find a picture right now but my guardsmen have like, grey-blue fatigues and tan flak armor. I wanna run some Skitarii alongside them as like, a Forgeworld that they are connected to. Could the guard scheme work on the Skitarii? Grey-blue robes with the tannish insides (steel legion drab -> agrax -> tallarn sand is the coloring for that right now) or would a different set up be better?
>>
>watch Duncan paint Sector Imperialus board
>get inspired to finally paint the one at my LGS even though its literally just me who plays

If I used the store's paint, The Dunc said it would take 3 pots for the more used colors across all 6 sections. Is that right? I wasn't planning on using them, but we could probably swing that.

My only other option would be like Walmart or something, which is another reason why I've been putting it off for so long.

So I'm looking at getting into plastic crack as another way to burn these fat stacks of cash I've got lying around, and because my friend is so proud of her Eldar army I figured it was time I get some Tau to knock her down a peg.
I have no experience with minis or models outside of old Revelle snap-togethers, where should I start? What do I need? I know GW has "essentials"/"starter kits" and such but GW is havin a giggle if they think I'm paying their outrageous prices for the rest of their products. I've got some Tau on the way courtesy of eBay but I figure, now I need something to paint them with.
Is the Citadel Essentials Kit a good buy for a first-time painter? Or what else should I be looking at?

so I have a pot of dettol I use to strip my minis ,about a litre in volume, and i havent changed it in months. it's now a gluggy, brown, slimy cauldron of filth that still, however, strips paint.

I put a leman russ in it last week and taking it out to scrub it, I found it fell apart at every glue join on the model. it is now an unassembled kit.
the plastic is perfectly fine, and i've never had dettol dissasemble any of my minis before despite being the same glue and same plastics.

I think this filthy pot has been sitting so long it's become a nurgles brew so potent it can kill tanks.

so your argument was that CSM isn't fluffy enough and therefore he should use the Space Wolf dex instead.
Am I having an aneurysm or does that make no sense at all?

Either way it's completely besides the point of this thread. It's about the models, not the rules.
>>
>>51673500
Because Night Lords still fall under the banner of Chaos Space Marines and it's much less of a leap to use those rules than loyalist ones. It's also just a single character model, hardly worth switching base factions over to cater to someone upset about a guy riding a wolf. It's kinda silly to suggest that someone not utilizing the Traitor Legions supplement should skip the core CSM dex and seek out other marine ones, despite how mediocre it can be.

If you're not painting for it I say go for the GW. GW pricing is normally balanced by the fact that they're noob friendly, except here you don't even pay for them, so jump on the occasion, instead of potentially fucking up by using Walmart paint.

That, and you'll be cool in the store owner's eyes, which is never a bad thing.

>>51672586
Well it's not that bad. As other said, red between the legs could have used another coat, blue on the right shoulder pad is a bit faint, and the head doesn't fit the rest, but other than that it's pretty solid.

>>51673528
That's some pretty solid work right there. There's really not much that deserve critics, maybe the base that is a wee bit underwhelming and plain, especially for such a big model. On the same note, a black rim, or at least a cleaner one of the same color you already applied would benefit the model.

Maybe the blade could have been the focus point of the model, had you made it like a blazing sword, as of now the model is very dark, it has no bright point of focus so you kinda lose yourself in it. However the sword is well done, and I'll always support something well done over something botched. Better to use simole technique and control them well than to try new stuff when you can't even co trol the basics.

Good job anon.

>great models, RUINED by mold lines

I know you probably think it doesnt matter, seeing as how they are clearly under papa Nurgle's thrall, but there IS a way to make gribbly AND clean, and you've done it, only to have the end result be muddled by that massive plastic seamline.

Paint wise these look fantastic. They need some rehiglights on the armor, which i would say keep cream/white, The suit webbing between the plates and the metal parts of the backpack and bolters need something different. Maybe metal covered with typhus corrosion and then rehighlighted? Be real careful not to screw up that white. As for the nurgle bits, i think some Nurgles Rot and Blood for the Blood God Technical paints are in your future. If you really play jazz with both of them and dont overdo it, should will look fantastic.

They look like a petri dish Revolted, and that's perfect.

Stop using shitty glues like gorilla glue. Pick up Loctite and it will dry enough for you to be able to take your hands away after a few seconds.
>>
>>51674353
these look quite nice. remind me of my old plague marine conversions. but the mold lines on the bolters and weapons kinda ruin the charm.
If I were you, I'd scrape them off (at least the one's that are wisible from the top) and paint over them again.

but other than that they look pretty cool

While I can see what you're going for, I'm going to be up front about several things and suggest what you can do to remedy them:

1) Your colors are really muddied right now. That is to say, they're all of similar value/tone and it is not a good thing. I think you can leave the purple as is, but you need to go for a brighter, solid green to pop out against the purple. The same for your gold.

2) Ditch the blue. You already have two cool colors in the form of the purple and green. You want detail/objects like the gems and robes to contrast those colors. You could also try black for the robes with green insignias.

Failing that, you can always just shamelessly copy Eva 01 here >>51674695 beat for beat, since it's one of the few designs in the history of the universe to tackle the green/purple color scheme and not look like a living nightmare.

Tried clean up, tried in lining some stuff. Personally I'm okay with it, I think on my next raider I'll try some glaze transitions on the panels or something to make it less flat.

I'm cleaning towards ynnari but the cheese of the book is putting me off so I'm not sure if I should but ynnari runes on them. I really like the concept of eldar all allying together and it's a nice excuse to paint some vypers or eldar guardians the same as this raiders scheme.

I'd use a torso shoulderpads and arms from the Chaos Knights, with legs from one of the plastic chaos characters. Maybe get a cheap one from the aos starter box from ebay.
There isn't a head that would fit the concept 1:1 but a lot of chaos warrior heads from various sources would look close enough if you chop off the horns.

Well first time I struggled and attached it directly after stamping it, and it was a pain in the ass to get it to stick and also having to deal with excess green stuff. I did not follow St. Duncus method and went with blue primer and hand-paiting gold trims, as for me it was easier to do, since all gold parts are super-easy to pick up with brush instead of trying to smear paint into recesess.
Blue-yellow stripes was also easy (all but one headresses with no lines spearating each colour - on them I had to be extra-carefull when applying).

Not regular-marine easy, but easy for basic troop.

You don't see them for sale, because nobody is going to part out a fucking Exorcist or Immolator. That's going to make you lose money, not net you a profit. The only people buying those tanks are people who are building the model, and those people generally don't sell leftover bits on eBay.

How assembled should my models be before I start painting? Just legs on torso?

Purple/red-toned shades just looks very nice with that sort of green. Not saying he should tone all of it that way, just add some slight tones in the shadows for the contrast!
>>
>>51678411
Looks great so far, though I'm not very fond of that sword from a sculpting perspective. The "layer" there is a bit too obvious, and would've looked better if smoothed out more (though could look nice if painted as a thick layer of dirty rust)

>I can't find any of these helmeted heads anywhere on the internet.
I bought the Immolator kit with the sole intent to recast that head. If many players are like me, then I don't think too many of them would be willing to sent out their master.

A recast isn't entirely out of the question, but my recasts have all been rather iffy.

Depends on the miniature. They can be completely assembled if there's no obscuring parts. For example, a marine with onehanded weapons can easily be painted fully assembled, while one with a bolter will be better to paint in parts (either without the bolter in place, or completely armless).
>>
>>51678430
>I'm interested in ideas for the summoned Daemon models themselves
you could elaborate on that theme.
basically cut a demon in half and sculpt some flames onto the areas where he is materializing.
Flames or smoke or whatever.

The only other thing I can think of would be to recast them in transparent resin and only paint one half of the model or something.
I could see plaguebearers rising from puddles of slime from the bases, like the living dead, but for the others my imagination only really comes up with thick whirling smokeplumes, fire or a lightning bolt after which the damn things are just there.

It's fucking weird how well aquarium decorations fit in as 28mm wargame terrain. At the most they need a bit of painting to help fit in with the aesthetic of your table and the houses may or may not fit but the grand majority of aquarium set pieces work well as terrain for a wargame. Like these pipes - literally all you need to do is paint the green algae parts to look like rust and bam, done.
>>
>>51678516
>Riddle of Steel/Riders of Doom
>>
>>51678449

That's what I do. Sometimes I don't even do that, because I want to pose the model a certain way. I think the only thing I actually glue before painting is weapon to right arm.

I used to glue more but then I realized it was pointless since more parts were unglued than glued, and painting the parts individually is really fast and makes me feel like I'm getting shit done.

Just be very careful about the glue points if you are gluing parts individually. You may need to do touch ups if you let glue leak out or if the glue spot is in a very visible spot. Sometimes you will have to glue before painting because you need to fill in the gap with putty before painting. But for things like marines, yeah, no point in gluing anything other than weapon and arm. All the joints are hidden and the armor is simple and doesn't require complete assembly to do painting shading and blending.

Actually, that sounds pretty nice. I never really thought about adding purple shade to this kind of green, so I'm definitely going to try it on some of my other miniatures (I'm pretty set on my DG colour scheme, since I like my marines more brownish/yellowish, so there's no room for any further shading).
Thanks for the suggestions.

It's not preventable. The best thing you can do is coil it at the top of your glue drop like a turd. When I get too lazy to put up with that shit, I just buy new glue.

Most people don't know that glue has an expiration date, and once you open the seal on the container, it eventually will go bad. The string caused by the liquid glue becoming less liquidy is just one sign of it slowly expiring.

>How was my attitude shitty.

You're full of excuses, you reject or ignore good critique ( >>51675837
), and the time you're done with a model is exactly when you need them critiqued, because if you say it's done then you can learn from it, then move on.
You need to take a break from the model and say 'What did I do well? What doesn't work well? What do I improve next time?'
You need to ask others what they think and then actually reflect on that.

>Also, that picture was taken with a shitty phone camera. The wraiths look way better in actual life than in the photos taken with my crappy phone.

So you expect us to be able to match your army based off the pictures, but they're not good enough to judge the wraiths? Weird.

The purple-pink transition can work, but it will not carry the models on its own. The green transition needs work on the execution, but doesn't look awful.

Your dudes do need highlighting. They desperately need some value contrast (shown here by desaturating) everywhere except the guns, the effect on which could be fine but you do need to decide if it's energy or a shift in colour. Without hue, we can see that your tabards look flat and the only interest on the bulk of the model is coming from the lamp shining off the paint of the dude in front. The guy to his left, not in the full glare of the light, looks very flat indeed.

Contrast is what makes models stand out, makes them look good, what fools the eyes into seeing light playing across full-sized figures where there is only a figurine.

And if you're going to settle for 'good enough', defend it on the real reasons instead of claiming it looks better.

Super Sculpey.
My standard procedure is basically an armature of steel wire, with a thin layer of Green Stuff on it as the SS isn't very "sticky", then bulk up with some foil and/or shitty "standard sculpey", then the base layer (5mm thick or so) of Super sculpey, then final details with Greenstuff/brownstuff and other epoxies.
In "warhammer scale" i just skip the bulking stage, as it doesn't need very large amounts of SS.

Chromed metal always works the same way: the parts that more or less point down reflect the ground, while the ones that point up reflect the sky.

Got my interest for sculpting when I was like 16 or so (25 now) and bought my first pack of Green Stuff for my old warhammer 40k stuff. Since then I've lost my WH-interest and just recently regained it. Been sculpting on and off since then as a hobby though. My problem is that I almost never finish anything, when it gets close to finished I just start my next project it seems like. Also I have very little time for hobbies nowadays due to working a lot. Here's my current "larger scale" WIP sculpt. Sorry for shitty pic.
>>
>>51679409
Oh and don't know about tutorials, I've just improvised to learn. Just get some good tools and start playing around! Sculpey is good for this due to not hardening until you put it in the oven. Don't get the shitty cheap "standard" sculpey though. Get Super sculpey, one pack of the normal beige one, and one pack of the grey "firm" one, then mix those depending on how soft/hard you want what you're currently working on. Firm is better for sharp edges, the other is better for "fleshy" stuff. My standard mix is 50/50, then adding of either one depending on what particular surface I'm currently on.

Yeah, this. However, bluing metal can result in very differing results, some stuff is quite matte, while some is very shiny. If you're going for the shiny look, just paint black, blend up to slightly brighter tones on some edges, then gloss varnish for an easy okay result. Well with some small amount of some metal paint in the black as well.
Here's a tool holder I made at work a few years back that has a much matter finish, with and without light shining on it. No expert on this though, haven't done a lot of bluing. Don't even know if that's the proper term.
And yeah, it's quite fucking dusty.

>Sorry if I'm being a dunce, but this isn't chromed metal?
Not the guy you were talking to but the principle is the same.
Chrome is just a surface with a near mirror finish. All smooth surfaces reflect light though.
The rough surfaces diffuse light more as they reflect it, which is why you don't get sharp reflections. I.e. the smoother a surface the sharper the reflections.
If you want to paint something to look smooth paint sharp reflections.

This image should give you a good idea about the whole thing.

Well it's in swedish, sorry. Also in a "private" group. Also the grammar is quite painful.
But the TL;DR is that he tried adding in "stainless" steel balls, they ended up rusting anyway and causing the paint to "rot" after 1-2 years, but he saved some of it with distilled water. Then he put it in those dripper bottles and added plastic airsoft balls instead and it seemed to work out for now.

Because it is. Black primer isn't really very good for anything. Personally I think grey is the best, easy to do both bright and dark colours even with thin coats.

Now, what do with like 60 fucking marines? Bought Calth two weeks ago to get a good base for my Word Bearers army, then ended up buying Prospero too last week on impulse after talking about the marine models in it with a guy at work, and he offered to buy off the sisters and custodes from it. Are marine hordes even viable?

>>
>>51681582
>Are marine hordes even viable?
They're nonstandard, but sure. Provided you're in a more casual meta and make sure to get some armour support, at least.

Some armies struggle with killing 60~ marines over the course of a full game.

>>
>>51681642
>>51681638
Yeah, bought them for modelling purposes, but gonna have a hard time getting them all together if I don't end up using most! Especially since I'm more of a sculptor than a painter, and like to sculpt on a load of detail on my stuff and make cool bases (so really love these new bigger ones for marines!). You can bet your ass I'm gonna feel forced to reposition the legs and fix the strange anatomy of every single one!
Figured I'd at least have a really big squad modelled with shields and shit, to count as MoN, and put an apostle or lord in. Maybe use the Prospero ones for havocs.
>>
>>51681718
I find the Mk3 legs are pretty good, pose-wise. Not much combat squatting going on. Those Mk4s though... well, good luck.
>>
>>51681740
Yeah, quite like the legs, arms and shoulderpads from the mk3s, and strongly prefer the torsos and helmets from the mk4. I'll try out how they look together, however that'd leave me with a load of marines using only the parts I like the least from the kits.
>>
>>51681840
Oh and when it comes to the backpacks I at least like both, in different ways. so that's something I guess.

just finished my eldrad, it was kind of a bitch to assemble and i didn't realize the staff had to go inbetween the gap in the cape, oh well... happy otherwise. Teal is for my craftworld, black for Ulthwe and cream to kind of elevate him above my other farseers who are in red and teal.

The flat surfaces here are pretty eh. When using styrofoam I pretty much always mix up sand, PVA and water and slather that shit over it. Depending on how you apply it, gives a stucco-y effect or a dirt piled up in the edges/corners effect.

>>51671977

I swear, every conversion uses at least one part from those sprues. It'd make me mad but the sprues are pretty good, too bad they're shit for an actual Scion force.

Nice work though. I plan to make my crusaders out of the top dudes here, with swords and shields from the bottom dudes.

I see your points, and I will probably change the tabards to another hue and work on them a bit at some point, but overall, I am done with the wraiths. I also dislike heavy highlighting, because it makes models look cartoony as fuck.
Besides, again, I am working on the wraithknight, not the wraithguards.
>>
>>51677085
One half of the model should be bright fucking red, and the other half bright fucking green, perfectly split down the center. Any small details like the eyes and spirit stones should be done pure black.

No, all the special weapons are set in one specific pose making it a shit sprue for larger populations of Scions, and all the hands holding the undersides of the guns are molded onto the guns making them shit for weapon swaps. They could have easily fixed it by doing boxes of ten with two different variations of each special weapon, and yeah having the hands on the arms.
