Kindly no End Times or Age of Sigmar. If that is your cup of tea, please go elsewhere, especially if you're just going to shill or troll. For all intents and purposes, it's not the same universe.

>dwarf is willing to quietly do five years for an assault on elves and otherwise work within the human legal system
>logic is Dwarvish, but otherwise sound - considers his attack on elves fair, but recognizes that from a human view he had committed a crime

Why are dwarves so bad again? They hold to their own code above all else, but they aren't ignoring others and their ways of doing things.

Elves would probably come in without a word, do whatever, and leave without any word of explanation or any attempt to atone for something humans might consider a crime.

Pretty much this. AoS is the opposite of everything I liked about Warhammer Fantasy. Warhammer Fantasy is a setting inspired by history and mythology, where the average person struggles to survive in a world populated with legendary creatures and infused with corrupting magical energy. AoS is a multiverse comprised of themed battle zones where superhero types engage in flashy combat.

Worshipers of Nurgle often are those who have ALREADY been struck by plague, abandoned, and accursed. They turn to him as their last resort, desperate and alone, and find acceptance in him. He so fills them with love that they must share it.

Others prostrate themselves before the Fly Lord to cast their foes down with disease. And if that comes at a cost, so be it. That is the way of gods.

Some worship Nurgle, giving him fresh victims to keep disease away from their own people. This profane safety does not tend to last long.

Dwarfs believe in collective ethnic responsibility.

Just how much varies by dwarf and by hold.

Smarter dwarfs like Thorgrim find ways to both satisfy grudges and not infuriate everyone.

Interestingly, the Ungol people of Kislev has a somewhat similar practice: ALL the kin of a criminal are responsible for their actions.

In other words: you know jackshit on the lore. Not going to say it's good, or that you must like it: but AoS IS inspired in mythology. NORSE mythology, with a bit of Greek One thrown into the mix and a lot of shit stolen from Moorcock.

Plus at worst stormcasts are on the same level with Chaos Warriors, and there's regular hummies fighting there.

But hey, you're free to hate it.
>>
>>51664922

>>
>>51664918

>>
>>51664996
AoS dropped the history and focused more solely on the mythology.
>>
>>51665123
Which is fine and dandy, and certainly not "Marvel Avengers"

Not everyone's cup of tea but I think we can speak of other subjects rather than grumbling about something that isn't whfb and therefore not important to this thread.
>>
>>51664996
No, I already knew all that about AoS. Reread my post.

>Warhammer Fantasy is a setting inspired by history and mythology
>history and mythology

It's the mixture of historical and mythological elements that makes Warhammer Fantasy appealing to me.
>>
>>51665026
Yeah, they're tolerant of Elves and Dwarfs. There's even Elven districts in some cities. They're still held in suspicion, though. Especially Elves.
>>
>>51664935
You can just use a movement tray to represent the unit size and basically use the models as wound counters
>>
>>51665211
Your post says nothing on the "it's inspired on mythology" part

>>AoS is a multiverse comprised of themed battle zones where superhero types engage in flashy combat

Is not saying it's based on mythology. Now you may wanna re-read YOUR POST.

But in the real world, the New World wasn't full of hostile lizardmen, all sorts of poisonous plants and incredibly dangerous animals far beyond what the real world or the rest of the Warhammer world could muster, a coast of vampire-ruled undead sailors, and occasional raiders from the Dark Elves looking for easy pickings from a tired ship's crew.
>>
>>51665739
Real world Europe also didn't have daemon allied Vikings attacking it, hordes of orcs, a province of undead, monsters, ogres, Wood Elves and ratmen living right underneath them.
>>
>>51665739
It didn't but it had rumours of those sort of things and a churn rate of thousands.

People still risked everything, and died in massive numbers to get that free free gold. Guarded only by the harshest conditions known to European man,

Seven deadly sins initially. More gods likely to come, the seven are just the start. Each has a unique Greater Daemon. The existing four themes are being split and shared.

The idea has not been ruled out as an addition.

They want decentralized Chaos. Daemons invading for a lark because Greed and Envy want to steal the Emperor's golden toilet before Sloth can, instead of according to a timetable for the destruction of the world as written by the guy who's in charge of all the planning.

>>51666192

Yes that's the fucking problem. Why the fuck do an edition in reaction to AoS if you're gonna do the exact fucking same: use warhammer lore as base for your shit ideas? We and the other anon mentioned the 4 horsemen as a lazy but effective way to retain the big 4 (and only the big 4) not as an "addition".

It's probably the best videogame based on a warhammer license ever made.

what you have to find out is if you enjoy the total war formula of gameplay and if so whether you do to the point where you want to repeat similar experiences with the DLC factions or be okay with just playing against them with your favorite faction (which I assume is greenskins).

I'm a little uncomfortable with this. I don't like the T9A team have clearly taken AoS as an opportunity to create their own not-Warhammer Fantasy setting. The "legal issues" explanation only goes so far.

On the other hand, given that Chaos gods are generated and strengthened by the dreams and nightmares of mortals, it does make sense that there would be more than four major Chaos deities.

I would have preferred if they had taken minor Chaos gods (Malal, Hashut, Necoho, Zuvassin) and given them bigger roles, though.

The real question is, what the fuck are they going to do with the Bretonnian fleet.

In Man O' War shit is all fucked up, they have ships that are more advanced than the Empire and use about as many cannons on them despite their lore.

It's going to need a total overhaul.

I agree that GW is stupid but I like the setting for its sandboxyness. I know the old world was a big ol sandbox but this is like an even bigger sandbox.

While Warhammer was more Witcher-ish fantasy, AoS is more Clash of the Titans crazy epic fantasy. It's way more myth and high fantasy, which I mean I don't mind as long as everyone in there isn't a superhero god.

my one gripe with AoS is that they need to update the factions that aren't fucking Stormcasts. I want my damn ordinary human forces fighting monsters n shite. I'm just glad if people wanna play AoS here I don't have to fuckin' rebase everything.

>>51665302

Same m8. I am gonna strip mine I painted in middle school and I figure I am gonna strip them, prime them red, give them a quick base of white and then paint over that for a dark gritty Blanchey looking look.

Which is gonna be crazy, as I've just started getting back into painting after like a decade wew
>>
>>51669389
Bretonnia has had the best human navy for a while, even through sixth edition. The Skaven fucked up the navy hard a while back so the king bailed them out with the royal treasury. It isn't lorebreaking since they still use trebuchets, the way around it is 'only a peasant crews warmachines anyway'. Nobles serving on board would be officers accustomed to boarding actions while lowborn and the small middleclass men would be sailors, marines and petty officers.
>>
>>51669391
I know
>>
>>51669462

It just feels so weird though, I mean I can understand that Brets would have a more powerful navy than the Empire because they have more access to the West Ocean. But to see them using cannons just looks weird. There navy should be more medieval but supplemented with magic.

I imagine it's due to a royal decree.
>>Weapons of blackpowder may only be transported, bought, sold and used in the armament of cannon aboard a sea going vessel.
>>Said vessel must be approved by the office Royal Admiralty, the Dukes of L'Anguille, Brionne or Bordeleaux as well as the consent of the King.

Medieval warfare is good enough for the field, but when it comes to the high seas you need a different approach, which I'm sure they understood after the fleet got rekt.
>>
>>51669530

This is true, which is why I wish they'd fuck off with all the stormcast stuff and start actually fleshing it out because imho it has potential but as they are GW they are probs putting money before creativity.

ANYWAYS

>>51669525
Is there a reason that Bretonnia hasn't advanced? I've never actually looked into it.
>>
>>51669701
Bretonnia was founded nearly a thousand years after the Empire and has less contact with dwarfs as well. Some people may say 'Empire stronk' but they forget to mention that they had a huge headstart with such close contact with the dwarfs, sorta like Japan after its industrialization.

Even with that in mind, it still has advanced. Bretonnian craftsmen are some of the best around, even better than their Imperial counterparts, and not all knights wear Third Crusade era armour. It's basically 'wear what you can afford' so there's a mish mash of knights wearing mail and leather, transitional plates and even full plate.
>>
>>51669701
>Is there a reason that Bretonnia hasn't advanced?

I've always assumed it was the Lady of the Lake's doing. Considering her true nature, it's no surprise gunpowder isn't a thing.
>>
>>51669751

Dang. Never saw it like that, yeah.

That said, anyone know where to pick up Bret models? Regardless if I play with em or not, I just want me some models to paint. Esp men at arms.
>>
>>51670067
Probably Ebay until there's a Bretonnia made to order. There's also a line of not!Bretonnia models set for release sometime in the future.

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/tms-kingdom-of-equitaine-army-release#/

I wish I could get some Men at Arms again, since mine look like toads as I painted them when I was 16. Now I'm slightly better and I'd like another go at them but I don't know how to strip paint from plastic models without destroying them.
>>
>>51670089

Simple green my man. I did it for 20 space marine models that were covered in several layers. Left em in overnight, took em out, brushed em with an old toothbrush, put em back in for another night, took em out and brushed again. The longer you leave em in, the easier it is to brush off.

Faster if you weren't not a dumby like me at 16 and paint over a layer of paint.

A bottle of simple green in America is like $4. If you're not in America I'd just google alternatives. I've heard dettol is good. Also pinesol works pretty well (as long as you don't leave them in for more than an hour) but pinesol works really well for the metal models.

Good luck dude
>>
>>51670226
Thanks. I'll try it out on one of the uglier Man at Arms I converted out of a spare Bowman. I've had a real passion for painting as of late, it feels calming, and I've posted a few models here but the camera on my phone doesn't take very good pictures. Even with the meagre skill I'm at it's ten times better than what I did when I first started playing Bretonnia. No basing, no inks, no dry brushing. I cringe looking at them.

Do you leave it in the open air or will a plastic container suffice? My old roommate bought me some Bloodletters off of Ebay for Christmas and the guy that made them must have glued his fucking pubes to the base or something. I tried scratched them off with an exacto knife as best I could but I've cut my thumbs open too many times to try any harder on their feet/talons. I'd rather not have an open container of cleaning fluid standing around, even if it's not in a place where it shouldn't be bumped or tipped over.
>>
>>51670533

I just stuck as many as would fit into a plastic container with a lid. Just an average tupperware container would work.
>>
>>51670555
Trips can't lie.

Good to know. Almost all of my knights, save my Grail Knights and characters who just need a brush and some inking, could use a bath like that. What would you recommend, a day or two, brush, and then another day or two with brushing afterwards?
>>
>>51670591

How stupid were you when you first painted them?

I mean like when I painted my marines I got em off ebay already painted, and after a month I decided to give em my own paintjob (without stripping them), then a few months later I gave them another paint job. Then another after. They were thicc monstrosities and it took about a week to strip them almost completely damn.

Though, one night should be enough to strip most. If you think they might need more then just leave em in another night.

I've heard of people who stuck minis in simple green for months on end and the minis come out fine. After awhile iirc, the simple green will simply dissolve the paint if you leave it in long enough. I think.

But yeah, one night, brush (HARD) in the morning, try not to break the models but brush hard.
>>
>>51670470
My guess is it's going to be orges as the last old world dlc, then we're getting a tomb kings, delf and helf and skaven standalone, with lizards as dlc to that, then a chaos standalone in the wastes which will add demons, full kizlev, and each god will have faction with chaos dwarf dlc. Dogs of war dlc probobly in the second game
>>
>>51670634
Not that stupid, but not informed enough. Basically I wanted to have them table ready, and I painted with friends so we joked around half the time anyway. They have multiple coats, but the same amount of paint without any kind of lighter layers or shading. Basically how a newbie paints when first into the hobby.

Shouldn't be too hard to brush Men at Arms except for the two that I converted to wield halberds instead of spears and shields. Even so they've broken so many times that it doesn't matter, just a spot of glue and they're good. I GM'd WFRP with a new person and he was legitimately worried that he broke a model of mine, but I said not to worry and that all he needs is glue and time.

Tzeentch is ambition. Part of pride.

The direction T9A is going is divorcing specific Daemons from specific gods. Instead of all Khorne being uniform Bloodletters, never magic, there are Bloodletter-types that are used as warriors by all gods. Some use others more.

For example T9A Envy is about lowering enemies to your level. That's Nurgle. T9A Sloth is about impending doom, but also prophesy and fate. That's Nurgle and Tzeentch. T9A Lust is about corrupting others, which is Slaanesh, but Lust draws everyone into its army which is like Nurgle's Plaguebearers.
Remember how Slaanesh is describes as a moody god who goes from happy to hateful to scheming constantly? Imagine if Slaanesh had Plaguebearers and Daemonettes when happy, Bloodletters when angry, and Horrors when plotting because all his part of the Warp changes based on his mood instantly.

Basically you can take any Daemon, and it will reflect any T9A Chaos God based on how you use it. But on the tabletop the army is lead by a Greater Daemon specific to that god, and they use Marks to alter their stats slightly to reflect who they serve.
>>
>>51670749
The game is supposed to be a soft trillogy with stand alone super dlcs with as much content as the first game that can be played as separate or apart.

I think they recognize that naval warfare is going to be operating on different rules than land warfare, or maybe it's throwing up their hands at the fact that they can't really be glorious knights when they're on the sea and are bowing to necessity when it comes to protecting sea trade. Though I guess they could include ramming galleys for charges...trebuchets on a ship are kind of stupid, though - it won't work if your enemies are going to be boarding like Dark Elves or using cannons like the Empire.

Still, one subtle bit of lore that I like about Bretonnia is that some parts of it seem more 'modernized' than others, and it creates some tension, and hints that maybe in the future urges to modernize from the bottom up could lead to rebellion or strife.

I'm going to agree on this. Seriously, though, why do you need to make a setting? If you ask me, there may be even a bit of greed at the end of the road. Who says they might even start charging you to play their "unique" setting? They already got companies backing them, which IMO is a bit part of the problem.

When I was a kid playing Morrowind, I thought to myself, "I wish they'd make something like this for Warhammer."

I felt sure somebody would do it eventually.

That was fifteen years ago.

Yes, but I think you need to grapple more with the inherent and deep-trained instinct to exploit and be cruel in the skaven.

It wouldnt be impossible to render Warhammer in Morrowind. All the tools for building it is there. It would just be a monumental effort, that's all.

This is why it will never happen. I thought about doing something like this in OpenMW using WAR assets, but I just don't have the time or skill.

I don't know - Morrowind is pretty unique in terms of creatures and what's in it, and that won't all translate well to Warhammer.

You live in a world where WHFB is hugely popular. You have to select a new faction from the lore to create an army for.

Which do you pick?

I'd pick Tilea: renaissance Italians armed with bizarre war machines inspired by Leonardo da Vinci.
>>

Bretonnia. :^)

It needs some fucking lore that isn't propaganda from other army books.

Cathay.

Exotic, China isn't all that focused on yet in media but it feels like there's been new interest and such a faction would be well liked, the potential for a fairly well-rounded army with both magic and gunpowder and yet distinct from other Warhammer factions, a chance to have a presence in not!Asia outside of vague lore related to other factions, and you can still have them interact with Elves, Dark Elves, Orges, Chaos Warriors, Orcs and Goblins believably and the Empire, Bretonnia and Dwarves a little less believably. It would also provide a chance to add some more material for Nippon or Ind as sources of units or mercenaries.
>>

Estalia

-Caballero cavalry. Basically the Estalian answer to knights-errant. Young, dumb, full of cum nobleman who make up for their lack of experience in audacity and zeal.

-Estalian diestros. Loose units of gentleman fighters who get better as they do damage, since seeing their comrades do heroic things inspires their fellows to fight harder out of a need to not be outdone.

-Pike & crossbow squares, upgradeable to pike & shot squares.

-War bulls. Angry, frightened bulls tied to logs covered in pitch, which are then set aflame. Ideally, they charge directly into the enemy lines, wreaking havoc as they gore the enemy and thrash a burning log around.

-Myrmidian battle maidens. Hyper-disciplined spear-and-shield troops who don't break for anything. Use their famous polished mirror shields to make aiming at them less effective.

-Conquistadors, motley units of men who have been to the new world and survived, bringing back unusual weapons and tactics in the doing. Not so effective in conventional combat, but highly modifiable and 'quirky,' making them a potentially dangerous wild card.

Ah sorry then, thats that then.

Random question that may be interesting may be stupid, but with 40k all trying to be different and having squatted the old races, what do you think itd be like if the settings switched.

So 40k was grimdark medival fantasy and Warhammer fantasy is a scifi fantasy setting with space tomb kings and the like.

I don't really understand. The settings are reflections of each other.

Stolen from Moorcock.

GW had the rights to produce minis of Moorcock's IP, and when GW lost the rights they just pretended the models were generic Elves.

Same as how Beastmen came from unsold Broo minis and all four Greater Daemons are D&D monsters. GW came up with very little designs, and lost most of it when they realized freelance artists keep the rights to designs.
>>
>>51680858
did they make a in universe explanation for it?

As far as I know medieval naval battles, they basically treated ships as floating platforms for soldiers to fight from, and even occasionally formed 'walls' of ships. Ancient battles, at least in the Mediterranean, focused around ramming and boarding.

As for Empire Total War, I was never good at the naval battles after a certain amount of ships were involved. It was impossible to keep track of, and I couldn't be static like in land battles.
>>
>>51680858
The Dark Elves are also very much a pastiche of the cruel and decadent Melbonéans.

>>51680916
He despised it, and his stuff is a reaction to it. The fact that it never attained the same recognition eternally hurt his butt, and the dude wrote the now-infamous 'Epic Pooh' on the subject, which is full of logical fallacies and dripping with professional jealousy and spite.

>>
>>51680077
>And don't get me started on how longwinded and over-wroughtly written it was!

Was it written with an in-universe point of view? Because they may have just been imitating pompous olde worlde speech.
>>
>>51680216
>What if i want to play dwarf?
Box up, force the defender to come to you with artillery, pelt their army on the way with Quarrelers (from behind your line) or Thunderers (they need direct line of sight), murder their lord with your superior Dwarf Lord, you have some of the most sturdy infantry so you can rely on them not breaking, flank with Great Weapon troops and charge into their flanks/back

Once you get comfortable, mix your force with other troops, practice makes perfection, no other way around it

also, these questions are better off into /vg/'s Total War general, it's one of the best generals and their advice will be much better
>>
>>51680916
Although Warhammer Fantasy contains Elves, Dwarfs and Orcs, they're presented in a way that's so at odds with Tolkien's approach that I don't think they can be described as Tolkienesque.
>>
>>51681211
It was.
Bretonnian bard accompanies a nobleman who goes to hunt Elves, they slaughter the army and T9A Orion keeps the bard as a pet like a songbird. The entire book is his accounts of encountering each option in the book during his captivity.

At the end he escapes and tells the local lord what happened and the he forces him to bring them to the Elves. It turns out that was the Elf plan all along, they ritually slaughter the lord and the army while the bard escapes to the coast. Its implied one of the other Elf types will capture him next.
>>
>>51680125

Even the out-of-universe bits were longwinded. The in universe doubly so. Honestly, there's a difference between immersion and grabbing someone's head and forcefully sunk it into the water. It's not making it better.

>>51681211

No, sucking the writers' pencil dicks.
>>
>>51681351
It's just my go-to word for settings with these standard fantasy races, even when they are done in a different way.

Its also at-odds with Moorcock. Moorcock Chaos was about a natural return to equilibrium then a distuption again. Warhammer Chaos is evil and wins because good is dumb.

>>
>>51681481
>Implying I bothered reading that garbage that ultimately led to the Old World's demise.
>>
>>51681536
Trust me: taking twelve lines in order to say: I'm going to write down a story I told a lot of times, isn't just flowery (and this is page one, don't get me started on the rest).

It is overwrought and un-expressive. Things that would be cool to go into detail are glossed over, while other, more boring and almost tangential are given inordinate screentime.
>>
>>51681546
It was better than 7e lore though. 7e was "Let's play this as safe as we possibly can, and sell some named models while we're at it by making 1/4 every book their biographies."

Advanced is a relative term in Warhammer.

Races that rely less on gunpowder tend to be more powerful magically.

The Empire take after the Dwarfs and are very suspicious of magic, preferring to put their trust in technology.
